Dear friends, TDT’s 2016-17 season ended on a high note with the final performance of Emerging Voices featuring new works by up-and-coming choreographers Emily Law and Alicia Grant. The program was bursting with fresh ideas and unabashed joy, and the company dancers were at the top of their game. We began the season with a very different show, a four-part concert of short works of mine, created over a thirty-three year stretch. Elsewhere in the season, we presented a re-imagined version of my full-length Chiasmata (2007), a new take on 2015’s Echo at the National Arts Centre, and Noisy, a radical new work by experimental artist Ame Henderson. The TDT performers took all of this work in stride, diving into each new challenge with intelligence and passionate physicality. The range of this past season speaks to our desire to advance the work of choreographers and performers at every stage of their development, from the most emerging to the most established. Like you, our audience, every artist needs the opportunity to take chances, expand their horizons and continue to grow in their understanding of the world. We thank you for sharing in our journey this year, and hope that we have affected yours in a positive way! Christopher House TABLE OF CONTENTS: 2017-2018 is TDT’s 50th Anniversary Season! 2017-2018 is TDT’s 50th Anniversary Season!

Toronto Heritage Danceat the Winchester Street Theatre

Founded in 1968 by visionary dancer/ choreographers Peter Randazzo, Patricia Beatty and David Earle, Toronto Dance Theatre is about to launch its 50th Anniversary season! We will take this year to celebrate our past, present and future through premieres, remounts and remixes; national and international tours; unique co-presentations; symposiums, exhibits and parties.

The season’s touring activities kick off with TDT’s first ever visit to Colombia with multiple performances in Bogotá, Medellin and Cartagena. We will be presenting House Mix, a program of works by Christopher House that includes Martingales and Vena Cava. A comprehensive Canadian tour follows early in the new year, featuring visits to eleven Canadian cities coast-to-coast and north to the Yukon.

TDT’s major Toronto presentation will be Glass Fields at the Fleck Dance Theatre, Harbourfront Centre, from March 20-24, 2018. The second project in our multi-year Reimagining Repertoire

initiative, Glass Fields begins with the remount of Glass Houses (1983) one of Christopher House’s most successful early works, followed by choreographic responses and remixes by Amanda Acorn, Jasmyn Fyffe, Christopher House, Hanna Kiel and Tedd Robinson. Glass Fields will also be presented at the National Arts Centre Theatre as part of the Canada Dance Festival in May 2018.

In December 2017, TDT offers the second iteration of its Emerging Voices Project, a creative incubator for nine emerging choreographers led by Ame Henderson and Christopher House. We will also present a second Symposium on the Potential of Repertoire in Contemporary Dance and several installments of our Studio Series for young people.

Highlights from 2016-17

Animated, TDT’s mainstage presentation at the Fleck Dance Theatre in November, featured four works by artistic director Christopher House: Martingales, Fjeld, Colder Ink and a new production of Animated Shorts. Writing in the Globe and Mail, Martha Schabas said: “Animated is a dynamically beautiful and entertaining arc through 30 years of House’s oeuvre – and then an important extract of Canadian modern dance itself.”

TDT’s dancers brought this new version of a 2007 work to life with consummate skill, resulting in a Dora Mavor Moore Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble. The first initiative in TDT’s multi-year Reimagining Repertoire project, this new production of Chiasmata reveals the potential of infusing past work with the tools– and perspectives– of the present.

Ame Henderson’s rigorous new work Noisy was filled with unexpected beauty. With seven exceptional performers simultaneously dancing and singing, the voice became one more part of the expressive body. With a Dora-nominated lighting design by Simon Rossiter, costumes by Claudia Fancello and vocal coaching by top-flight musicians Matt Smith, Robin Dann and Alex Samaras, Noisy was a unique experience.

Building on work begun in TDT’s RBC Emerging Voices Project in 2015, this program featured Mercury Dust by Emily Law and TDT HOUSE OF DREAMS by Alicia Grant, a playful double bill that delighted audiences and marked a significant success for these gifted young choreographers.
