World Cup Day Junior School pupils were rocked by World Cup Fever when they held their own World Cup Day in the penultimate week of term. The children were put into groups to represent a country in the tournament. They then spent the morning painting their country flags and designing their all important match tops, whilst they learnt about the country they represented. In the afternoon the teams competed in a World Cup Tournament, whilst wearing their new match tops. The matches were taken very seriously by all the players and the winners were as follows: Italy – Kits and Squirrels Greece – J1 and J2 USA – J3 and J4 Netherlands – J5 and J6 Well done to everyone who took part for putting in such great effort and enthusiasm and for excellent sportsmanship throughout.

Summer Solstice

On Saturday 21 June, Summer Solstice, Pitsford School held its first Family Fun and Sports Afternoon. Current pupils and parents joined with staff and Old Pitsfordians to make the most of the fantastic weather in the School’s beautiful grounds. Many of the children brought their bikes and were able to enjoy the freedom of cycling around the School grounds. After the BBQ, everyone enjoyed toasting marshmallows around the campfire. Some families chose to camp the night and many of the families who did not camp, said they would like to do so next year. The event was very successful and will definitely be repeated next year. The Pitsford Post will have details nearer the time.

English Speaking Board Lessons are available from J2 to Year 8.

Please contact the School Office for further inform ation

Moving Up Day Friday 27 June was ‘Moving Up Day’ at Pitsford School and what a busy day it was too! Our Junior School pupils spent time in the classes they will be in from September 2014. Pupils who are joining the Junior School in September were also invited in, so that everyone could start making new friendships and could also meet their new class teachers. The youngest children in Kits and Squirrels went on a Teddy Bears’ Picnic and they all brought in a favourite teddy from home to join in the fun. The children moving up into the Senior School were joined by the pupils who are starting Pitsford School in Year 7 and together they spent the day exploring the Senior School’s buildings and facilities, getting to know one another and meeting the teachers. At the end of the School day, everyone’s parents were invited to join their children for an informal BBQ in the School grounds. Unlike much of the country, Pitsford School managed to avoid any rain until the very end of the day: the sun was certainly shining down on us and we were all able to have a great day. We’re sure all the children will be very happy in their new classes in September and we extend a warm welcome to all the new pupils who are joining us.

Musical Inspiration Last week, a string quartet from Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust (NMPAT) visited Pitsford School and performed for years 3-7. The quartet comprised of two violins, a viola and a cello and together they played a superb range of pieces, some of which you would not have expected to have been played on stringed instruments. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and could be seen tapping along to music which ranged from Jungle Book’s Bare Necessities to the theme tune of Star Wars. The performances were to give the children a taster of what these instruments could offer and judging by their enthusiasm in response to questions at the end of the ses-sions, they obviously did just that!

Speech Day To mark Pitsford School’s 25 year Anniversary, Malcolm Robinson MBE was the Guest of Honour at this year’s Speech Day. Mr Robinson was one of the founders of Pitsford School and Pupils, Parents and Governors sat with rapt attention, while he talked about some of the events which led to the successful opening of the School. In 1987 Mr Robinson, a University Lecturer living in Pitsford, became disillusioned with the education on offer to his two sons by the state sector. He believed in the idea of setting high standards, a strong work ethic and the role of family values and along with a small group of like minded people, he set about creating an independent grammar school for boys. In September 1989, Pitsford School, then known as Northamptonshire Grammar School opened its doors for the first time to 47 boys, with a headmaster, Dr Malcolm Tozer and six members of staff. In 1999, under the Headmaster Simon Larter, girls were admitted for the first time. The School has continued to grow in strength over the years and still offers the same excellent education and sense of family to all of its Pupils today. In addition to Mr Robinson, other Founders present at Speech Day included Lesley Allitt, Sally Bevan, Lady Morton, Judith Robinson, Jeanie Turner, Keith Turner and Joan Tice. Mr Robinson and Mr Turner took great pleasure in presenting prizes to this year’s Prize Winners. Full details of the winners and their achievements will be published in the next issue of The Pitsfordian. After the formal proceedings, everyone was invited to stay for refreshments in the School’s grounds and to have a look around the state-of-the-art Duckworth Building which houses the Junior School.

Senior Sports Day Senior School Sports Day was hugely enjoyed by everyone who took part. It was a fitting year end for Year 11, who had returned to School last week for an A Level course induction week. Congratulations to House Athletics 2014 winners: Robinson.

Mr Toone was pleased to present the Robinson House Captain, Josh Whittingham, with the Sir William Morton Cup in recognition of this achievement. The Cup will be on display in Pitsford Hall for the next year, decked in Robinson House’s blue ribbons.
