Barn Quilts blend the art of quilting, agriculture in our country and the history of communities in the rural areas. It began in Adams County Ohio by Donna Sue Groves when she had a quilt block painted on a barn to honor her mother‘s love of quilting. The idea caught on in the countryside and now has moved across the nation. The Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail established in 2012 is Kansas’ second quilt trail. Sue Hageman is one of the committee members on the KSFHQT. You will learn the history of the American Barn Quilt Movement, the Kansas Quilt Trails, how they are made and some of the wonderful stories of the quilts and the barn quilts. April 21 “Sorting Through the Complex System of Medicare” Speaker: Eric Driggers, PharmD Eric Driggers, Hillsboro native, and owner of Greenhaw Pharmacy will be joining us to share and educate us in the different types of Medicare, including Part D, and will try to explain the role of each as it pertains to the area of pharmaceuticals. May 5 “A Cooking Demonstration” Presenter: Rob Scott Rob Scott, local chef and Director of Dining Services at Parkside Homes as well as owner of Scott Catering, will join us for a cooking demonstration, made a bit more challenging for him by the fact that the meeting space does not include a kitchen. Creative cooking, presentation, and good home-style food are the foundation of Rob’s experience and daily practices. Please join us for this delightful presentation centered around something we all love, food. We encourage everyone to bring a favorite finger food to share. Please join us for this special celebration and time of fellowship. Special note: Due to construction on campus, parking near the Wohlgemuth will not be available this year. However, we have made arrangements for Lifelong Learning attendees to park in the lot just south of the library. For those who would like, we will also be providing a golf cart shuttle service available from the library parking lot to the WMEC.

February 3“Ministry Entrepreneurship and Why It Is Important for the Church Today”Speaker: Rick Bartlett, Director of Theological Education at Tabor College Wichita

Rick Bartlett has worked with youth and young adults for over 30 years. He is 1992 Graduate of MB Biblical Seminary and a 2006 graduate of George Fox University where he earned a DMin in Leadership in the Emerging Culture. He has served as youth pastor in three congregations, as a summer camp director, college instructor, missionary, the Assistant to the National Director for Youth for Christ – Britain, Leadership Development Director - Youth for Christ Pacific Northwest Region, and seminary faculty member, Director of Ministry Quest, and Dean of Students – MB Biblical Seminary. He also served as Lead Pastor of Bethany Church in Northeast Fresno from 2008-2012. He co-authored, the book Consuming Youth published by Zondervan. Currently Rick serves as Director of Theological Education at Tabor College in Wichita.This session will focus on a new way of training pastors and other ministry leaders through a model that includes classes, meals together, community, prayer, and international experiences.

February 17“Save a Dog/Save a Warrior”Speaker: Janice Ronald: Co-owner and founder of Family Dog Training & Behavioral Center

Janice Ronald has worked with and trained dogs for 30 years. In the past six years, Janice has expanded her work to helping Veterans and others with disabilities, find and train service dogs.

Janice will explain the process of finding an appropriate dog to train as a service dog, typically to mitigate symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, and other psychological disorders. She will cover the specific ways a properly trained dog can assist the handler by alerting to symptoms, positional training to protect, and interruptive behaviors to intervene in the handlers unwanted behavior.

March 3”Stories from China”Speaker: Jeremy and Krista Matlock, Associate Pastoral couple from Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church

Jeremy and Krista Matlock were missionaries in both Russia and China. Last fall, they shared about their adventures in Russia and this semester they will be sharing some of the exciting things that impacted them while in China, as well as what drew them to go in the first place. You won’t want to miss these stories.

March 17“What Were Ya Thinkin’?: A Perspective on the National Anthem and the Inspiration for It”Speaker: Debs McIlhenny

Deborah B. McIlhenny, known as “Debs,” is the child of a career Air Force family and wife of a retired General. In 1998 , Debs received her law degree and now, nationwide, Debs litigates plaintiff’s civil, complex litigation in constitutional and consumer rights, antitrust and price fixing, pharmaceutical and medical device mass torts, and personal injury and other torts.

As a frustrated thespian, Debs is a “regular” singer/actor in the Wichita Bar Show musical revue associated with the Kansas Bar Association traveling convention. She speaks publicly on patriotic, inspirational, and constitutional issues; sings The National Anthem at various venues; and performs regularly with the all-volunteer Wichita Symphony Orchestra Chorus.

March 31“In our own backyard: The who, what, and where of area child abuse – and how we can help”Speaker: Lisa Donahue

This program will introduce Heart to Heart Child Advocacy Center, which serves Marion, Harvey, and McPherson counties, and will identify child abuse trends throughout the tri-county service area – including types of abuse, who typically offends, where it happens, and who is most vulnerable. Common signs of abuse will be discussed, and risk and protective factors will be highlighted.

Finally, we will discuss Heart to Heart educational programs and outreach efforts to raise awareness, and we will explore ways that community members can get involved to help make a difference.
