Summer is the time of year when plants grow and produce fruit and vegetables. Flowers bloom. Many children do not have school. They play outside in the hot, sunny weather. Many families vacation near oceans and lakes.

Do Plants Breathe?Humans and animals take air into their lungs. Do plants need air?

Supplies:

leafy plantpetroleum jelly

Instructions:

1. Smear petroleum jelly on both sides of several leaves. Wait a few days.2. What happens to the leaves?

What’s happening here?

Air also comes and goes through the pores on the leaves. The petroleum jelly closed up the pores, and no more air could get through. Without the air, the leaves started to die.
