Glendale HeIghts & Army Trail Road in Bloomingdale this month. It happens to be owned and operated by our very own Kingdom patient, Laura Columbo, her Dad, Larry & Brother, Luco! They have been working hard to get ready for their new adventure. I am sure we'll see you there! A big thank you goes out to St. John's School in Wheaton, who were kind enough to send us potted plants

as a thank you to us for our third grade puppet show performance. Tales of the King: Long time

~ Kingdom patient, Dennis Mahoney, had a great j idea for our newsletter....Dr. Bob's Greatest

Stories! Dennis remembers early one Saturday morning when Dr. Bob was working on the office renovation installing cabinets when he and his wife, Judy, arrived with the little girl they had been babysitting. It seems while playing she had fallen and knocked out some teeth! Dr. Bob put down his drill ... picked up another one, if you know what we mean, and got to work. He sent Judy back to the scene to find the teeth. She almost fainted, but our Dr. Bob was just fine! They also shared many fond memories of dental appointments back in the day when our very own Kingdom Princess, Courtney, was the dental assistant! My how time flies on by. Have a great Dr. Bob story? Let us know and we'll share it with the kingdom.

We have also had a lot of questions about which toothpaste is truly helpful. American's spend nearly 1.5 billion dollars on toothpaste every year. Don't spend your

dollars on a product that doesn't work or can 6,Y cause damage! Toothpaste began about 3000 to ~ 5000 BC with the Egyptians, who made a dental

cream by mixing powdered ashes of oxen hooves with myrrh, burned egg shells and pumice. Tubes weren't introduced until prior to wwn. The problem with the early tubes was they were made of lead/tin alloy tubes with an inside coating ofwax. Due to the discovery that the lead was leaking into the paste so the tubes were cbanged, and by the end of the twentieth century, pure plastic tubes were used. But what are the ingredients in toothpaste? Fluoride: The most important toothpaste ingredient, and it wasn't introduced until the 1950's! Fluoride incorporates itself into tooth enamel making your teeth more resistant to acids produced by plaque bacteria, as well as acids found in fruit juices, soda (both regular and diet) and certain foods. Detergents: help mix ingredients in the paste and create the foaming action we associate with toothpastes. Foam keeps the toothpaste in our mouths, preventing it from dribbling out as we brush. Most commonly used is sodium lauryl sulfate or SLS. SLS research has linked this ingredient to canker sores in susceptible individuals. Although research is conflicting, if you suffer from canker sores you may want to try a SLS free toothpaste. Several are available including Verve Ultra and Biotene Dry Mouth Toothpaste. Biotene and Spry toothpaste also offer the advantage of xylitol. Flavoring Agents are needed to mask the unpleasant SLS taste. Most toothpastes add saccharin.

Xylitol, however, has been shown to help fight decay causing bacteria, and is an uncommon but excellent Humectant. Humectants give toothpaste its texture as well as retain moisture so that your toothpaste does not dry out. Glycerin, sorbitol, and water are commonly used. Thickeners such as carrageenan, cellulose gum and xanthan gum are commonly used to keep paste thick. Preservatives prevent the grown of microoganisms in your paste so there is no need for refrigeration. These include sodium benzoate, methyl paraben and ethyl paraben. Coloring Agents such as artificial dyes are used to make the variety of colors, and titanium dioxide is used to make some pastes white! Abrasives give toothpaste its cleaning power. They remove outside stains and plaque. Common abrasives include calcium phosphates, alumina, calcium carbonate, silica, and baking soda. Keep in mind baking soda toothpastes are not only abrasive, but may aggravate high blood pressure in susceptible individuals. Unfortunately, many toothpastes, especially whitening pastes, do not significantly whiten teeth, but damage tooth enamel. Once enamel ,s lost, it never grows back. Worn tooth enamel results in yellowing as the thinned enamel reveals the yetlowish dentin (root) layer below. Dentin is made up of tubules that allow stimuli such as from hot, cold and pressure to travel down and trigger the tooth nerve, causing pain and discomfort. Sensitivity toothpaste's, including Biotene Sensitivity and Sensodyne, have active ingredient, potassium nitrate, which closes off the exposed tubules, resulting in diminished sensitivity. Often relief is not apparent for a couple of weeks. Colgate Total effective, but not high in abrasives, and has the antibacterial agent, Triclosan. Want brighter teeth? Brighten them where it counts...from the inside. Crest strips will make your teeth two to three shades brighter. Tray systems will result in more dramatic effects, which take one to two weeks. Use caution with over-the-counter bleaching systems. Know your ingredients! These delivery trays often allow the irritant bleach to overflow onto the gum tissue and also ingestion! Avoid these problems witb a custom tray. Want white teeth now or have sensitive teeth? We offer one-hour in our office bleaching, where the bleach is mixed with a desensitizer, and it comes with custom trays for touch-ups or for those who want to go even brighter! Of course all of our kingdom patients who refer a new patient receive a custom bleaching tray and bleach for free!

" Toothpaste alert. Nicaraguan police seized 6,000 tubes of a& Chinese-made toothpaste, labeled "Excel and Mr. Cool," that ~ was suspected of containing a chemical that killed at least 51

people in nearby Panama last year. All U.S. imports of Chinese toothpaste were halted a couple of weeks ago to test for diethylene glycol, a chemical commonly used in antifreeze and brake fluid. Moral of the story...stay healthy and safe. Use a paste that contains fluoride, low abrasives and is approved by the American Dental Association! Toothpaste tips...no need to squeeze, run the tube on the edge of a counter to neatly push that paste up. DVD/CD scratched? Take some toothpaste, rub it over the disc, rinse and dry using a clean, soft cloth to restore them back to new!

As always, it is our goal as well as our mission statement to "Serve patients as a knowledgeable, fun, and gifted team, inspiring trust while making a difference with our patients

and each other." Sevenleelh Ed, June 2007
