KEVIN CARTEE, CAAIADA President

Red Bud High School

On behalf of the board of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association I send you greetings and well wishes. It is my hope that your school year has been a successful and rewarding one. Soon, winter activities will be coming to a conclusion and the beginning of spring will be upon us. Thank you for all you do.

In December, the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association held its annual conference in Phoenix, Arizona. The venue was very accommodating, hospitable, and warm. The opportunities to grow professionally were impressive, as many topics, workshops, classes, speakers, and sessions were available. Just as impressive was the large number of representatives from Illinois that were present. A special moment at the conference was the induction of John Van Fleet into the NIAAA Hall of Fame for his hard work, passion, and dedication to the professional development of athletic administrators in Illinois and the nation. Congratulations John on this outstanding and much deserved honor.

In November, I sent a letter to each athletic director and

principal in Illinois citing the advantages of the IADA and to renew or consider becoming a new member. I was encouraged to hear from several individuals that responded to me regarding the letter and how they can become a member. It is not too late to join the IADA. If you have questions about how to become a member of the IADA, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. If you are a current member of the IADA, reach out to those individuals that may need some more information and tell them of the benefits of our organization.

Lastly, the IADA will host its annual state conference on May 4-7 in East Peoria at the Embassy Suites Hotel. Another outstanding conference is being planned full of learning opportunities, recognition, collegiality, and professional growth. Not only consider becoming a member, but also attending the conference designed for you, the athletic administrator.

In closing, it has been an absolute privilege and honor serving you and the Illinois Athletic Directors Association this past year as president. Every aspect of this position and being on the IADA board has been amazing. Thank you to all of you that has helped me along the way. Good Luck on the rest of your school year, and I will see you in East Peoria.

MIKE MORRIS, CMAAExecutive Director

Dear Athletic Administrators,I hope you had an enjoyable Holiday Season and have returned

to work after the winter break with your batteries recharged, ready to push through until we see spring like weather.

One of the main goals of Illinois Athletic Directors Association is to further the professional development of our members; to that end, we had several of our IADA members at the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators National Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee. The Illinois Athletic Directors were well represented with Matt Hensley (Mahomet-Seymour) serving on the NIAAA Publication Committee, Becky Moran (Argo Community) as the Chair of the Credentials Committee and Doug Smith (Retired - Naperville North) and Washington Bush (Retired – Conant), Tina Woolard (Grayslake North) all were presenters of LTI courses. Representing Illinois on the NIAAA Delegate Assembly were Kevin Cartee (Red Bud), John Catalano (Glenbrook North), John Woods (Champaign Central), Charlie Lockenour (Heyworth) and myself.

We are planning for our 2018 Illinois Athletic Directors Association’s State Conference to be held at Embassy Suites in East Peoria, Illinois, May 4 – May 7. Hopefully, during the

IADA Conference, you will be able to, learn new concepts, renew old friendships, develop new friendships, and be able to return to your communities with an even brighter outlook regarding the field of athletics. I know the Conference Committee will put together an exciting program with outstanding general session speakers, a myriad of mini session topics, a host of NIAAA Leadership Training courses, as well as an outstanding vendor show, and of course, a great banquet to honor and recognize our Athletic Directors of the Year, Assistant Athletic Director of the Year, Retiring Athletic Directors/Administrative Assistants, Friends of Athletics, and our Hall of Fame inductees for 2018. If there is anything that we can do for you, please contact, President – Kevin Cartee (Red Bud). Past-President - Charlie Lockenour (Heyworth), President-Elect – John Catalano (Glenbrook North), or myself and we will be glad to assist you.

We hope to see you at the 2018 IADA Conference!!!

Sincerely,

Mike Morris, CMAA

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S LETTER1. We tried that before2. Our place is different3. It costs too much4. That's beyond our responsibility5. We're all too busy to do that6. That's not my job7. It's too radical a change8. We don't have the time9. Not enough help10. That will make other equipment obsolete11. Let's make a research test of it first12. Our place is too small for it13. Not practical for our people14. The men will never buy it15. The union will scream16. We've never done it before17. It's against our general policy18. Runs up our overhead19. We don't have the authority20. Let's get back to reality21. That's too ivory tower22. That's not our problem

23. Why change it – it's still...24. I don't like the idea25. You're right, but...26. You're two years ahead of your time27. We are not ready for that28. We don't have the money, equipment, room, or personnel29. It isn't in the budget30. Can't teach an old dog new tricks31. Good thought, but impractical32. Let's hold it in abeyance33. Let's give it one more thought34. Top management would never go for it35. Let's put it in writing36. We'll be the laughing stock37. Not that again38. We'd lose money in the long run39. Where did you dig that one up?40. We did all right without it41. That's what we can expect from staff42. It's never been tried before

43. Let's shelve it for the time being44. Let's form a committee45. Has anyone else ever tried it?46. Customers won't like it47. I don't see connection48. It won't work here49. SAM KNOX, CAAAssistant Executive Director, IHSA

I hope your new year is off to a great start. As the IHSA staff prepares for our winter sports postseason

tournaments, it’s important to highlight the by-law amendment proposals that our member schools recently considered for approval.

The Legislative Commission discussed this year’s 28 proposals at length during its second commission meeting on November 20 and ultimately voted to place six proposals on the ballot. Five of the six proposals earned a majority of the votes and will alter the IHSA by-laws beginning in the 2018-19 school year.

Four of the amended by-laws could cause ADs and coaches to consider changes or additions to their sports schedules.

A total of 609 out of 811 member schools (75.1%) participated in the voting process this year. This was the third-highest percentage in 21 years of record keeping and reflects an increase from last year’s participation (72.6%).

The numbers below indicate the votes each proposal received. (yes – no – no opinion)

Eligibility regarding a Legislative Waiver from the State of Illinois: Grants eligibility to a student who has received a Legislative Waiver, who lives in a unit district with only one high school, and whose parent is on the faculty of any school in the district, which could be an elementary school, middle school, junior high school, or the high school. The current by-law states that the parent must be on the faculty at the high school.

This by-law goes into effect 30 days after passage. (approved 428-138-41)Baseball and Softball Tournaments over Spring Break: Allows a baseball or softball team to play more than 5 contests during a tournament if the tournament takes place during that school’s spring break. The season limit is still 35 total games.

(approved 435-147-24)Boys and Girls Basketball Schedules: Changes the contest limit in basketball to 31 total games exclusive of the IHSA state series and removes the limit on the number of tournaments for the team and individuals. The current limit is a combination of games and tournaments. With the by-law change, basketball teams will still be limited to a maximum of 5 games in any one tournament.

(approved 384-201-22)Boys and Girls Bowling Schedules: Increases the contest limit in bowling from 20 dates to 25 dates exclusive of the IHSA state

series.(approved 243-154-208)

Boys and Girls Volleyball Schedules: Changes the contest limit in volleyball to 35 matches exclusive of the IHSA state series and removes the limit on the number of tournaments for the team and individuals. The current limit is a combination of matches and tournaments. With the by-law change, volleyball teams will still be limited to a maximum of 5 matches in any one tournament.

(approved 379-204-25)A sixth proposal that would have reduced the number of

summer contact days from 25 to 20 was not approved. (292-305-10)

In October of 2017, the IHSA board of directors authorized the IHSA staff to form an Ad Hoc Committee to study the following topics: • Theclassificationsystemweuseinallsportsandactivities • Themethodbywhichnon-boundariedschoolsreceive

waivers to the 1.65 multiplier • Themethodbywhichnon-boundariedschoolsareadjusted

up or down as a result of the Success FactorThis 16-member committee will meet for the first time in

January to discuss these issues and could potentially recommend changes to Policy 17 in the IHSA handbook.

Thanks for all you do to ensure a positive experience for your students, staff, coaches, and community members.

As always, please contact the IHSA office with questions at any time.

Best wishes to your teams throughout the remainder of the winter sports season.

ANDREW LAMBERTLake Zurich High School

Contributors: Mark Ribbens, Wauconda H.S.& John Woods, Champaign Central H.S.

As a high school athletic administrator, we are not afforded much time for personal/professional growth. Whether it is scheduling events, evaluating coaches, supervising an event or the hundreds of other things you are responsible for, this leaves little room for professional development and growth opportunities. One of the keys to having a successful career as a high school athletic director is access to professional development. The role of an AD is ever changing and to be able to keep up and adapt to this environment, it is important to stay on top of current trends and best practices.

As I was supervising a boys basketball game one evening, I was scrolling through twitter and I happened to come across a twitter chat on small college athletics. I began to scroll through the chat and noticed the great insight many of the athletic directors and assistant AD’s had to say about the job they perform at their school. The ideas and conversations were very insightful and it got me to thinking about this type of professional development for high school AD’s. I began to search Twitter for something similar for myself and the role I am in and was unable to find anything. That night on my way home, I contact Mark Ribbens who at the time was the AD at Larkin High School in Elgin, Illinois and asked him if he would be interested in starting up a weekly twitter chat for high school AD’s. He eagerly agreed and we both felt it was important to include John Woods from Champaign Central High School in Champaign, Illinois as he is a long time standing AD and a pioneer in the business.

In the weeks that followed, we began a discussion on how our chats would be structured, topics we would cover, the day and time we would host the chat and how we were going to market this

new idea. We all believed the Twitter platform to be a priceless tool for professional growth for current AD’s and anyone who aspires to sit in the chair, plus it is free and can be done from the comforts of home! The chat provides individuals the opportunity to share ideas and to learn from one another on the things they are doing in their schools to better help you do your job. The chat also provides the opportunity to network with AD’s from around the country who you may only see if you get the opportunity to attend national conferences.

The importance of this chat for high school athletic directors is to be able to connect with colleagues, discuss similar topics that we all face on a daily basis and the ability to grab new ideas for our own school, ideas that have been put to the test by other high school athletic administrators. The open dialogue that occurs each week offers professional development for the busy AD. When you start your journey as an athletic administrator you get plenty of advice, and one piece that I always remember is when you meet a veteran AD, they say, any questions, just call. This chat allows for that question and answer session to happen each week, and for younger AD’s, this experience is priceless.

To participate in the chat merely plug the hashtag #hsadchat into the search box in Twitter and hop on in the conversation. The chat lasts one hour and athletic administrators from around the country add insight, ask questions and connect with one another.

It is important to remember that as athletic directors, we need to model the behavior we want our coaches to live by and continual growth must be a priority. Please join us on the first Sunday night of each month at 8:00 CST for our chat. If you are interested in being a guest host, please feel free to contact Mark, John or myself and we will get your started.

RICH PIATCHEKIADA Retired AD Liaison

John Trieber: Retired 3 years ago after 13 years as the Athletic Director at Glenbard South High School. John obviously sucked at retirement and has been working the last 3 years as an interim Athletic Director at Riverside Brookfield High School, sharing the job with former Willowbrook High School Athletic Director Tom Domin. This will be his last year at RB, as they posted the position for a full time AD in October. John looks forward to truly retiring and spending more time with his wife Cindy, traveling down to Tampa to visit his oldest son Trent and his parents in Redington Shores, FL. John’s youngest son Hunter transferred to Mizzou this year and is a sophomore majoring in Accounting. John still get his baseball fix by running travel tournaments for Game Day USA in the summer and will try to attend more games of the 2020 World Series Champion White Sox!

Ken Schreiner: Obviously no one knows how retirement will be until they pull the trigger, and Ken was the same way. He points out that “there’s no way to ‘practice’ it”. When he retired, he had been the Athletic Director and head football coach, and as other AD’s, was used to 60 hour work weeks. Ken’s wife was probably more nervous than him. She was concerned about how was it going to be having a type AA person at home! Well, Ken says “it’s been great”. In addition to family stuff with kids and grandkids, Ken work several days a week harassing people at a nearby golf course which allows me to see old friends, former colleagues, etc. that he wouldn’t otherwise see. He even sees former players from other conference schools with whom we competed. Retirement also has given Ken and his bride travel opportunities that they never had before. They try to do something significant each fall. They have gotten off big ship cruises and have fallen in love with river cruising with Viking. Winter finds them snowbirding in

Destin, FL for 10 weeks. Ken loves the great golf, beach walking, and just reading and relaxing. Before retirement he would hear from other retirees how busy they now are, and he thought “yeah right”. Now he knows they’re right, except now he is busier doing more things of my own choice.

Craig Watson: After moving to the Main Office as an Assistant Principal from the position of Athletic Director (12 years) at Oswego High School in 2006, Craig retired in 2013. Craig’s wife, Melody, who had taught junior high math for 32 years, retired the same year. What a blessing! This enabled them to do a lot of traveling. They were also blessed with 2 grandsons in 2014. Craig points out that being a grandparent is "indescribable" and they take care of the boys 3 days a week during the school year. Craig’s son opened a Farmers Insurance office 5 years ago and they work together quite well. After being a high school administrator for 19 years, being an "employee" is something that he thoroughly enjoys. He has reconnected with 2 of his college roommates, also former educators, and they play golf a couple of times a week. Melody and he bought a home in Osage Beach, MO, on the Lake of the Ozarks quite a few years ago and they spend a lot of time there with family and friends. Boating has long been a family event for both of them and it continues to be that way for them, their children, and grandchildren.

Bob Swanson: Retired five years ago after 14 years as Athletic Director at Rock Island High School. Bob and his wife, Debbi, still live in Rock Island and frequently attend high school games. They travel quite a bit cruising the Caribbean every other year and attending Spring Training the opposite years in the Phoenix area. Between playing golf, fishing in Canada, and attending Rotary meetings Bob stays busy. Any spare time is spent with their four grandchildren - two live in Rock Island and two in Normal, Illinois.

ANDY LUTZENKIRCHEN, CAA

Naperville Central High School

As the athletic director at Naperville Central the past six years, I have heard several times when looking for a football game that we would love to play you, but we need to find a game we can win, or we are going to wait and see if another option becomes available. The emphasis has become the “drive for five” wins to become playoff eligible and I believe it has played a large part in all the conference shuffling and re-aligning over the past several years. Our conference, the DuPage Valley, alone has seen its members change four times in the past six years with the latest change leaving it a conference of five schools beginning with the 2018-19 school year. We have seen several playoff proposals over the years to help stop all the conference changes and not one has made it to the ballet for a vote. Recently I have also come to find that the playoff issue is also affecting schools and conferences across the state, not just the schools in the Chicago area. So what is the answer, do we leave the 8 class system the way it is or is it time to try something different, to change the system?

I have been on the football advisory committee the past two years and at our meeting this past December Sam Knox, IHSA associate director overseeing football, informed the committee that the IHSA board of directors would like a survey to go out to all of the football playing schools to get a feel of what schools are thinking, what’s important and what they would like to see happen with the playoffs. During our meeting we discussed several past and the most recent playoff proposals and how a change might affect the football landscape across the state. All of the committee members agreed that something needs to change and that the survey was a step in the right direction. Some of the questions we discussed to go to schools were; how important is it that all

schools make the playoffs? Should an 0-8 school qualify? If all schools don’t qualify, what is an acceptable number to make the playoffs in each class, 32, 48, or 56? Should strength of schedule carry more weight than wins and losses towards 5?

I would argue that there are schools that finish the season 4-5 or 3-6 that could compete and win a round or two in the playoffs against teams that play a more favorable schedule. The committee did agree that 512 schools making the playoffs wasn’t a good idea and that could also lead to some first round lopsided games. Speaking for myself, I like the 56 team bracket with the top 8 seeds getting a buy in the first round of the playoffs. The other 48 teams would be considered a “play-in” game, however it would guarantee a majority of schools would be “making the playoffs”. In fact we looked at what the cut off for wins would be and a small hand-full of teams would make it in with one win. The fall 2016 season saw Naperville Central finish at 4-5 and we were in every game, I felt we could have still made a run in the playoffs if only we had a chance. How many other coaches and programs across the state have this thought?

We need to try something different and if it doesn’t work then at least we tried. One of the greatest benefits of playoff football is what it does for school spirit! It’s a chance for our players, fans and communities to go see schools we don’t compete against that often, if ever. Just this past fall two programs rich in playoff tradition, Naperville Central and Maine South, matched up in the quarterfinals and it’s the first time our programs met on the gridiron! It was a great atmosphere for players and fans. At the end of the game all in attendance had witnessed a great high school football game. I believe that is what high school sports are all about and playoff expansion will help give this experience to more of our athletes, students, and communities.

The Drive for Five, Is it Time for a Change to the System?
