The sun r ises early on the Arctic tundra.

Tuktu l ies surrounded by his herd. He opens his eyes . He knows it is ear ly, but he can’t s leep anymore. He is too excited.

Today is his f irst bir thday!

Tuktu stretches and looks around at his herd. They s leep soundly. Tuktu nudges his brother, who l ies beside him.

His brother opens one eye and groans . “G o b a c k to b e d , Tu ktu ! I t ’s to o e a r l y .”

Tuktu feels sad. Doesn’t his brother remember that today is Tuktu’s special day?

ᑐᒃᑐ ᑕᓯᔾᔫᖅᐳᖅ ᑐᒃᑑᖃᑎᓂᓗ ᑕᑯᒋᐊᖅᐸᐃᑦ. ᓯᓂᑦᑎᐊᖅᑐᐃᓐᓇᑦ. ᑐᒃᑐᑉ ᐊᖓᔪᓂ ᑐᐹᕆᐊᖅᐸᐅᒃ, ᓴᓂᓕᖅᖠᕆᒐᒥᐅᒃ.

ᐊᖓᔪᖓ ᐃᒡᓗᐃᓐᓇᕐᒥᒃ ᐅᐃᖦᖢᓂ ᓂᓪᓕᑐᐃᓐᓇᖅᐳᖅ. “ᓯᓂᒃᑲᓐᓂᑐᐃᓐᓇᓕᕆᑦ, ᑐᒃᑐ! ᐅᓪᓛᖑᓗᐊᖅᑐᖅ.”

ᑐᒃᑐ ᓄᒫᑦᑕᒃᐳᖅ. ᐊᖓᔪᖓ ᐃᖅᑲᐅᒪᙱᒻᒪᑦ ᐅᓪᓗᒥ ᑐᒃᑐ ᐃᓅᓕᕐᕕᒃᓯᐅᕐᓂᖓᓂᒃ?

Tuktu decides to vis it his fr iend Ukal iq. Ukal iq wi l l be up! He always gets up early.

Tuktu runs toward Ukal iq’s home. He l ikes the way the wet moss squishes under his hooves . He laughs at the funny sounds it makes .

What kind of bir thday surprise wi l l Ukal iq have for me? Tuktu wonders .

ᑐᒃᑐ ᐱᖃᓐᓇᕆᔭᒥᓄᑦ ᐅᑲᓕᕐᒧᑦ ᐳᓛᕆᐊᕈᒪᓕᖅᐳᖅ. ᐅᑲᓕᖅ ᑕᐃᒪ ᐃᖅᑯᒪᔪᖅ! ᐅᓪᓛᕈᐃᓐᓇᐅᔭᖅᑐᖅ.

ᑐᒃᑐ ᐸᖓᓕᒃᐳᖅ ᐅᑲᓕᑉ ᐊᖏᕐᕋᖓᓄᑦ. ᖁᕕᐊᒋᕙᐅᒃ ᐃᒪᖅᓱᒃᑰᕆᐊᒃᓴᖅ. ᑐᓴᖅᓴᐅᓂᖓ ᐃᒡᓚᐅᑎᒋᓪᓗᓂᐅᒃ.

Tuktu arr ives at Ukal iq’s home. “ H e y , U k a l i q ,” Tuktu cal ls , looking around. There is no answer.

Tuktu tr ies again. “ U k a l i q?” St i l l , there is no answer.

Tuktu turns to leave, but then he sees Ukal iq hopping toward him.

“ U k a l i q ! ” Tuktu cal ls . A smile stretches across his face.

ᑐᒃᑐ ᐅᑲᓕᐅᑉ ᐊᖏᕐᕋᖓᓄᐊᖅᐳᖅ. “ᐅᑲᓖᕐᖓᐃ,” ᑐᒃᑐ ᐅᖃᖅᐳᖅ ᑕᑯᓇᒃᖢᓂ. ᑭᐅᔪᖃᙱᓚᖅ.

ᐆᒃᑐᒃᑲᓐᓂᖅᐳᖅ. “ᐅᑲᓕᖅ?” ᓱᓕ, ᑭᐅᔪᖃᙱᓚᖅ.

ᑐᒃᑐ ᐅᑎᕆᐊᓕᖅᑎᓪᓗᒍ ᑕᑯᕗᖅ ᐅᑲᓕᕐᒥᒃ ᖃᐃᓕᖅᑐᖅ.

“ᐅᑲᓕᖅ!” ᑐᒃᑐ ᑐᖅᖢᓚᕗᖅ. ᖁᖓᖦᖢᓂ.

Ukal iq is surprised to see Tuktu.

“O h , h i , Tu ktu . W h a t a re y o u d o i n g h e re? ” Ukal iq says .

“ I a m h e re to v i s it y o u ! D o y o u w a nt to p l a y h i d e - a n d - s e e k? ” Tuktu asks .

“O h , I ’m s o r r y , Tu ktu . B u t I ’m j u st s o b u s y to d a y . Ca n y o u co m e b a c k a n oth e r d a y? ”

ᐅᑲᓕᖅ ᑐᒃᑐᒥᒃ ᑕᑯᓂᐊᕋᓱᒋᙱᒃᑲᓗᐊᖅᐳᖅ.

“ᐊᐃᖓᐃ ᑐᒃᑐ. ᖃᓄᐃᓐᓇᕕᑦ?” ᐅᑲᓕᖅ ᐅᖃᖅᐳᖅ.

“ᐳᓛᕆᐊᖅᐸᒋᑦ! ᐃᔨᕌᕈᒪᕕᑦ?” ᑐᒃᑐ ᐊᐱᕆᕗᖅ.

“ᒪᒥᐊᓇᖅ, ᑐᒃᑐ. ᐅᓪᓗᒥ ᐱᔭᒃᓴᖃᓗᐊᕋᒪ. ᖃᑯᒍᑭᐊᖅ ᖃᐃᒃᑲᓐᓂᖔᓛᓕᖅᐳᑎᑦ?”

Tuktu’s head drops as he turns to leave. Ukal iq is too busy to play. Did he forget that today is Tuktu’s bir thday?

Tuktu remembers his fr iend T ir iganiaq l ives close by. He decides to vis it him. Maybe T ir iganiaq wi l l want to play. Maybe he wi l l have a bir thday surprise for Tuktu!

ᑐᒃᑐ ᐅᑯᓪᓗᓂ ᐅᑎᖅᐸᓪᓕᐊᓕᖅᐳᖅ. ᐅᑲᓕᖅ ᐱᔭᒃᓴᖃᓗᐊᖅᑐᖅ ᐱᙳᐊᕆᐊᒃᓴᖅ. ᐳᐃᒍᕋᒥᖃᐃ ᐅᓪᓗᒥ ᑐᒃᑐ ᐃᓅᓕᕐᕕᒃᓯᐅᕐᓂᖓᓂᒃ?

Tuktu runs over to T ir iganiaq’s den.

“T i r i g a n i a q? ” Tuktu cal ls into the den.

T ir iganiaq pops his head out . “ H i th e re , Tu ktu . I ’m a fr a i d n ow i s n ot a g o o d t i m e . I ’m i n th e m i d d l e of s o m eth i n g . Ca n y o u co m e b a c k l a te r? ”

Tuktu’s face fal ls . “O h , o k a y .”

Tir iganiaq ducks back into his den.

ᑐᒃᑐ ᐸᖓᓕᒃᓯᕗᖅ ᑎᕆᒐᓂᐊᑉ ᑎᓯᖓᓄᑦ.

“ᑎᕆᒐᓂᐊᖅ?” ᑐᒃᑐ ᑐᖅᖢᓚᕗᖅ ᑎᓯᒧᑦ.

ᑎᕆᒐᓂᐊᖅ ᑎᓯᒥᓂᑦ ᓄᐃᕗᖅ. “ᐊᐃᖓᐃ, ᑐᒃᑐ. ᒫᓐᓇ ᓈᒻᒪᙱᑲᓚᐅᖅᑐᖅ. ᐱᓕᕆᐊᖃᑲᓚᐅᕋᒪ. ᐅᐊᑦᑎᐊᕈ ᖃᐃᒃᑲᓐᓂᕐᓂᐊᓕᖅᐳᑎᑦ?”

ᑐᒃᑐ ᓄᒫᑦᑕᒃᐳᖅ. “ᐄ.”

ᑎᕆᒐᓂᐊᖅ ᑎᓯᒥᓄᑦ ᐳᓚᒃᑲᓐᓂᖅᐳᖅ.

Tuktu plops to the ground. This is not the bir thday he had hoped for. Wil l anyone remember that today is his special day?

Tuktu sees his fr iend Nanuq of f in the distance. Nanuq stands on the open tundra. She sways back and for th, twir ls around, and moves her paws graceful ly.

What is Nanuq doing? Tuktu wonders . Is she. . .dancing?

Tuktu runs to f ind out .

ᑐᒃᑐ ᑕᑯᕗᖅ ᐱᖃᓐᓇᕆᔭᒥᓂᒃ ᓇᓄᕐᒥᒃ. ᓇᓄᖅ ᓇᖏᖅᓯᕗᖅ ᐅᔭᐅᒪᑦᑎᐊᓕᖅᖢᓂ ᓄᓇᒥ. ᐊᐅᓚᕗᖅ ᒧᒥᖅᑐᑎᑐᑦ, ᐅᐃᔾᔮᖅᐸᒃᖢᓂ, ᐃᓯᒃᑲᒥᓄᓪᓗ ᒧᒻᒪᔪᒃᖢᓂ.

ᓇᓄᖅ ᖃᓄᐃᓕᐅᖅᐸ? ᑐᒃᑐ ᐃᓱᒪᕗᖅ. ᐅᓇ.. .ᒧᒥᖅᑐᖅ?

“ N a n u q ! ” Tuktu cal ls .

Surprise spreads over Nanuq’s face. “Tu ktu ! W h a t a re y o u d o i n g h e re? I d i d n ot ex p e c t to s e e y o u ! ” she says .

“ I a m l o o ki n g fo r s o m e o n e to p l a y w ith m e ,” Tuktu says . “A re y o u d a n c i n g? Ca n I d a n ce w ith y o u? ”

“O h , we l l , I w a s a c tu a l l y j u st a b o u t to l e a ve , Tu ktu . I h a ve s o m ew h e re I n e e d to b e s o o n . S o r r y ! ”

Nanuq dashes of f.

“ᓇᓄᖅ!” ᑐᒃᑐ ᑐᖅᖢᓚᕗᖅ.

ᓇᓅᑉ ᑮᓇᖓ ᑕᐸᐃᖅᐳᖅ. “ᑐᒃᑐ! ᓱᕕᑦ? ᑕᑯᓂᐊᖅᓱᕆᙱᑕᒋᑦ!” ᐅᖃᖅᐳᖅ.

“ᐱᙳᐊᖃᑎᒃᓴᖅᓯᐅᖅᑐᖓ,” ᑐᒃᑐ ᐅᖃᖅᐳᖅ. “ᒧᒥᖅᐱᑦ? ᒧᒥᖃᑎᒋᓚᒋᑦ?”

“ᐋᒻ, ᐊᕗᙵᐅᓂᐊᓕᓵᖅᑐᖓᓕ, ᑐᒃᑐ. ᓇᒧᙵᕆᐊᖃᕐᓂᐊᕋᒪ. ᒪᒥᐊᓇᖅ!”

Tuktu’s l ip quivers . His fr iends do not have t ime for him. They al l forgot his bir thday!

ᑐᒃᑐ ᐃᕝᕗᓕᖅᐳᖅ. ᐱᖃᓐᓇᕆᔭᖏᑦ ᐱᕕᖃᖅᑐᖃᙱᓚᑦ. ᐳᐃᒍᖅᑐᐃᓐᓇᐅᔪᑦ ᐃᓅᓕᕐᕕᒃᓯᐅᕐᓂᖓᓂᒃ!

Tuktu hears a voice cal l ing his name.

“Tu ktu ! H e y , Tu ktu ! ”

Tuktu turns and sees Umingmak walking toward him.

“A re y o u o k a y , Tu ktu? ” Umingmak asks .

“ N o, I a m n ot ! ” Tuktu cr ies .

ᑐᒃᑐ ᑐᓵᓕᖅᐳᖅ ᑐᖅᖢᓚᔪᒥᒃ ᐊᑎᖓᓂᒃ ᑕᐃᓯᓪᓗᓂ.

“ᑐᒃᑐ! ᐊᐃᖓᐃ, ᑐᒃᑐ!”

ᑐᒃᑐ ᕿᕕᐊᕋᒥ ᑕᑯᕗᖅ ᐅᒥᖕᒪᖕᒥᒃ ᐊᒡᒋᖅᑐᒥᒃ.

“ᖃᓄᐃᙱᒃᑲᓗᐊᖅᐱᑦ, ᑐᒃᑐ?” ᐅᒥᖕᒪᒃ ᐊᐱᕆᕗᖅ.

“ᐋᒃᑲ, ᖃᓄᐃᑦᑐᖓ!” ᑐᒃᑐ ᑭᐅᕗᖅ ᕿᐊᓪᓗᓂ.

“Tu ktu , te l l m e w h y y o u a re u p s et ,” Umingmak says calmly.

Tuktu takes a deep breath.

“To d a y i s m y b i r th d a y , a n d n o b o d y re m e m b e re d ! ”

Umingmak looks at Tuktu with a smile. “Tu ktu , co m e w ith m e . I w a nt to s h ow y o u s o m eth i n g . I th i n k y o u w i l l fe e l m u c h b ette r.”

“ᑐᒃᑐ, ᖃᓄᐃᓐᓇᕕᑦ,” ᐅᒥᖕᒪᒃ ᐅᖃᖅᐳᖅ ᓂᐱᑭᖦᖢᓂ.

ᑐᒃᑐ ᓂᐅᕐᔪᐊᖅᐳᖅ.

“ᐅᓪᓗᒥ ᐃᓅᓕᕐᕕᒃᓯᐅᕋᓗᐊᕋᒪ, ᑭᓯᐊᓂ ᐃᖅᑲᐅᒪᔪᖃᙱᑦᑐᖅ!”

ᐅᒥᖕᒪᒃ ᑐᒃᑐᒧᑦ ᕿᕕᐊᖅᖢᓂ ᖁᖓᑉᐳᖅ. “ᑐᒃᑐ, ᒪᓕᙵ. ᑕᑯᑎᑦᑐᒪᒐᒃᑭᑦ. ᖁᕕᐊᑦᑕᖕᓂᐊᖅᑰᖅᑐᑎᑦ.”

Tuktu fol lows Umingmak. They walk up a big hi l l . When they reach the top, Tuktu looks down. He sees his herd and al l his fr iends . They yel l ,

“ S u r p r i s e , Tu ktu ! H a p p y B i r th d a y ! ”

Tuktu is surprised!

ᑐᒃᑐ ᐅᒥᖕᒪᖕᒥᒃ ᒪᓕᓕᖅᐳᖅ. ᐱᖑᑯᓗᖕᒧᑦ ᒪᔪᖅᐴᒃ. ᖄᖓᓄᐊᕋᒥᒃ, ᑐᒃᑐ ᐊᒻᒧᑦ ᑕᑯᒋᐊᖅᐳᖅ. ᑐᒃᑑᖃᑎᓂ ᐱᖃᓐᓇᕆᔭᖏᓪᓗ ᑕᑯᕙᖏᑦ. ᑐᖅᖢᓚᕗᑦ, “ᑎᓪᓕᕐᓇᐃᑦ, ᑐᒃᑐ! ᐃᓅᓕᕐᕕᒃᓯᐅᑦᑎᐊᕆᑦ!”
