6 EPIPHANY
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.
Collect of the Day
O God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because in
our weakness we can do nothing good without you, give us the help of your grace, that in keeping
your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
First Lesson: Jeremiah 17:5-10
Thus says the LORD: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their
strength, whose hearts turn away from the LORD. They shall be like a shrub in the desert,
and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness,
in an uninhabited salt land. Blessed are those who trust in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD.
They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear
when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it
does not cease to bear fruit. The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse -- who can under-
stand it? I the LORD test the mind and search the heart, to give to all according to their ways, ac-
cording to the fruit of their doings
Lector: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

Deanery Days, March 2nd Bishop Tuttle House at St. Michael’s Cathedral
“Media Mission and Money” The media portion will cover topics ranging from effective announcements to
communicating with the Diocesan Center to managing your online presence. The
Mission session will look at what the Episcopal Church in Cuba has in common
with the Diocese of Idaho and how we learn about ministry and mission from
unexpected sources. Finally, Finance! You will learn everything you ever
wanted to know about parish finances.... and then some!
Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, nor lingered in the way of sin-
ners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful! Their delight is in the law of the LORD, and they meditate
on his law day and night.
Congregation repeats Antiphon.
They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not
wither; everything they do shall prosper. It is not so with the wicked; they are like chaff which the
wind blows away. Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes, nor the sin-
ner in the council of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the
wicked is doomed.
Congregation repeats Antiphon.
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrec-
tion of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ
has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. We are
even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ--whom he
did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has
not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then
those also who have died in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we
are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of
those who have died.

People: Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn 440 Blessed Jesus, at thy word Liebster Jesu
Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
People: Glory to you Lord Christ.
Gospel: Luke 5:1-11
Jesus came down with the twelve apostles and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his dis-
ciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon.
They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with
unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from
him and healed all of them. Then he looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are
poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled.
“Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.” “Blessed are you when people hate you, and
when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that
day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to
the prophets." "But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. "Woe to you
who are full now, for you will be hungry. "Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn
and weep. "Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false
prophets."

Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God, our neighbor, and ourselves.
Deacon and People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought,
word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you
with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we
humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may
delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Voluntary Prelude in b-minor, BWV 544 Johann Sebastian Bach
Notes on Today’s Music
Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748) was a cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach. Not only was he an organist and composer, but also a lexicographer. He compiled the first dictionary of musical terms written in German, which can only be described as enor-
mous. As a composer, he wrote 132 organ preludes based on Lutheran chorales. Although essentially a self-taught musician and
composer, Edward Elgar (1857–1934) gradually developed a compositional style that has been seen as evocative of British imperial glory. Its deeper qualities, however, are rather of aspiration and nostalgia—an intimately personal expression, but also a style creat-
ed at the end of a tradition. His most renown works were created after his 40th birthday, and while English in tradition, they are
also influenced by German music from Weber, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Wagner. The Irish-born Charles Villiers
Stanford (1852-1924), often labeled a “Victorian” or “Edwardian,” in fact labored mightily to rescue English church music from
its conventional doldrums. He wrote 10 operas, many choral and orchestral works, chamber music, and songs. Vaughan Williams
suggested that had Stanford been Italian or German he would be celebrated in every opera house. Calvin Hampton (1938-1984) was a leading American organist and sacred music composer. As organist at Calvary Episcopal Church in New York City for twenty
years, he created settings of the Episcopal liturgy and innovative choral works, sometimes utilizing diverse elements as rock, gospel
hymns, and synthesizers. Plainchant differs from modern music in that it is monophonic rather than harmonic; it is meant to be sung without instrumental accompaniment; it does not employ strict time-values; it uses “modes” which differ significantly from the
modern major and minor scales; and it uses “square-note” notation on a four-line staff. Henry Walford Davies (1869-1941) was an
English composer who served with the Royal Air Force during World War One, and is the composer of the Royal Air Force March Past which is still played today. As an organist, he served at London’s Temple Church, and his most celebrated pupil was Leopold
Stokowski. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) most likely wrote the Prelude and Fugue in b-minor around 1727 and played it at
the memorial service for the Electress of Saxony & Queen of Poland. Bach wrote the music for this service, which included a canta-ta, in the same key. B-minor was described as listless and melancholy, and Bach often used it for stately or mournful occasions.
