I deal with all of ourclients and developers and also checkand file the reports for our LandDevelopment Department. I have been aSafety Officer since 1984 and I was justmade the Regional Safety Monitor for ourcompany. I could not have gotten thisposition without my diploma and trainingin AutoCAD, computer applications andtechnical communications.
I made a lot of friends at Loyalist and Istill talk to them when I can. Without theirsupport I would not have made it. We hada lot of fun supporting each other whenone of us was having a bad day.

Getting my Survey EngineeringTechnician diploma from Loyalist Collegewas the most challenging and mostsatisfying accomplishment I have everexperienced. After working as a FieldEngineer for over twenty years, there wasnothing I had not or could not build. Ineeded a new challenge and that was tomove into a management position whereI could share my knowledge and vastexperience with other people. Havingnever turned on a computer until I went toLoyalist, I had my work cut out for me. Ihad been a surveyor since I was eighteenand I had no office experience at all.
Now I am the Construction Coordinatorfor the biggest consulting engineering

Why Choose Loyalist CollegeHANDS-ON LEARNING:Environment Technology student Abigail Morkem came to Loyalist aftercompleting her Biology degree at McMaster University.“I feel that thecollege learning style is much more hands-on and the topics are directlyrelated to how you would use the skill in the workforce. At university, the learning style seemed much more a matter of memorizing hugequantities of information as well as learning general concepts andtheories. College definitely touches more on application learning.Thebest part about my program is that you get the hands-on-training thatemployers are looking for.We get to use laboratory instruments thatmost colleges and universities don’t even have.”
Loyalist Students Present Research Findings toBrighton MunicipalityThe Brighton Municipal Council was presented with the findingsand recommendations of two research projects conducted by Loyaliststudents Kiel Martin, Civil Engineering Technology and ChantalElliott,Architectural Technology.“We gained an incredible amount ofknowledge from their efforts,” said Bruce Davis, Chief AdministrativeOfficer, Municipality of Brighton.“A scan of our municipal staffreveals that seven of our 34 employees are Loyalist grads and fourothers are graduates of other community colleges.A great testament tocommunity college education.”

I have many fond memories about mytime at Loyalist - the interesting courses, all the labs that we got to perform and theawesome teaching staff. But my mostcherished memories would be of all thegreat friends that I made over the pastthree years and all the great times we hadboth on and off campus. Best of all, we’restill having great times together, eventhough we’re not at Loyalist anymore. Wealso have our personally decorated labcoats and our end of the year shirts thatwe all designed and signed to help usremember the good old times.

Loyalist was a great place to get to myeducation. After finishing the two-yearChemical Engineering Technicianprogram, I decided to go back for thethird year of the program because of themore specialized curriculum and potentialfor increased job opportunities – and I amglad I did. Class sizes were small andprovided lots of one-on-one instructionwith professors, and the skills I developedin my third-year studies helped mesucceed in being hired as a ChemicalTechnologist at Queen’s University.
My laboratory skills are vital to my jobsince I’m involved with running the labsfor the undergraduates in the ChemicalEngineering Department and helping

I chose Loyalist because I wasimpressed with the focus theirenvironmental program had on sciences.I stayed for the three year programbecause each and every course wasrelevant to the field. The instructors in theprogram are some of the brightest, mostdedicated people I have ever met. Theywere an inspiration and I would not bewhere I am today without their supportand guidance.
As an Environmental Consultant in asmall local firm, my responsibilities rangefrom report writing to contaminated siteremediation to sewer sampling. I need tokeep up to date on training, regulations, and technologies to provide my clientswith the best service possible. Loyalistdid not teach me every skill I need toknow in my job - no college could, aseach job is different. But it was at Loyalist

Why Choose Loyalist CollegeATHLETICS:Loyalist’s athletic programs provide opportunities for allstudents to participate in a wide range of different sports -intercollegiate competition, recreation, outdoor education and instructional.
“The highlight of my two years of playing varsity basketball at Loyalistwas definitely during my first year when we came first in the EasternRegion – but as a whole package, it’s been the people I’ve met, thecoaching staff, the road trips and the challenge of this level ofcompetition. Being part of the team definitely helped ease my transitionfrom high school to college. You get to meet students from all differentprograms, not just as teammates, but those that come to the games tocheer us on. I feel very honoured to receive the Male Athlete of the Yearaward. It’s going to be hard to leave, but I’ll be back to participate in anyway that I can. Loyalist will continue to be part of who I am for manyyears to come.”

I am a 34 year old, single mother of abeautiful eight year old boy. After the birthof my son, I found that working at themall did not, and would not, provide astable lifestyle for either of us. When myson started school, I too embarked on ascholastic path and enrolled in full-timestudies at Loyalist College.
In May 2005, I graduated on the Dean’sList with the Biotechnology Technicianand Bio-food Technician diplomas. Idecided to continue my studies in the fallfor the advanced diploma and in May2006 graduated again on the Dean’s Listwith a Biotechnology TechnologistDiploma. The week following graduation, I
was hired as a Haematology Technicianat MDS Laboratories in Belleville. Thisposition helped me to gain laboratoryexperience while seeking a job moresuited to my biotechnology studies. Iachieved my career goal in Januarywhen Bioniche Life Sciences hired me asa Laboratory Technologist. I find my workchallenging, financially rewarding andproof that focus and hard work reallydoes pay off in the long run.
Loyalist College also has transferagreements with many universities. I amcurrently working towards my degreepart-time while I work in my field. Thankyou Loyalist College!

I left Belleville the day after mygraduation from Culinary Management atLoyalist College and headed out to a newlife in the Canadian Rockies. I wassending out resumes, trying to figure outwhere I was going to work. Pastry is mytrue calling so when the Delta Banffoffered me a pastry chef position Icouldn’t pass it up.
I think the most rewarding aspect ofmy job is the constant learning. Trainingmyself to be a pastry specialist holds memore accountable about knowing what
I’m doing and talking about. I have towalk the walk. I like the fact that I havefree reign to create new dishes. I get todo a lot of experimenting.
One of the most valuable skills that Ilearned in school is the principle ofteamwork. It is important to be able to workas part of a team even if you don’t initiallyknow all the people that you work with.
Further education will definitely be apart of my future. In ten years I hope tohave attained my pastry chef papers andbe studying the art of chocolate.

ACCOUNTING ANDBUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
Business Students to Partner with BusinessCommunityFour Loyalist Business Administration students received a positiveresponse from their presentation to the Belleville EconomicDevelopment Committee.Their idea was to take the skills they werelearning in their program and offer their assistance to the City ofBelleville in helping to meet the business needs of the community.
A couple of months before mygraduation from Business Administration,I was offered a full-time position as theOffice Manager for the StudentGovernment at Loyalist College. I did myplacement within that departmentbecause I had already accepted the full-time job. I was well prepared for theworkforce due to the many opportunities toapply what I had learned in my classes tothe real world. Some of those opportunitiesincluded working part-time as areceptionist and being involved with thecommunity through special class projects.
During my second year of the BusinessAdministration program, I decided to worktowards a double diploma in Accounting. Isigned up for Continuing Education so thatI could do my Accounting courses online. This made it easier to balance classes, apart-time job, etc. and I was also able tocomplete my Accounting projects at myown pace. Balancing everything that I hadon the go definitely helped improved mytime management skills.
What I found to be most valuable was
the chance to improve my communicationskills in the Business Administrationprogram. Before Loyalist College, I wasextremely quiet but that changed withclass presentations and communityprojects. Now as the Office Manager, I amconfidently interacting with staff, students, suppliers and visitors to the office.
Helping to organize events and activitiesfor students is immensely rewarding. Theirpositive reactions allow me to see theresults of my work. I also find it satisfyingto assist students with their inquiries andconcerns. I enjoy working with andhelping students who are members of theStudent Government to achieve theirgoals on the Board of Directors.
I think that the Business Administrationprogram offers great opportunities forstudents. There are so many differentaspects to working in the world ofbusiness so chances are good that youwill find an area that sparks your interest.

Immediately after my graduation I wasasked by a prominent member of ourcommunity how much of my skill andability were “me” and how much weretaught to me at Loyalist College. Myanswer was that although my work ethicand out-going personality were always apart of who I was, my pre-Loyalist skillswere raw and unpolished and that theBusiness Administration program helpedme tap into my potential. The programalso equipped me with many skills thatare in high demand with organizationsfrom all sectors. I gathered a vast array ofboth hard and soft business skills from theclassroom environment and was given theopportunity to reinforce this knowledge byworking with highly respectedorganizations within our community.
Today, my position as EducationAssistant at Quinte Health Care is alwaysinteresting and can take me from patientcare areas to finance, to focus groupsand committee meetings all in one day.
I have been fortunate to have beeninvolved in some major projects so early
in my career. My roles have included co-development of complex business cases, critical pathing, revamping of our entirecorporate orientation program and manypresentations with attendees ranging fromsenior management, community members, clinical professionals and many others.
Another part of my career that I enjoy agreat deal is teaching. Currently I cover alarge portion of our corporate orientationtopics ranging from hospital codes, disaster and emergency preparedness,HR functions, privacy and confidentialityand many more. This past winter I wastasked with traveling between our fourhospitals to teach emergency prepared-ness and have been asked to teach morehospital code procedures this fall.
I have so many great memories of mytime at Loyalist. I met my fiancé and mostof my wedding party at the College. I alsohave fond memories of working oncampus at the SAL Lab and CAL Center. Both of these jobs bolstered my resumeand gave me many skills that I use on adaily basis.
To those students considering theBusiness Administration Program, Iencourage you to take your academicsseriously, but do not stop there. Reinforceyour classroom learning with volunteerand project experience. It is a competitiveindustry - differentiate yourself from therest of the pack. Do the little extras.

My time at Loyalist - Bancroft Campuswas a welcome change from myuniversity experience. The region is apeaceful location for this high pressureand demanding program. The folks arefriendly, and while the driving to and fromthe campus can be challenging, thescenery is gorgeous all four seasons. Myclass was very small compared touniversity standards and I made greatfriends from across Ontario.
The part-time program at Loyalist wasmy best option even though I was acceptedto other full-time programs. Loyalist hadthe only Paramedic program where Icould balance part-time employment, family and child commitments and part-time schooling for 2 years.
I truly enjoy the daily variety built intoparamedicine and the satisfactiongarnered from helping people. My most
valuable learning experiences were notthe academic kind, but practical hands-on“tidbits” passed on to us from ourinstructors - all experienced medics.Their wisdom was invaluable and I believeit is one of the program’s greatest assets.
For those interested in a career inparamedicine, I would recommendthoroughly investigating the job inadvance. It is one area of study thatrequires strong academic skills, excellentphysical condition and excellent peopleskills. It is a fantastic career for those whoenjoy a job that brings different challengesand surprises each and every shift.
After graduating I secured a full-timeposition with Ottawa Paramedic Serviceand a casual position with LanarkAmbulance Service. Working bothservices provides a pleasant balancebetween city and rural paramedicine.

I had been on a waiting list for thePractical Nursing Diploma program for along time in Nova Scotia, so you canimagine my excitement when I wasaccepted to Loyalist College so quickly! Ipacked up my little car with all I couldcarry and drove out to Belleville withmuch anticipation to begin my two-yearadventure in the Practical Nursing Program. That was in 2004 and it’s hard to believethat I’ve graduated and have now beenworking in the Belleville area as aRegistered Practical Nurse for over a year!
Just as any preschooler on their firstday of school, it is exciting to begin a newchapter in your life. The staff at LoyalistCollege - everyone from professors tocafeteria staff and janitors - is more thanwilling to help you in a friendly manner.Whether you are unable to find yourassigned room or just need to knowwhere the closest washroom is, everyoneis glad to help.
Loyalist may be a small collegecompared to others, but it definitely is notlacking anything because of its size. There is something for everyone and theyare dedicated to giving you the bestpossible education in your chosen field. The professors are knowledgeable andpassionate about what they are teaching.
I never once went home after a day ofclasses and thought that was a waste oftime. As a matter of fact, I made sure notto miss any days because I knew thatthere would be something interesting andimportant to learn. The nursing lab atLoyalist College is state-of-the-art andfortified our classroom learning into real-life situations. I was never afraid to askfor clarification - there was no such thingas a silly question.
Of course there were times when I feltoverwhelmed with a project or a test thatwas coming up, but by keeping my sightsfocused on the overall goal of completingthe program, I always got through it andonto the next challenge. However, thereare numerous support services available toaide you if you feel you are lagging behind.
I was fortunate to find work as aHealth Care Aide-equivalent in health caresettings while attending College. Thisexperience strengthened my nursingskills. Once I graduated, my employerchanged my title from Health Care Aide,to Registered Practical Nurse! I havesince added a second nursing job to myresume and feel so satisfied with mywork. The skills I developed at LoyalistCollege are enforced everyday. I amproud to be a Loyalist College Alumnae.

Loyalist Practical Nurses Achieve 100% Success inRegistration ExaminationsLoyalist College Practical Nursing graduates of 2007 have receivednotification that all 24 members of the class were successful in theirregistration examination. Each of these graduates ranked at or abovethe provincial average in all areas assessed. This qualifies them towork as a Registered Practical Nurse in Ontario.
“This is the second consecutive year that graduates of the PracticalNursing program have achieved a 100% success rate on theregistration examination,” said Karen Brooks-Cathcart, Dean ofHealth and Human Studies.“In addition to congratulating thegraduates on their success, I want to acknowledge the commitment offaculty and staff to providing a very high quality program. They haveall worked extremely hard to achieve this success.”
“My success in writing the examination is definitely a reflection ofhow well the faculty prepared us for it,” said Sarah Freymond.“Loyalist was a great learning environment that was extremelysupportive. In the classroom it was always evident that the professorswere teaching from their experience, and this definitely strengthenedthe program. My favourite part of the Practical Nursing program washaving the opportunity to take the knowledge that I had learned inclass and apply it in a clinical setting. I am now employed at QuinteHealthcare in North Hastings where I grew up. I’m doing what Ialways dreamed of doing.”

Interviewing and Counselling proved tobe one of my most challenging coursesand yet there is no doubt that each ofthese skills is absolutely essential in mycurrent role as a Mental HealthCounsellor. Receiving so much supportand encouragement from both LyndaCarr-Mulholland and Michael Manthorpehelped me to realize that some of mypersonal traits I had previously viewed aslimitations can actually work to opendoors with clients who appreciate asubdued, gentler approach in acounselling relationship.
Each day is unique in my job and it’sthe people I work with, both co-workersand clients, who make what I do sorewarding. It goes without saying that thisjob can be extremely stressful at timesand yet I can’t think of a more therapeuticenvironment to work in overall.
As a mom with a young child, thethought of returning to school afterhaving been out of university for eightyears was really intimidating. Despitethis, the camaraderie I soon found withmy fellow accelerated SSW studentsreminded me that I wasn’t alone in mypursuit to build a better life. Before long Ibegan to look forward to going to schooleveryday, even when I hadn’t slept muchthe night before (staying up late to dohomework after finally getting my 2 year
old to sleep), and I realized this was asure sign that things were looking upfor me.
While many of us would agree that weneed more resources in the SocialService field, the truth of the matter isthat there are only so many jobs to goaround. With this in mind, make your timeat Loyalist count and know that this isyour opportunity to stand out as the typeof individual employers desire to find. TheSSW faculty will do their best to guideand support you as you learn and grow sodon’t hesitate to share your goals andenthusiasm with them. Above all, neverunderestimate the value of networking inthis field.
My entire Loyalist experience wasmemorable, as were the people who keptme company along the way.

RECREATION ANDLEISURE SERVICES
“I liked what I was doing, and that made all the difference.”by Michael PopielRecreation and Leisure Services Co-ordinator for After School Programs and Summer Camps,City of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario
When I graduated from high school, mymarks were inconsistent from class toclass. I never did well in classes I was notinterested in. But, when I came toLoyalist, that all changed because I wasinterested in the Recreation and LeisureServices program. Although my studyhabits did not change from high school, Iliked what I was doing, and that made allthe difference. I had to work hard to do as
well as I did, but I also had lots of time tohave fun on and off campus, meetingnew people and making new friends.
I apply everything I learned at Loyalistto my job as a Coordinator for AfterSchool Programs and Summer Campswith the City of Ottawa. Whether it isplanning or running the program, I knowexactly what I am supposed to be doing. Iowe a lot to my professors who were veryknowledgeable and willing to share theirwealth of experience in the field.
The Recreation and Leisure Servicesprogram is demanding and requires acommitment of time and effort. But onceyou get that diploma, the employmentpossibilities are endless.

The Corporate and CommercialSecurity program at Loyalist Collegeprovided the foundation necessary to findthe perfect job for me. Being a maturestudent and mother, Loyalist taught methe essentials of security, investigationsand communications without all the“filler” subjects that take up the first oneor two years at other colleges anduniversities. The fast track programallowed me to finish my first year in sixmonths which caught me up to thesecond-year students.
After completing a placement withHastings & Prince Edward CountiesHealth Unit, I knew that enforcement wasmy calling. The faculty at Loyalist workedwith me each and every step to ensurethat I would be prepared to meet andexceed the expectations of any employerwho hired me. My job as a Smoke-FreeOntario Enforcement Officer is neverboring. Enforcement is something I havealways had an interest in and doing it
every day is a very rewarding experience. The field of enforcement and security is
growing rapidly. The studies are intenseand often very difficult, but the professorsare always willing to give that extra helpto get you through. Each professor hasfirst-hand life experience in the field theyteach. My law teacher was a lawyer andmy security teacher was an RCMP Officer,so their accounts were real and madelearning much more interesting.
Loyalist has provided a wonderfulmirage of memories for me. I loved tocome home each day and share myschool news with my children. They lovedto hear about my friends and help withmy homework. At Loyalist I met friendsthat I still keep in touch with, and eachtime I meet my professors they aregenuinely concerned about how I amdoing. Loyalist is a small college with adeep reputation for caring for theirstudents well after graduation.

Returning to school after 15 years inthe job force and raising a family was themost frightening yet exciting decision Ihad ever made. The first day of schoolwas just like the first day of kindergarten;I was afraid I wouldn’t fit in; I wouldn’tmake friends because I was much olderand that the workload would prove to betoo much of a challenge. I couldn’t havebeen more wrong. Loyalist students arediverse in every way including age andbackground. Loyalist teachers offered avariety of experience both in and out ofthe classroom. They nurtured my
confidence until I was sure I couldsucceed.
The Correctional Worker programoffered the opportunity to demonstratethe skills I’d learned in my two fieldplacements. I was hired by the youthfacility in which I completed my secondplacement and was working beforegraduation. I draw on my Loyalist Collegeexperience everyday and am grateful forthe knowledge I gleaned from myteachers. I am excited to go to workevery day and for the first time in my life,I feel that I am making a difference.

I have lived in the Belleville area since Iwas young. When it came time for me tochoose a college and program of study, Ifound out there are many to choose from. However, when I decided on the PoliceFoundations program, there was absolutelyno doubt in my mind what college I wasgoing to choose – Loyalist. Loyalist ishighly regarded when it comes to thePolice Foundations program because of itsfour communications courses, four fitnesscourses and two, four-week placements. The professors have real-life policeexperience. They are honest, tough whenthey need to be and will push you harderif they know you have the potential. Forthe reasons listed above, I would not havechosen any other college.

From the moment I set foot on theLoyalist Campus, I was at home. Therewas not a single person that wasn’twilling and ready to help with anything Ineeded - from guidance to finances - thehelp was there.
I was fortunate to begin my fast-pacedcareer at MacLaren McCann/CSG withGeneral Motors Canada as my client. I amchallenged daily with a variety of tasksand projects, each one as unique as thenext. This position is highly rewarding inmany ways both socially andprofessionally. With the ever-evolvingindustry constantly picking up pace, thechallenge of tight time lines, heavyproject loads and fast-paced industrykeeps me on my toes. It is a great feelingto work on a team that is constantlystriving to stay ahead of the game and
ultimately sell more of our client’sproducts.
My fondest memories of my time atLoyalist would have to be the people firstand foremost, and that includes programfaculty members, Student Government,Board of Governors and all of the greatstaff who helped me along the way. I wasvery involved in Student Government andBoard of Governors, a move that I wouldhighly recommend to anyone. There areso many reasons why this experiencewas great but simply put, you meetpeople, work with bands andentertainment, and you learn skills inaddition to your day-to-day classes.
Loyalist became a home to me over myfour years and was truly the best foundationfor a successful career in the advertisingand integrated marketing industry.

One of the best decisions I have evermade was to study Broadcast Journalismat Loyalist College. When I started Collegeat the age of seventeen, I was unsure ifthis was the right program for me. At firstI thought I had made the wrong choice, but the program opened up so manydoors for me. You don’t have to get a jobin news after you graduate. There are awide variety of opportunities available.
The Broadcast Journalism staff are thegreatest. They are very honest with you.The first day of school the teachers told usit would not be easy. They were absolutelyright, but they were there for us anytimewe needed them. I struggled through partsof the program but my teachersencouraged me to strive harder and I havethem to thank for much of my success.
My experiences at Loyalist wereamazing. I met friends I will have for the
rest of my life, and I learned that I CAN dowhatever I put my mind to. Thisspecifically shows in my work now. I’m aSummer Events Reporter at Variety 104.5and I love my job. Every day I learnsomething new, and meet someone new.It is the most challenging job I have everhad, but also the most rewarding. I growmore and more each day.
Everywhere I go in the media industry Imeet Loyalist grads. Loyalist is a topcompetitor in the media industry and theyshould be proud of that. I’m proud to putLoyalist on my resume because it hashelped me shape what I am today. Iwould tell anyone who is considering theBroadcast Journalism program at Loyalistto make sure they are ready to learn, toput in extra hours, and to work as hard asyou possibly can. Your dream job awaitsyou at the end of it all.

The Public Relations post-graduateprogram was definitely the right choicefor me. The training in media relations, key messaging, fundraising (i.e. donorrelations) and event management has allbeen very valuable in my job with ahospital foundation.
As a fundraiser, donor relations are acore responsibility and one of the bestparts of my job. The instruction in thisarea, along with the advice we receivedfrom career professionals, really helpedme to decide what field of work I wantedto pursue. Much of the program isfocused on relationship building whichhas a huge impact on any career inpublic relations.
I loved Loyalist because its size reallypromoted a feeling of belonging. Theprofessors are highly educated andexperienced in their fields of expertise, and this translates down to the students.Loyalist has a great atmosphere and thePR program is fun from start to finish. Thisreally encourages the learning process.
My advice to anyone considering thePR program is GO FOR IT! If you lovepeople, want to have fun in your job, arelooking for more than one avenue ofemployment and are brave enough to putyourself out there, then the PublicRelations program is for you. It opened upa new world for me and my fellowgraduates. It will for you too.

TELEVISION AND NEWMEDIA PRODUCTION
“Loyalist gave me the foundation I needed”by Cat NolteTelevision and New Media Production Executive Assistant/Office ManagerSons and Daughter Production Inc., Toronto, Ontario
Loyalist gave me the foundation Ineeded to work in this industry. Theinternship program was what actuallygave me my break with an amazingcommercial production company. I did mytwo-month internship at Partners FilmCompany during my third year and theyhired me three weeks into my internshipas a staff Production Assistant. I mademany contacts at that job and have nowmoved on to a new production companycalled Sons and Daughters(www.sonsanddaughters.ca), where I amthe Executive Assistant/Office Manager.
I’m gaining a great deal of experiencehere and I truly love my job, which isreally important.
I feel the greatest strength of Loyalist’sTelevision and New Media Productionprogram is the hands-on experience andthe professors who have all worked inthe industry.
Loyalist Professor Named Canadian New MediaEducator of the YearRobert Washburn, Journalism Professor at Loyalist College washonoured with the Canadian New Media Educator of the Yearaward. Professor Washburn was the first Canadian educator to bringstudents into a social networking simulation classroom in the virtualworld of Second Life, using this environment as an education tool.
