At the University of Richmond School of Continuing Studies, we’ve put together a wide selection of non-credit courses for a mini summer session that begins May 1 and runs through the end of July. Here’s a quick look. Landscape Design. We’re offering several landscape design courses this summer. Breakfast with the Constitution

PilatesPilates is an excellent form of exercise thatdevelops core strength, lengthens muscleand assists with posture stability, balanceand coordination. It also heightens mind-body awareness. Pilates focuses on asequence of exercises that incorporatesboth flexion (abdominals) and extension(erectors and gluteal) of the spine.Exercises are done on the floor on mats. Noexperience necessary.

TennisBeginning Adult. This course focuses on thefundamentals of tennis. Intermediate Adult. This course is designedfor players with a good understanding ofthe fundamentals, but who are lacking theconsistency to take them to the next level.The instructor uses drills to maximize hit-ting time and add placement and directionto your shots. In addition to the fundamen-tals of tennis, there is a focus on the transi-tion from baseline to net. This class is greatfor those interested in singles and doubles.

Advanced Intermediate Adult. This course isdesigned for the serious recreational playerwith a ranking of 3.0-3.5. The class focuseson a variety of drills aimed at stepping upthe power and placement of shots. Theinstructor also introduces specialty shots:drop-shot, slice, and topspin lobs to yourgame. The first hour focuses on instruction-al drills and the last half-hour includes sin-gles and doubles play. Friday classesinclude one hour of fast-paced drillsdesigned to increase reaction time andimprove footwork on all strokes. One class-room session is included in the course.

Yoga on the BallThis course is a blending of Yoga andPilates using the Swiss Balance Ball to alignthe body, build long, lean muscles, anddevelop core abdominal strength. The classintegrates the mind and body connectionwith the use of breathing and relaxationtechniques. Exercises are safe enough forthose with chronic pain and intense enoughfor the seasoned athlete. The balance ballis a very pleasurable and relaxing stretchingaid that helps prevent injuries while revivingtight, tired muscles.

Session III: The President and The Supreme Court: The Delicate Balance of PowerThe President of the United States is arguably the single most powerful leader of any democratic society in theworld. The Supreme Court of the United States is arguably the single most influential “constitutional court” in anydemocratic society in the world. What is the relationship between the executive and judicial branches of govern-ment in our system, and most importantly, how do the powers of the President intersect with the powers of theSupreme Court? To what extent does the President act as a “check and balance” on the Court, and to what extentdoes the Court act as a “check and balance on the President?” This interactive session will examine the constitu-tional text, history, and actions of the President and the Supreme Court in an exploration of the critical elements ofthe “delicate balance” that is vital to our constitutional system.

Zacatecas, Mexico August 1–15, 2005. You will be partnered with a Spanish buddy who works in thesame industry as you in Zacatecas for the two weeks.
