IntroductionNon persistent virtual desktops deliver the full benefits of virtualization: flexibility, control, lower cost, etc, if you can deliver the same user experience.

They also present additional challenges, such as combining profiles, data andapplications into a consistent user workspace, especially when going beyond taskworkers profiles.

In this lab, you will learn how to use Profile Unity & FlexApp to streamline the migrationand management of users in Horizon View floating pools, even for the more demandingusers.

After a brief overview of Profile Unity and its components, you will perform a completevirtualization project :

• Migrate users from physical to Horizon View and XP to win 7 at the same time.• Apply context aware filters to deliver the right data/application/setting to the

right user/device/location• Capture and deliver additional applications on the fly

Note: A copy of the lab instructions is also available as a PDF document located on themain desktop (HOL-PRT-1309).

Overview

ProfileUnity is a User Management solution for physical and virtual Windows desktopsthat decouples user profiles from the OS making them universally portable.

FlexApp is a component of Profile Unity and allows administrators to package, manage, and deploy applications on a context-aware basis without altering the base image. It's agreat addition to VMware ThinApp by handling applications that cannot, or should not,be virtualized so that you can achieve 100% application coverage.

Architecture

The core components required to run ProfileUnity are already installed:

• Profile Unity is installed on a windows machine and a shortcut to themanagement console has been created on the desktop (ProfileUnity console)

Page 4: Table of Contents - VMware · 2016-05-05 · Back and forth, and again The configuration you have selected is designed for migration AND coexistence. So you can log back to the XP

• FlexApp packaging console is installed on a separate windows machine. Ashortcut to the machine has been placed on the desktop as well. Please note thatboth applicaitons can be installed on the same or separate machines.

• A folder containing ProfileUnity client tools is deployed on the network(\\corp.local\netlogon\ProfileUnity). This folder is required for ProfileUnity tofunction and should be located on a DFS replicated share. This is the samelocation where the configuration will be saved later.

• A GPO is created (automatically by ProfileUnity) and will trigger profile unityclient tools when a user logs into their machine. You can determine what machineand users will be managed by ProfileUnity by selecting which OU and groups areassociated with the GPO.

• User data, profile and applications (FlexApp) are stored on a sharedstorage which is accessible by a UNC path (\\corp.local\profiles)

• Zero touch agents: Upon the first boot of the machine, ProfileUnity willautomatically download client files to the desktop. No manual deployment isneeded.

Getting started

The Lab is configured with the following components already prepared:

• One XP desktop, stand alone, representing the existing state of the userenvironment before the migration. Although the machine is actually virtual, itsnot managed by Horizon View and will act as a standalone physical machine

• A floating pool of 2 Windows 7 desktops managed by Horizon View• 2 test users already created in Active Directory, user1 and user2• Profile Unity is installed, but the configuration is NOT active, therefore no users

are being managed yet.• FlexApp packaging console is installed• One application installer (Adobe Reader) is downloaded

In summary, the main components are already installed but not active. Users anddesktops are ready but not being managed

Tips

Always use logoff when existing a desktop session. Closing the session will notautomatically logoff the user.

We created a single generic password for the environment: VMware1!

Desktops : user1 or user2 / VMware 1!

Before the migration (optional)If desired, you can review the existing environment before starting the migration.

- Open the user profile shared folder

- log in the XP desktop

User profile

Open the shared folder for user profiles by clicking on the shortcut on the desktop. Thefolder should be empty since we haven't triggered ProfileUnity yet.

Click on the shortcut to the XP desktop

You’ll notice that ProfileUnity runs after logon (splash screen) but doesn’t apply anyconfiguration.

You can also open the “My Documents” folder and see 2 existing files:

• A small text file• A pdf document that cannot be opened yet since Adobe Reader is not installed on

the machine

Verify that ProfileUnity is not active

Create a document on the desktop.

Notice the document location, on the local c: drive.

Feel free to do the same and logoff the XP desktop before next step.

Starting the migrationDuring this step, you will change roles and become the end user, using his/her existingXP desktop for everyday tasks

Log in the XP desktop

Click on the XP desktop remote session shortcut

You will automatically be logged in as user1

You should see ProfileUnity splash screen being displayed during logon.

Change Stuff !

As a normal user would do during any typical day: change settings, create, editdocuments....

A few suggestions:

- Check the "My Documents" folder, it should contain existing documents that werepresent prior to the implementation of ProfileUnity

- Create new documents in the same folder or on the desktop

- Create shortcuts on the desktop

- Change the color of the background

Logoff

Go ahead and logoff of the XP dekstop session. You will see the ProfileUnity Splashscreen and a synchronization status message after logoff. While those pop-ups could beremoved in a production environment, we kept them so you could see the underlyingprogress.

Note: make sure you logoff. Closing the window will NOT log you off automatically.Since this is the first time ProfileUnity is activated, you will experience a longer log offtime than usual as all the users settings are being collected.

Check the migration status

Back to the main desktop, open the "user profile" share folder by clicking on thedesktop shortcut.

You should now see a folder named "user1" that contains portability and shell folders.

The user profile has been saved, upon log off, as the compressed files that you see inthe portability folder

User data is being synchronized (copied) in the background and will be redirected nexttime you log in.

To verify, login to the XP desktop again. Open "My Documents" and right click onone of the documents to check the properties and take a look at the file location. Ifredirected, it should point to a network path: \\controlcenter\profiles....If not, thesynchronization is still ongoing (wich may happen depending on the load in the HOLenvironment). Wait 2 minutes, log off, log back in again and repeat the steps.

Moving to Horizon View and Windows 7Now that you have logged on at least once from the XP desktop, your profile isautomatically ready and available for any type of machine and OS you will log into.

There is no step to "prepare" your new environment, you just need to log in.

The Horizon View pool is a floating pool of 32-bit Windows 7 desktops

Log in the Horizon View pool

Click on the VMware View client icon on the desktop and select the main pool

Log in as user1/VMware1!

Same as for the XP desktop, you should see the ProfileUnity load screen.

Look around

Data and any changes to the machine settings should have followed you automaticallyfrom the XP machine. Some items might take a moment to appear as a result ofperformance restrictions in the lab environment.

Feel free to change anything again or just log off .

Note: If you change the desktop background image of the XP desktop, you might noticethe color change when logging into the Windows 7 machine and sometimes the machinewill revert the color back to default (Black). This is due to a local policy that hasn't beenchanged.

Back and forth, and again

The configuration you have selected is designed for migration AND coexistence. So youcan log back to the XP machine, then windows 7, then XP again.. While your profile anddata stay with you

OverviewHaving migrated your users to Horizon View, you can now enjoy the benefits ofVirtualization: flexibility, control...

A Non-Persistent pool in Horizon View optimizes consolidation and cost, but couldpresent a management challenge, especially for application delivery.

FlexApp is designed to eliminate this challenge by complementing ThinApp technologyfor applications that doesn't require virtualization and need to be delivered simply andeffectively.

During this module, you will :

1) Capture an application using FlexApp

2) Deliver the application to the users accessing the View pool only

For this lab, we have selected Adobe Reader as the application to be captured, whichallows the user to finally open that PDF document initially located on their XP desktopsystem.

Capture the ApplicationThe Packaging console is already installed on a VM running in vSphere.

FlexApp captures the application at the thread level instead of differential to minimizerequirements. As such the FlexApp machine doesn't need to be an exact replica of theuser VM running in Horizon View, but it needs to use the same bit level OS (32 or 64).

Launch the FlexApp packaging console

Click on the FlexApp packaging console shortcut on the desktop to connect to theVM which will be used to perform the actual packaging process.

Once you are connected, go ahead and launch the application by clicking on theFlexApp packaging console shortcut. Login using admin/VMware1!

Create the package

Click on Create and enter the package information as follows:

Package name: Adobe Reader (or whatever name you want to give)

Installer location: \\controlcenter\software\installers\install_reader11_en_gtbd...

Note: For your convenience, a shortcut to the installer folder has been created on thedesktop.

Everything else can be left as default

When finished, click on Create to launch the capture process.

Capture process

FlexApp will enter a capture mode, creating the VHD where the application will becaptured and then launching the installer itself.

The Adobe installer will be launched automatically.

Follow the installation steps exactly like you would do for a normal installation.

Once completed, click on Finish

Wait until the installation capture is complete and click on Save

Completing the capture

The capture is complete, but the package remains in locked mode to allow furtherchanges if needed (changing metadata, icons, adding other applications…)

To finish the process, click on the “deactivate” icon (square).

Click on ok when ProfileUnity has completed the deactivation process.

The new package is now ready for use.

Close the FlexApp packaging session to return to the main desktop.

You are now ready to assign the Package to the View pool in ProfileUnity

Open the configuration that was created in the previous process, VMware HOLWindows...

Click on “FlexApp DIA” icon

Click on “Add FlexApp DIA rule”

Adding the package

Drag and drop the Adobe Reader package into the box “FlexApp packages to Install”

Change the filter to Windows 7 so this rule will only apply to the Horizon View pool.

Click on “Save”

Note: XP doesn’t support VHD format so FlexApp cannot be applied.

Update the configuration

Click on Update to save the changes.

Then click on the download icon and Download Configuration to save theconfiguration ini file to the following path \\controlcenter\netlogon\profileUnity

Note: If prompted to overwrite an existing file, go ahead and proceed tooverwrite the file.

ConclusionThat’s It !

You have successfully migrated a user from a physical XP desktop to a non-persistentWindows 7VM running in Horizon View.

You have also added an application, on the fly, to the View environment.

The configuration you have implemented is not locked down, and allows for co-existence between the 2 environments.

So if you have time, feel free to :

• Move between XP and 7• Switch users• Edit the existing configuration. You could, for example, add a drive mapping rule

to map the user profile folder to each user.
