Bits and Pieces with JoannOur Guild has something for everyone! I am just amazed at all the activities you can become involved in that contribute to Surfside Quilters Guild’s continuing vitality.

With the November Fest coming soon, committees are forming to organize the basket raffle, ticket sales, food preparation, and auction of beautiful quilts. Let Chairman Sharon Whelan know what you would like to do at [email protected]. Every bit of help is welcome.        Our Philanthropy Committee offers a great opportunity to sew projects both together and at home with their baby blanket and bib kits you can pick up at the Guild meetings.

The response of members for the Wounded Warrior quilts is truly awesome...we are making simple patriotic blocks at home that turn into wonderful quilts given with love for our injured soldiers in Afghanistan.

Whether it's bringing something for the Hospitality table, taking a workshop, supporting the Monthly Mini Raffle, joining a Friendship group, or attending the Guild meetings, we know our lives are enriched with these opportunities to help others, learn something new, and make new friends. Thank you for all your support for our Guild.

September Workshop with Bev Remillard: Autumn Stars WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 10 AM TO 4 PM - $30.00 (KITS PRICED SEPARATELY)FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 34381 CALLE PORTOLA, CAPISTRANO BEACH 92624

We are all very excited to have Bev Remillard here for our Workshop. This Autumn Stars Quilt (right) is 68 ½” square but it can be made in a smaller

version (left). It uses small quantities and the look is fabulous! You can use charm packs in any color combination you like. Try using lights and medium colors to make sure that the pattern shows through clearly. We have the choice of either project for this Workshop. She has five kits available for the large quilt at $64.00 and ten kits for the smaller project for $20.00 each. To see Bev’s beautiful website, go to www.ladylikedesigns.com.

October Workshop with Leora Raikin: Safari Through African Folklore Embroidery (Beginner)

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 10 AM TO 4 PM - $35.00 (KITS ARE $30.00.)FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 34381 CALLE PORTOLA, CAPISTRANO BEACH 92624

Leora Raikin’s workshop is an introduction to stitching and needle art. African Folklore Embroidery is quickly growing to become one of the most popular cultural and artistic classes available. Leora encourages her students to “think out of the box,” to let their imaginations run wild and to imagine that their needles are paintbrushes and the thread is the paint. The extreme contrasts of brightly-colored threads against the black fabric make any completed design both striking and beautiful.

You will be able to choose from ten different 12 inch kit designs which include needle, threads and beads. Other items will be provided in the workshop. All you need to bring is your scissors. This will be a fun and very exciting workshop.

November FestMark your calendars! November Fest, our Guild's annual major fundraiser, is taking place on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. The Fest is quickly approaching and we need your help with the following donations of time, talent and treasure.

1. Newer fabrics, quilting supplies and quilting books

2. New or gently used baskets that can be filled with donated quilting items

3. Gift cards to your favorite quilt shops, restaurants, coffee bars, nail salons, you name it!

4. Themed baskets put together on your own, with friends, or with your Friendship group

5. Wall hangings and quilts for the Live Auction

6. "Adopt-a-Shop" - See Maggie Bell's article (right, above) explaining this program.

7. Volunteer - "Many hands make light work" so we each have time to enjoy ourselves at November Fest. See Kathie Bellamy’s article (right, below) for more details.

At the September 13th general meeting, LeAnn Goettel will talk to the Guild about the

Hospitality menu and request volunteers to make food items and/or assist in the kitchen on the morning of November Fest.  Volunteering is a great way to meet other members of the Guild.

Please email me or call me if you have any questions regarding November Fest donations. Thank you!

Sharon Whelan, Ways & Means Committee - November Fest Coordinator - [email protected] - 949-493-3516 (home) - 714-612-3775 (cell)

Volunteers NeededOur November Fest is the one and only Surfside Quilters Guild fundraising event of the year. We need each and every member to help out in some way to make it a success. You may be able to donate quilts or arrange baskets. But even if that’s not your cup of tea, there are many other ways to participate. Giving of yourself and your time is the most valuable gift.

We will need volunteers prior to the Fest to fill baskets at the "Wrap House" in Laguna Niguel, transport filled baskets from the "Wrap House" the day before and deliver them to the Church in the morning. You might also help set up, sell tickets, monitor the baskets during the Fest and, of course, clean up.

If you can help, please contact: Kathie Bellamy, Volunteer Coordinator - [email protected] - 949-439-2205

Adopt A Shop! The November Fest Committee is looking for quilters who like to visit quilt shops and would be willing to deliver letters asking for donations for our Annual Fundraiser. We are encouraging shops to donate a basket of wonderful items, such as fabric, quilting supplies, books, and gift certificates. Those who sign up to Adopt A Shop will be given a sheet of information and procedures. Copies of the request letter and donation sheet will be made available via e-mail. Volunteers will also be responsible for picking up the basket from the shop before the Fest by the October 11, 2011 meeting.

Please check out the Fest area at the September Guild meeting to see what shops need "adopting." With many of us helping out, the work load will be lighter for all. Let's work together to make our November Fest a success as we fund our programs, workshops, and philanthropic endeavors.

Star Watching...It takes many volunteers to make a strong and vital Guild. They make an extra effort to make things enjoyable for all. With great appreciation we’d like to thank these special “can do” people.

★Thanks to Nancy Burch for quilting many Wounded Warrior quilts on her longarm machine, plus quilting two quilts donated to the November Fest auction.

★Special thanks to Del Thomas for her wonderful photography at our meetings for the newsletter and directory. Del has also been sending in news about current Southland happenings.

★Thanks to Mary Freedman for the generous use of her spacious sewing room for Philanthropy workshops and Wounded Warrior quilt planning.

★A huge thank you to Marjie Butterworth who not only sets up our lunches at Carbonara’s after the meetings, but arranges our meeting chair and table set up with the Church…and always with a smile.

Stashbusters Workshop For PhilanthropyTHURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 9:30 AM - 2:00 PM - 864 AVE. ACAPULCO, SAN CLEMENTE

Many times it is the children who need our help the most and Stashbusters is proud of our commitment to them. We are making fun baby quilts and bibs for the San Clemente Presbyterian Church’s semi-annual baby shower for Marine families of the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion based at Camp Pendleton. We are also sewing small quilts for preschoolers for Kids Konnected, a charity that “provides friendship, understanding, education and support for kids who have a parent with cancer.” Don’t just think about reducing your stash of bright or juvenile fabrics, make a quilt at home. Then drop it off at the Philanthropy table at the next Guild meeting. A 36”x 36” or 45”x 45” quilt is the perfect size for babies and small children. The Philanthropy table is also the place to pick up a bib pattern, an easy pattern for a small quilt, or a complete kit.   Join us at our next meeting. Our Friendship salad is always a surprise. We provide the lettuce and salad dressing, you provide the other ingredients. Bring your sewing machine, notions and your energy. Please mark your tools. Several items have been misplaced in recent months. Stay for the day or an hour or two, you’ll be glad you came.

Wounded Warrior Special Committee Our Wounded Warrior Quilt Project is up and running at full pace! Twelve beautiful quilts have been mailed to the combat hospitals in Afghanistan. We now have six more completed and even more in the making. Thank you so much for the blocks that were turned in at the last Guild meeting. If you have blocks from the star kits please bring them to the September meeting.

For the next block we are making Nancy Burch’s Red, Light & Blue Warrior Quilt that features 9-inch half square triangles using a light fabric (cream or white) and a dark fabric (red or blue). Remember to only use cottons and fabric prints that are non gender specific. These half square triangles will be made into quilts with diagonal stripes (see below).

Thanks so much for your generosity and support for this project. Those who sleep under a quilt, sleep under a blanket of love.

Monthly MiniSeptember’s Monthly Mini was originally donated to Philanthropy as a pieced top. Members of the Philanthropy Committee looked it over and discussed whether to put borders on it or leave it the way it was. Everyone agreed that

it was lovely just the way it was. Mary Freedman volunteered to put on the backing fabric and hand quilt it. We’re taking the liberty of naming it “Lovely Lavender.”

AND THE WINNER IS...PENNY SOLDINAugust’s Monthly Mini was won by Penny Soldin (below, right). It was donated by Maggie Bell. Surfside collected $125 in ticket sales.

Philanthropy - Part 2THANK YOU FROM THE REHABILITATION INSTITUTE OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IN SAN CLEMENTE

Dear Mary (Gorelick),

Thank you and the Surfside Quilt Guild for the beautifully crafted adult aprons.  They are SO VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. The only problem was when the staff saw them, they said they could use them when serving lunch to the participants. A “grab frenzy” occurred. Fortunately, there was enough to go around for all needed. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness and time spent making these aprons.

Regards, Alicia Fiore

Opportunity QuiltThe North Cities Quilt Guild is having a Quilt Show on September 30 and October 1 at Placentia Presbyterian Church, 849 Bradford, Placentia. This lovely redwork quilt will be on display at the September Guild meeting and the drawing for it will be October 1. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.(See Southern California Quilt Events on page 12.)

Introducing...Sue ButskoSue first began quilting when she was living in Hawaii, while her husband, a US Marine, was serving in Vietnam. Her first quilting class was taken at the University of Hawaii. Initially, she thought Hawaiian applique was too tedious, but she has since discovered that she loves the soothing process of hand appliqueing and hand quilting; she finds it relaxing, and she has completed many wall hangings in that style. She is partial to scrap quilts in the traditional style, and her favorite color is red, so most of Sue’s quilts reflect this. Currently, she is stretching her creativity to get out of her color comfort zone. Interesting to note, Sue was the Inaugural President of Beach Cities Quilters Guild in 1993.

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Sue married a US Marine following graduation from the University of Delaware. She

and her husband moved many times in 20 years and traveled the world along the way. While having the very interesting and unusual experience of living in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for seven years, Sue started an international quilt guild there. It only had 35 members, but as far as she knows, it is still active. During their time in Saudi Arabia, they traveled to 45 countries. Prior to that, they lived in Okinawa, Norway, and Denmark.

Sue enjoys daily walks and continues to love traveling. She enjoys weekly golf games with her husband and looks forward to their annual golf vacations in Hawaii. They have two sons and eight grandchildren living locally and a large pet turtle, Scruffy, for whom Sue made a green batik quilt. Lastly, she is part of a prayer-quilt ministry at her church. Together they tie quilts while they pray, so the recipient knows that each knot represents a prayer for them.

HospitalityThank you to everyone who brought in a plate for our Hospitality table. As usual, it was brimming with a wonderful selection from home baked cakes and fresh fruits to open faced sandwiches.  We invite everyone whose birthday is in September to celebrate your “special month” by bringing your favorite snack for the Guild. Of course, everyone else is certainly welcome to add a plate of tasty treats, too. Just remember to

BLOCK OF THE MONTH

Calendar of Houses UpdateSince we are doing Calendar of Houses, September was a natural for a schoolhouse. The directions, found on the next page, are as easy as they come and you have the option of being as playful as you wish.

When you see some of the samples we’ve put together on our back table you won’t be able to resist jumping in. It’s definitely not too late to get started. Ask us about extra theme fabric we’d like share with you.

Quilts of the Wild WestQuilt Inspirations, a wonderful blogspot we’ve mentioned before is currently highlighting a “free and fabulous quilt block-of-the-month by Molly Fryer” called Boot Bash. It’s a quilt with 12 different cowboy boots that are very imaginative and fun.

http://quiltinspiration.blogspot.com/

Molly has her own blogsite “It’s Molly’s Place” that’s a must-see also, especially if you’re a cowgirl at heart.

The Surfside Quilters Guild, a 501(c)(3) corporation, was established in March of 2009 to promote quilting and other fiber arts in the South Orange County area. The Guild offers quilters the opportunity to share experiences and enhance their knowledge and skill in an atmosphere of fellowship. Newsletters are distributed through the Internet. Dues are $30.00 annually for the membership year of May 1 through April 30. Guests are always welcome for a donation of $5.00. Membership and Volunteer Forms are available on the SQG website: http://www.surfsidequiltersguild.org/Home.aspx.

Magazine RecycleBring in your gently used magazines about quilting, sewing and related topics that you no longer want to keep. They will be sold to benefit the Surfside Quilters Guild to help pay for expenses. Then pick up your favorites to take home, four for $1.00...and sometimes there are interesting specials, too.
