T22: Protection classes to EN 60529

Deinition o the protection category acc. to EN 60529 (DIN 0470) and DIN 40050

The protection category is mentioned as a short mark which consists o two unvarying letters IP and ratios or the protection level,

    or example IP 54.

Protection Classes or protection against oreign bodies

    Protection Classes or water protection

First fgure Designation Scope o protection explanation

    0 No protection

    1Protection against large oreign bodies

    > 50 mm

Protection against accidental, large-surace contact with active or internal moving parts, e.g. with the hand,

but no protection against deliberate access to these parts. Protection against penetration o solid oreign

bodies with a diameter larger than 50 mm.

    2Protection against medium-sized oreign

    bodies > 12.5 mm

Protection against contact by the ngers with active or internal moving parts. Protection against

penetration o solid oreign bodies with a diameter larger than 12 mm.

    3Protection against small oreign bodies

    > 2.5 mm

Protection against contact with active or internal moving parts with tools, wires, etc. o a thickness greater

than 2.5 mm. Protection against penetration o solid oreign bodies with a diameter larger than 2.5 mm.

    4Protection against granula oreign bodies

    > 1.0 mm

Protection against contact with active or internal moving parts with tools, wires, etc. o a thickness greater

    than 1 mm.

5 Protection against accumulation o dust

Complete protection against contact with live or internal moving parts, protection against harmul dust

accumulations. The penetration o dust is not completely prevented, but the dust may not penetrate in such

quantities that the mode o operation is restricted.

6 Protection against ingress o dustComplete protection against contact with live or internal moving parts. Protection against the ingress o

    dust.

Second fgure Designation Scope o protection explanation

    0 No protection

1 Protection against dripping water alling

    vertically

Water drops which all vertically must not have any harmul eect.

2 Protection against dripping water alling

    at an angle

Water drops which all at any angle rom 15 to the vertical, may not have any harmul eect.

3 Protection against sprayed water Water which alls at any angle up to 60 to the vertical, must not have any harmul eect

4 Protection against splashed water Water which splashes rom all directions onto the equipment must not have any harmul eect.

5 Protection against water jet A water jet rom a nozzle, which is directed rom any direction against the equipment, must not have any

    harmul eect.

6 Protection against fooding In the event o temporary fooding, e.g. in heavy seas, water may not penetrate into the equipment in

    harmul quantities.

7 Protection against immersion Water may not penetrate in harmul quanti ties when the equipment is immersed in water under the

    prescribed pressure and time conditions.

8 Protection against submersion Water may not penetrate in harmul quanti ties i the equipment is submerged under water.

    9K Protection against high pressure/

    cleaning with high pressure cleaner

Water under high pressure and rom any direction may not cause damage to the housing.

    Example: Identiying letters IP 65

    Second gure: Protection against liquids.

First gure: Protection against contact penetration o oreign bodies.
