What is a standard?

• A standard is a document that provides requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose– Standards are for anything you can think of– Standards are man-made.

Organizations for standards

• You may be asking “What's a standardization organization in Computing then?”– It’s an organization that focuses on providing

documents that require specific computing guidelines– E.g. ISO

– Since computer science or broader computing field is man-made, therefore, standards are important to people to understand each other.

The Standard Organization Complex• There are many organizations

that have the same goal but do not meet eye to eye so they make new organizations.• Essentially every organization

has the same function• There is a bunch of

organizations• Standards may

overlap as well.

IEEE

• IEEE is the world's largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community through IEEE's highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities.

ECMA

• cma has been involved in the development of the concept of "fast tracking" in ISO/IEC JTC 1 and - since its introduction in 1986 - it has been one of the main practitioners of it.

• Ecma is driven by industry to meet the needs of industry, generating a healthy competitive landscape based on differentiation of products and services, rather than technology models, generating confidence among vendors and users of new technology.

ANSI

• As the voice of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) empowers its members and constituents to strengthen the U.S. marketplace position in the global economy while helping to assure the safety and health of consumers and the protection of the environment.

Advantages of Web Standards• To Software:

– Complying with web standards can give your web pages greater visibility in web searches. The structural information present in compliant documents makes it easy for search engines to access and evaluate the information in those documents, and they get indexed more accurately.

• To People:– Not only does this mean allowing the web to be used by people

with disabilities, but also allowing web pages to be understood by people using browsers other than the usual ones – including voice browsers that read web pages aloud to people with sight impairments, Braille browsers that translate text into Braille, hand-held browsers with very little monitor space, teletext displays, and other unusual output devices.

Standards Vs. Regulation

• A regulation is a legal norm intended to shape conduct that is a byproduct of imperfection.

• A Standard is different because it is not legal– (refer to the definition of standard) What is a

standard?

– Organizations do setup both standards and regulations.
