This Student Handbook has been prepared to informyou of the various aspects of studying with our trainingorganisation and your course. Please read thishandbook thoroughly so you are aware of your rightsand responsibilities as a student and understand theAxial Training’s policies and procedures.

So, you may be wondering who we are?Axial is a recognised leader in vocational educationand training in Queensland. We have been deliveringa wide range of Nationally Recognised Trainingcourses since 1998. All our teaching staff are highly qualified and will support you throughout your studies using industry focused training and world-classstudent resources.

• Courses suitable for full-fee paying students,apprentices and trainees as well as full-time, part-time or flexible delivery options.

• Ensure that all students undertake an appropriateorientation programme

• Provide the opportunity for students to participatein services designed to assist in meeting courserequirements.

Axial are committed to helping you be successfulin your chosen course. If you are facing certainchallenges such as disabilities, literacy and numeracyor any other personal difficulties or you have atemporary disability due to an accident, medicalcondition or illness talk to your SSO.

Tertiary Transport ConcessionInformationStudents attending one of Axial’s campus basedcourses may be eligible for a public transport tertiaryconcession sticker. Please discuss the eligibilitycriteria with your SSO during enrolment.

Language, literacy and numeracyPlease advise Axial prior to or during your enrolmentprocess if you feel that you may require assistancewith literacy, numeracy or you have any learningdifficulties. In doing so, we can discuss ways that we may be able to support you with tailored learningstrategies, individual adjustment to assessmentsand tests, additional learning support or adaptivetechnology.

If you are experiencing difficulties with your learning, you should talk to your trainer. Your trainer willlisten to you, assess your situation and then decideon an appropriate course of action, which could be to refer your case to an Axial staff member who will beresponsible for arranging additional support. Thestaff member will then contact you directly.

How do I change my details?It is up to you to advise Axial of your new details ifyou change your details or move. You can do thisby telling your trainer or calling our administrationdepartment on (07) 3340 9999. If you don’t do this,important letters or information may be sent to thewrong address.

At Axial you can rest assured that all ourstudents have certain rights which are respected andadhered to by our staff. You also have responsibilities,which Axial staff will expect you to fulfill.

What are my rights as a student?• To receive quality training and/or teaching that is in

line with current industry practice• To be provided with sufficient learning resources

and materials that will support your learning• To be dealt with in a respectful and courteous

manner by all Axial staff and other students• To be informed about course content and

• To receive timely feedback on your course progress• To have opportunities where you can evaluate the

• Arrive at classroom sessions or workplace trainingsessions on time

• To be prepared and have all resources readybefore class or training session

• Wear appropriate, non offensive clothing for the workplace or course including closed in shoesand any PPE requirements

• No hats, sunglasses, thongs or singlets are to beworn in class.

• Treat other students and staff with respect.This includes using professional and courteouslanguage at all times.

• Not be under the influence of drugs, alcohol orother substance as you will be asked to leave thesession and/or the premises

• Notify your SSO by 8:30am on the day of thetraining with an explanation if you cannot attenda scheduled class. Absences from scheduledclassroom delivery will require a medical certificate

• Notify your trainer if you cannot attend a scheduledworkplace training visit

• Notify Axial if you change your name, address orphone number after enrolment

• Pay any charges as they become due. If this isnot possible it is your responsibility to contact ourDebtors department to discuss the matter andcome to an agreement regarding date of payment.The contact details are as follows: Axial Debtors(07) 3387 4400 or [email protected]

• Turn off your mobile phone before any training andassessment or entry into classrooms unless priorarrangements have been made with the trainer orperson in charge. If you have a situation whereyou feel you need to keep your phone on, discussthis with your trainer before class or training

• When attending classes at Axial you must signthe attendance register on arrival and departureand have your Axial student ID card at all times

• Smoke only in designated smoking areas andto respect your learning environment by placingpersonal litter and cigarette butts in the bins andashtrays provided

• Follow direction from Axial staff in the event ofany emergencies and to adhere to all safetyprocedures.

Hospitality students only• Expected dress for class is black trousers or skirts

and black top.• Black closed in shoes are preferred• Clothing is to be clean and pressed.• Students are to wear Axial issued aprons for all

practical learning sessions.

• Pay attention to personal hygiene including clean

nails, hair off face and tied back where appropriate.

What about Axial’s staff rights and obligations?All Axial staff and trainers have the right to:

• Be treated fairly and with respect by students andother colleagues

• Work in an environment free of harassment anddiscrimination.

Our responsibilities as Axial staff and trainersare to:• Be fair and equitable and to treat you with respect

and courtesy• Supply relevant training resources and support for

you to complete your training• Promote a safe environment where all students

are aware of their rights and responsibilities• Not disclose your personal or performance details

to unauthorised people• Maintain current industry knowledge and

qualifications to provide quality training andservices

• To review courses to ensure they meet currentindustry standards.

What about your Workplace Health andSafety policy?Our policy confirms that the management of Axialis committed to providing a workplace that is safeand healthy. Axial will work together with all relevantemployees and key stakeholders in workplace healthand safety matters.

What are Axial Training’s Workplace Health andSafety responsibilities?• To maintain a safe environment for staff, students

and clients on Axial premises• To assess the safety of other locations before

conducting training or assessment including atyour worksite

• To take action immediately to correct any unsafecondition which arises

• To ensure everyone is trained and activelyparticipates in workplace health and safety issues

• To continually monitor and review its workplacehealth and safety control measures.

Do students have any responsibilities forWorkplace Health and Safety?Yes, you definitely have obligations under theWorkplace Health and Safety (WH&S) Act 2011, thismeans that you:• Must not act in a manner, which may endanger the

health and safety of yourself or any other personwhile at work or at a course/training being run byAxial Training

• Must carry out safety directions given by Axial staffand/or other appropriate persons

• Must co-operate with any reasonable policy orprocedure

• Must report any issue you are aware of to yourtrainer or Axial staff member.

Students who do not comply with these legalrequirements are in breach of the WH&S Act 2011and can be fined plus you could also be in breachof the student expectations and can face disciplinaryaction from Axial.

What is Axial Training’s access, equityand diversity policy?Axial recognises that many factors influence theability of people to participate and succeed invocational education, training and employment. Wehave developed an access, equity and diversitypolicy to ensure that equity principles for all peopleare implemented through the fair allocation ofresources and the right to access opportunity withoutdiscrimination within areas under our control.To achieve these aims Axial will:• Ensure the requirements of individual learners

are accounted for in the strategic and operationalplanning processes

• Provide learners with the opportunity to be involvedin the planning and decision making processes onmatters that affect them

• Provide training programs and services that areaccessible to all people in an environment that isfree from harassment

• Provide opportunities for people to achieveoutcomes that meet their personal goals

• Provide development to facilitators who delivercourses to under-represented groups.

Please note: Some courses may have entryrequirements or subjects that may be difficult forsome students. These standards are determined bythe National Training Packages. In these instancesAxial will support the student to explore their options.

What do I do if I experiencediscrimination or sexual harassment?Axial does not tolerate any form of discrimination orsexual harassment. We at Axial believe that everyonehas the right to be treated fairly and feel safe in anenvironment free of intimidation and harassment.Under the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act andthe Federal Sex Discrimination Act, discriminationand sexual harassment is against the law.

Axial management and supervisors are responsibleto ensure that all people on site (including studentsand visitors) are treated fairly and are not subjectto harassment. They will also ensure that peoplewho make complaints or witness incidents are notvictimised in any way.

Do not ignore discrimination or sexual harassment,thinking it will go away – often it will just get worseand your silence may give the impression thatdiscrimination or sexual harassment is acceptable.

If you are sexually harassed or discriminated against,or you witness the incident, please let Axial knowimmediately.

What steps can you take?• If you do not feel comfortable speaking to the

person involved please talk to your trainer, SSO orany other Axial Training staff member

Assessment informationHow will I be assessed?At Axial we use competency-based assessments,which mean that you will have to prove that you areusing your skills and knowledge to perform yourdaily tasks and duties correctly in the workplace orfor classroom delivery, through simulation and theorybased assessments. We will aim to provide youwith assessments which are valid, reliable, flexibleand fair. When we issue you with your certificate,it will mean that you have proven your knowledgeand skills in each subject area in accordance withacademic and industry standards.

You should be able to complete your assessmentsfree from distractions or interruptions from yoursupervisors, trainers and other students, exceptwhere the trainer is sharing information that is todo with the assessment.include: Written assessments Verbal questioning

Your assessment could

Practical demonstrations Observations Role-plays Case studies Project work

Your assessment will be assessed as satisfactory orunsatisfactory.

If the assessment is unsatisfactory your trainer willgive you feedback on what areas need more work.You will then be given the opportunity to resubmityour assessment by either correcting the assessmentor redoing it as directed by your trainer.

The amount of time you will have to resubmit willdepend on the size of the corrections and the deliverymodel. For small changes or in a short course youmay need to fix the assessment immediately. In aclassroom or online course, or for larger changes,you will be given a deadline by your trainer forresubmission.

Missing deadlines for submission or resubmission ofyour assessment could result in a Not Yet Competentresult for the unit. If you cannot meet a deadline youmust let your trainer know as soon as possible. Yourtrainer will discuss the reasons why and advise youof the new assessment deadline.

When you have successfully completed all theassessment requirements for a unit you will get acompetent result for the unit and this subject willappear on your Certificate or Statement ofAttainment.

Remember, if you act in a disruptive, offensive oraggressive manner during your assessment, you canbe told to leave the assessment room/area, and thiscould mean a ‘not yet competent’ result by Axial.

What happens if I commit plagiarism?• If at any time, you copy someone else’s work or

use unapproved notes, you could face disciplinaryaction

• If your trainer or supervisor believes that you arecheating, you will immediately be told but will stillbe allowed to finish your assessment

• Your trainer will write a report on the allegedcheating and attach the report to your assessmentpaper

• The matter will then be referred to the TrainingDelivery Manager for appropriate action asoutlined in the Disciplinary Action Policy

• The penalties for this behaviour during anassessment range from a ‘not yet competent’result in the subject being assessed to exclusionfrom Axial for a specific period of time.

What if I am not happy with my assessmentresults?If you are enrolled in a course and are seeking toappeal against an assessment result, you can followthe formal assessment appeals process. Pleasesee our Complaints and Appeals section for furtherinformation on what steps to take in this situation.

Can I get Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?TheRPLprocessconductedbyAxial is an assessmentprocess that acknowledges the skills and knowledgegained through ‘non-traditional’ forms of learning, lifeexperiences, work experience, previous training andformal/informal education of applicants. We wantto provide you with full recognition of your currentskills and knowledge in your course during the RPLassessment process.

Axial will conduct the RPL process by:• Providing access to the RPL process for all

potential and existing participants of courses• Undertaking RPL processes which are fair to all

those involved• Providing appropriate support for all potential RPL

applicants.

The RPL assessment process includes the initialprovision of information, support and counselling,formal application, assessment, post-assessmentguidance and certification for course participants.During the RPL assessment process:• Axial automatically checks your enrolment details

for indications that you may qualify for RPL,however if you feel you qualify for RPL, pleasespeak to us

• The special needs of RPL applicants arerecognised by Axial and we will make thenecessary reasonable adjustments during the RPLassessment process where appropriate

• A variety of RPL assessment options will beavailable to you

• All RPL assessment mechanisms used are valid,reliable, flexible and fair and conducted in anethical manner.

All RPL applications will be processed upon receiptof a completed RPL application form with sufficientsupporting evidence attached to enable a decision tobe made regarding the granting of RPL. All decisionswill be supplied to you in writing within 20 workingdays.

Can I get credit for my previous study ortraining?Yes, credit transfer applies nationally and refers tothe recognition and acceptance by a RegisteredTraining Organisation (RTO) of any AustralianQualifications Framework Certificates and/orStatements of Attainment issued by another RTO,enabling individuals to receive national recognition oftheir achievements.

If your results from your previous training and studiesmatch the units included in your course, then a credittransfer can be made. Speak to your trainer and askthem whether your previous results and training canbe taken into consideration.

What is a Statement of Attainment?A Statement of Attainment is provided in recognitionthat a participant has successfully completedaccredited unit/s of competency. This can be usedas evidence for you to gain credit transfer for thecompetencies with Axial, or another registeredtraining provider within Australia, should you wish tocomplete the course at a later time.

Please note: Any apprentice or trainee whochanges to another RTO will be issued a Statementof Attainment for all units successfully completedwithin 14 days of notification.

How do I get my Certificate or Statement ofAttainment?Upon successful completion of your nationallyrecognised training package qualification andfinalisation of your results, your approved certificateshould be received within 30 days. A list of all units ofcompetency completed will be printed on the reverseside of the qualification. Upon successful completionof a recognised short course offered by Axial, or ifyour Apprenticeship or Traineeship is cancelled, youwill receive a Statement of Attainment within 30 daysof the end of your course.

What happens if I don’t get my certificate,results or I lose them?• If you have not received your Certificate/Statement

of Attainment within 3-4 weeks of finishing yourlast assessment please contact Axial. Please beaware it may take a couple of weeks from yourlast assessment for all assessment to get to headoffice and your results are finalised

• Axial will provide one original copy of yourCertificate/Statement of Attainment free of charge.Charges may apply to further copies

• These charges will vary according to the documentand labour costs associated with replacement aslisted in the Course Fees section

• If you have not updated you address with Axial andyour Certificate/Statement of Attainment was sentto the wrong address you may be charged for re-issue

• However if the documentation was lost in the mailor in an event such as flooding or it was an error byAxial we will reissue at no charge.

How long are my assessment results stored?• Your assessment results will be kept by Axial for

30 years• Your individual assessment records will be kept

until the appeal period has passed and for aminimum of twelve months after the completionof the relevant course/program

• Your results will only be released for legal,educational or individual purposes.

Unique Student IdentifierWhat is a Unique Student Identifier (USI)?From 1 January 2015, all students doing nationallyrecognised training need to have a Unique StudentIdentifier (USI). This includes students undertakinga Vocational Education Training in Schools (VETiS)funded program. A USI is a reference number madeup of numbers and letters. Creating a USI is free.It creates a secure online record of your nationallyrecognised training that you can access anytime andanywhere, and it’s yours for life.

According to the Department of Education andTraining Unique Student Identifier website, the USIis linked to the National Vocational Education andTraining (VET) Data Collection, and this meansan individual’s nationally recognised training andqualifications gained anywhere in Australia, fromdifferent training organisations, will be kept alltogether. Axial is committed to ensuring your privacyis kept in according with the federal Privacy Act 1988and the Student Identifiers Act 2014. Please seeour Privacy and Confidentiality procedure for furtherinformation.

The USI will:• link a student’s VET achievements, regardless of

where in Australia they did the course• let students easily access secure digital transcripts of their

achievements (transcripts will be available from January 2016)• give students more control over their VET

information.

How do I create my USI?Creating your USI is simply a matter of accessing theUSI website (http://www.usi.gov.au) and clicking theStudent Entry section. Alternatively, Axial are able tocreate your USI on your behalf. Your Student SupportOfficer or Training Consultant will provide you withthe Axial USI form if you decide to take this option.The Student Identifiers Registrar privacy policy isavailable at https://www.usi.gov.au/about/privacy-and-unique-student-identifierIn addition, if you choose for Axial to create yourUSI on your behalf, you will be provided with acopy of the Student Identifiers Registrar privacypolicy.

If we are required to run a search to locate your USI,you will receive a notice advising you that Axial haveconfirmed your USI.

Fee StructureFees will vary from course to course; therefore you will besupplied with the fee structure relevant to your course prior toenrolment.

What are your general administration course fees?Some Axial administration service fees are payable bystudents as set out in the table below:• All fees must be paid in advance and be cleared through

the bank before the service can be provided• Additional charges may be identified from time to

time• Payment arrangements for these services can be made

by contacting the Axial Training Accounts departmenton (07) 3387 4400.

RefundsSpecific information regarding refunds relevant to the fundingtype of your enrolment is included on the following pages,however any fees paid to Axial are also subject to your rightsas a consumer, specifically when the training does not meetthe specific purpose discussed during enrolment. You havethe right to obtain a refund for services not provided by Axialin the event that:• The arrangement is terminated early• Axial fail to provide the agreed services

Student fees for fee for service studentsHow do I know if I’m a fee for service student?• If you are enrolled as a fee for service student,

your course is most likely delivered on a self-paced basis, so that you can choose a timeframethat suits your work and personal life

• You will not have any government funding as a feefor service student

• You will pay all course training and other relatedfees.

What are my fees?Your course fees will be given to you as a quotationby the sales consultant prior to enrolment. All coursefees will be given on a course-by-course basis.

How can I get a refund as a Fee for Servicestudent?• You will only be able to get a full refund if the

course is cancelled by Axial before it has started• If a course has started, you will receive a pro-rata

refund for the un-assessed portion of the course• If you withdraw after starting a unit, we will still give

you a proportionate refund• If you cancel your course after enrolment, and at

least 10 working days prior to its commencementdate, you will be refunded, after deducting the non-refundable enrolment fee

• Any course that is cancelled or non-attended within10 working days of its commencement, or after thecourse has started, will result in the full course feebeing payable. No refund will be given

• You can apply to the General Manager forconsideration of a special refund, whereexceptional circumstances have contributed to thecancellation, e.g. medical reasons

Student Contribution Fees forapprentices and traineesWhat is the user choice program?As an apprentice you will most likely be trainingunder a User Choice contract. The User Choiceprogram provides public funding for the delivery ofyour training. Basically the program allows you toenter into a legally binding training contract with youremployer and also allows you to receive structuredtraining from a training organisation, like Axial toachieve a nationally recognised qualification.

How much are Axial’s Student Contribution Fees?Under the User Choice program guidelines Axialmust charge and collect a Student ContributionFee for each apprentice enrolled in Certificate II orabove. This means you will have to pay a StudentContribution Fee if you are studying as an apprenticewith Axial.

The Student Contribution Fee as set by theDepartment of Employment, Small Business andTraining and is currently calculated at $1.60 pernominal hour for each unit (excluding credittransfers). To calculate the Student Contribution Feeyou multiply the nominal

How much do I need to pay?The Axial Training Consultant will advise you and youremployer of any fees to be paid prior to enrolment. TheDepartment of Employment, Small Business andTraining currently offers fee free training for Year 12graduates, as long as you commence yourApprenticeship in the calendar year followingcompletion of Year 12. Talk to your TrainingConsultant about how to access the fee free trainingoption.Can I get a discount off my fees?Yes, but only if:• You have not completed year 12 and are under 17

at the end of February in the year in which Axialprovides training

• You have a current health care card or pensionercard, or are the partner or a dependant of a personwho holds a current health care card

• You are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin• You are going through financial hardship (this will

be decided by Axial)• You are a school-based apprentice or trainee and

Disciplinary policyAs an Axial student you have agreed to comply withour code of conduct upon signing your enrolmentdocumentation. Disciplinary action could be takenfor inappropriate behaviour towards other studentsor Axial staff or for breaching the Axial student rules.A penalty will be imposed under this policy if you arefound to have breached the discipline policy.

Please note that if you are an apprentice or trainee,any disciplinary action or recommendations MUSTbe made with due regard to the provisions of theVocational Education Training and Employment Act2000. Further information can be obtained by callingthe Apprenticeship Information Line on 1800 210 210.

What exactly happens if I break student rules?Three offences can be issued against you. If you have broken the student rules, the following steps willbe taken:

First offence:• A verbal warning will be issued to you and you will

have to attend a counselling session with an Axialstaff member to discuss your actions and yourfuture with Axial

• A record of this verbal warning and counsellingsession will be documented, dated and signed byyou and the Axial staff member issuing the warning

• This record will be placed in your student file.

Second offence:• A formal written warning will be issued to you.

Should your behaviour continue, some of youprivileges with Axial will be removed

• Your training will continue, however you may bedirected to a location away from other students

• A record of this written warning will be documented,dated and signed by the you, the Training DeliveryManager and the Axial staff member issuing thewarning

• This record will be placed in your student file.Third offence:• If you reach this stage of discipline, all student

privileges will be removed by Axial. This meansthat you will no longer have access to training,assessments, and resources or be able to log-in

to on-line courses• Your training will continue, however you will be

directed to a location away from other students• You will be advised of a time to attend a meeting

with the General Manager and the Axial staffmember issuing the warning

• You will be provided with reasons for thisdisciplinary action in writing and any commentsthat you make at the meeting in relation to thebehaviour will be documented

• A copy of the record will be dated and signedby you, the General Manager and the Axial staffmember issuing the disciplinary action

• This record will be placed in your student file.

Remember, you can appeal against certain penalties.The penalty might then be reduced, removed, orincreased and such processes or decisions do notremove your right as a student to take action underAustralia’s consumer protection laws.

Manager immediately about the situation andprovide a written statement, which will explain whyyou have been suspended

• You will be advised of a time to attend a meetingwith the person issuing the disciplinary action andthe Training Delivery Manager

• You will be provided with reasons for thisdisciplinary action in writing and any commentsthat you make at the meeting in relation to thebehaviour will be documented

• A copy of the record will be dated and signed bythe you, the Training Delivery Manager and theAxial staff member issuing the disciplinary action.

The Training Delivery Manager will give you anopportunity to be heard in relation to the misconductor disciplinary action and can undertake any of thefollowing:• Modify or dismiss the charges or action• Reprimand and warn you against repetition of the

breach of discipline• Suspend you for a period not exceeding 14 days,

which shall include any period of suspension• Remove academic privileges• You will also be advised about your right to appeal

against the action and any penalties.

Privacy and confidentialityAxial is committed to the privacy of your personalinformation and as such we comply with the federalPrivacy Act 1988. We have strict policies andprocedures for the collection, use, storage andprotection of all records of individual students. Allrecords relating to attendance, course progress andassessment outcomes are handled in accordancewith these policies and procedures. We do not on-sell any personal information.

What type of information about me do youcollect?• Your contact information and all details included

on application or enrolment forms• Your work performance and course progress• Your information submitted and obtained from you

or other sources in connection with registering for,and undertaking traineeships or apprenticeshipsand private training courses

• Any information about incidents involving you inthe workplace or classroom.

Who gets to see my personal information andrecords?• All your records are kept confidential and can

only be seen by yourself and any parties to yourTraining Contract and Enrolment Agreement. Yourrecords can be provided to other people if youagree to this in writing

• Axial staff including training consultants,administration, management, IT support andtrainers may see your records if they need to forwork purposes or to help you if you have anyquestions

• Axial staff know that your records are highlyconfidential.

We may share your information to applicableGovernment departments including the Departmentof Employment, Small Business and Training as perthe law.

Can I get access to my student records?• You are entitled to access your personal information

or training records at any time by submittinga written request to our administration department

• We will send you your records within 14 days ofreceiving your letter and after verification that therecords are for your eyes only

• In some cases, your records or information mayneed to be retrieved from our archives and thismay take a few weeks to process.

Under the Data Provision Requirements 2012, AxialTraining Pty Ltd is required to collect personalinformation about you and to disclose that personalinformation to the National Centre for VocationalEducation Research Ltd (NCVER).

Your personal information (including the personalinformation contained on this enrolment form), maybe used or disclosed by Axial Training Pty Ltd forstatistical, administrative, regulatory and researchpurposes. Axial Training Pty Ltd may disclose yourpersonal information for these purposes to:

• Commonwealth and State or Territorygovernment departments and authorisedagencies;

• And NCVER.

Personal information that has been disclosed toNCVER may be used or disclosed by NCVER for thefollowing purposes:

• Populating authenticated VET transcripts;• Facilitating statistics and research relating to

Course ProgressYou are expected to progress through your course asper your Training Plan or Training Schedule. You arealso expected to attend all scheduled classes andworkplace training sessions.For Apprentices and Trainees, your workplacetrainer will monitor progress and workplace trainingsessions. If your trainer finds you are falling behindyour Training Plan, strategies will be discussed withyou and your employer to get your studies back ontrack. If you are found to be falling further behindafter implementation of these strategies, Axial mayadvise the Department of Employment, SmallBusiness and Training of your failure to progress.If you are undertaking classroom delivery you willbe provided with a Training Schedule outlining allassessment due dates and a Student Timetableshowing all scheduled classes.

What are my course progress requirements?Campus delivery students will be deemed to havenot met Axial’s course progress requirements if theyfail to achieve a competent result in 30% or more ofthe units of study attempted in each block, or fail toachieve 80% attendance of scheduled class hours.In the event that you achieve less than 70% courseprogress or less than 90% course attendance, theSSO will intervene and determine the reason forthe lack of progress. If further review or assistanceis required, you will be deemed ‘at risk’ and theappropriate counselling will be provided.

How do you monitor my course progress?To ensure that you are on track to complete yourcourse within the expected course duration the SSOwill monitor your progress throughout each block.If your SSO finds that you have been deemed NotYet Competent in your first two attempts at a Unitof Competency, we will advise you of the times ofany mandatory progress support sessions for you toattend.The SSO will compile a report, which lists eachstudent and their results to date. If you have failed tomeet the course progress requirements as outlinedabove, the SSO will deem you as being “at risk”. Youwill be provided advice in writing if your progress isfalling behind expectations and that you have beendeemed to be “at risk”.

What happens if I am deemed “at risk”?The SSO will employ this Intervention Strategy, andarrange for academic counselling to be provided toyou.During the academic counselling session thecounsellor in conjunction with you will determinewhat additional support will be provided to you. Thismay include, but is not limited to, you:

• Attending academic skills programs;• Attending tutorial or study groups;

• Receiving individual case management;

• Receiving assistance with personal issues whichare influencing progress;

A record of the academic counselling session and anyadditional support to be provided will be documentedand signed by the counsellor and you and placed onyour file.What if I continue to fail to meet course progressrequirements?If you continue to fail to meet the course progressrequirements after additional support has beenprovided, the SSO will advise you of the intention toreport you for not achieving satisfactory progress andadvise you that you have 20 working days to accessthe complaints and appeals process.Axial will then assess any submitted complaint orappeal as per the procedure and advise you of theoutcome in writing within 20 working days, outliningthe reasons for the decision. Possible outcomesinclude:

• terminating your enrolment

• permitting you to continue without conditions

• permitting you to continue the course with specificconditions.

How do you monitor my course attendance?

Axial classroom delivery courses have an attendancerequirement of at least 80%. In a case where studentsare unable to attend classes, you are required toadvise your SSO as soon as practicable of yourabsence. If a student is absent due to illness, amedical certificate is required to be submitted. Wherepossible, evidence is also required to be submitted forany other reason for being absent (eg bereavement).

To ensure attendance is being satisfactorilymaintained, your absence or attendance is recordedby the trainer on a class attendance register ateach lesson. If you arrive to class late, it is up to thediscretion of your trainer if they allow you to enter theclass. If you are not permitted to enter the classroom,you will be required to study independently in alocation separate from the class until the nextscheduled break, at which time you can re-enterwith the rest of the class. Attendance details arerecorded in Axial’s Student Management System,and calculated for each student, at the end of eachweek on a cumulative basis, to determine whetherthey are achieving the minimum requirement over theperiod.

Axial monitors student attendance closely and willfollow up with you each day where you have anunexplained absence. Where you are absent formore than 3 consecutive days without approval, oryou are not consistently attending your course or youare at risk of falling below 90% attendance, Axial willadvise you in writing of the failure to meet attendanceexpectations and include details of a plannedcounselling session to address the issue.

Your rights and responsibilities as an apprenticeor traineeAs an apprentice or trainee you:• Will sign an apprenticeship or traineeship training

contract with your employer, an AustralianApprenticeship Centre

• Will attend and perform work as directed by youremployer

• Be polite and professional at work• Receive a wage under an appropriate industrial

contract• Work towards achieving the competencies agreed

to in your training plan by undertaking all trainingand assessment activities within the timeframespecified

• Keep your training record book and log book up todate and in the workplace at all times

• Acknowledge that all workplace documents andmaterials that comes into your possession as aresult of the training, remains the property of theemployer (except as determined by the Trainingand Employment Act 2000).

Axial’s rights and responsibilitiesAxial’s rights and responsibilities for Apprentices andTrainees are to:• Provide you with knowledge, gap training and

assessment for your relevant training package• Develop your training plan, and calculate your

required withdrawal time

• Explain to both you and your supervisor whatwork should be completed prior to the next visit toenable assessment to take place

• Provide up to six to eight workplace visits per year.There may be scheduled classroom attendancefor specific units

• Be notified as soon as possible before a scheduledvisit if you are unavailable so the visit can berescheduled. Failure to do this may mean thetrainer cannot see you until the next scheduledvisit

• Review your withdrawal log at each visit and collectevidence that it has been completed and signed.

Trainees studying onlineFor Trainees studying their qualification online:

• We will set assessment submission dates as partof your scheduled training plan

• Our service commitment is to contact you everyfortnight by telephone, e-mail or our online forums

• We will aim to respond to e-mail enquiries within 1working day

• We will provide you with access to our e-learningwebsite/s

• You will receive your own personal login detailsand have your own online classroom

• Axial student website will support you withyour studies by providing you a space to:

• View and download resources such asassessments, presentations and workbooks

• Upload your assessments for marking• Receive feedback from your trainer for

assessment you have submitted• Keep a personal record of your progress• Post comments onto our forums and chat with

other students• Your trainer will review your training record log at 3

month intervals and you will be required to e-mailthis to your trainer when requested.

Can I get a copy of my training plan?Of course, at the time of enrolment, you and youremployer will both be given a copy and a copy willbe located in your training record book. You can alsocontact our administration department for a copy atany time.

The employer’s rights and responsibilitiesAs part of your Apprenticeship or Traineeshipcontract, your employer’s rights and responsibilitiesare:

• To provide safe facilities and equipment and therange of work required for you to gain the requiredskills for your course

• To provide supervision by a qualified person totrain you during your apprenticeship or traineeship

• At reasonable intervals (of not more than 3months) check that your training record log hasbeen updated

• To review your progress with your trainer and haveinput in assessing your performance on the joband determining the course structure

• If your employer decides to cancel the trainingcontract, you must advise Axial Training in writingwithin 7 days.

Your employer must not• Directly or indirectly obstruct or discourage you

from participating in the required training• Put you at a disadvantage because you are

working on your training or studies.

What wage level should an apprentice or traineebe paid?This depends on how you have progressed duringyour apprenticeship or traineeship. Each newlevel attained increases your hourly pay rate. Youshould discuss pay rates and progression with youremployer.
