Week 3 of 2015 is upon us and this week will conclude on Friday with the House Athletics Sports. NB We will still have the 4 periods on the day but only for 50 minutes each. The sports will run from 1–5pm The same arrangements for the Swimming Sports at Eureka pool will take place the following week

(Friday 20 February). We will provide transport for all to the Pool but only for Boarders on the return. Day students should be collected from the pool at 5pm. David Parker Head of Senior School New York San Francisco 2015 Report - Riley McGoldrick

So the first time I heard about NYSF was when my Biology teacher suggested it to me and said that he

thought it would be a great experience for me. Now, I was very apprehensive about it, I thought it was just some small thing that nobody really did and it was because of this I debated going or not going till the day before applications were due and it was then I decided to at least apply. I applied thinking two things: one, I loved science; and two, that this trip would look great on my resume. I think it was when I arrived at the Melbourne interviews that I realised that this trip was more than ‘a couple of nerds going to Canberra’, and, over the course of the months following my acceptance, my excitement grew and it

was after the orientation that I knew I had made the right choice to apply. The actual session was one of the best experiences of my life. By the time the bus had arrived in Canberra I had already made a group of friends who got me. By the time the bus arrived I had realised I had been so wrong in putting off this trip and I was prepared to have a great 2 weeks. Whilst I loved every single part of it, with the only low point being the day I had to say goodbye, I have to talk about

some of my favourites. My favourite Lab visit was one to which we visited the School of Psychology, and, having a burning passion for psychology, being chosen to have my brain activity measured via EEG was

so fantastic; words can’t begin to describe my happiness on that visit. Whilst that lab visit is something I will never forget, that comes second to my favourite part of the trip- the people. There was something quite liberating about walking into the Burgmann Dining Hall and being able to sit on any table; with anyone and not have to worry about feeling out of place. The friends that I have made and the people I have met will always be a part of me; I have learned so much and gained so

many valuable connections that I feel closer to these people I have lived with for 12 days than I do to my school friends. At this forum, not only was a surrounded these people, but we were also working with people who are doing some ground-breaking research in their fields. From meeting professors whom are studying and searching for a cure to malaria, to video conferencing the CERN Super Hadron Collider, all these people have left me with a steadfast resolve- that science is what I want to dedicate the rest of my life to.

Finally, I would like to thank a few people. The first of which is my Biology teacher Mr Ben Naughton, for without him I would not have even known about this life-changing experience. I’d also like to thank my

Rotary Club, The Rotary Club of Melton Valley, who have been extremely supportive and kind. Thank you to the Rotary district 9800 for being so kind and also my Home Hospitality family, who couldn’t have been nicer. And finally I’d like to give the biggest thanks I can to everybody that was a part of Session C. From the Staffies, to the greatest interest group ever Doherty, I cannot thank you enough for being a

part of the greatest time of my life. Thank you. Click here for photos Return to menu

9/10 What a terrific start to the school year our Year 9 and 10 students have made. There has been the usual buzz of excitement that a new year brings and we have been impressed with the way in which our students have leaped straight into the business of learning. We have a number of new students joining us this year in both the boarding and day schools. We wish

them and their families a warm welcome. We would also like to welcome a number of new staff working in Year 9 and 10 this year. Included among these are some new House Teachers. Ben Hay has joined us from Sydney and will be working with Year 9 Henderson and Kennedy students. Alexandra Knell has journeyed from Melbourne and will be working with Year 9 Cairns and Garbutt students. One big question that we will be posing to all Year 9 and 10 students this year is: How do you fit into and

contribute to your community? The King Island and Melbourne experiences are fundamentally vehicles through which we hope students can develop, not only a sense of who they are, but also how their

contributions to their communities contribute to the welfare of our society as a whole. We will encourage them to understand the big issues, but also to think locally and to support those within their immediate communities. It is with this in mind that we will be challenging all Year 9 and 10 students to identify and propose courses of action in terms of helping their own communities. Over the course of the year we hope that parents can also engage in conversations with their children about their future and the role

they hope to play in their communities. Another hope of ours this year is to ensure that we celebrate the achievements of our students, both within the school and in the broader community. If, during the course of the year, your child achieves something that you think should be celebrated, please let us know. Such recognition can be affirming for the students involved and an inspiration to others. For example, over past weeks a number of students have had some wonderful success in their chosen sports.

Alyssa Britten and Kate Lyons competed in the 2015 Under 15's National Futsal Championships in Sydney

over the summer holidays. Their team ultimately went on to win in their category. As a result of their performances at the Nationals, both girls were invited to be part of the Australian Futsal Team to tour Brazil later this year. Congratulations girls, what a terrific reward for all your hard work! Equally noteworthy are the achievements of Jesse Bartlett who had some wonderful news being selected for the

National Under 15 soccer squad. We congratulate Jesse and again it is wonderful to see when the hard work of training and playing is so well rewarded. The coming weeks see a number of school events occurring including the House Swimming and Athletics Carnivals, and the House Performing Arts Competition. These events provide those who excel in these areas an opportunity to shine, but perhaps more importantly, they are an opportunity for those who find them challenging, to push beyond their comfort levels to support their individual Houses - their sub-

school communities. Parents are welcome to attend any of these events. Finally, we take this opportunity to encourage parents to contact the school if during the course of the year any issue of concern arises regarding your child. Our mission is to help each student develop

optimally, and this of course can only be achieved if we all, student, parents and school, work collectively as one.

middle school Things have started well in the Middle School as the students have quickly settled into their daily routines. Most students have figured out how to efficiently open their combination locks, they know where their classes are and they’ve quickly aligned themselves with the routines and expectations of each

of their teachers. We had great fun last week during the House Tug O’ War. Each year level enjoyed the opening event of the year and the much anticipated final between the Year 8s will be held in our next assembly. Last Thursday our curriculum information evening was well attended by parents. It provided us with the opportunity to share what is addressed in each of the subject areas as well as answer any specific

questions parents had. We appreciated the strong numbers in attendance. This year the Middle School camps will be held at different times to last year. The Year 5 and 6 students

head off to Anglesea in the first week of Term 2. The Year 8s make their trip to King Island in three different groups across Week 6, 7 and 8 of this term. The information evening will be held tonight (Monday) in the Sewell Pavilion for any families wanting to learn more. The Year 7 camp is not until late Term 4 so we will hold another information evening for them closer to that time. We have seven of our

Year 8 students looking forward to their opportunity to go to Thailand later this term as part of our annual school exchange. This Friday we’re all excited about the Middle School Swimming Carnival. We are heading to Eureka Pool for what should be a great afternoon. Things will get underway just after 1pm and should conclude around 5pm. We’ll bus the students there but we’re asking parents to collect their children directly from

Eureka at 5pm. We’ve made a few changes this year: firstly, the move to Eureka has been designed to increase participation by running more events across a range of distances. Secondly, this year we’ve run trials during PE lessons. This has meant the PE staff have selected the teams with the aim of making the events as even as possible so all have the opportunity for some success. The events in athletics carnival, which will be held at school the following Friday, have also been selected in this way.

The role of the Learning Mentor is an incredibly important one for any Middle Schooler. The Learning

Mentor oversees their students’ program by monitoring progress at a range of levels. Further to this, they are the first point of contact for parents. Learning Mentors are calling families across the first three weeks of term to share their observations. Parent/Teacher interviews with the Learning Mentors will be held in Week 5 on Friday 27 February in the David J Sewell Pavilion. Each interview will run for 10 minutes and presents parents with the opportunity to talk with the person at school who knows their child best.

Dance Congratulations Kate Douglas Kate Douglas (Current Year 12 student) has been selected to perform her composition VCE dance solo in the upcoming Top Class performance which is part of the VCE season of Excellence 2015. Students who

received an A+ for their solo pieces in the 2014 performance examination were invited to audition for the

Top Class performance in late January. From this audition the VCAA selected the top 20 solo pieces across the state as outstanding examples of how students created solos which fulfil the set criteria required in performance examinations. Our current senior dance students are most excited to support Kate when we attend the Top Class performance on Thursday 19 February. Click here for photo

Ella Graham receives dance internship In December, Ella Graham (Year 9) applied for a dance internship in Mumbai, India with The School of Classical Ballet and Western Dance. Following a performance and interview, she was offered a place for the November/December 2015 intake. Whilst there she will attend daily classes at the school and also take classes with the two professional companies, Shiamak and The Danceworx. As well as this, she will also be assisting with choreography and Cecchetti classes and performing in the Gala performance at the

conclusion of her time with the school. We wish Ella all the best in her adventures. Click here for photo Dance Aerobics teams For the first time, Ballarat Clarendon College will be entering the Nationwide ‘Schoolaerobics’ competition. Schoolaerobics combines dance skills with high intensity physical aerobics routines and allows for another

performance opportunity for our Year 9 – 12 students to share their talents with the wider community. This competition is in its 26th year and sees more than 940 schools enter and compete each season for the National title. We had anticipated entering one team in our first year, however due to such an overwhelming response from students, we will now be entering 4 teams and 33 students in the state heats in Geelong on Sunday 17 May. All teams are busy preparing and rehearsing the routines and are looking forward to this fantastic experience.

Assembly and Novice Band at the Junior School Welcome Picnic Middle School Choir and Years 5 and 6 Music Classroom We are excited to announce a new initiative for the Music Classroom program. The Year 5 and 6 Music classroom program will incorporate weekly choir rehearsals in class time and will collaborate with vocal and other interested students in Years 7 and 8 for a short rehearsal period before three main concerts

throughout the year. Vocal skills are fundamental to the whole music curriculum. It provides a basis for performance and

theory, and singing in a choir builds ensemble skills, including physical, academic and social. This new program will also give skills for future music studies. Welcome new staff

We welcome Years 3-6 classroom teacher and Junior Contemporary Ensemble Leader, Christine Schuler and Drum teacher Jessica DeVries. It’s great to have new staff join our team to bring new ideas and their experience to ensembles and classrooms. Senior Choir We are excited to have Dani Fry continuing to direct our Senior Choir, amongst her very busy new schedule operating Sutton’s House of Music. She will be supported by Geoffrey Williams, one of our vocal

teachers. Geoffrey is a consummate performer, songwriter, choir director and teacher and the choir members will glean much from his skill and passion. Please note that choir will run on two days from 1-2 through the cycle: Days 1 and 8.

Michelle Green Head of Visual Arts Next Gen Exhibition at Ballarat Gallery On Friday evening the 6th of February I had the pleasure of attending the Next Gen exhibition opening at

the Art Gallery of Ballarat; I was one of about 200 teachers, students, family, friends and gallery members. This year is a landmark for the gallery’s VCE exhibition, in that it celebrates its 20th year. This

exhibition which began in 1995 (originally named after the late Len Brookman) continues to exhibit outstanding art work completed by VCE students in their final year of study. In 2015, the Next Gen exhibition features 67 artists from 17 local and regional schools. The work is featured in the Ian Potter Foundation Gallery, and was curated by Education officers, Pauline Doran and Michael Nichols. The Next Gen exhibition was opened by local member Sharon Knight and she spoke very admirably about the quality of the student art work and the generous contribution the Art Gallery of

Ballarat makes to the community, in supporting such an event. This exhibition is open for free viewing to the public until the 22nd of March. Ballarat Clarendon College was represented by Isabel Burgess (Studio Art) and Madeleine Kemp (Art). The gallery received over 200 applications and so it is a privilege and an honour that our students were

chosen to exhibit. I very much enjoyed chatting to Isabel and her family and it was a thrill to see her

“What’s Wrong” photograph (based on the mental illness, obsessive compulsive disorder) hanging in this prestigious space. Maddie Kemp’s beautiful oil painting skills are justifiably displayed and both girls should be congratulated on their efforts. Vicki Gerardi Art Teacher

health centre Three big changes to the vaccine program

In 2015 three major changes to the vaccine program will impact on parents of secondary school

students:

1. Ballarat City Council’s immunisation service may contact you about the secondary school vaccine

program. Schools have been authorised to provide parent contact details to local councils for this

purpose. Contact the school on 03 53308200 by 28 February 2015 if you do not want your

contact details given to Ballarat City Council.

2. In 2015 only, the vaccine that protects against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough will be

offered to all students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. From 2016, this vaccine will be offered to Year 7

students only. This will provide earlier protection from these diseases.

3. The time-limited human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program for Year 9 boys was completed in

December 2014. HPV vaccine will continue to be offered to all students (both male and female) in

Year 7 from 2015.

Look out for the vaccine consent form/s coming home from school with your child. You need to read,

complete and return the form/s regardless of whether your child is being immunised at school.

To learn more about the changes, the diseases, the vaccines, or how you can prepare your child for

vaccination go to immunehero.health.vic.gov.au

LOTE Tokyo Grill House 2014 At the end of last year, Year 8 Japanese students travelled to Tokyo Grill House for a culinary experience.

Tokyo Grill House serves teppanyaki style Japanese food. We enjoyed five courses of delicious Japanese cuisine. We began our meal with a traditional miso soup and a fresh salad with an original Japanese dressing. Our main course consisted of teriyaki chicken, Waygu beef and vegetables cooked in garlic and butter. For dessert we were served green tea ice cream. One of the great things about dining at Tokyo grill house was that the food was cooked in-front of us. It was interesting to see how the food was cooked and the ingredients used. It was very impressive to see the skilful chefs prepare our meals. We developed our knowledge of Japanese culture by learning Japanese table manners, how to hold

chopsticks and how to serve food and drink. Upon arrival at the restaurant it was clear that most people were unfamiliar with how to use chopsticks.

With some help from our teachers, while not totally adept, we did manage to eat our meal with these traditional Japanese utensils. Overall, this was an amazing experience that we wish to have again. If you feel like a taste of Japan we highly recommend Tokyo Grill House.
