National Institute of Design Madhya Pradesh (NID MP) is an autonomous institution under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India. The Institute has commenced academic activities for spread-ing design education, research, and practice from the Academic Year 2019-2020.

Background:

• In early 2007, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (erstwhile Department of Indus-trial Policy and Promotion), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India envisioned the National Design Policy aimed at creating a design-enabled innovation economy and strengthening design edu-cation in the country.

• With design and innovation taking prime impor-tance in many sectors, policies, and schemes of the government such as “Make in India”, “Skill India”, “Digital India”, “Startup India”, and “Smart City initi-atives” to name a few, it becomes imperative to pro-mote design education to the next level. India needs the skill and expertise of professionally-trained designers to contribute to the national missions announced by Central Government.

• Four New NIDs were set up in Amravati, Kurukshet-ra, Bhopal & Jorhat, under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.

• The Union Cabinet has given its approval on 12/09/2018 for introduction of Bill in Parliament for amendment of NID Act, 2014 to include the four new National Institutes of Design (NID) within the ambit of the National Institute of Design Act, 2014 and to declare them as Institutions of National Im-portance (INIs) at par with the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.

• Soon after getting INI status, new NIDs will be eligi-ble to offer Bachelor Degree in Design (B.Des.) and Master Degree in Design (M.Des.) as well as PhD Degree in Design.

NID Madhya Pradesh offers full-time four year Grad-uate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) in the academic year 2020-21 with specialization streams of Industrial Design, Communication Design, and Textile & Apparel Design with a multi-disciplinary approach to design education.

Details of category wise seats are given in the table below:

*maximum seats in any programme can be 30, keeping the total seats as 75

Note:• Successful candidates admitted to the GDPD pro-

gramme at NID Madhya Pradesh will be required to attend a mandatory foundation programme of one-year duration.

• Allotment of a discipline of choice will be based on a candidate’s performance in the Foundation Pro-gramme/ First Year.

The one-year Foundation Programme introduces stu-dents to the fundamentals of design and helps develop ways of perception, aesthetic sensitivity, understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of design and relationship of design with human senses and emotions, culture, envi-ronment and ecology.

Basic design studio courses are augmented by introduc-tory studies in Humanities. This allows the students to develop a world view, understanding of the Indian milieu and the socio-cultural context for Design to operate. The varied inputs over two semesters provide the necessary direction, stimuli, facilities and experience to foster crea-tivity and thereby help each individual discover their own identity and potential. The foundation programme is the basis on which the remaining design curriculum is built.

Programme is dedicated to enabling the learning and development of extraordinary, innovative leaders, who will bring new levels of creativity, vision, and integrity to the discipline.

This extremely diverse programme delivers to develop competitive edge in learners to be industry ready for all mass production-based industry through design.

The programme not only prepares to focus on the ap-pearance of a product, but also on how it functions, is manufactured and ultimately the value and experience it provides for users.

Foundation Year

Industrial Design

Programme deals with the extreme diversity that lies within the broad spectrum of this discipline. Systems- based approach is delivered dealing with the totality of media and messages within the culture or an organization as a singular integrated process.

Design skills are accordingly developed to be customized to specific orientation of every cultural interface, peo-ple, organization as an interface and experiential factor. Learner is exposed to various sub domains of this wide field through various studio assignments and eventually they choose to major in one of the specialized domains.

Textile and Apparel Design

This is a unique program addressing Textile, fashion, textile based lifestyle accessories and interior design-ing requirement in its broadest spectrum. The program strikes a balance in the domains of textile product development, and apparel designing. It is deep rooted in scientific processes of textile development and Garment manufacturing technology.

Students will also develop high calibre and potential in both traditional handcrafted sector and sophisticated modern technology of textile and apparel industry.

The program also strikes a balance with inputs in the areas of the art of design, the science of chemistry and the perspective of history in a rich, challenging learning envi-ronment at the creative forefront of the textile industry.

Note : Hostel and Mess charges to be borne in addition to tuition fees.
