A Message From our parish priest

My most precious Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Christ is Risen! Hristos Voskrese! Христос Васкрсе!

Every time when we speak, chant or sing these beautiful words of our salvation, something unexplainable and beyond human understanding is touching our hearts and souls. The glorious song of salvation of the victory over death.

“Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and on those in the tombs bestowing life!”

This is the foundation of our faith. This is our understanding of life itself as Orthodox Christians. This small but powerful Troparion determines our very relationship with God and each other. It completes the inexpressible expression of love and the mystical bond between us and the resurrected

Christ, and frames the essence of our understanding of life itself. Please forgive me for not being able to fully express in written words all the joy that is not

from this world but stays as fire in our hearts. I know that you can read them in recognizing the same joy and anticipation that bends our hearts through these blessed days of our Pascha. The flame of Resurrection is unexplainable with human words. It can only be experienced. It’s the language of the Future that is to come. The future of our Oneness with our God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the eternal day of His Heavenly Kingdom.

I feel truly blessed that I celebrate this year’s Pascha here with you again and especially having my wife and children with me. I remember a story an older priest once told me. Someone asked him: “Father, don’t you feel lonely sometimes here (thus being away from home)?” He answered: “How can I feel alone, when I have the Church and Parishioners here with me the whole time? I can never feel lonely even if I’m at the end of the earth as long as I have my Parishioners with me. They are my extended family!” Truly he was right.

We are all family. We are all members of the Mystical Body of Christ. We are Church. Even those who physically left us but are always in our thoughts and prayers. Our beloved Branko, Anna (Nancy), Biserka (Pearl), Smilja (Mika) and all those departed from this life before I came here, are among us every Liturgy when are being mentioned during the Proskomidia service. They are still here. They live in our Church that we are responsible to take care of. They moved

3

from this physical temple to the one that is already prepared for those who set their whole life to love Christ according to their strength. May God give them blessed memory and make them inheritors of His Heavenly Kingdom.

We must never forget that when we set our life around Christ we are centralizing our existence around Him. If we have Him as our criteria in our everyday life, we’ll never be forgotten from being mentioned in His Book of the Life everlasting. We have to continue to do the best we can what the Parishioners before us where doing for their and OUR Church. They gave us in inheritance something that they inherited from our Fathers that is not from this world, and along with that the responsibility to engrave our names in the Body of Church with every, big or small help that we do for the Church according to our talents and strengths. We don’t have other churches. We don’t have other families. We have each other. We have this life to show what we can do for each other and for those who love us and hate us. We have only this life to be better Christians by loving and respecting each other and everyone around us.

My most beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, this is a very important year for all of us. This 2016, we celebrate 100th years of the existence of our Parish Church. It’s a blessed event for all of us and a special opportunity to show how we love our Church and to earn the blessing from the Living God for the endurance of our Parish in the many years to come. Let’s do this for us and for the future generations to come, so that they may remember us in their prayers. Let’s do our part of never ending singing of this blessed and joyous greeting: Christ is Risen! Indeed He is risen! Hristos Voskrese! Vaistinu Voskrese!

Through the blessing and prayers of our most Reverend Bishop Mitrophan may God give us all that is necessary for our salvation and spiritual advancement.

Let us all greet each other with this beautiful Easter greeting,Thy Resurrection, O Christ our Savior, the angels in heaven sing. Enable us on earth to glorify

Thee in purity of heart.

CHRIST IS RISEN! HRISTOS VASKRESE! ХРИСТОС ВОСКРЕСЕ!

A Message From Our President

As we approach this joyous time of the year, may we all reflect on the fact that Easter is the celebration of the Life, Death and Resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ. To me, the Easter Celebration has a strong parallel to Holy Resurrection’s history. With the sounds of children once again in the Church, and other changes that are occurring, we see signs of a re-birth in our Church. Let me say that Holy Resurrection is flowing with a renewed energy in preparing for our 100th Anniversary Celebration. Many parishioners continue to work faithfully so that this milestone in the Church’s history is observed with great pride and enthusiasm.

Father Borjan and the Church need all of us to have Holy Resurrection continue to prosper for the next 100 years. Please, come along for the ride and enjoy the changes and growth of God’s Church.

The celebration of the Resurrection of our Christ never grows old. It gives us an opportunity to examine our own lives and reflect on the wrongs that we have committed, our need to forgive and love one another, and the need to pray and thank the Lord for showing His true Love for all of us through His ultimate sacrifice.

On behalf of the Holy Resurrection of Christ Serbian Orthodox Church, I hope that this message finds you happy, peaceful, and blessed, as we celebrate God’s Greatest Gift.

House Blessings

It’s that time of year again... time to have your house blessed! House Blessings will continue after Easter. Just as it is important to sanctify ourselves by

partaking of the Holy Eucharist it is also important to sanctify the places we dwell by having our houses blessed at least once a year.

Please call Father Borjan at 717-272-8132 to schedule your house blessing.

THE PASCHAL SERMON OF ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ARCHBISHOP

OF CONSTANTINOPLE

The Catechetical Ser-mon of St. John Chrys-ostom is read during Matins of Pascha.

If any man be de-vout and love God, let him enjoy this fair and radiant triumphal feast. If any man be a wise servant, let him rejoi-cing enter into the joy of his Lord. If any have labored long in fasting, let him now receive his recompense. If any have wrought from the first hour, let him today receive his just reward.

If any have come at the third hour, let him with thankfulness keep the feast. If any have arrived at the sixth hour, let him have no misgivings; because he shall in nowise be deprived thereof. If any have delayed until the ninth hour, let him draw near, fearing nothing. If any have tarried even until the eleventh hour, let him, also, be not alarmed at his tardiness; for the Lord, who is jealous of his honor, will accept the last even as the first; he gives rest unto him who comes at the eleventh hour, even as unto him who has wrought from the first hour.

And he shows mercy upon the last, and cares for the first; and to the one he gives, and upon the other he bestows gifts. And he both accepts the deeds, and welcomes the intention, and honors the acts and praises the offering. Wherefore, enter you all into the joy of your Lord; and receive your reward, both the first, and likewise the second. You rich and poor together, hold high festival. You sober and you heedless, honor the day. Rejoice today, both you who have fasted and you who have disregarded the fast. The table is full-laden; feast ye all sumptuously. The calf is fatted; let no one go hungry away.

Enjoy ye all the feast of faith: Receive ye all the riches of loving-kindness. let no one bewail

33

his poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed. Let no one weep for his iniquities, for pardon has shown forth from the grave. Let no one fear death, for the Savior’s death has set us free. He that was held prisoner of it has annihilated it. By descending into Hell, He made Hell captive. He embittered it when it tasted of His flesh. And Isaiah, foretelling this, did cry: Hell, said he, was embittered, when it encountered Thee in the lower regions. It was embit-tered, for it was abolished. It was embittered, for it was mocked. It was embittered, for it was slain. It was embittered, for it was overthrown. It was embittered, for it was fettered in chains. It took a body, and met God face to face. It took earth, and encountered Heaven. It took that which was seen, and fell upon the unseen.

O Death, where is your sting? O Hell, where is your victory? Christ is risen, and you are over-thrown. Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen. Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice. Christ is risen, and life reigns. Christ is risen, and not one dead remains in the grave. For Christ, being risen from the dead, is become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Him be glory and dominion unto ages of ages. Amen.

About St. John Chrysostom:

St. John Chrysostom (“The Golden Tongue”) was born at Antioch in about the year 347 into the family of a military-commander, spent his early years study-ing under the finest philosophers and rhetoricians and was ordained a deacon in the year 381 by the bishop of Antioch Saint Meletios. In 386 St. John was ordained a priest by the bishop of Antioch, Flavian.

Over time, his fame as a holy preacher grew, and in the year 397 with the demise of Archbishop Nektarios of Constantinople—successor to Sainted Gregory the Theologian—Saint John Chrysostom was summoned from Antioch for to be the new Archbishop of Constan-tinople.

Exiled in 404 and after a long illness because of the exile, he was transferred to Pitius in Abkhazia where he received the Holy Eucharist, and said, “Glory to God for everything!”, falling asleep in the Lord on 14 September 407.

The Date of Pascha

The time of the Great Lent is dependent on the date of Pascha, which varies from year to year. According to a Canon of the First Ecumenical Council (Nicea 325), Holy Pascha is the first Sunday after the first Full Moon which falls upon or immediately after the Spring Equinox (ac-cording to ancient reckoning March 21). In addition, this Council decreed that Pascha cannot precede or fall on the Jewish Passover (14th day of the Month Nissan). The Full Moon used for the purposes of calculating the date of Pascha is the fourteenth day of a Lunar Month reck-oned according to an ancient ecclesiastical computation and is not the actual astronomical Full Moon.

The number of days between each Full Moon (the Lunar Month) is not exact according to the Solar Calendar and ancient calendars added or subtracted a period called an epact to har-monize the Lunar and Solar Calendars. These epacts as calculated by the Orthodox Church, vary from those calculated by the Western Churches. In addition, the Western Churches do not follow the Nicean Council’s decree that Pascha must not precede or fall on the Jewish Pass-over, and it is for these reasons that there is often a great variance from one year to the next between the Orthodox Church and the Western Churches concerning the date of Holy Pascha.
