THE OATH OF

If^ HIPPOCRATE'1 swear by Apollo, the physician, and Aesculapius, and Health and

All-Heal, and by God and by whatever 1 hold most sacred, that, ac-

cording to my ability and judgment, 1 will keep this Oath and this

stipulation—I will look upon those who shall have taught me this Art

even as one of my parents, 1 will share my substance with them, and

I will supply their necessities if they be in need. I ^Aill regard their

offspring in the same footing as my own brethren, and I will teach

them this Art, if they shall wish to learn it, without fee or covenant.

I will impart a knowledge of the Art by precept, by lecture and by

every mode of teaching not only to my own children but to the chil-

dren of those who have taught me, and to disciples bound by cov-

enant and oath, according to the Law of Medicine, but to none other.

The regimen I adopt shall be for the benefit of my patients accord-

ing to my ability and judgment and 1 will abstain from whatever is

deleterious and mischievous. 1 will seek to inform my patients fully

about their illness and prognosis, and \\ill always remember that the

final decision regarding their own life rests with the patient. 1 will re-

gard my patients always as fellow human beings and will do everything

possible to preserve their dignity. With purity and with holiness 1 will

pass my life and practice my Art. Whatsoe\ er things I sec or hear con-

cerning the life of men in my attendance, on the sick or e\cn apart

therefrom, which tmght not to be noised abroad, I \\iil keep silence

thereon, counting such things to be sacred secrets. While 1 continue

to keep this Oath unviolated, may it be granted to mc to en^

and the practice oi the Art, respected by all men, in all times. But

should 1 trespass and violate this Oath, ma> the reverse be my lot.

Dr. Jeffrey Wiese

"Our deepest fear is not that we are

inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are

powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not

our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask

ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, tal-

ented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not

to be? You are the child of God. Your playing

small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing

enlightened about shrinking so that others won't

feel insecure around you. We were born to make

manifest the glory of God that is within

us. It's not just in some of us; it's in every-

one. And as we let our own light shine,

wc unconsciously give other people permis-

sion to do the same. As we are liberated

from our own fear, our presence automatically

liberates others."

-Nebon Marulcla, 1994 Inaugural Speech

Your presence liberated us over the years and

it continues to do so. Thank you.

--Gourtesy of Nick Pejic

"Dr. Wiese is a source of inspiration for

me every day in the wards. When I

get tired or grouchy, I always think how

much Dr. Wiese gives of himself and

his time tt) both us and the patients.

A problem that 1 frequently face with

patients is that 1 start to feel resentful of

them when they are noncompliant with

I heir physicians' plans to help them. Dr.

Wiese taught me an alternate way of

thinking about that - we are just "catch-

ers in the rye." It is not for us to accept

or judge patients' actions. We just help

them as we know how and they must

Jo the rest."

Joseph C. Pisano, Ph.D.

Instructor

Department of Physiology & Biophysics

University of Tennessee, Memphis62 South DunlapMemphis, Tennessee 38163

Dear Dr. Pisano:

I take great pleasure in informing you of your appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of

Physiology, Tulane University School of Medidne. I sincerely hope that you will accept our invitation to take

this faculty position at our institution, thus ensuring the beginning of a remarkable thirty-five year tenure. I

envision you being promoted to Associate Professor by 1972, and securing tenure in 1975. Furthermore, youwill become an administrator in 1976 by assuming the directorship of the Financial Aid Office and serving as

the Assistant Dean for Admissions. In 1993, you will bear the mantle of Associate Dean of Admissions, andyou will hold this title until retirement.

My first enticement for you will be the ability to work with W. Clifford Newman for the next twenty-five years

as a teacher, researcher, and administrator until he meets his untimely death in 1992. You and Qiff will be the

inseparable duo that will shape and inspire every medical school class at Tulane from this date until vou retire

thirty-five years later. Though you will spend the last ten years apart from Cliff, 1 assure you the first twenty-

five years of memories will serve as a panacea for the pain and the solitude of the last ten.

Secondly, I give you the working relationships and friendships of VVally Tomlinson, Ed Peebles, Bob Vaupel,

Larry Baudoin, Marc Kahn, Jim Corrigan, John Walsh, Bill Browder, Leon Walker, Gerald Kirby, MaryAnderson, James Fischer, Charlie Dunlap, Leon Weisberg, Blackwcll Evans, April O'Quinn, Anna Epps, IrwmCohen, Marty Litwin, Rune Stjemholm, Gene Hamori, Floyd and Judy Domer, Barbara Bockman, Jim Jeter,

Charley Haddad, Kevin Krane, Katie Knight, Jim Hamlin, Dan Winstead, Phil Kadowitz, Rodney Davis, Phil

Daroca and Raju Thomas, to name but a few.

Finally, over 5,250 medical students will be blessed with your teaching, your creative financial aid packages,

your acceptance letters, and the luxury of having the "admissions office" open dailv from 3:00 AM onwardsfor advice, emergency loan checks, a cigarette (or two...), and a friendly voice and receptive ear. You will be

an instrumental force behind the highly successful MEdREP program for 18 years for disadvantaged students.

1 can assure you numerous teaching accolades from tlie Owl Club, the intellectual, personal, and financial

gratification of countless students, and the reality that the last day you walk through our hallways, our school

will be changed forever. For after thirty-five years, you will serve as the embodiment of all that is right andgood at our medical school.

rhank you.

Godspeed and 1 remain.
