senior school

It has been a very exciting week in the Senior School! For those who saw Avenue Q, l am sure you will

agree with me that it was a wonderfully enjoyable production. For our talented students to be able to act, sing and be a puppeteer all at the same time was inspirational. Congratulations to the students, and also to the staff for their tireless work over the last 6 months: Michael Harrop as Director, Hannah Blenkhorn as Assistant Director and Sarah Barlow as Musical Director. They should be very proud of the cast and crew. A further thanks goes to the technical team of

John Morrell and students Will Hodge – Media and Louis Edwards – Lighting. I saw it twice and would happily go back a third time. I will have to wait till it comes back to Melbourne!! A couple of weeks ago we celebrated the School’s first win in BAS swimming since 1989. This week our Girls Open A and B Tennis broke a significant drought by winning the BAS Premierships. Both teams played Ballarat Grammar. Furthermore our rowers with the male crews at the Scotch Mercantile Regatta at Nagambie and the females at the Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta in Geelong also posted some

significant wins. I wish our 4 crews heading to Sydney for the National Rowing Championships this week,

the very best of good fortune there. This week we have been raising awareness and funds for the San Filippo Foundation. Senior Accounting and Economics Teacher, Mark Robson’s daughter has this rare disease. Mark spoke passionately about Skye’s condition at last week’s assembly. The school has got right behind the cause this week and one

does not have to look too hard to see a touch of purple. Another end of term is upon us. Term 2 begins with Student/Parent /Teacher interviews and details are now online regarding bookings. At the end of the first week of Term 2 we hold our annual Year 12 Formal in the David J Sewell Pavilion. The theme this year is: First letter of first name. As always it will be a lot of fun.

Have a happy and safe holiday everyone and thankyou for your support during Term 1.

9/10

One of the highlights over the past fortnight was our Leaders’ Assembly. We would like to congratulate all the 9/10 Leaders (please refer to the list below). Kate Lyons, one of our 9/10 Leaders was asked at the assembly to reflect on what leadership meant to her. She addressed a number of issues, but the most enduring for us was that leadership was about one’s behaviours rather than one’s position. She mentioned that it involved behaviours that were in the public eye, but also involved simple behaviours (such as picking up a piece of paper off the ground) when no one was there watching you. For Kate,

being a leader was all about actions, and trying to make the best decisions about those actions in all situations. We think Kate is correct and we challenge each of our 9/10 Leaders to embrace their leadership role and all the behaviours, large and small, seen and unseen, that this entails. Whilst our Year 10 students have been busily planning for their Melbourne Experience that departed this week, the Year 9s have had the opportunity to engage in some student wellbeing sessions. One of these involved two staff members, Caitlin Pohl and Emily Hehir, sharing their travel experiences, to Africa and

the Middle East respectively. They focussed on their observations of the social challenges that these

areas face and the social differences they experience when compared to us. Both talks were well received and in a follow-up session in House, students were asked to consider the following questions and use them as a basis for discussion: What did we learn about connectedness from the speakers? What were the main messages that you took from the presentations and what does this mean to the way

that you live your life? What are the similarities and differences between how the people described live their lives and the way that we live ours? What obligations do we have as human beings living in a global community? How did the speakers change the way you think and what did they say to make you change? Are there some things that are the right of all humans and what responsibility do we have to make sure

that all humans have access to these rights? Are our problems trivial in the face of the suffering of others?

What does tolerance mean in our community? How important is equality and how often do we take this for granted? The goal of these types of sessions is to try to involve our students in thinking about some of the big issues that face our world and what role we play in dealing with these issues. At the very least we hope

we can provoke some thinking about world events and world cultures so that our students can have some idea of their context and place in the global community. We hope to have more sessions along these lines in the future. We would like to thank all the 9/10 students for their efforts over the past term and we hope that they have a relaxing, enjoyable and safe holiday.

We will leave you now with a few reminders: All immunisations cards are now well past due. If you would like your child immunised and your child has

not submitted a card, please have them do so by the end of term. Student/Parent/Teacher interviews will be conducted on the first two days of Term 2. Bookings should be made this week.

As mentioned in notifications last week, Year 9s will receive their Term 1 report in week 2 of Term 2, before students depart for King Island. Year 10 grades and MOLs will be available at the end of Term 1. The Year 10 Melbourne Experience departed Monday this week. Students will return on Thursday when they will present to their peers at school and then be able to be collected from 3.20pm.

middle school SPELLING As we near the end of the first term of 2015 it is a good time to pause and think a little about spelling.

Why is spelling important? Spelling has an important role to play in both reading and writing. Learning to spell cements the connection between sounds (phonemes) and collections of letters (graphemes). When learning to read, students move from sounding out the words to recognising whole words and then recognising and applying spelling generalisations. As students recognise the patterns in spelling they are faster at word recognition and are able to make more meaning of what they read. Therefore spelling and reading comprehension are strongly related.

The primary purpose of our writing is to communicate ideas, opinions and thoughts. Spelling helps to ease this communication through making words clearly identifiable to the reader. As an added benefit,

when students are fluent speller they require less focus on the spelling of words as they write, leaving more working memory available to consider the ideas and structure of their writing. What are our strategies?

At College we begin our teaching of spelling using systematic phonics, where students link sounds with the letters that represent those sounds. As students become more familiar with sounding out words and recognising whole words we can introduce spelling generalisations. Almost 85% of words fit the generalisations and so these patterns are useful for students as they develop their spelling. Finally, for words that have foreign derivations or do not fit the pattern, students can memorise whole words.

What can be done at home? This week we will email home a spelling word list. It contains frequently used words that are categorised by how frequently they are used. We ask our students to study these lists over the holiday break. Some strategies for using these words are:

Words of the day – place several of the words, with their meanings, up somewhere prominent

(fridge, lounge-room wall etc). Students can practise the words during the day.

Testing from the list – one person reads out a word from the list and the student needs to spell it.

If the spelling is incorrect, spell it correctly and then rewrite several times. Repeat the incorrectly

spelt word later in that testing session and then again the next day.

Cover and check – students can work on the words themselves by recording themselves reading

a series of words (perhaps on a mobile device) and then replaying the list while trying to spell the

words. They might repeat this a number of times.

WALKATHON This Friday we are holding a Walkathon to raise money and awareness for the wonderful work of Ballarat Hospice. At 1.20pm students will walk around the school block, decked out in dashes of purple and yellow. Students will arrive in school uniform as normal before changing into their walking gear.

Regional Swimming

Friday the 13th was certainly not a bad day for our swimmers who made it through to the regional championships earlier this month. The regionals were held at the Eureka pool for the first time, which gave many parents a great opportunity to support their children and cheer loudly from pool-side. What an excellent day it was for our Primary aged swimmers! Our largest ever regional squad of 26 students did the school proud with a dominating performance. 10 children represented the school as individual students, 4 of whom won their races to advance. Fred Valpied’s effort in slashing several

seconds of his entry time to win his breaststroke was a highlight. Another excellent effort was Ben Locke’s second place by a fingernail in the 10YO butterfly, only to find that the race had to be re-run due to a timing error. (He still secured a silver medal). Paige Livingston (back), Juliette Parlange (back) and

Ben Grima (fly and free) won their races with beautiful, smooth style. Our strength was clearly demonstrated in the relay section at the end of the day. We began with the 12YO boys freestyle relay team (the mean team), who made it 3 years in a row through to States with a

great all round performance. Things were looking tight until Ben Grima pulled away easily in the last leg. Next, our 12YO girls swum wonderfully and changed smoothly, taking several seconds of their entry time to snatch a thrilling bronze medal. Our 11YO boys then fought hard for a 6th place, with 2 swimmers being under age. Next the 11YO girls won through for the 2nd time, with a new look team who couldn’t wipe the smile from their faces. The 10YO boy’s freestyle team then kept up the winning streak, where the team was ahead from start to finish, eventually winning by almost half the pool. In the last of the freestyle relays this fete was then repeated by the 10YO girls, who all looked sensational and powerful for

their age. The program ended with our 12YO boys’ team stepping up again to win the open medley relay and our

open girls’ team narrowly missing out on the bronze medal, despite a great last leg by Isabella Chalmers. The State finals will be held at MSAC in Melbourne on Wednesday 15 April and our largest ever contingent of 16 swimmers will be there to represent the school with distinction. It has been a real

pleasure to coach and supervise our swimmers and competition squads this term. It is not only their talent, but also their dedication, team orientation and sportsmanship that make them shine where ever they go. Junior School PE Department Return to menu

Ada Sayasane to compete on the international stage Ada Sayasane (Year 9) will travel to Wellington, New Zealand to compete in the Alana Haines Australasia Awards during the holidays. Ada is a dedicated dance student who has attended the Anita Coutts School of Dance Vocational Training Program for the past four years. The Alana Haines Australasia Awards were created after Promising 'Honours' student Alana Haines was tragically killed in a car accident. Every two years since 1991, the AHA Awards has provided young ballet dancers a 'Career Platform' to compete on an international level for cash awards & international

scholarships. The event spans over four days with months of preparation. Competitors attend special masterclasses and then present a classical variation solo along with a contrasting contemporary or modern solo. The prize pool for this competition totals over $300,000 in cash awards and the most

prestigious international training scholarships from around the world. In 2015, over 400 dancers will compete at the Wellington Opera House. Good Luck Ada. We look forward to hearing about your experience.

performance in July or August at the National Theatre in St Kilda. Since 2011, the Locredado Dance Program has been enriching young dancers Australia wide with the opportunity to confidently perform within a dance company. Congratulations on an amazing achievement Kasey. Sarah Perkins named as finalist for Victorian Young Achiever of the Year.

Old Collegian Sarah Perkins has been named as a finalist in the Victorian Young Achiever of the Year awards. Sarah, who is currently dancing with the Queensland Ballet Senior Program, has been invited to

the Presentation Gala at Etihad Stadium in recognition of her achievement. Here she will be acknowledged by Channel 7’s Jaqui Felgate and Jenny Mikakos, the Minister for Youth Affairs Middle School dance classes There was a definite buzz within the Middle School dance classes as the students completed their Musical Theatre group pieces. The task required the students to create their own musical or adapt an existing one, with the students responsible for generating personalised scripts, choreography, costumes, music

edits and so on. Below are some photos from our Year 5 class, who were not only entertaining in their renditions of High School Musical, The Wizard of Oz and Frozen, but did an outstanding job in organising costumes. Click here for photos

Drama Avenue Q – over 600 people came to see this production and with good coverage in the Courier, it was a great showcase for our young cast. Reception the Musical – visited our school as part of the VCE prescribe plays. Many of our surrounding schools were invited to attend and it was great to see the community come together. Many of the

outlying schools appreciated the invite. The Wedding Singer – the musical – is currently rehearsing with a cast of 50 senior school students. High School Musical – Auditions have started and will be completed next term.

Cut Snake – another VCE prescribed play. 30 students went to St Kilda Theatreworks to see this

fantastic production. VCE Drama – Students are developing their ensemble pieces to be performed to an open audience in week four.

visual arts On Wednesday 18 March, Ginelle Polanske and I attended the opening of StArt Up: Top Arts 2015 at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Now in its twenty-first year, Top Arts celebrates exceptional work by some of Victoria’s most creative VCE Art and Studio Arts students. This year forty-two students from government, Catholic and independent schools across regional and metropolitan Victoria were selected to exhibit their work, from thousands of applicants. It is a real honour to be selected for the exhibition. The exhibition includes a series of digital photographs on opaque synthetic polymer from one of our

students from 2014, Eliza Bussell, who completed the work in Studio Arts, under the tutelage of Ginelle Polanske (in Term 1) and Vicki Gerardi. Eliza has just started a degree in Communication Design at RMIT.

“What we see through a digital camera after capturing a picture of light is different to what our eyes perceive. We document a split second of its movement from one place to another, and it’s fascinating seeing something we otherwise would not see. Without light we could not have colour, and the ability to

see colour is often taken for granted, let alone the ability to distinguish each individual colour”, Eliza explains. The Year 11 and 12 Art students will be visiting the exhibition next term and will also view the student folios that document the design and art-making process from initial ideas to realisation. The art works and folios reveal the depth of enquiry undertaken by VCE students and the diversity of their insight into

the creative process. The exhibition is free and is on at the Ian Potter Centre at the National Gallery of Victoria from 19 March to 28 June.

what has proven to be an increasingly popular event. Literacy and English are of the highest priority at Clarendon and, this year, we have made participation in the Challenge compulsory for all students in Year 5 and 6 and optional, although strongly encouraged, for students in Years 7 and 8.

To participate in the Challenge a consent form must be completed to enable the provision and collection of

information by schools and the Department of Education & Early Childhood Development. Please download the required consent form from the Middle School page on connect@clarendon and ask your child to return the completed form to the library or their learning mentor by Friday 1 May. Your child will be given a login so their reading can be recorded on the Challenge website, if your child has participated in previous years their login should be the same and they can start recording their books now via the website. They can also

use the website to search for books included on the Challenge list, check on their reading progress and rate the books they’ve read. Go to http://www.education.vic.gov.au/prc and click on the ‘Students tab’ on the left of screen.

To complete the Challenge your child must read the following number of books by August 31 2015. This is the minimum requirement. They can enter up to a maximum of 100 books on the website.

Year level Number of books Number from the Challenge book list

Year 5 15 books 10 or more

Year 6 15 books 10 or more

Social Function In a break with tradition we decided this year to hold our social function in first term as a way of welcoming new families to the school community. A very successful night was held last Friday in the David J Sewell Pavilion. Many new, near new and old faces enjoyed a great night out. The food was delicious and conversation animated

A special thanks must go to Michelle Hill for all the work she did in organising this event. There is a lot that happens behind the scenes to ensure these events run smoothly and we appreciate Michelle’s efforts to this end. Thanks also to Neil at Café College and Tony Campana for the great food and wine. Student/Parent/Teacher Interviews The SPT interviews are scheduled for the first 2 days back after the holidays – Monday 13 April and Tuesday 14 April. Once again the P&F will host this event by providing tea and coffee and assisting

parents to find rooms and/or teachers etc. We are looking for volunteers to help out if even for 1 hour.

All are welcome, friends, relatives and acquaintances, as we need 60 people each week for 6 weeks to fill our Tuesday night session. If you did not fill in the form at the dinner and wish to help raise funds to assist your child in the rowing

program I can be contacted on 0438 553 268 for further details. This week is the National Titles at Penrith in Sydney and the 1920 Club wish all the crews well in their races. Have a safe and a well-deserved break over Easter and start preparing for rowing in Term 4.

Ballarat Clarendon College Launches Campus Virtual Tour Ballarat Clarendon College has partnered with internationally renowned company YouVisit, to build a complete walking tour of the school, giving unlimited access to the College grounds.

Students, as well as their families and friends can now explore all three campuses at their convenience via the College website. In place of, or in addition to a live campus visit, the tour also allows visitors to take further action to inquire or register for a place. The Registrar and Marketing Manager, Denis Moneghetti said, “In line with the College’s philosophy, a tour of the highest quality will provide families with a convenient, flexible and informative insight into the facilities at the Mair Street, Sturt Street and King Island Campuses. It has been an exciting collaboration

and we are looking forward to providing potential families with another avenue to assist them in their

choice of education.”

One of the tour commentators, Ruby Drummond, explains some of the finer details to Head of the Senior School, David Parker.

Visitors can access the tour on our website at www.clarendon.vic.edu.au
