Friends, Brethren and all,

Membership did not seem to be a matter of concern when I became a Freemason, though certain jurisdictions were beginning to experience some fiscal stress. Membership wasn’t a problem that caused a great concern in 1996. Some of the wise contributors were ready to lead the way for exploring how serious the problem actually had become. They pointed out that we would find no lasting solution to our fiscal difficulties until we are

ready to manage our membership more effectively. First we have to except the fact that we do have a declining membership and we can only approach it in one of two ways. One by approaching our older membership and encourage them to attend lodge on a more regular bases. Then two have a regular campaign to en-courage those we know who are interested in becoming a mason to fill out a portion to be-come a mason. Either way it will not be a quick path to growth. But to get there we have to get started now right? As always God Bless Your Worshipful Master

Benton West

Greetings Brothers and Sisters

When I was in the 2nd Grade, we read a story about a village whose prac-tice was to take the “old” people, when they became a burden, out in the woods and have nature “take care of them”. When it came time for this particular son to take his father out in the woods, he did what the village expected him to do. He gathered up his father on a sled (since the old man had a problem walking), gave him a little food, and took him through the heavy snow to a place deep in the woods, and left him there. Then the son returned to his

home. However, in very short time, the son felt regret and guilt. He quickly returned to the spot where he abandoned his father and brought him home. Of course, he had to hide his father from the villagers, since he had violated their tradition. This particular winter looked like it was going to be really bad. The son wasn’t sure what to do. The father having faced many bad winters advised his son what to do to stave off starva-tion. When winter had ended, many of the villagers did not survive. However, the son, his father, and family made it through. At first the villagers were angry with the son for violating their tradition, but the son defended his decision and his father. He pointed out that while many in the village had discarded their parents and starved; he honored and protected his father, and made it clear that without his wisdom, his family would have died. Perhaps the eyes don’t see as clearly as they once did; the ears don’t hear so well; the legs don’t move like we wish they would; and the memory is a little slower; but to all our “old” Masons, I want to thank you for your service, dedication, and fellowship. Your wisdom and knowledge is needed and welcomed. To our younger Masons, and even those who have not been Masons very long; if you are not reaching out to our esteemed and learned Brothers, you will have a rough winter. From them is a wealth of knowledge and experience that is desperately needed and freely given. Until we meet again, May the Great Architect of the Universe bless you and your families; our Brothers and Sisters in Masonry, and our Great Fraternity. Steve

Greetings Brethren,

First, I would like to remind you that dues are supposed to be paid by December 31st, and if you miss that date then you are considered in ar-rears.

What that means, according to Grand Lodge Law, is that you can attend your home lodge but you cannot vote, hold office, attend any other lodge or appendant body and you cannot attend Grand Annual Communication.

That being said, Grand Lodge just mailed out the dues cards and I will be getting them in the mail asap. If you know that you pay dues, you don’t have to wait to get a notice from me, you can go ahead and send in your dues which remains $65.

We voted on our proxy for Grand Lodge and will be voting on the Resolutions, Recommen-dations and Grand Junior Warden at our next stated meeting, come to Lodge and vote we would love to see you.

THE MASON AND THE APRON

By Donald E. Webb Past Master Tabernacle Masonic Lodge # 1195

I once saw a Mason that I knew had been in the Lodge for over 50 years. This man was just setting there with an Apron in his hand. He looked up and ask, “Do you know what this Apron means?” I replied, “Oh, yes it is the badge of a Mason.” He stopped me and said, “Beyond what is taught to you in the degrees, what does it stand for?” I replied, “I do not understand, maybe you can explain to me what you mean.” He said “Sit down and I will show you about this Apron.”

He laid the Apron on the table and began to tell about it. “ You see the 2 Strings on the Apron, they remind us of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist, Who remind us of the 2 Books we use to guide us in our work and life - The Holy Bible and The Laws of The Grand Lodge of Texas. These 2 Books represent the boundary lines be-yond which we are never to suffer our prejudices and passions to betray us.

Next he said, “When we look at the Flap, there 3 Sides or Edges and 3 Points. The 3 Edges represent the 3 Principle Tenets of our profession, which are Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. Brotherly Love teaches us that we all are created equal and brings us together as friends and brothers. Relief helps us to seek to soothe the unhappy, to sympathize with each other’s misfortunes, to have compas-sion on each other. Truth is the foundation of every virtue. To be good and true is the first lesson we are taught in Masonry.

The 3 Points of the Flap remind us of the 3 Principle supports of the Lodge, which are, Wisdom, Strength and Beauty. These refer to the 3 Principle Officers of the Lodge, which are the Worshipful Master, Senior and Junior Wardens. Wisdom is represented by the Worshipful Master, because he should have the wisdom to devise labor for the craft. Strength is represent-ed by the Senior Warden, because it is his duty to strengthen and support the authority of the master. The Junior Warden is the represents Beauty, because he sees the meridian sun, which is the beauty and glory of the day, and it is his duty to keep the time of the Lodge.”

He continued, “ When we see the body of the Apron we see the 4 Edges and 4 Points. The 4 Edges help us to think of the 4 Cardinal Virtues, which are Temperance, Fortitude, Prudence, and Justice.

Temperance teaches us to avoid excess or the contracting of any bad habit. Fortitude deeply impresses our minds to guard against any illegal attack to extort from us any the secrets of Masonry.

Prudence tells us to regulate our lives and actions that our conduct may not reveal any of the secrets of Masonry to anyone.

Justice is that standard or boundary of right, which enables us to render to every man his just due.”

He began to explain that, “the 4 Points help us to join the 4 Cardinal Virtues with the 4 Perfect Points of Initiation, which are Guttural, Pectoral, Manual, and Pedal. These remind us of things impressed upon our minds as we went through our initiations into the several Degrees of the Lodge.”

He then spread the Apron out with the Bib in the up position, and said “We now see that our Apron has 5 Edges and 5 Points. The 5 Edges and Points remind us of the 5 Orders of Archi-tecture, which are the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Co-rinthian, and Composite. The 5 Points remind us of the 5 Human Senses, which are Hearing, Seeing, Feeling, Smelling, and Tasting. As the 5

Orders of Architecture are important to the builder to give him the structure to build upon, so the 5 Human Senses are important to us that we may conduct our dealings with each other, by their use.”

He continued, “When we add the 3 Edges to the 4 Edges or the 3 Points to the 4 Points, we come up with the number 7, which in Bible times and somewhat today, is perfect num-ber. The 7 Edges represent the 7 Liberal Arts and Scienc-es. We base our lives on these 7 Liberal Arts and Scienc-es. The 7 Points helps us to remember the structure of our Lodge, which reminds us of the 7 Officers that are needed to conduct our business within our Lodge.

These 7 Officers are the Worshipful Master, Senior and Junior Wardens, the Treasurer and Secretary, the Senior and Junior Deacons.

There also happens to be in our Lodge 7 Other Officers, which are the Chaplain, Senior and Junior Stewards, Marshal and Master of Ceremonies, Musician and Tiler. Each of these has certain duties to perform in order that the Lodge may render the best opportunity for each of its members to get the most out of their work together.”

“There is one other statement I would like to point out. When the Apron is worn with the Bib up, the Top Point points us to God, to Whom we look for all our guidance.”

“Now, what do you think of Our Apron?
