Tabor College - Your alma mater. My alma mater. What is it about our alma mater that strikes a chord deep in our being?

Recently, I attended a game at Allen Field House. For you non-Kansans, or those who are not basketball fans, that is where the University of Kansas plays bas-

ketball. About 30 minutes before the game began, I suddenly recognized the band was playing Tabor’s alma mater. Only the crowd was singing differ-ent words than I remem-ber. I sang along with my own words... Tabor tried and true. Inside there was a sense of pride and an emotional tug. They played my alma mater.

In mid-December I accepted the resignation of Jim Elliott as vice presi-dent of Advancement. He told me he accepted a position at his alma mater, Moody Bible Institute. What an honor to be invited to serve at one’s alma mater. I imme-diately understood the lure of the call. My mind went back to four years ago when my alma mater

called and invited me to come and serve. The oppor-tunity to give back, to serve at the place where forma-tion and transformation happened is a strong call.

When we hired Jim Paulus this past summer to serve as our vice president of Student Life, I asked him what was most significant in accepting our invitation. His reply, “The opportunity to come home and give

back to his alma mater.” There is a yearning to recon-nect or stay connected with our alma mater.

Often when I meet alumni on our campus they tell me how wonderful they feel as they walk on cam-pus. The inner gratitude, fulfillment, and meaning they are experiencing as they spend time on campus. They feel at home and connected to their alma mater.

When I meet our alumni in my travels, I hear about the experiences that shaped their lives and to this day continue to influence them in their vocation. I hear the love for their alma mater.

What is it about our alma mater that strikes a chord deep in our soul? I think I know what it is. During our time at Tabor, we were deeply touched, shaped, even transformed. Formation happened in the classroom, in our co-curricular activities and in the dorms. The experiences of that period in our lives were formative. We learned how to discover, think and communicate. We made friendships that have lasted for a lifetime. We made significant decisions that determined our life trajectory. Life took on mean-ing and purpose. All this happened at our alma mater.

Your alma mater continues to provide these same experiences for students today. Character develop-ment, Christian spiritual formation, vocational choices, life skills, habits of the mind, life-long friend-ships, all these and more are what make up the Tabor Experience and places deep in our hearts an apprecia-tion for our alma mater.

You’ll find in this edition of The Connection that the spirit of the Tabor Experience is as strong as ever. Students are still seeking and finding Christ in their midst. Tabor alumni gathered for Homecoming to rekindle old friendships and relish in school spirit. We are thankful and appreciative for each of the individu-als and businesses listed in the Honor Roll of Donors who have generously supported the school financially in the past fiscal year.

Thank you, Tabor. My alma mater, your alma mater... our alma mater.

From the President

Dr. Jules Glanzer

Following Mary Bostic’s diagnosis of breast cancer, the campus com-munity joined together to show support for the food-service director. Every-other Monday, prior to her treatment, the campus was flooded with hot pink “Team Mary” shirts provided by Student Senate.

There’s something unique about Tabor College this year. It is not viewing the new landscape proj-ects or no longer paying for laundry. It isn’t even the improvement of having cable in the dorms and houses.

It is something much more rewarding. “There’s a different spirit on campus,” said Wendell

Loewen, Tabor College associative professor of youth, church and culture. “Really good things are happening - things that aren’t happening (at other schools).”

God’s work on this campus is evident. Since

August, nearly 20 students have confessed their sins and are now walking with the Lord.

So what sets this year apart from previous years?“I don’t think we are doing anything

different,” said Loewen. “It’s just a God thing.”

Students and faculty have spent time praying for the campus.

At their retreat, faculty put in many hours asking God to work in the students’ lives and it is apparent God heard this.

Loewen described the student body using a penguin analogy. The male bird sits on an egg for months. Over this long stretch of time he feels like nothing is hap-pening. He knows that there is life in the egg but there is no evidence, until one day the egg hatches and new life is born.

The bird is compared to faculty and staff at Tabor. The college employees pray for God to be involved in the students’

lives. After a long period of waiting, they begin to see new life and evidence of God’s work.

“When this happens, we must celebrate it, hold it loosely and be grateful,” Loewen said.

Numerous student groups unite weekly, allowing

time to pray for the campus. One of these is Share, Prayer and Dare, which

meets every Wednesday at 9 p.m. in the Historic Church, for a time of worship, prayer and fellowship.

Josh Shaw, junior from Peyton, Colo., leads SP&D. “The most important thing to me is that the gos-

pel needs to be communicated,” Shaw said. “At SP&D we do this through worship.”

On a normal Wednesday, you will see a filled church, with hands lifted up and voices praising God.

“It is so moving to see other people excited about what I am so passionate for,” Shaw said.

People tend to reflect each other and their atti-tudes, he said. When students witness their peers talking about and going to SP&D, it creates curiosity, bringing more people to the church on Wednesday nights.

"The students," Shaw added, "begin to feel like they are a part of SP&D and begin to seek ownership of the ministry."

“I am excited for November because that is usu-ally an amazing transition point,” Shaw said. “People really start to grasp SP&D and understand what it is. I’m anxious to see what God has in store.”

Several students have come to Christ on these Wednesday nights. Kristina Middleton is one of them.

Middleton, a freshman from Hope, Kan., had

a life-changing experience during the first week of September.

“We were singing ‘Amazing Grace’ and I saw my life flash before my eyes,” Middleton said. “I saw the path I should be on. I knew what I needed to do.”

Middleton went outside with several of her peers to express her feelings. It was at that moment she accepted Christ.

“When I was singing ‘Amazing Grace,’ I didn’t know the words,” Middleton said. “They just came out of my mouth. It was God showing me that I needed Him.”

Middleton’s experience was not limited to that

“There’s a different spirit on campus,” said Wendell Loewen, Tabor College associative professor of youth, church and culture. “Really good things are happening - things that aren’t happening (at other schools).”

“The most important thing to me is that the gospel needs to be communicated,” Shaw said. “At SP&D we do this through worship.”

night while she was wrapped up in worship.“Everything has changed,” Middleton said, smil-

ing. “I have new friends, new everything.”This scene with Middleton isn’t uncommon. It

happens on many Wednesday nights, which is why others have already felt God’s call this year.

Other organizations that witness to students are Campus Prayer, Talks on Tuesdays, Campus Ministries Council, Women’s Mentoring, Bible studies, WUMP and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, to name a few.

Chapel credit is now given in other venues such as Bible study attendance, musicals and campus speakers.

Having this new guideline encourages students to try new ways to grow in their faith.

Mike Brouillette, the new campus pastor who began Oct.1, has enjoyed students asking questions

Wednesday evenings will find students filling the Historic Church, taking part in regular worship and supporting each other in their faith journey.

“When I was singing ‘Amazing Grace,’ I didn’t know the words,” Middleton said. “They just came out of my mouth. It was God showing me that I needed Him.”

about their faith. "Students are diving deeper into what they

believe," Brouillette said, "and they want someone to go on this journey with them."

“I love when students have questions or want to pursue God’s ministry,” Brouillette said, with a glint in his eye. “I love having the chance to pray for people, give them advice, and help in any way I can.”

Brouillette said he has been privileged to share the gospel with the sports teams this year by leading sev-

eral devotions; he really enjoys working with athletes.

“Not only have I been able to do devo-tions with them,” Brouillette said, “but some of the coaches and students have led the teams on their own as well.”

Tynan Honn, junior from Hutchinson, Kan., volunteered to lead her basketball peers in devotions twice this year during preseason.

Honn spoke about how the team is com-prised of sisters. "God has brought them together so they must be unified," she said.

“I think that we have definitely become closer,” Honn said. “We have trusted each other more, are there for one another and rely on each other.”

Senior baseball player Bret Lentz from Wichita, Kan., helps lead a Bible study for his teammates, which meets every Wednesday night.

Using the team’s mission statement centered around 1 Corinthians 10:31, they have focused on glo-rifying God through baseball and their lives.

“I have noticed small changes,” Lentz said. “Guys have been asking questions and we have had good attendance each night. I think it has formed bonds and made us stronger.”

The purpose of the Bible study is to provide the guys with a relaxed place to get to know God. We want them to feel comfortable here, Lentz said.

"Spiritual vitality is the most rewarding thing to see," Brouillette said, "which is evidence itself in the devotion students have for their peers and their pas-sion for God’s Word. The ministries going around Tabor College’s campus are very influential and impor-tant. It makes me happy to see that (we) are becoming a mission field.”

Mike Brouillete, campus pastor, shares a light moment with Michael Klassen in the Caf. With an office located in the Student Center, the comfortable setting and ease of access finds many students dropping in to visit and seek guidance with Brouillette on a regular basis.

Tabor College will welcome Dr. Steve Wilkens as a scholar in residence January 4-11 and January 18-26. During his time on campus he will conduct research and present a series of lectures to faculty and staff. The program is a direct outcome of the Tabor Experience, strategic framework and initiatives, and will focus on the Christ-centered learning model.

Dr. Frank Johnson, Vice President for Academic Affairs, was happy to make the announcement of Wilkens’ coming visit.

“We are blessed and privileged to have Dr. Wilkens, a notable expert on integrating faith and education, visit our campus as a true scholar in resi-dence,” Johnson said. “We anticipate great conversa-tions to be had, as we explore the intersections of faith, teaching and learning.”

Wilkens will present sessions tailored to the vari-ous campus communities, including the faculty and staff. He will share with the student body during Chapel.

Wilkens, who was honored as the 2010 Tabor College Alumni of Merit award winner, is a profes-sor of theology and ethics at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif. He received his Bachelors of Arts in

Humanities from Tabor College in 1977, a Master's in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, Calif., 1983, and a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary, 1988.

He is an accomplished author with more than 30 publications and presentations to his credit. In February 2011, his book "Everything You Know about Evangelicals is Wrong (Well, Almost Everything)", made the best-of list by Christianity Today.

“As it was purposeful and intentional that Dr. Wilkens was selected as our first scholar-in-residence to address the core issue as to what it means to be a Christ-centered institution, it is our desire that faculty and staff fully participate in this program,” Johnson said. “We can all learn and grow in our own personal faith and be better equipped to share that journey with the students that we are trusted with and in our wider campus community.”

The tradition of a Homecoming production was as vibrant as ever and was presented four times during the week. Based on Charles Dickens’ classic tale of the orphan boy who asked for more, Lionel Bart’s musical Oliver! was sold out for each performance.

The cast featured Eva Noble as Oliver, Maria Loewen as Nancy, and David Vogel as Fagin. Others taking center stage included Aaron Stepanek as Bill Sykes, Anna Glanzer as the Artful Dodger, and Ben Heyen as Mr. Bumble.

Hanna Vogel in the role of Bet, Clarissa Berglund as Widow Corney, Jessica Coldwell as Mrs. Sowerberry, Tim Roesch as Mr. Sowerberry, and Aaron Brooks played the part of Mr. Brownlow and other roles.

The cast was completed with Tabor stu-dents including: Andrea Acker, Sydney Coughlin, Cheyenne Derksen, Abigail Epp, Hannah Evans, Natalie Hartzell, Lauren Just, Tricia Kaethler, Cassie Kroeker, Alisa Lynn,

Oliver!

Scott Morrow, Silas Pederson, Michael Robinson, Jesse Todd, Kelyn Vix, and Matthew Wiebe.

In addition to Noble and Glanzer, the following community youth were featured as orphans and pick-pockets: Eva Franz, Paul Glanzer, Iris Klein, Dakota Klein, Charlie Major, Grace Major, Cora Maser, Josiah Melton, Chloe Pankratz and Brodie Rathbone.

The show, under the direction of Judy Harder, working with Dr. Brad Vogel as vocal coach and orchestra director was again a spectacular display of creativity and talent.

The Tabor College Chapel was once again transformed into a theatre, transporting ticket-holders to old London town for the Homecoming production of Oliver!

Many Tabor College students as well as children in the commu-nity were cast by director Judy Harder. Right: Anna Glanzer and Eva Noble performed admirably as The Artful Dodger and the orphan Oliver.

Recognizing alumni who have carried the Tabor message and mission into their chosen career fields and have made a difference in their professional lives, two individuals were honored at the 2011 Tabor College Homecoming Festival Dinner. President Jules Glanzer bestowed the Alumni Merit Award on Alan Peters, Fresno, Calif. Landon Fulmer was presented with the 2011 Alumni Medallion Award.

Alan Peters, a member of the Tabor College class of 1961, holds a Bachelor of Arts in History; Bachelor of Divinity from the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary, Fresno, and a Master of Social Work from California State University, Fresno.

Peters lives in Fresno, Calif. with his wife Jeanie. They have two grown, daughters, Stephanie Wait and Julie Brown and seven grandchildren.

His professional career included working for Fresno County Social Services, retiring as the director of the county program. He’s probably best known for his work with Mennonite Genealogy. He is the creator of the GRANDMA Project (“Genealogical Registry and Database of Mennonite Ancestry,”) which has now become the standard worldwide compilation of the combined work of virtually all Mennonite genealogists and family historians, now providing information on more than 1,200,000 persons with Mennonite ancestry.

Fulmer, a 2003 graduate who holds B.A. degrees in History and Philosophy from Tabor College now

serves as the State Policy Director for Governor Sam Brownback. During his time at Tabor, he participated in choir, soccer, a study abroad program at Oxford University, and served Student Senate as its Vice-President and President. He received various awards at Tabor, including the Presidential Scholarship, the Hiebert Merit Award, and the school’s first Fran Jabara Leadership Award.

In recognizing the value of a Tabor education, he noted in his response, “You don’t just learn a subject at Tabor College,” he said. “You learn how to live.”

Fulmer lives in Lawrence with his wife Lidiya and their two daughters, Anna, 2 and Victoria, 1.

“We are so blessed to be able to call these out-standing individuals Tabor alumni,” Jules Glanzer said in presenting the awards. “They are truly taking the Tabor College mission and making a difference in the world.”

Tabor College gratefully acknowledges the generos-ity of Gunther Henry Schmitt, a physician and radi-ologist from San Bernardino, Calif. In his $4.7 million estate gift to the MB Foundation, the earnings from approximately $1 million will benefit Tabor College. Schmitt who passed away August, 2, 2010, had no children of his own. He left his entire estate for the benefit of nine organizations and ministries, including Tabor College. They span his interests of education, mission and relief.

Schmitt’s desire was that his estate would benefit the Mennonite Brethren. The MB Foundation board of directors, together with the Tabor College board of directors, decided that Dr. Schmitt’s intent would best be honored by endowing the Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies, The Clarence Hiebert Excellence in Teaching Award and graduate theological training.

The endowed gifts, which remain in trust with the MB Foundation, will result in a stream of annual fund-ing, totaling approximately $50,000 for these areas.

Tabor College President Dr. Jules Glanzer expressed appreciation for the gifts. “Dr. Schmitt’s generos-ity and desire for Mennonite Brethren causes to be strengthened are being honored at Tabor. Rewarding the accomplishments of our faculty, preserving our history for future generations, and serving our con-stituents with theological education all strengthen the MB Church,” Glanzer said.

Schmitt was born May 21, 1931 in Kudus, Java, Indonesia, the son of Hermann Schmitt and Helene (Klaassen) Schmitt. He was the second child in a fam-ily of six children. His grandparents and parents were German missionaries to Indonesia, serving under a Dutch mission agency.

During the war in 1939, Schmitt’s father and grand-father were taken prisoner and lost their lives at sea. The Schmitt women and children were sent to China for safety. The family stayed there until 1947 when they moved to Reedley, Calif. Extended family members liv-ing in the area, as well as several Mennonite relief agen-cies in the region, provided shelter and financial sup-port for them during this particularly difficult period. It was at this time, as a young man, that Gunther Henry Schmitt learned the value of generosity.

Jon C. Wiebe, president of MB Foundation, asked the late Schmitt about his generosity, and he replied, “’No one taught me to be generous. I was a recipient of generosity,’” Wiebe said.

Schmitt attended Reedley College for two years before transferring to the University of California-Berkley. He was then accepted and studied at the University of California-San Fransico Medical School.

He then worked as a pharmacologist, internal med-icine doctor and radiologist and practiced at the Kaiser Hospital for more than 30 years.

The doctor had a penchant for seeing a need and then working to make sure the need was met. Throughout his life he supported many mission and education-based causes and, on several occasions, sent medical equipment to needy villages around the globe.

Interest in Mennonite/Anabaptist history and German heritage were some of his passions. His home was burned to the ground in a wildfire in the San Bernardino area in 2003, and the loss of his library and collection was especially devastating. In fact, it was through a friendship developed with the late Clarence Hiebert that initiated the first gifts to Tabor College. Schmitt anymously funded the Clarence Hiebert Excellence in Teaching award.

For Tabor College, Schmitt’s legacy will be one of generosity. His commitment to the Mennonite Brethren church motivated him to provide a gift that will enable the school to continue its mission of strengthening its teaching excellence, its graduate theological training and the preservation of its history. He will have fulfilled his lifelong desire to repay gener-osity with generosity.

Meet Jim PaulusRecently, I was sent a copy of a short essay I was

asked to write while I was a student reflecting on my “Tabor Experience”. It was a nice reminder of the impact Tabor had on my life.

The words “Tabor Experience” get thrown around a lot, but there truly is something special that happens for students who engage, and embrace this phenom-enon.

For me, it was a unique balance of support and challenge that developed multiple areas of my life. The support included a loving and accepting community of students, faculty, and staff. The challenges came as I was pushed to excel in my academic life, as well as socially, athletically, and most of all spiritually.

As an alum, I can attest that a distinctly Christ-centered education plays a significant role in the development of a student.

And now, many years later, I am overjoyed at the opportunity to give back to the community that pro-vided so much for me. It is great to be able to use the

Tabor College has again earned a national Tier 1 ranking in the 2012 edition of "Best Colleges" by U.S. News Media Group, being ranked 45th in the division of regional colleges in the Midwest. This is the eighth consecutive year the college has been recognized.

Dr. Jules Glanzer, Tabor College president, was pleased with the designation. “Tabor College con-tinues our commitment to provide an outstanding educational opportunity for students. It is not without continued pursuit of excellence from our highly-qualified faculty that we continue to provide students the environment which they can receive a first class, Christ-centered education.”

Dr. Frank Johnson, vice president of academic affairs, noted that Tabor’s emphasis on students was recognized in the ranking. “With the outstanding

Tabor College included in the Best Colleges listfaculty to student ratio, we can focus on the needs of the whole student, providing them with an excellent college experience. Our faculty members challenge our students to learn and to grow by modeling academic excellence.”

The annual listing provides insight as to how more than 1,400 accredited four-year schools compare on a set of up to 16 widely accepted indicators of excel-lence.

Among the many factors which are weighed in determining the rankings, the key measures of quality are: peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resourc-es, and alumni giving.

skills and passions that began to emerge as a student in my role in Student Life.

My vision for Student Life at Tabor College centers on relationships. It is my prayer that Tabor will con-tinue to provide students with multiple relationships that provide support, encouragement, accountability, and challenge. These relationships come from peers, faculty, and staff. It is in the context of these relation-ships, that Student Life can interact with students at multiple levels. We can meet them where they are at, academically, personally, and spiritually.

Each day brings multiple opportunities for Student Life staff to begin and develop these important rela-tionships. It is very exciting and rewarding work, being involved in the preparation of students for the lives that God has called them to.

After being away from Tabor for several years, it is awesome to see that the “Tabor Experience” continues. I am blessed to have the opportunity to join and serve in what God is doing on campus.”

The Julliard School’s American Brass Quintet's Sept. 28-29 visit to Tabor College was a positive experience for all involved according to Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Daniel Baldwin.

ABQ’s presence on campus—a rather expensive venture —was made possible by financial gifts to the

department. And he added, “These gifts are much appreciated and an integral part of providing the best possible education to the students." Not including Tabor instrumentalists, about 35 students from four area schools attended the master class conducted by the members of ABQ. "That," Baldwin said, "helped put Tabor on the map."

“Any time we can bring in extraordinary talent and invite area schools to be a part of it,” he said, “it sends the message…that we have dedication to giving our students the best education possible by exposing them to the best of the best.”

Despite the high-caliber status of ABQ, Baldwin was impressed with the way its members interacted with the participants. He said, “The quintet members were down-to-earth educators, and very friendly and approachable,” he said.

American Brass Quintet visit a positive event on the Tabor campusBy David Vogel, senior, Hillsboro, Kan.

The quintet concluded its time in Hillsboro with a concert at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.

According to Music Department Chair Dr. Bradley Vogel, the fact that ABQ was at our small college was outstanding in itself.

“Professional chamber ensembles are rarely in smaller markets such as Hillsboro,” Vogel said. “When we can be a place where such highly professional ensembles are a part of our culture, it creates an envi-ronment where extra learning experiences are avail-able.”

Both Baldwin and Vogel noted that the ABQ members also had a positive experience during their time in the com-munity.

“We heard from ABQ that Tabor was very accommodat-ing and service oriented,” Vogel said. “They felt very welcome and a part of things on campus, whereas they have sometimes felt on large cam-puses they were just sort of ‘there’ and a bit in the way.”

For two days, mem-bers of ABQ worked with students in the classroom, presenting master classes. The visit was capped off with a concert held at Hillsboro MB Church.

Art exhibit a great successWhen it comes to art, Shin-hee Chin is overflow-

ing with talent.Chin, Tabor art professor, had an exhibit displayed

over Homecoming weekend, Oct. 14-16.During this time, nearly 400 people visited Chin’s

exhibit that was located in the Historic Church on Tabor’s campus.

The exhibit, entitled “War and Peace,” delved into images of people who showed human dignity during war.

“Even though I didn’t experience the war, the memory is present,” Chin said. “Peace is a very active thing and I wanted to convey that.”

This exhibit, along with additional pieces, will be displayed in the Eisenhower Museum, in Abilene, Kan., from August 2012 to October 2012.

Record enrollment set; fourth year consecutive growth for Tabor College

The tradition continues and God continues to bless the Tabor College campus with another year of unprecedented growth. For the fourth consecutive year, registrar Deanne Duerksen announced record enrollment figures.

When combining all student programs, both grad-uate and undergraduate, there are 734 students pursu-ing degrees on the Hillsboro and Wichita campuses. This is the largest enrollment for the Marion County campus ever. The next highest enrollment benchmark was set in 1974.

According to Duerksen, the total head count over-all is up 9 percent from the 2010-11 academic year.

Glanzer praised the announcement. “It is a bless-ing to see this trend of growing enrollments con-tinue. For the fourth consecutive year, students have sought out Tabor College because of the rich learning environment in a decidedly Christian atmosphere,” Glanzer said. “It is a joy interacting with these stu-dents and watching the grace of God transform young lives. It also presents an opportunity for us to build and grow our campus and facilities to accommodate these young people. We will be looking to a campaign to help us accomplish that important task.”

In addition to Kansas, there are 26 states repre-sented in the student population, with California, Oklahoma and Texas making up the top three home states of students.

TC Wichita’s enrollment includes 129 students. There are 116 students working toward undergraduate degrees, with 13 students working toward advanced degrees.

There were 151 students in the freshman class and 72 new transfer students, comparing to 68 new trans-fers in the fall of 2010.

Board Approves CampaignAt their October meeting, the board of directors

decided to pursue a $13 million comprehensive cam-paign for the building of a fine arts complex. This fol-lows a case study completed by The Timothy Group on behalf of the college. Campaign leadership is now being developed.

Tuition frozen for coming school year

For the first time since the mid-1970s, Tabor College is going against the trend of many schools of the region by holding the line on the cost of tuition for the 2012-13 school year. Recognizing that the on-going economic downturn is making it challenging for families to afford college, President Dr. Glanzer has announced that Tabor College will freeze the cost of tuition.

“We have heard from our current students and their families that these tumultuous economic times have made it difficult for them to be able to afford col-lege. We want to help those students who have chosen Tabor College to be able to fulfill their desire of a col-lege education,” he said. “We want to make it clear that our students are important to us and we want to be compassionately responsive to their needs during this period of wide-spread economic uncertainty.”

This strategic move should reduce the likelihood that students will have to secure additional funding or loans for the coming year to cover their required classes.

Tabor College Wichita is excited to announce the launch of a new accelerated Master of Education pro-gram. Classes will start in January 2012 and students can earn their degree in 18 months.

Four student tracks are available. They include Classroom Leadership, Exceptional Communities, Educational Transformation, and an Individualized Emphasis. The online format of the program provides anytime, anywhere learning for students.

Students attend 12 on-site days of specialized learn-ing tailored to their schedules. The innovative program

Tabor College Wichita, School of Adult and Graduate Studies, held their biannual Nursing Program Pinning Ceremony on October 9, 2011, in Wichita Kan. Pinning ceremonies have been a nursing tradition for over 150 years, practiced at nursing schools worldwide. The recog-nition of those who dedicate their lives to caring for oth-ers began many years ago. The earliest badges were given to those who tended the sick, and were presented to members of the Knights of the Order of the Hospital of St. John the Baptist, a religious order who tended to the ill and wounded Crusaders in the 12th Century. During the ceremony each knight took the monastic vow to become “the serf and the slave” of his lord and the sick. The Maltese cross was pinned to his black habit which was draped over his armor.

The tradition of the nursing pin and the ceremo-nial pinning originated in the 1860’s at the Nightingale School of Nursing at St. Thomas's Hospital in London. Having been recently awarded the Red Cross of St. George for her selfless service to the injured and dying in the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale chose to extend the honor to her most outstanding graduate nurses by presenting each of them with a medal for excellence. Today, the ritual continues. Upon completion of a nurs-ing program, nurses are pinned with a specially designed

pin, from the colleges they attended. At Tabor College we have our own nurs-

ing pin with its own symbolic meaning. It consists of four symbolic elements: the cross, stalks of wheat, interlocking TC, and

a lamp. Primary to the design of the pin is the cross which is identified not only

with Christianity, but also with the medical profession. The cross is the foundation of the pin in the same way that Christian faith is the foundation of the lives of Tabor College's RN-BSN

graduates and the care provided by them. The second element, wheat,

surrounds the pin. First brought to Kansas by Mennonite Russians, wheat is symbolic of the Mennonite heritage of Tabor College. Wheat is also a

New program launching in Januaryalso incorporates Gallup’s StrengthsQuest Assessment. After completing 32 graduate hours, students will gradu-ate with their Master of Education degree, will increase their earning potential, and will be equipped to trans-form their schools.

Requirements for admission into the Master of Education program include a Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university and an overall grade point average of 2.7 or at least 3.0 in the last 60 semes-ter-hours of undergraduate study. wholesome, nutritious food, important for good health and well-being, and nurses' goals are to restore good health and well-being in their patients.

The interlocking TC, associated with Tabor since its founding in 1908, relays the strength of tradition found at Tabor College.

Lastly, the lamp is associated with the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale. This represents the Tabor nursing program’s ties to the basis of modern nursing, yet also looks to the future with rays extending outward. The complete pin is symbolic of what Tabor College stands for and how this is incorporated into the RN-BSN program.

This fall 14 nurses completed the nursing pro-gram: Mary Boman, Jeanne Graf, Julie Joy, Helena Liu, Jamie Logan, Leah Lowry, Rhonda Melvin, Gemi Miller, Alexis Overcast, Julie Pierce, Kathy Schneider, Robin Schwerdtfeger, April Torske, and Denise Worely-Schroeder.

On November 6, 2011, five nurses from Tabor College were inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International, Epsilon Gamma Chapter-At-Large. Nurses are chosen for this recognition based on their cumula-tive G.P.A. These nurses are Alison Heimerman, Julie Joy, Jennifer Russell, Krista Thurber, and Lorrie White. Sigma Theta Tau International is nursing’s International Honor Society that is a global community of nurse leaders who lead others through “knowledge, scholarship, service and learning to improve the health of the world’s people.”

Jamie Logan, left, received her pin from Linda Moody, chair of the TCW nursing pro-gram.

The Tabor College men’s and women’s basketball teams sponsored a food drive on Saturday Sept. 24, at the Tabor College vs. the University of Saint Mary football game.

Each fan who brought a non-perishable food item to the game received a discounted admission to the game. Fans donated 241 canned food items, 55 dry goods, and $50 was collected and donated to the Main Street Ministries Food Bank in Hillsboro, Kan.

Head Men’s Basketball Coach Micah Ratzlaff understands the importance of this effort. “The Men's Basketball team is extremely excited to help support this food drive,” Ratzlaff said. “There is a real need for food in this county. Hopefully, this drive will help in that area and we can collect a good amount to really make a difference.”

Head Women’s Basketball Coach Shawn Reed was equally excited about the project. “The Lady Bluejay basketball team is thrilled to partner with the men's basketball team at Tabor to assist the vital work of the Main Street Ministries Food Bank,” Reed said. “We believe it is an important part of our ministry to give back to our local community and the food bank fills such an important role in providing a basic necessity to those in need. So often we take for granted the abundance of food we are blessed to have and it is our hope that people will give from that abundance to people who are not so fortunate.”
