2018 Season OutlookThe 2017 season was one to remember for the Saint Augustine’s University football faithful.

For the fi rst time in recent memory, the Falcons were at the top of the football standings. They tied for the best record in the CIAA Southern Division with a 5-2 conference mark including a 4-1 record against Southern Division opponents.

The Falcons were rolling during the second half of the schedule, winning four of their last fi ve games which led to a 5-5 overall mark, their fi rst non-losing record since 2012.

SAU picked up some impressive wins during that stretch. The Falcons beat perennially powerful Winston-Salem State University 17-14 for the fi rst time since 2010 and only the second time since the Rams returned to Division II.

The Falcons manhandled Johnson C. Smith University 24-0 on Homecoming Day and topped arch-rival Shaw 31-14 to take the Raleigh Classic in the season fi nale. Onlya three-point loss (34-31) to eventual Southern Divisionchamp Fayetteville State University prevented the Falconsfrom reaching their fi rst-ever CIAA Championship Game.

To say that Head Coach Tim Chavous is building momentum off last season’s success is an understatement. The Falcons are aiming high this season with the return of 53 lettermen and the addition of several talented newcomers.

The offense is nearly intact with nine returning starters including quarterback Darryl “D.J.” Johnson. A four-year

senior, Johnson has passed for 28 touchdowns and nearly 3,000 yards in his career. The backfi eld duo of Jeremiah Miller and Josh Glisson is also back with both runners combining for 1,322 yards and nine touchdowns.

The speedy Lenwood Joyner is anticipating a breakout year at wide receiver after ranking second on the team behind departing All-CIAA wide receiver Sam Boyd in receptions and touchdown catches the past two seasons. Anchoring the offense are All-CIAA honorable mention tackle Zack Jenkins, Joe Edwards and All-CIAA Rookie team member Tremaine Roundtree.

The defense will miss defensive lineman Chasz Cosby and linebacker James Hickman, both fi rst team All-CIAA selections a year ago, but returns seven starters. The trio of defensive lineman Keywan Morgan, All-CIAA rookie defensive back Demonte Hines and defensive back Roy Garris will lead the defense. The kicking game is in good shape as reliable Sean Smith returns for his senior season.

Like a year ago, the Falcons will prepare for their Southern Division foes with a challenging non-conference slate. They open on the road against Division I opponents Jacksonville University and North Carolina Central University before hosting defending CIAA champion Virginia State University in the home opener.

The Falcons expect to be peaking in the latter part of the season. They host two of their last three games at home including Fayetteville State for Homecoming (Oct. 20) and Shaw in the Raleigh Classic (Nov. 3). This time, the Falcons hope a fast fi nish will lead to something special.
