a prolonged relation and bond that would continue and prosper. And for this he ensured for a
deep and close involvement from the side of the university. While addressing students, he
highlighted that such programme and activities are extremely useful for students in ways to
develop their comprehension about village, grassroots issues and various systems of

person from the community who facilitate the volunteers for the transact walk. In this walk
volunteers had to walk all around the village and prepared a route map for the village. It
helped volunteers to get familiar about which road goes to where and who live where, etc. All
the groups were sent in four directions of East, west, north and South. In this way, the
findings from all the groups helped the volunteers to develop final route map of the village.
The findings of this walk helped the volunteers to develop social resource mapping of the
village.

glance and that is because this tool is called bird eye view of the community as one can easily
denote things given on the map. It not only provides the understanding of the community, but
the process itself helps in involving community members and ensuring their participation.
Different groups of volunteers gathered the community members at different places like
Anganwadi, Schools and Community Halls, etc. and involved them developing the map of
their village. Hence, this tool appeared to be very effective mean of developing rapport with
the community members and help in blending a positive relation between the volunteers and
community people.
In this process, volunteers got a lot of information about settlement, pattern, BPL houses,
School, Anganwadies, Bazar, religious places, play ground for children etc. a glimpse of
resource mapping can be better viewed through the given pictures of Social Resource
Mapping developed by the volunteers in the village:

Activity – 4: Force Field Analysis
Force Field Analysis is a useful decision-making technique which is frequently used in
participatory research. It helps researchers to make a decision by analyzing the forces for (or
enabling factors) and forces against (or disabling factors) a given condition, and it helps you
communicate the
reasoning behind your
decision. This is used
to examine various
social issues and
problems from
people’s points of
view meaning thereby
what and how
community members
think about their
problems. The role of
facilitator is to
encourage and help
participants to discuss
and explore the
factors related to their
problem i.e. the
disabling factors and
at the same they are
also guided and
assisted to discuss and
find out plausible way
out to change the
condition from
negative to positive i.e. the disabling factors. As the main purpose of the camp was to find
out problems faced by the community members, the volunteer undertook this exercise at two

levels. One group (consisted of female volunteers) carried the exercise with the lactating
mothers at Anganwadi Centre along with the Anganwadi staff and one at Urdu Primary
School with school teachers and parents of the drop out children.
Activity – 5: Socio Economic Survey
A socio economic survey was done by the volunteers where 150 households were
covered randomly in the village on the basis of observation (housing conditions- those
having asbestos house with no concrete roof, etc.). For this a one pager interview
schedule was designed by the volunteers. The schedule is majorly divided four parts.
The first part consist of the background information of the family, second part consists
of the family profile that would help in assessing the occupation profile, income level,
people in productive age in a household, children education, dropout, etc. the third part
of the interview schedule focuses on details of assets owned by the family. The filled in
interview schedule will be analysed in coming days.
Based on the findings of this pilot sample study as well as the findings of PRA
exercises, a thorough presentation will be delivered in village where all
stakeholders would be present including District Collector, Village Pradhan and
his team, villagers, and university representatives. On the basis of the presentation, a
detailed course of action will be drafted where major focus would be given to women,
children and disabled.
A sample of socio economic survey interview schedule is given in the next page:

The Gram Panchayat Narsingi is located at a distance of 8 km (approx.) from MANUU Main
Campus, Gachibowli, Hyderbad. This Gram Panchayat comes under Rajendranagar Mandal
of District Rangareddy, Telangana. Narsingi Pin code is 500075 and postal head office is
C.B.I.T. As per Census 2011, it has a population of 9449 out of which 66% are Hindus, 32%

towards west, Hyderabad Mandal towards East, Ramchandrapuram Mandal towards North,
Quthbullapur Mandal towards North.
Hyderabad, Singapur, Sangareddy, Farooqnagar are the nearby Cities to Narsingi.
This Place is in the border of the Rangareddi District and Hyderabad District. Demographics
of Narsingi
The village has witnessed high degree of urbanization due to its proximity with GHMC
periphery and Nehru outer ring road (ORR). In consequence, the agriculture has just vanished,
and the real estate business is at peak resulting into high disparity among the natives. There is
a glaring prosperity among the few and acute deprivation among the majority population.
There is high struggle for livelihood and adverse effects on the education of the children. The
large concentration of marginalized groups, their acute deprivation amidst prosperity and
pathetic educational scenario are key factors that makes a strong ground for an appropriate
and qualified intervention so that the conditions of the underserved can be improved. At this
point the university-village partnership can be instrumental in achieving the goal.
Major source of livelihoods are manual labour, famous buffalo market, grossery shops,
village hat (every Thursday), mechanics, painter, mesons, etc.
Based on interaction with villagers, community transact walk and social resource mapping,
volunteers also identified educational institution of the village: One Primary School (Telugu

government. The volunteers identified 8 Anganwadis, 4 PDS Shops, one Rural Health Centre
