Organization

Vocabularywordsareintroducedingroupsof10to12wordsatatime.Fouractivitiesareincludedforeachnewgroupofwords. Thefirstactivityforeachgroupofwordsinvolvesdefiningthenewwords.Beforestu-dentsbeginthisactivity,encouragethemtoreadthewordsoutloudtogether.atthisage,manystudentshavedifficultyunderstandingthepronunciationguideinadictionary.Sayingthewordshelpsthemlearnpronunciation.Studentswillneedaccesstoagooddictionaryandathesau-rus.includebothasimplepicturedictionaryaswellasonethatismoreadvanced. The second and third activities for each group offer variety to provide students withmanydifferentwaystoapproachlearningvocabulary.Theyusewordsincontext,writerhym-ingwordsandshortpoems,expressopinions,andwritesentences.Studentslearnsynonymsandantonymsforwords,differentiatebetweenhomophones,exploremultiplemeaningsforthesameword,writepresentandpasttensesofverbs,usethesingularandpluralformsofnouns,andchangeadjectivestoadverbs. Sincestandardizedtestingisanimportantcomponentofeducation,thefourthactivityforeachgroupprovidespracticeinstandardizedtest-takingformats.Thishelpsstudentsbe-comefamiliarandcomfortablewiththeformatandprovidestest-takingpractice.
