PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

We’ve had a busy first half of the year and the next six months promise to be even more exciting for the Club and our Members.

We were honoured to have Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Mr. Heng Swee Keat at the SCC on 21 June 2019 for a business lunch dialogue organised by the British Chamber of Commerce, during which he discussed Singapore’s future economic agenda & the Singapore Budget.

The Club is busy rolling out an e-commerce platform for our Members; with this we hope to bring exclusive deals in beverages and sports equipment to our Members. It will also help us increase our purchasing from our suppliers and bring greater discounts to the Club Members. In the long term we hope to use this platform for greater benefits to our sponsors and greater sponsorship to our Sport Sections. The GC will keep looking at innovative ways to enhance our income streams without taxing Members.

The newly renovated Stumps is also open for Members. With a better workflow in the bar and innovative design we hope it will provide Members with an enhanced experience. It is our continuous endeavour to keep upgrading Members’ facilities at the Club to bring greater value to your Club Membership.

Our Sections have been very busy – congratulations first and foremost to our Hockey Section for winning the 2019 National Hockey League Premier Titles! This sweet victory comes again four years since the Men’s First and Ladies’ First teams won double national titles in 2015. Thank you for all your hard work lifting the SCC flag up high!

Meanwhile, our Cricket men won the SCC vs Royal Selangor Club (RSC) Interport, and our Netball ladies emerged the Bowl Champions at the Netball Bangkok Southerners Invitational Tournament. The Football Section’s SCC Legends Team won the Hari Raya Challenge Cup against the Football Coaches Old Boy (FCOB).

Within the Club, at the Intersection Pool and Snooker Tournament, Billiards & Snooker Section won after a hard fight against the Squash Section, while Bowls Section came in

2nd runner up. At the Ladies Darts Night, Squash Section emerged winner while Blonde Bombshells came in second place. We will keep organising these Intersection events to foster greater bonds between Members of different Sections .

At the time of my writing, National Day Parade rehearsals have started at the Padang. We are privileged to be located right next to the heart of the nation’s celebrations with front-row seats to rousing aerial displays, proud parade contingents marching in and out, thrilling mobile column parades, and colourful firework shows. Do join us each Saturday from now until National Day for these shows and the special F&B promotions we have exclusively for these days, and take note of the dedicated pedestrian access path we have from Cavenagh Bridge to the Clubhouse and the timings to avoid the mobile column traffic.

Ticket sales for the SCC Night Race (20 – 22 September 2019) started a little over a month ago and have been selling fast. Do purchase yours at www.sccnightrace.com before they sell out.

Another big event coming up is SCC’s celebration of the Singapore Bicentennial. We are preparing two enthralling weeks of events and activities for Members and guests and look forward to sharing more information with you very soon.

Most importantly, we have adopted SportCares – the philanthropic arm of Sports Singapore - as our Club charity for this year. To support the excellent work that SportCares does to engage the community, all the events and activities that we are organising for you for the rest of this year will have avenues through which you can support this charity. Please refer to p.6 for more detailed information about SportCares.

Thank you for your support of the Club.

See you at the Club!

SCC Celebrates the Singapore Bicentennial

SportCares – SCC’s Adopted Charity

As part of SCC’s Bicentennial Celebrations, we have adopted SportCares as our Club charity for this year.

The philanthropic arm of Sport Singapore, SportCares uses sport as a force for social good, leveraging sport experiences to make a positive difference to the lives of the vulnerable and underserved communities in Singapore.

Through sport, SportCares:

• Builds & nurtures relationships with children, youth at-risk, persons with disabilities and seniors, empowering them to live better;

• Strengthens the capabilities of like-minded organisations to deliver care and inclusive programmes to everyone; and

• Collaborates with public and private sector organisations as part of integrated solutions that help to address and solve complex social issues.

SportCares designs and delivers sport-based development programmes to engage the community. Programmes for children & youth at-risk include football, rugby, swimming, athletics and floorball. SportCares run Play-Ability and YES! I Can programmes to encourage greater sport participation among persons with disabilities & special needs and promote acts of inclusiveness to strengthen community care. And SportCares’ seniors programme help build wellness and improve their quality of life.

For the rest of this year, SCC will be organising events and activities through which you can donate to SportCares – including the SCC Night Race and SCC’s Bicentennial Celebrations. Our Sport Sections will also be organising initiatives and events to raise funds within their Sections.

CLUB NEWS

“When we engage youth through our programmes, they get to know more about themselves, pick-

up the value of grit and learn to label and manage their emotions using the principles of sports.

And when they begin to see the possibilities in themselves, we connect them to learning beyond

sports. Through pathway programmes, these youth learn to sharpen pertinent life skills such as

communication, leadership and coaching.

And throughout the whole endeavour, our youth are constantly reminded that their vulnerabilities

are the greatest measure of courage and they owe it to their personal experiences to show-up

and be seen in the community, helping those in need.

Through sports, an entire life can change.”

CLUB NEWS

JUL / AUG 2019 THE PADANG 9

To help ensure our Members can relax and enjoy themselves at the Club, the Management strives to maintain a comfortable environment with adequate facilities that are not over-crowded, and to run the Club in accordance with good corporate practices.

As such, we would like to advise our Members on the following:

1. Random Identity Verification Checks

The Management will conduct random checks periodically to ensure that only Members and their guests are present on our grounds. We would appreciate it if you would present your Membership card to our staff when it is requested for verification purposes.

Members are reminded to adhere to Club Rule 52 and Bye-Law (h) to enter their guests’ names in the guest book located at the Member Services Desk in legible handwriting, be present with their guests in the Club throughout the duration of that guests’ visit, and ensure their guests observe the Rules and Bye-Laws of the Club. Please note that SCC Membership cards are strictly non-transferrable to guests.

We seek your kind understanding and thank you for your patience with the staff conducting these checks.

2. Staff Whistleblower Policy

The General Committee (GC) and Management is committed to providing a high standard of compliance with accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, corporate governance, and auditing requirements.

To promote good corporate practices and deter any wrongdoing, the Management – with the advice of the GC – has drawn up a Whistleblowing Reporting Policy and Procedure that provides an avenue for Members and staff to raise concerns in confidence about possible violations, and offer the assurance of protection from reprisals or victimization for whistleblowing in good faith.

Our sincere condolences go out to the family of the departed.

Stumps has a New Look!Stumps Bar In 2018, the Property Subcommittee reviewed the condition of our favourite sporting watering hole, Stumps Bar. The Committee proposed a soft-refurbishment project for the interior to the General Committee, with improvements and efficiencies to the bar and service areas.

For over a decade the bar has been well used by all our different Sports Sections and over the

years its popularity and heavy traffic also meant that it had become quite worn out. In particular, the Bar itself, the service station area, and the audio visual equipment, showed just how fast our digital world progresses. Cupboards have become crammed with cables from various add-on electronic devices, video players, CD players and, like the film Brazil, a myriad of cables and conduits servicing the ever-changing entertainment requirements.

The Project therefore was undertaken as a soft-refurbishment project, taking care to work within an agreed GC budget, improving and updating the bar design, the equipment, and service station areas whilst maintaining the identity of Stumps as a Sports Bar .

Interior DesignThe interior ambience complements the Clubhouse building, working with the interior elevations, the bay windows, and the Victorian period cast iron columns overlooking the Padang.

The new feature Bar design in dark stained wood and tempered ceramic tile takes its influence from the period millwork and case goods seen around the Club, especially in The Padang Restaurant’s trophy cabinets. The increased bar size with a new layout and equipment will increase efficiencies, declutter service areas, and improve the quality of refreshments. Along with the bar, a new trophy cabinet has been added for our most cherished of sports trophies.

Working to enhance the original interiors, refined ceiling moldings and cornices have been added, original pendant lights restored, and the surfaces painted white and light grey to create a cool, tropical ambience. The flooring around the bar area has been tiled in a modern interpretation of the familiar Peranakan tile design, ubiquitous to Singaporean buildings of the Club’s period, adding character and connection to the outdoor terrace. As the refurbished memorabilia returned to the walls and shelves, the sporting heritage of our Club, its Members and VIP guests will define the character of the bar.

We hope Members will enjoy the refreshed ambience along with the operational service improvements provided and we look forward to the many great sporting moments to come with a sundowner or two.

SCC Reflectionson National Day

SCC Reflections

on National Day

14 THE PADANG JUL / AUG 2019

Mr. Retna SabapathyProperty Subcommittee MemberWhich is your most memorable National Day Parade?1968.

It rained during the entire parade. It was also the first and only time Officer Cadets formed the Guard Of Honour. All who Participated were soaked to the skin. Not a single person from the President (the late Yusof Ishak) and Cabinet members, to the various contingents and spectators who lined the entire route, FLINCHED.

Truly REMARKABLE.

Mr. Vikraman RamanSocial Subcommittee MemberWhat is your favourite part of the National Day Parade? National Day is that experience of Singaporeans coming together and sharing their all for the One People, One Nation, One Singapore. On the Padang, this is a really special feeling and I am very proud that our Club is in the thick of this Bicentennial celebration!

Mr. Victor OlsenFinance Subcommittee Member

What does National Day mean to you?National Day is the time for us to reaffirm and remind ourselves that we are Singaporeans first and foremost and that we are duty-bound to embrace and grow our nation as one united people regardless of ethnicity, status, language or religion.

As we celebrate our unique success as a dynamic and progressive nation on National Day, it is timely that we redouble our efforts to build a more compassionate, people-focused and caring Singapore-centric society.

Ms. Preeti Dubey Establishment Subcommittee MemberWhat is your birthday wish for Singapore? It is with great pride and immense delight that I wish Singapore a happy 54th National Day, amidst the celebration of Bicentennial year. Singapore has become a nation that excels on multiple frontiers. From modern characteristics like infrastructure, technology, and people development, to the basics such as healthcare, and clean environment with beautiful flora & fauna that make it a garden city. Singapore is a utopian economic case study that inspires many. May Singapore continue to shine as bright as ever today, and in the many years to come.

As we get ready to celebrate the Nation’s 54th birthday, we asked some

of our Subcommittees’ Members to share their thoughts, hopes and wishes for Singapore.

JUL / AUG 2019 THE PADANG 15

Mrs. Margaret CunicoFood & Beverage Subcommittee Member (and Marcom Subcommittee Chairlady)

What local dish is most representative of Singapore to you? When I travel I generally enjoy the food options available in that country and don’t crave any of Singapore’s food. But between Changi Airport and home, I’m already planning to have my mee pok and chye tau kway fix the very next morning. That’s when I know I’m home. These two dishes are available island-wide and 8 out of 10 stalls serve decent to good variations in terms of seasoning, texture and ingredients. You can’t find quite the same in any other country, only in Singapore.

Mr. Chandra MohanRules And Membership Subcommittee Member

What significance does National Day have for you?National Day brings joy and pride to me as a Singaporean. I have witnessed our National Day and the various celebratory events that our citizens, both young and old, have participated in with fond memories and togetherness over the last few decades and they make me feel like a true Singaporean in many fond and loving ways.

I have been part of this nation’s transformation and progress that have benefited our citizens since the 1950s, to when we gained independence in 1963, merged with the Malaysian Federation that same year, before we separated and became an independent and democratic nation on 9 August 1965.

Singapore was historically a mixture of many ethnic groups - mainly Chinese, Malays, Indians and Eurasians - surviving in one small poor country with hardly any natural resources, except our industrious people who came together as a nation and worked hard to build a more progressive society.

Today, we are considered by many to be an economically advanced First World Nation. But I hope we will also progress to become a more refined, caring and compassionate society.

Let our people - the citizens and residents in Singapore of diverse ethnicity, religions, social strata and ages - synergise and unite as a happy, good-hearted and genuinely caring nation.

Ms. Monica AlsagoffMarCom Subcommittee MemberWhat is your favourite National Day song?My all-time favourite National Day song is probably ‘Home’, written by Dick Lee and produced by Dr. Sydney Tan. National Day isn’t complete without it.

It’s not an anthem, it’s a song that has a melancholic homesickness note to it. Home becomes more important when you’re away from it. It strikes an emotional chord in every Singaporean especially if you are living overseas and when you hear the song ‘Home’, it makes you miss home even more.

It has a bittersweet line that tucks at your heart, and it’s my favourite line in the song:…“This is home, truly, where I know I must be”. This one line says it all.

Mr. Martin Goerojo Games Control Board Chairman

What sort of Singapore do you hope your children will inherit in 10 years’ time? National Day is time to pause, reflect and celebrate, celebrate life. It reminds us how far Singapore and its citizens have come from its humble beginnings and let’s us dream how much further it can go.

Singapore has been my home for nearly 2 decades now. I had the privilege to witness the faster than fast development of a city, a country and a nation. Esplanade, Marina Bay financial centre, integrated resorts, MCE tunnel, Gardens by the Bay, National Stadium none of those were around when I first arrived. What progress Singapore has made.

Being a Father to 3 beautiful kids (Singaporeans), I wish for them and us all to have a great future ahead.

Did You Know? The Singapore Cricket Club’s Notable Firsts

The Club began offering evening entertainment in 1934, with the first of a series of concerts and cabaret shows staged in June of that year.

In 1938, the Club made a

dramatic decision to accept women for

associate membership.

In that same year, it

decided to serve dinners

in the evening for the first

time, and extended its

operating hours to 9pm.

Joseph Cashin

became SCC’s

first native-born

Singaporean

President in 1959.

During the AGM of 1962, the Club’s entrance fee was waived for the first and last time in a bid to recruit Asian members.

This same AGM also removed the requirement that committee members

needed to be British by birth.

Dennis Boyle was SCC’s first permanent

chairman of sports section convenors.

This soon grew into the important position of

Chairman, Games Control Board, which John Clark

assumed in 1967.

K. Balasundram was SCC’s first

full-time professional General Manager.

Lyn Hodgins became

the Club’s first female sports convenor,

running the Squash Section in 1984.

The Club’s first non-European President who

served from 1976 – 1978 was

Justice T S “Sam” Sinnathuray.

The 1990s saw

the Club’s first

Chinese President

in Charlie Phua.

DECONSTRUCTING … A PAIR OF ANTIQUE SILVER EPERGNES

Have you ever been in The Padang Restaurant and noticed, hiding in plain sight on the top shelf of one of the display cabinets, a handsome pair of sterling silver epergnes? Pronounced EE-pern, these ornamental table centrepieces would have adorned the grandest dining tables from the 18th century onwards.

Consisting of a central flute or bowl, standing on a flared foot, they typically have six baskets or vases radiating from the central flute. They would have been filled with fruit, nuts or sweetmeats and their vases held flowers or candles. An exceptionally beautiful example is featured regularly in the TV series, Downton Abbey!

The earliest record of an epergne was in 1725. The word ‘epergne’ is probably a derivation from the French word ‘épargne’, which means ’saving’. Their use meant less work for the servants as less dishes had to be passed around. The epergne also made the most of the space on the table. By suspending the smaller bowls from the larger bowl, it was less cluttered. As it was impolite for a guest to lean across the table for an item, larger tables would have required multiple epergne which is why they were often made as pairs.

The examples in the SCC collection are very typical of Edwardian period (1901 to 1910) and were made by the well regarded silversmiths, Walker & Hall, in Sheffield, England in 1908.

The company was originally established in 1845 by George Walker and called Walker & Co. but was renamed Walker & Hall when Henry Hall joined the firm in 1853. They went on to become famous silversmiths and made a fortune from the electroplating boom of the late 19th and early 20th century. Sadly, the business closed down in 1971.

This pair of epergne were donated to the Club by C.M. Arthur, Esq. in 1908, the same year they were hallmarked. If they were to come up at auction today, we would estimate their value to be between S$2,500 – S3,500.

SCC INTERSECTION

POOL & SNOOKER TOURNAMENT 2019This year seven Sections signed up for the one-day Pool and Snooker Tournament held at the Men’s Bar on Saturday, 7 June. The seven Sections were defending champions Golf, Squash, Tennis, Bowls, Balut, Bridge and B&S (Billiards & Snooker) Section. Each team submitted five players and they played three games - Pool Scotch Doubles (where each player plays alternate shots), Snooker Singles and Snooker Scotch Doubles. In order to fit the event into one afternoon, the games were limited to six reds and capped at 20 mins. The team that had the most points after 20 mins would be declared the winner.

The teams were drawn into two groups A and B and the winners and runner up of two groups playoff-ed each other in the semi finals.

In the first semi final, Bowls played against B&S Section. In the second semifinal, it was a tough match between the Tennis and Squash with Squash edging out Tennis.

In the finals, B&S narrowly managed to beat Squash 2-1 in the finals. Bowls played well to win the third spot.

We wish to thank President Sher Baljit Singh for presenting the prizes and all the supporters that afternoon.

The B&S Section would like thank everyone for coming down, with special mention to Bridge and Balut for fielding teams. It was also nice to see some ladies from Tennis and Balut. We look forward to hosting it again next year and we think that eight teams will be a sweet spot and suggest that some Sections combine to form a team.

From top left, clockwise: Captain of Billiards & Snooker team Bak Choon receiving the trophy from SCC President Sher Baljit Singh; Mr. Velu receiving the 3rd place prize for Bowls; Group team photo of Squash and Billiards & Snooker.

On Saturday, 1 July 2019, our good friends from RBSC Polo (Royal Bangkok Sports Club Polo) made their way to SCC to have our Annual Interport match.

The Thai team was led by Convenor Eddy (Mr. Tossaporn Saksanguanmanoon). The matches were held at the Men’s Bar from 2 pm to 5 pm. There were five singles and three doubles and all matches were played in a very friendly atmosphere of 2 frames per match. RBSC Polo won 9 frames to 7.

The standard of play was very high even though the match was friendly and we witnessed a high break from Dr Korn of 60 points. The other singles match worth mentioning is between Glen Yeo and current RBSC Polo champion Yom that led to a score of 1-1.

After the match we hosted our Thai friends to dinner at The Oval & Verandah . We look forward to visiting them in Bangkok next year.

Bridge Beginners’ / Improvers’ Course(s)SCC Victoria Room, 9th. to 25th. May inc.Our evergreen director, Carl Parker, conducted both these courses with great success over quite a few Saturday mornings. The Improvers’ Course was run on Saturdays between 4th.and 25th. May inc, with a record 18 participants, mainly from the Beginners’ Course, and most of whom now play, from time to time, on Mondays at the Beginners’ Table. Please do continue to “support” these events as and when you can, whether you’re only just beginning to get into this noble game, or looking towards honing your already acquired “skills” even further!

The busy second quarter of our annual Bridge calendar continued unabated, packing into it the Beginners’ Course, the “Improvers’” Course (beginners’ enhancement), the Quadrangle Games, the Premier Bridge League, Hari Raya evening and a Tournament Directors’ (T.D.) course to boot in between! THE SET ANNUAL BOWLS CHALLENGEIt was a memorable weekend for the Singapore bowling fraternity on 13 and 14 April 2019 as 45 bowlers from Singapore Cricket Club (SCC), Evergreen Lawn Bowls Club (ELBC) and Tanglin Club (TC) came together for the inaugural SET Annual Bowls Challenge. The idea for this competition was mooted three years ago and it finally came to fruition this year hosted by SCC with the objective to foster closer ties among the local bowling clubs and to raise the profile of the sport of Bowls.

The first game of the challenge took place on 13 April between SCC and TC in which SCC won all 5 rinks with 96 shots for and 55 against. The second game, on the morning of 14 April, was played between TC and ELBC in which ELBC won 4 : 1 with 94 shots for and 63 against. In the third and last game of the challenge, ELBC took on SCC and won 3 : 2 with 87 shots for and 75 against. While ELBC and SCC tied on points and number of rinks won, ELBC edged SCC on the aggregate shots difference, and thus won the Trophy.

The 2020 SET Annual Bowls Challenge will be hosted by TC followed by ELBC in 2021.

NATIONAL PAIRS 2019 A total of four teams from SCC took part in the National Pairs Championship held at the Tanglin Club from late April to May – three Men’s teams and one Ladies’ team. All three Men’s teams did well enough to qualify for the Quarter-Finals. Bob Gattie and Srinivasan, who played together for the first time, could not continue their fairy-tale journey as they lost to the eventual champions Anthony Loh and Thomas Leong from ELBC. Melvin Tan and KU Menon, who also played together for the first time, powered past TC’s Graham Dare and Zoher Motiwalla, but narrowly lost to Anthony and Thomas by 2 shots in the Semi-Finals.

Our best pair in Edmund Lin and Christian Huang made it to the Final, overcoming TC’s Rodger Kimpton and Bernard Foo and ELBC’s Law Kwok Fai and Tan Kah Hock with relative ease. In the Final match played on 25th May against Anthony and Thomas, they got off to a good start and led 10-6 after 9 ends. However, they faltered in the second half to trail 10-16. Alas, it was not to be, as they eventually lost 16-19 to the defending champions who have now won the Men’s Pairs title 3 years in a row.

Our Ladies’ pair in Amira Goh and Candy Lai competed in a single round-robin group with 4 other teams. They did their best, winning 2 games out of 4, but missing out on the top-two Final playoff. SCC member Mary Lim, who partnered with SingTel’s Margaret Lim, clinched the Ladies’ Pairs title after defeating the SingTel team of Jane Low and May Lee 19-15 in a pulsating encounter in the Final. Excellent effort by all our SCC teams nevertheless!

FRIENDLY WITH FRANKSTON BOWLING CLUBSCC and TC bowlers joined forces on 26 May to play a friendly match with 28 bowlers from the City of Frankston Bowling Club who flew in from Melbourne. TC hosted the games and dinner thereafter. It was good fun.

SCC Bowls Section Members donned in their new blue section shirts and ready for the challenge against Evergreen Lawn Bowls Club.

Bowlers from Frankston Bowling Club, Tanglin Club and Singapore Cricket Club all set for a friendly match.

National Pairs 2019 finalists Anthony Loh and Thomas Leong from ELBC and Edmund Lin and Christian Huang from SCC.

INTERPORT GAME: SCC SELECT 2-1 ROYAL SELANGOROn Friday, 22 March, the Section played its first Interport fixture of the season, with the new focus on a team selected from across the entire Section in order to produce a more representative side.

After welcoming our guests to a pre-match lunch in the Victoria Room, the teams moved to Dempsey for the game.

A very solid first half performance saw SCC take the lead with a well worked team goal, converted by Jas Bhens. After giving away a soft goal to allow our opponents back into the game, we finally secured a victory with a superb solo effort from the industrious and outstanding Mike Hemmingway, who deservedly picked up the Man-of-the-Match honours.

The game was played in a competitive but cordial manner with the new selection policy proving popular.

COSMOS LEAGUEHaving swept everything before them in the 2017-18 season, the Cosmos League side came up short this season but still managed to become runners-up in both the League and Cup Competitions.

In the League, we finished second to the Rangers and lost a fiercely competitive Cup final 2-0 to the French.

Top goal scorer was Liam Shotton, with the Player and Young Player of the Season awards going to Ronnie Smollett and Ivor Teagie respectively.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE (NFL)The season did not get off to a good start, with the team losing their first two games. Both were narrow losses for a newly assembled team, with an average age of only 23.

SCC showed character by winning the next two games. However, in our fifth game, momentum was lost when we went down 1-0 to a stunning free kick against Jungfrau Punggol. However, we bounced back to win our next game displaying both organisation and determination.

This latest win propelled the Club to 5th place in the 11 team league table, only 4 points behind leaders, Siglap FC, which we still have to meet.

The league now takes a one month break for Ramadan and will resume in mid-June.

PADS: SCC PADS 3-3 TOMMY SMITH ALL STARSA testimonial/70th birthday game was recently played for ex-Pads Legend, Tommy Smith, with the match ending in an entertaining draw, with Tommy converting penalties for both sides. The teams then enjoyed a number of social drinks at the Dempsey Bar and later headed back to the Club to continue the celebrations. Well done, Tommy!

SECTION TOUR TO ELS GOLF COURSE30TH & 31ST May 2019 | DesaruAn outing of unique SCC Golf Camaraderie, Fun & Merry Making.

13 Lucky SCC golfers set out in four minivans from SCC to ELS Golf Course @ Desaru on the dot of 9am. We had a nice breakfast stop over before we hit the Pasir Gudang Highway and enjoyed a spot of local durian tasting to boot.

The Ocean Course was almost exclusive for SCC use when we teed off in a slight afternoon drizzle. 2 x 4 ball flights with a bumper 5 ball flight bringing up the rear.

This Ernie ELS designed course was a delight to play on with fairways so wide, one could tee off with your eyes closed and still not go OB. Fairway and Green sand bunkers were well spaced out although the greens were, generally, rather fast with a few wet spot pockets at some holes..

A certain flight, no names mentioned, created a new ELS Course Record by polishing off 1 crate of beer over 18 holes as an appetizer and then proceeded to wash down a few more buckets of beer at the 19th hole and at dinner before heading off to our hotel where another copious round of (hic!) merrymaking was enjoyed under the stars at the open terrace.

We had a morning tee-off at the Vijay Singh designed Valley Course the next day. We were warned that this was a punishing course. Narrow fairways, water everywhere and loft greens protected with so many sand bunkers, it felt like we were playing golf in a sand quarry! The scorching morning sun burned a blister on many of us until a shocking electric thunderstorm spewed its wrath on us for 15 minutes almost at Hole No. 8.

Rain-soaked but still brave SCC golfers, we returned to our last hole and played and continued our game while the midday sun started to burn again and the rising steam from the ground made the golf course a sauna.

We went for broke to finish 18 holes. Many of us enjoyed great value for money golf per stroke as we carded a heck of a lot more than our Handicap permitted number of stokes.

A NITE WITH MATTHEWFriday 2nd August 2019 | SCC Padang Restaurant & Gilmour RoomWe expect another sell-out evening with our Singapore Cowboys Matthew and the Mandarins. Please book early as we can only accommodate a limited number at the Padang. An open bar and a sumptuous spread will be served at the Gilmour.

SCC ANNUAL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP 2019Thursday 29th August 2019 | Sentosa, Serapong CourseThis is our Golf Section’s annual marquee event. We will be hosting this year’s annual with a 1300hr Shotgun start at Sentosa’s Serapong Course with after-game Cocktails and Dinner at the SCC Padang & Gilmour.

This year’s Annual Golf and Dinner is heavily subsidized by the Golf Section at $280 per Section Member Golfer. We are putting our Section funds to optimal use for Section Members and we look forward to your usual strong support.

Smiling before we hit the Valley Course.

When pre-season started in January with the season starting in the middle of February, many thought, “Boy we are starting pre-season late”. The Ladies 1s were eager to step it up this term after finishing 3rd in the league last term but recovering with a run of fine wins in the 2018 Women’s Liga, the 2018 National Indoor and the captivating SCC International 6s Cup win.

However pitch availability was a killer and the Ladies went about preparing in disjointed fashion with half training on Wednesdays and the other half on Tuesdays. They stuttered in their opener against Vanquishers but came home 3-0 winners, a crucial win to get the ball rolling. Bolstered by the addition of Lea Hartmann and Abigail Rhodes (from the Dutch Hoofdklasse and English National League respectively) and the return of both Rachel Flynn and Lauren Warner from their motherly duties, the team was looking more settled than their slow preparations suggested.

The Men’s 1s in the meantime were already two times defending champs after successfully defending their 2nd crown last season to make it three. They were eager to make it three on the trot, very few have achieved this feat if in fact at all.

Under player-coach Ken Forbes’ watchful eyes, the pre-season started with all the probables, the potentials and the trialists. The team was constantly trimmed until the final 25 were selected and some players had to be asked to play in the 2s this season but with the welcome of training along the 1s throughout the season. We had bumper numbers for all our games and many a times resting players due to oversubscription was the norm.

The season started against last season’s runners’ up Eagles and we got off to a dream start and claimed a handsome 3-0 win. ORA were next up; they had beaten us last season and looked well prepared. Despite dominating the game and going into the half 2-1 up we lost our concentration and ORA put away penalty corners to win 4-2 to take a big step towards wresting the title from us.

Forbes tightened the screws at training and things were getting better as the Men’s went onto to win their next 10 games in a row to win the title by 2 points. We of course beat ORA along the way to claim our 3rd title on the trot and 4th in 5 years. It is noteworthy that, like in 2017, we also scored another penalty corner after the hooter this season to win a game against Jansenites.

The Ladies in the meantime were cruising and put away Crescent 6-0, Hollandse Club 3-1, Jansenites 2-0, Vijayanti 14-1 and came

up against the National Team laden Team HI (who were formerly known as Project Vaults). Always staying step ahead of Team HI, we finally broke the deadlock with a Lea Hartmann penalty corner drag flick. Having a Club social the night before may not have been a good idea at this stage as fatigue set in and we couldn’t defend our own “D” in the final minute and Team HI equalised with seconds to go.

To compound this setback, we went onto to lose to the Hollandse Club after 2 useful big wins over Vanquishers and Tornados. The defeat cast a huge shadow on the Ladies title pursuit, but the girls regrouped, came and trained together and delivered the crucial win over Jansenites and then, in order to gain a superior goal difference, defeated Vijayanti 27-1 enroute to winning their 6th title before the final game against Team HI. We lost that game 2-1 but won the title on goal difference, we were +72 and Jansenites +36.

The Men before their crucial game against Jansenites picked up the Dutch Woodenshoe title, thus making this yet another Double-double.

Following a successful pre-season, with the Hawks being crowned SCC League Div 1 Champions and the Eagles narrowly beaten in the play-off match to come second in the Div 3 League, the Section turned its attention to preparation for the upcoming National Leagues. Led by Club Coach Eric Lee, training has provided an opportunity for the Section to re-group and focus on improving core skills and trialling new player and team combinations.

Excellent attendance and a continued influx of new players has led to four squads being entered into the National League, our strongest representation for several years. A big core group of these squads are our junior players with a whopping 22 junior players representing the Section across the four squads. The strength of the squads this year is extremely high and a massive congratulations to all players selected to represent the club.

One week into Nationals both the Hawks and Ospreys got off to a winning start; the Eagles drew a hard fought match and the Kites, our newest team brimming with development players, narrowly lost against a strong NZ Moa team.

Off the court the Section continues to thrive. To celebrate the success of the SCC League, we hosted an end-of-season party and awards ceremony in the Gilmour Room for all teams in the League. With a theme of “Glitz and Glam”, it was a chance for everyone to dress up, put court rivalry aside and enjoy an evening filled with champagne and prizes. A fantastic night was had by all and thanks goes to the SCC Social Committee for their hard

work in organising. Always looking for new places to enjoy Netball fun, two teams - one opens and one U23 - spent a sunny and sweaty day at Sentosa in early May for the annual beach netball tournament and a few other various tournaments coming up.

On the recent tour to Bangkok, our touring team the SCC Flamingos had a slightly unlucky start but rallied on, eventually emerging Bowl winners. As always, the ever-popular fancy dress after party proved to be a smashing 70s hit!

We are actively recruiting new Members and so if you want to get fit and have (lots of) fun, we want YOU! Get in touch with us at [email protected]

SPORTS

After the success of Ladies Day on 23 February 2019, the SCC Rugby Section did not maintain its momentum into its finals campaign.

On 16 March – now known as ‘Black Saturday’ – the Lions, Tankards and Prems all went into the weekend as favourites and then each proceeded to lose their semi-final. Our vets team – the Growlers – also suffered from the semi-final curse and went down against the eventual winners Bucks Stags on 1 June.

We did not manage to repeat the success of last season where the 1st XV won the SRU Men’s Premiership for the first time in 21 years. It was a disappointing result across the grades and we know the boys will be back with a vengeance next season – and will go into pre-season training hungrier than ever.

Since the end of the playing season, there have been some new developments. After three hugely successful years at the helm Sam Sharpe has hung the boots up as Convenor of the Section. A tremendous knock – raise the bat Sam!

A new Committee was sworn in at the Rugby Section AGM on 15 May 2019. With a mixture of continuity and change, the newly elected Committee is:

• Convenor – Henry Winter

• Treasurer – James Drudy

• Captain – Murray Wyllie

• Secretary – Jeremy Bird

• JSM Representative – Bryan Lim

• Social Secretary – Jack Whiskin

We also have had an additional injection of talent into the broader Section Committee, led by Matthew Head who has been appointed as our new Director of Rugby.

Administration aide, and although the regular season has ended, that does not mean there has been no rugby!

Singapore played host to the Global Rapid Rugby Showcase Series, where the Singapore-based Asia Pacific Dragons – who regularly trained on the Padang with the SCC Rugby Section – played matches against the Western Force and the South China Dragons. Our very own Declan Martens picked up his first cap for the Asia Pacific Dragons on 12 April 2019 against a Western Force side stacked with international players.

The SCC was also well represented in the Singapore National side – with Peter McFeely, Michael Oliver, Marah Ishraf, Nick Yau and Declan Martens all selected to play. After beating the hosts – Chinese Taipei – on 1 June 2019, the national side narrowly lost 29-21 to the Philippines in the Asia Rugby Championship Division 1 final.

On 15 June 2019, our touring side, the SCC Nomads – captained by the indefatigable Adam Waise – is taking on the Hanoi Dragons in what will be a sweltering encounter in northern Vietnam.

The SCC 7s have also been training hard in the lead up to the SCC Rugby Sevens – which is set to electrify the Padang on the weekend of 9-10 November 2019.

Suffice to say, we have a lot on the horizon and plenty to look forward to!

Singapore National Squash League In recent months, our players have been kept busy with the weekly National Squash league matches. SCC has traditionally been a strong contender in the league, and this year, SCC is looking to keep up the good performance, fielding a team for every grade in the squash league.

Last year, SCC emerged as the winner in the Mens A grade and Mens B grade divisions. This year’s competition has been intense but our teams have thus far done promisingly well. As of the second week of June, the SCC Mens B grade team, Mens E grade team and Ladies Division 2 team remained in the top position of their respective league tables. With many matches yet to be played and the close margin between the teams, this season will be an exciting one to watch!

HKFC friendly on 8th June SCC hosted a friendly match in June when a team of players from the Hong Kong Football Club were in town. The games on a Saturday afternoon were followed by dinner and drinks, and the promise of a rematch when the SCC team next heads to Hong Kong on a squash tour.

Intersection Games The Squash Section came in second in the recently concluded Intersection Snooker and Pool tournament, losing 2-1 to the Billiards & Snooker Section. A fantastic showing by our Squash Section representatives!

The last few months have been quite exiting for the Tennis section. In March and April we had the Interclub Singles league. Our Mens team fought hard and managed to secure a respectable 3rd place in the B division. Unfortunately the semifinals were played over the Easter break which meant that quite a number of our players were away! On the Ladies side, it was business as usual with the Ladies A team coming home with the title. They dominated throughout the season and made the Club proud with another trophy to their growing cabinet! In total the Club fielded five Mens teams and the one Ladies team in the singles league which was a record in terms of participation.

The Section has also seen a number of Junior Sports Members (JSM) join us in the last few months on both the mens and ladies sides. Most of these youngsters are playing at a very high level and they have manged to put together some stellar performances in the national tournaments that the Section can be proud of. Of note is Joshua Cheng (13 years old) who reached the recent National doubles tournament final with a fellow incoming JSM, Aneish Sawney, and his sister Clare Cheng who featured in the Junior Fed Cup for Singapore which was held in Sri Lanka. Brendan Hendrata (another 13 year old) reached the U16 National Singles Tournament final. The future certainly bodes well for the Section!

The Section also organised a tour to Bangkok from the 26th to the 28th of April in which our Mens, Ladies and Social teams played against the Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC). The matches were competitive with both sides fighting tooth and nail to emerge victorious. However after a few hours of toil in the sun, RBSC won the final match to result in a tie. Happy with the fairness of the result, both sides retired for a round of beers and some unwinding. We’re planning another tour this year and hopefully will get even better participation than the 10 individuals who joined us in Bangkok. Watch this space!

Lastly and importantly, the Section remains committed to providing opportunities for our Members to enjoy the sport they love, despite the Club courts being closed until September due to the National Day preparations. We have arranged for a temporary home at the Savitar tennis courts located at the Fairmont Hotel, a venue that boasts six courts in total (four artificial clay and two artificial grass). Any Section Member can go online to the Savitar portal to book the courts and are reminded to follow the instructions in the circular that went out in late April when doing so. We’re also continuing with the traditional Friday social as well as the monthly Makan Kechil and hope to see you there!

From top: Joshua Cheng and Aneish Sawney STA open doubles finalists; Michael Eves facing a rather tall order during the Interclub Singles League; Emilie and Nat having a blast on the RBSC grass courts; SCC Mens Team on the Bangkok Tour (bottom left).

About Guo PeiAlmost two decades before Rihanna wore the now-iconic yellow cape to the Met Gala in 2015, she was already the designer of choice for high society and the political elite at home in China.

In recent years, her Chinese bridal line has entered the mainstream, favoured by celebrities like Angelababy. In 2016, Guo Pei became the first China-born-and-trained fashion designer to be invited to join the esteemed Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. That year, she was also named one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People”. Her works have been shown in museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Silk Museum of China, the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, and the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta.
