Canoe Trip 2017 - “Entrance to the Wilderness” "Entrance to the Wilderness," - that's exactly what Nopiming means in the Anishinabe language. The entrance road leads to miles of shield country, which is scattered with hundreds of crystal clear lakes that are rimmed by granite rock and sheltered by stands of black spruce, birch and poplar. Take to the waterways which have carried canoes since the time of the voyageurs and the Aboriginal peoples. Now the only residents of the area are moose, bear, woodland caribou and bald eagles. Discover why anglers have made this park a tradition - they were first lured by the northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, and then drawn back time and time again by the wilds of Nopiming.
(Excerpt from Nopiming Provincial Park Website)
A. Nopiming Provincial Park - Directions From Winnipeg we will take the perimeter going North to Hwy 59. We will continue on Hwy 59 North and turn East on Hwy 317. Go north on Hwy 11 to Lac du Bonnet. At Lac du Bonnet take Hwy 313 east to Hwy 315. Go north on Hwy 315 to park entrance. Once in park take Hwy 314 to trailhead. There is a clearly marked ‘Seagrim Lake Canoe Route’ sign on Hwy 314. The parking lot is adjacent to Hwy 314.
B. Transportation We will be traveling to the canoe route staging area with four vehicles. One vehicle will be a 5 passenger Jeep that will carry our gear and pull a canoe trailer. The second, will be a 5 passenger truck that will be pulling a divisional canoe trailer. The other two vehicles will be 7 passenger mini-vans. The two vans will be rented from Eastern Chrysler and driven by the teachers.
C. Route Description
A computer-generated map of the Seagrim Lake area has been included. Please refer to the maps when reviewing the route description. The staging area is located directly adjacent to Hwy 314. The decision on where to camp will depend on factors such as weather, time, and group morale. We may use either camp A or B, as they are the most accessible with a large group. Camp A and B are approximately 3 km. from the parking lot and should take approximately 2-3 hours to reach them. On Day 2 we will do a day trip from camps A or B to Elton Lake for the afternoon. We will return to base camp for dinner on Day 2. On Day 3 we will re-trace our Day 1 path back towards the parking lot.
