FELIPE D. VINLUAN, JR. IBARRA E. CRUZ
"Performance Analysis of a Combined Updraft-Stratified Downdraft (CUSD) Gasifier". Philippine Engineering Journal 1 O (1 ): 65-79 (1989).
The performance of the CUSD experimental gasifier was analyzed. The experiment was conducted at the Mechanical Engineering (M.E.) Power Laboratory, College of Engineering, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.
With the use of ipil-ipil wood chips as fuel, the CUSD gasifier was proven to have a favorable performance as evidenced by the heating value of the gas, color of the flame, specific gasification rate and gasification efficiency. The peak efficiency was obtained at L = 0.15 which corresponds to an airflow ratio (downdraft/updraft) of 7.34.
The CUSD gasifier possesses some desirable features which give it advantages over single-stage forced-draft gasifiers. These features include continuous gas production during fuel feeding, stable reaction zones even without tuyeres and movable grate, clean gas being prod~ced with the proper combination of downdraft and updraft airflow rates, and effective removal of ash even without a movable grate. If translated into the user's benefits, these features could mean lower initial investment cost, easier maintenance and simpler operation than existing designs.

"Production of Oleochemicals: Medium Chain Triglyceriqes (MCT) and Glyceryl Monoesters from Coconut Oil". The Philippine Journal of Science 120(3): 215-225 (1991 ).
Methods have been developed for the esterification of glycerol with coconut oil or its fatty acid and methyl ester to produce medium chain triglycerides (MCT) and glyceryl monoester separately. Reaction parameters, i.e., molar ratio of the reactants, temperature, time and catalyst were optimized in the laboratory for both processes to effect maximum yield and high purity of the products.
Complete esterification of glycerol with coconut fatty acid (Ca - C10 ) gave 68% yield of MCT with 99% purity. Partial esterification of glycerol with different starting materials such as whole coconut oil, coconut fatty acid (C16 - C 1e ), palm stearin and tallow resulted in monoesterwith a purity of 45-55%. Bench scale production and purification of these products has also been studied and established. The physico-chemical properties of the products were determined and found to conform favorably with standard commercial specifications.
Pre-feasibility studies of commercial production of 25 tons of each product per month were also conducted to evaluate the economic viability of each process.

"A Generic Revision of the Subfamily Asopinae, with Consideration of Its Phylogenetic Position in the Family Pentatomidae and Superfamily Pentatomoidea (Hemiptera-Heteroptera). The Philippine Entomologist 8(3): 865-961 (1991).
The phylogenetic relationships within the superfamily Pentatomoidea and the family Pentatomidae were studied and inferred from comprehensive character analyses of the currently recognized families and pentatomid groupings. The proposed phylogenies for these taxonomic levels are represented by two separate cladog rams, together with a discussion of each character variable investigated. The Pentatomoidea, Pentatomidae and the subfamily Asopinae are shown to be holophyletic groups at their respective levels. The family Urostylidae is shown to be the most primitive and the family Pentatomidae the most advanced within the superfamily Pentatomoidea. The probable sister-group of the Asopinae is found within the subfamily Pentatominae. The Podopinae does not appear to be closely related to the Asopinae and is shown to be polyphyletic. The proposed phylogeny of the family Pentatomidae deviates from currently established schemes of
"Classification and suggests an alternative scheme based mainly on genitalic characters.

"Ecological Studies on Laguna de Bay". UP Los Banos Journal 1 (1 ):17-26, 27-52 (1990).
A suNey of the composition and apundance of phytoplankton species in selected localities of Laguna de Bay was done from February to May 1984. The following water quality parameters were determined: water temperature,
29
pH, water transparency and electrical conductivity. Phytoplankton composition and species density differed among the various localities. The diatoms were numerically dominant, followed by the blue-green algae Microcystisas, the lone species that formed an algal bloom.
This study was conducted in Mayondon, Los Banos from October 1984-0ctober 1985 to determine the possible interrelationships of meteorological conditions with the changes in the physico-chemical water quality characteristics and the biological components of phytoplankton communities in an area.
The end of the rainy season was characterized by high turbulence brought about by northeasterly winds. This resulted in high total solids content, which reduced visibility through the water column. Rising electrical conductivity resulted most likely from the inflow of salts caused by lake tributaries and not from evaporation which remained low. Lake water cleared up in the hot dry months, at the same time that electrical conductivity increased with the increased rated of evaporation. The rainy months were accompanied by reduced water transparency, rising nitrogen and phosphorus levels and decreased electrical conductivity.
Three main algal groups were represented. In December after the rainy season, Microcystis aeruginosa began forming peak populations. High numbers of this algal were again formed during the hot dry months while other algal species maintained ,smaller numbers. Low nutrients prevailed while M. aeruginosa was in bloom densities. The rainy period eliminated the bloom of M. aeruginosa giving way to a more diverse group of diatoms that gained dominance as nutrients increased.

"A Top-Down Econometric Model fora Philippine Region". Philippine Review of Economics and Business 28(2):127-153 (1991).
This paper demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a supply-determined top-down econometric model for a Philippine region. The specification, estimation, historical simulation, and ex-post forecast of the model for Region 7 (Central Visayas) are presented. The simulations show that the model tracks the sample period and ex-post values fairly well. The model could serve as a prototype for the other regions. Ttle regional models could form a system of satellite models that could be linked to a national model which can then be used to determine regional forecasts consistent with a national forecast.

"An Evaluation of the Philippine Participatory Communal Irrigation Program". Institute of Philippine Culture, Ateneo de Manila University 120 pp. (1986).
Nowadays, participation and empowerment are popular slogans but the literature on these subjects is long on rhetoric and short on evidence. The Philippine participatory communal irrigation program is a very innovative approach to irrigation development and the fact that a systematic evaluation of results shows thatthe approach achieved most of its intended results lends scientific credibility to the value of the approach. De Los Reyes and Jopillo, through a creative combination of research methods captured the evidence that participation does make a difference.

"A Descriptive Model of Cropping:,Decision-Making: AppHcation to Crop Diversificiation in Irrigated Rice Farms". Transactions of the National Academy of Science and Technology 12:295-31 O (1990).
The research sought to model the cropping decision making of farmers vis-a-vis diversified crops. A three-stage descriptive model of cropping decision making under uncertainty was developed and tested in six case studies of successful crop diversification in irrigated rice farms. The six case studies consisted of tobacco farming in San Fabian, Pangasinan; cotton growing in Urdaneta and Manaoag, Pangasinan; tomato growing in Sta. Barbara and Mapandan, Pangasinan; onion growing in San Jose, Nueva Ecija; and garlic, corn, and peanut growing in Laoag, !locos Norte. A total of 266 farmers from the different sites were interviewed. Overall, the cropping
32
decision tree model found empirical support in the various cases except for the case of mungbean which was not a free choice situation and for the case of corn and peanut which were not the major diversified crops but only subsidiary crops. Results indicate that the cropping decision tree model is applicable to the choice of a major diversified crop involving a free choice situation. The model appears promising as a diagnostic guide which can be used by change agents for determining whether or not farmers are ready to crop diversify.

"Fertility Following Clitoral Stimulation of Heat Synchronized Carabaos". Philippine Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences 17(1 and 2): 1-7 (1991).
A 2 x 2 and 3 x 2 factorial experiment in randomized complete block design (RCBD) was conducted to determine the effect of clitoral stimulation on the fertility of heat synchronized carabaos. One hundred sixty three (163) animals were used in three separate trials with two treatment groups per trial: control and with 30 second clitoral stimulation after each insemination. Parity, tone of uterus and site of semen deposition were also used as criteria in subdividing the main groups.
The pregnancy rates of animals that received clitoral stimulation were significantly (P<0.05 or P<0.01) higher than those of control for both caraheifers (52.98 vs 31.41 %) and caracows (52.68 .vs 27.07%) under all uterine conditions: tone 1 (53.33 vs 31.75%), ton_e 2 (35.83 vs 22.82%) and tone 3 (76.65 vs 42.22%); and in both site of semen placement, cervix (43.99 vs 22.85%) and uterus (60.92 vs 37.81 %). Fertility was also significantly (P<0.05) higher when semen was deposited in the uterus

"Mechanism of Resistance of Eggplant (Solanum melongena Linn.) to the Cotton Leafhopper (Amrasca biguttula Ishida). II. Morphological and Biochemical Factors Associated with Resistance". Philippine Journal of Crop Science 15(2):79-84 (1990).
Significant differences were observed between the resistant and susceptible eggplant varieties in plant height, leaf color, size and thickness, midrib diameter, tissue hardness, and trichome characteristics. However, only the last features were correlated with cotton leafhopper resistance. There was a highly significant and negative linear association between length, number of branches or density of leaf trichomes and nymphal preference or adult oviposition.
Among the nine chemical components of the resistant plants studied namely, moisture, dry matter, total sugars, starch, total N, total free amino acids, ash, fiber and fat contents, only the last constituent was significantly and negatively correlated with nymphal feeding preference and adult oviposition. The resistant P1-381272-2 also had the highest amount of alkaloids, suggesting the possibility that the compound(s) was also a resistance factor.

Based on several demonstration farm trials participated in by six farmercooperators in Atok and Buguias, the new biological control technology u3ing P. li/acinus against nematodes attacking potato proved effective and can be adopted by potato farmers. As a result of the nematode control, potato plants appeared more vigorous and gave much higher yield (50-100%) than the nontreated check. The effects of P. lilacinus application was comparable with and in some cases better than the carbofuran treatment. The tuber-dip application generally gave comparable results with the soil-mix method.

Forty healthy adult patients who were scheduled for modified radical mastoidectomy at the Philippine General Hospital were randomly divided into two groups. Group A patients underwent general endotracheal anesthesia using the closed system method (intermittent circuit-injection technique) while the semi-closed system was used in Group B. Heart rate, blood pressure were measured at regular intervals. Fi02 , oxygen saturation, and end-tidal C02 values were measured using a calibrated Ohmeda Oxicap

4700. Data gathered from both groups and subjected to statistical analysis did not show any significant differences. The amount of anesthetic agent used in the closed system group was significantly lower than in the semiclosed system group. The actual amount of isoflurane used in the closed system method approximated the predicted amount based on Lowe's square root of time model. Results of this study show that the closed system method of general endotracheal anesthesia is a safe and less expensive alternative to the standard semi-closed system.

"Surgical Infection Surveillance at the Philippine General Hospital". Philippine Journal of Surgical Specialties 47(3):109-115 (1992).
The report describes a 4 1 /2 year project from May 1987 to December 1991 that attempted to establish a surgical infection surveillance system in the 195-bed Department of Surgery at the Philippine General Hospital. It was observed that reliable surveillance was not attained by merely relying on surgical residents to do case finding and reporting. The presence of a trained full-time Infection Control Nurse (lCN) directly observing all surgical patients at risk, and responsible to the department resulted in complete surveillance. A 17.4% decrease (p=0.013) in Overall Operative Infection Rate was observed, droppping from 6.9% (367/5290) in May 1989-April 1990 to 5.7% (293/5096) in January-September 1991. A more dramatic 54.8% decrease (p=OOOO) in Postoperative Pneumonia was observed in the same period, dropping from 3.1 % (161 /5290) to 1.6% (70/5096). The departmental surgical wound infection rate in 1991 was 2.4% (125/5096). Almost half of
36
the cases of surgical wound infections occurred after hospital discharge and was detected at the outpatient clinics. Comparison of infection rates between time periods, department sections and specific operations are presented.

Whereas in the literature, the staphylococcus and the tubercle bacillus have always been implicated as the causes of phlyctenulosis, this paper was able to prove for the first time other causes of phlyctenular disease such as the hemophilus, moraxella and the chlamydia. It has also shown the binding potential of the T.B. bacilli and the staphylococcus.
The author has painstakingly examined and studied an unusually large number of cases of the disease which is still unknown in the western world but at the present time is rampant and has caused considerable blindness in the third world, such as the Philippines.

"A Study of the Evolution of Optic Neuritis Caused by Ethambutol in Rabbits". The Philippine Journal of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases 16(2):42-46 (1987).
The histological and biochemical changes in rabbits given from 50 to 200 mg per kilogram body weight of Ethambutol were followed over a period of 2-12weeks. The significant observations were: 1) Ultrastructural changes were demonstrated earlier than the clinical appearance of the optic neuritis. 2) As early as 2 weeks, axonal dilatation was shown in the 50 mg samples. 3) At 4 weeks duration, a "myelin-like" structure within the axonal cytoplasm appeared in the samples given 100 mg dose. 4) Biochemical analysis of the retina and the optic nerve showed proportionate increase in proteins and lipids. It is concluded that these histochemical and biochemical changes are coincident to demyelination in the optic nerve and retina.
