The Port Shepstone Lions Club has experienced a busy few months and it will not be slowing

down in any way. We had a great 2016 Lions Show, Thanks to Convener Lion Jean Masson and every person involved. Final figures are out and a healthy amount was raised for charity to allow the Club to plough these funds into the community for the year ahead. Our Lion mates from Reitz joined us for the duration of the Show, Thanks to them for their support through the weekend.

A number of us Sheppie Lions went up Sani Pass for a weekend where great fellowship and the odd beer was enjoyed. Well done lion Nico for organising the weekend and thanks to all those that went with us. The annual Blind Bowlers tournament took place last weekend and this was once again a huge success. This is a project that we undertake that actually makes money and we have to thank Madelaine Gouws for this and also carrying on with her late f a t h e r ’ s l e g a c y a n d passion for this project.

During the Zone Meeting which was held at our Club a few weeks back, our masco t , Ced r i c , was “kidnapped” by our Lion c o l l e a g u e s f r o m Ramsgate. I did receive a ransom note and this was to donate 100 tins of dog food to the local SPCA. A very n ice Centenn ia l project idea, so we, as a club, decided to donate 100KG’s of Dog food to the SPCA. Well worth the

payment for our trusty mascot.

We have one of our flagship projects coming up shortly by way of the Annual ECL Leadership camp for the Port Shepstone High School newly elected prefects. A full weekend packed with fun and laughter and interaction with the youth from Sheppie High. This is a weekend they really look forward to and thanks to Lion Hilton and Lion Lady Bondi and all the Lions and Lion Ladies for your commitment to the weekend. Last but not least, it is indeed an honour to have the current Council Chairman, “Superman of Lions” Denis Meyer, being from our club. Good luck Denis for your year ahead, we wish you all the best, and we are there for you. Undoubtedly the best ambassador for Port Shepstone Club. ”

On behalf of Hibiscus Kennel Club I would like to congratulate you on an excellent show this year,

I thank you especially for the way in which you accommodated the dog handlers and their dogs. Unfortunately we cannot park them and leave and they find that type of situation very stressful.

Thank you too to Dennis for going the extra mile and to Jane for finding us a stand at the last minute. I did send my application in timeously but it disappeared into cyber space.

Thank you to the MC for all his help.

RegardsJenny Robertson

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to you and your very special team for another very successful Show. The amount of work that must go into the organisation of such an event is enormous and really praiseworthy. WELL DONE, I salute you all.

Sincere regardsPat WilsonKingsburgh Lions

Once again many, many, thanks for the wonderful weekend the Port Shepstone Lions and Riverside Sports Club gave our Blind Bowlers Region and everyone had a great time. Our lunch at St.Michaels Sands was excellent and Jenny, our vegetarian lady, said it was the best lunch she had ever had! Kind regards,Peter.National Association of Blind Bowlers.

On behalf of the Benoni Lakes Lions Club and more importantly, the affected residents of Nestpark, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Port Shepstone Lions Club for their very generous and most welcome donation towards the tornado relief efforts. It has been a long time since I have been so deeply affected by a project, not only because of the effect it has had on the residents of Nestpark, but also by the camaraderie shown by Lions within Multiple District 410. There is no doubt, this is TRUE LIONISM. Once again, many many thanks.

PDG Nick Mare (Club President)

I was honoured to represent the District at the opening ceremony and prize-giving of the Port Shepstone Lions show. The Sheppie show is a project which is famous throughout the District and is something we're all proud of. Thank you to the Port Shepstone members for putting the Lions name forward so prominently while raising very significant funds to help serve the needy. Thank you also to the other clubs from around the District that lend the Port Shepstone club a hand, coming from as far as Reitz - your generous assistance to fellow Lions is what being a Lion is all about.

The 2016 South Coast Lions' Show was a great success.

The event was supported by approximately 8000

locals and holiday makers, all of whom thoroughly

enjoyed the wide variety of entertainment provided for the

whole family. The grounds layout provided good exposure

for the 100 exhibitors and stallholders, both indoor and outdoor. There was ample parking right next to the show

grounds and the toilet facilities were constantly maintained by a dedicated cleaning staff. The electricity generators

for the entertainment and catering tents were sponsored by Mascor and Multicrop Construction and diesel was

sponsored by Wozani Fuels. Show organisers, The Lions Club of Port Shepstone, were extremely grateful for the

sponsorship and support provided by main sponsors, UGU South Coast Tourism.

The Show started off with the traditional Lions' "Laugh

Out Loud" Comedy Evening on Thursday.

Approximately 800 tickets were sold and the

entertainment tent was packed. The evening entertainment

began with a superb performance by singer Dion

Williamson. Qadasi (David Jenkins) accompanied by Maqhinga Radebe then provided the audience with an

outstanding compilation of Maskandi songs. Veteran comedian Mel Miller then took to the stage and provided

hilarious stand up comedy, generating much laughter from the very festive audience. The evening ended off with

an entertaining performance by well known local entertainer Winston Smile. The comedy evening was a great

success and the organisers are most grateful for the support received from the many local companies who

attended.

The Saturday edition of the Show was, once again very well supported. Thousands of visitors started to stream through the gates shortly after opening time at 9am. Despite the

heavy traffic entering the Country Club, there were no incidents reported. Mix 93.8 FM, a Gauteng based community radio station that can also be tuned in via DStv Audio Channel 824, very kindly

attended this year's Show and provided live broadcasts on both the Saturday and the Sunday.

The arena entertainment schedule started off with the South Coast Strongman Competition which was well supported by several contestants who kept the crowds in awe with their exceptional strength and abilities. This was followed by an entertaining dog agility display by the Hibiscus Kennel Club. The Circus Balloon then performed a number of exciting stunts and magical tricks which were enjoyed by both young and old. The official opening ceremony also took place in the main arena. Guests of honour included Hibiscus Coast Mayor Cynthia Mcwebu, UGU Deputy Mayor Johnny De Wet, UGU South Coast Tourism Chairman John Irven and Lions District 410-C Governor Kin Van Wyk. On Sunday morning, the second annual

Lions' Show MTB Classic Mountain bike

race took place with both the start and

finish of the race taking place in the main arena.

The three categories, the 45km, 20km and kiddies

and rainy weather conditions. The event was

organised and run by Mandie Stander and the

Burry Stander Foundation.

Gaby Frey organised a dog walk around the Country Club which ended with an agility display in the main arena. This

was followed by another entertaining show by the Circus Balloon and a highly entertaining remote control Rally

Cross race which continued through the afternoon until the closure of the arena at 4pm.

uring July Port Shepstone Lion Ladies visited Port

DShepstone Regional Hospital’s Maternity Ward and handed out mothers and babies parcels to several new

mothers. Several of the mothers arrived at the hospital in labour with literally nothing for their new born babies. This amazing project was spearheaded by Lion Ladies Estelle O’Neill and Anna Compion. Each parcel contained a soft baby’s blanket, a facecloth, towel, toy, 4 outfits for the baby, nappies, a little bonnet and something for the mother. Nursing sisters and patients alike were delighted with the wonderful support shown by the Port Shepstone Lion Ladies’ Club.

uring August a group of Sheppie Lions and

Dfriends visited Sani Pass for a weekend getaway and to drive up the pass for one

last time before the road is tarred.

Sani Pass is the mother of all South African mountain passes. Statistically and in every sense, it out distances, out climbs, and out performs all it's competitors with consummate ease to have become the most iconic gravel pass in SA.

The pass remains a challenging drive in 4x4 vehicles with all the drama, scenery, bad weather and treacherous conditions expected of a pass with a summit altitude of 2876m ASL. That equates to 9400 feet and at 10,000 feet aircraft need pressurised cabins!

The tight zig-zagging curves of Sani Pass, one of the most magnificent mountain passes in South Africa, ascend through the sheer cliffs of the Drakensberg, linking KwaZulu Natal to the independent country of Lesotho.

The route is also known as the ‘roof of Africa’ and for good reason - the views from the peaks are spectacular and usually reserved only for those willing to hike for a couple of days. A pub, renowned as the highest in the world, lies at the top of Sani - 2874 metres above sea level.

Sani Pass began as a rough mule trail along which donkeys traversed loaded with wool and mohair on the way down the pass, and blankets, clothing and maize meal on the return journey. The pass was opened to vehicle traffic by David Alexander, whose company Mokhotlong Mountain Transport was the first to operate on the pass in 1955.

The pass can be journeyed today in a car, although a 4X4 vehicle is recommended as it is both steep and rough, but in the initial days many of the corners took at least three attempts. In winter one risks snow on the roads and often ice can be a problem. And passports are essential as one passes through an international border at around 1900 metres.

About 25 minutes’ from the Lesotho border, on the road to Mokhotlong, before the saddle, along a section that hooks left before dropping into a long valley, lies a section of snow (if it snows) - the paradox being that until one reaches this valley one cannot assess the feasibility of skiing, hence only the hardened enthusiast takes to the pass.

Trip organiser, Lion Nico De Jong romping in the snow!
