THE ARTFUL SNOWFLAKE TABLE RUNNER By Peggy True

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS From Paula Nadelstern’s Benartex collection called Artful Snowflake 6891M ICE CRYSTALS PANEL 1 panel 2599M-57 VOX Blue Silver 2 yards 6894M STARRY NIGHT Midnight 1 yard for binding.

From Paula Nadelstern’s Benartex collection called Marbella 1714 MARBELLA MIDNIGHT 1 yard for backing

FINISHING SUPPLIES Pellon Fusible Fleece doubledSulky Sliver Silver Thread Assortment of sequins and beads for embellishments

The hexagons were drafted to fit the dimensions of the panel’s snowflakes, using 1/4” graph paper and a compass.

Plastic templates were then made using a clear plastic sheet (ie: Dritz, Quilters Rule)

DIRECTIONS Here is the graph used when preparing the snowflakes. The large template is 12” from point to point. After placing it onto a Snowflake, I could see that additional 1/8” was needed all around to give adequate seam allowances. I felt it important to align with the rays as closely as possible, and to avoid cutting too closely. I used Pilot Frixion pens to mark (on wrong side of fabric).

DIAGRAM: Showing template placed over image of Snowflake (on back of fabric). Needed just a bit more seam allowance.

DIAGRAM: Largest template with lines for alignment on the Snowflake images..

Various sizes within the master graph correspond to the snowflake sizes on panel. See-through plastic templates made from graph as seen in photo above.

Critical for success: Always think about seam allowances beyond the images on the fabric.

I made smaller templates to fit the smaller images.

On one of the snowflakes, a point was sacrificed to accommodate the neighboring one, so I had to piece in a scrap of solid blue to fill out the hexagon. It was not noticeable in the finished work.

HINT: Do you know that Frixion pens are heat erasable? So if you need to, just iron away any lines you don’t like and start again.

BORDERS The VOX borders are cut using the same template. “Y” seams are necessary for attaching the borders and their mitered corners.

Note the orange lines along the template edges. This marks the border sections. Need 6 matching pieces per Snowflake.

You have to decide to use either blue or silver at the inner edges. I used it both ways. It is helpful to cut the Vox into strips. Notice that there are differences in the varied strips. You can trim down the width of the VOX on the smaller snowflakes after you finish piecing them to any size you wish.

DIAGRAM: Template laid on Vox Stripe. It is best to cut the strips from the yardage before using template to capture the shapes. Need 6 matching per snowflake. Use the same template used for snowflake center. Y - Seams connect borders to center.

A single snowflake unit completed

All 9 snowflakes, overlapped and stitched together ‘in the ditch’ of the binding.

FINISHING TOUCHES/ADDING EMBELLISHMENTS After quilting and binding individual Snowflakes, use Sulky Sliver Silver (or any silver metallic thread) thread to ‘thread paint’ as desired. Add embellishments of beads,

sequins, Stones, etc. Join by overlapping, then stitch in ditch of binding from the top. I did it by machine.
