Introduction

High-Frequency WordsA word list is included for an overview of the words astudent should easily recognize at each grade level andthat are used in the reading selections throughout theworkbook. For extra practice, prepare flashcards of thewords on the list for students to practice recognizingand reading quickly. This will help students develop asolid bank of sight words on which they can rely andthat are automatic.

Fluency PracticeReading fluency is the ability to read with expression, intonation, and a natural flow that sounds like talking.Fluency is essential for comprehension because the lack of it results in choppy, robotic reading that stands in the way of making sense out of a phrase or sentence.

WritingReading and writing are partner skills. Students aregiven opportunities to transfer their newly learned reading skills to authentic writing opportunities.

Extensions and Real-Life ApplicationsEach unit ends with a “More Things to Do” page thatincludes suggestions for hands-on experiences thatextend the theme. A list of books is also included forfurther study and enjoyment of the unit’s theme.

Answer KeyPages, with the answers completed, are reproduced in a miniature format at the back of the book to make checking answers quick and easy.

There are many ways to learn about your town. Take a walkdown the streets with your family. Look for places to visit such asa new restaurant or shop. Read your local newspaper to find outabout special events. Save and display flyers that tell aboutthings to see and do. Watch how different people help out inyour town. Think about ways you can help out, too. Here aremore ideas to consider:

Visit local shops to learn more about what people do. Plan time for an interview. Write down questions youwant to ask.

Find out about ways to volunteer. Plan a day to clean up the local park or plant flowers in a city garden.

Make a scrapbook of favorite places to visit in your town. Use brightly colored markers todraw pictures of places you want to share with others. Add a caption under each picture.

A shark is an amazing fish with rows and rows of teeth. Some sharkshave more than 20 rows of teeth. Sharks lose lots of teeth when theyare busy eating. Some sharks lose a tooth every ten days. When ashark loses a tooth, another one moves forward to take its place.Sharks use their teeth to catch and eat food. But not all shark teethlook the same. Sharks’ teeth come in different shapes and sizes. ANurse Shark has flat teeth for crushing food it finds on the bottom ofthe ocean. A Great White Shark has very sharp teeth forcutting big fishand othersea animals.Sharks don’tchew their food. They swallow things whole or in big chunks.

Comprehension: Critical Thinking

Read the story.Answer the questions.

One sunny morning, Ricky Raccoonand his family decided to go for a hike on Mt. Pike. Ricky ran downstairs after breakfastto get the backpacks. Mother Raccoon wasbusy in the kitchen making peanut butter sandwiches. Father Raccoon was busy in thegarage getting bug spray and a picnic blanket.

“Almost ready,” said Mama Raccoonas she put the food into the backpack.

“Let’s go,” said Papa Raccoon.

The Raccoon family drove to Mt. PikeNational Park. They put their backpacks onand walked to the ranger station. They lookedat the trail guide. There were lots of trails.

“Which trail should we take today?”asked Papa Raccoon.

“I want to hike the blue trail,” saidRicky. “It will take us to the top of the moun-tain. It’s only five miles long.”

“The top of the mountain will have anice view today,” said Papa Raccoon.

So Ricky Raccoon and his familystarted up the blue trail. It was a long androcky trail. Along the way, Ricky kept an eyeout for blue markers on trees. MamaRaccoon stopped along the trail to look atsome pink wildflowers. Papa Raccoon pulledout one of the sandwiches. He was very hun-gry. Ricky and his family walked and walked.Soon they came to a stream. The bridgeacross the stream had washed away.

“How can we get to the trail?” asked Ricky Raccoon as he looked at thefast-moving stream.

“Let’s use the stones as steps,” said MamaRaccoon. One at a time, Ricky Raccoon and hisfamily used the stones to get to the other side.Papa Raccoon found a blue spot on a tree.

“Here’s the trail,” said Papa Raccoon. “Let’s keep going”

They walked and walked farther up thetrail. Mama Raccoon flipped over an old log. PapaRaccoon pulled out another sandwich as Ricky andMama Raccoon watched a salamander burrowdeep under the log.

Soon the trail came to a stop. A large pinetree had fallen across the trail.

“How can we get over the tree?” askedRicky Raccoon as he looked up at the large tree.

“Let’s use the branches as handles,” saidMama Raccoon. One by one, Ricky Raccoon andhis family used the branches to climb over thelarge tree.

Finally, Ricky Raccoon and his family madeit to the top of Mt. Pike. They found a large flatrock to sit on and they ate their lunch. It was avery long hike. Ricky was very hungry. MamaRaccoon looked into the backpack.

“What’s for lunch?” asked Ricky.

“One peanut butter sandwich,” said MamaRaccoon as she glared at Papa Raccoon.

“And some blueberries,” said PapaRaccoon as he pointed to a large wild blueberry bush.
