Happy New Year!

May The Lord bless you and keep you.

May The Lord let His face shine upon you.

May The Lord grant you His peace. Amen.

Thank you to all who generously donated their time and talent to help decorate our Church, AAC and Parish Center for Christmas.

Thank you to the various Ministries of Saint Leo’s who constantly go over

and above to help make Saint Leo “the Great”

Thank you to those who advertise in our Bulletin. Without them, we would not be able to provide you with a Bulletin.

Please support them throughout the year.

Thank you to all who helped out in any way over this past year.

Mostly, thank you to YOU, the Parishioners of Saint Leo the Great Church whose generous support of our Church and School helps shape

“young souls” and enables the hungry to be fed, the naked to be clothed, and the homeless given food and shelter.

Deus Caritas Est – God is love!

God Bless Us All!

Wishing you a very pleasant Sunday and year ahead.

Happy New Year!

News Around the Diocese

QUOTES FROM POPE JOHN PAUL II on Love & Marriage

Authentic love is not a vague sentiment or a blind passion. It is an inner attitude that involves the whole human being. It is looking at others, not to use them but to serve them. It is the ability to rejoice with those who are rejoicing and to suffer with those who are suffering. It is sharing what one possesses so that no one may continue to be deprived of what he needs. Love, in a word, is the gift of self. (John Paul II - February 13th Angelus Prayer, Vatican City, 1994)

BLESSING FOR THE NEW YEAR

On New Year's Eve or New Year's Day, the household gathers at the table or at its Christmas

tree or manger scene. Many people make New Year's Day a day of prayer for peace. The calendar

of the new year may be held during the blessing. All make the sign of the cross. +

Let us praise the Lord of days and seasons and years, saying: Glory to God in the highest!

ALL: And peace to His people on earth! Our lives are made of days and nights, of seasons

and years, for we are part of a universe of suns and moons and planets. We mark ends and we make

beginnings and, in all, we praise God for the grace and mercy that fill our days.

Listen to the words of the book of Genesis: "God said, 'Let there be lights in the dome of the

sky, to separate day from night. Let them mark the fixed times, the days and the years, and serve as

luminaries in the dome of the sky, to shed light upon the earth.' And so it happened: God made the two great lights, the greater one to govern the day, and the lesser one to govern the night; and He made the stars. God set them in the dome of the sky, to shed

light upon the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness.

God saw how good it was. Evening came, and morning followed—the fourth day."

Genesis 1:14-19. The family's Bible may be used for an alternate reading such as Psalm 90:1-4.

The Word of the Lord. ALL: Thanks be to God.

After a time of silence, members of the household offer prayers of thanksgiving for the past year,

And of intercession for the year to come. In conclusion, all join hands for the Lord's prayer. Let us now pray for God's blessing in the new year. After a short silence, parents may place their hands

on their children in blessing as the leader says: Remember us, 0 God; from age to age be our

Comforter. You have given us the wonder of time, blessings in days and nights, seasons and years.

Bless Your children at the turning of the year and fill the months ahead with the bright hope that is ours in the coming of Christ. You are our God,

living and reigning, for ever and ever. ALL: Amen.

Let us bless the Lord. All make the sign of the cross. +

ALL: Thanks be to God.

Mary, Mother of God ~ January 1, 2017

Does it surprise me that the first to come and encounter Christ were lowly shepherds. They were certainly not the persons I would expect to greet a new born baby. Obviously, they accepted the good news and then reported it to others. We who know the Bethlehem story so well, might not have even bothered to go to the cave where Christ was born. We might like the shepherds, have just returned to the night watch guarding themselves and their flocks. Obviously their story moved others as well. At the same time Mary both treasured and reflected, sometimes the scriptures say ‘pondered’ or weighed what she knew, saw and heard. How she felt may best be known by the mother of a newborn. It might be fitting to sit quietly like Mary and reflect upon the events. Christmas comes and goes so fast that we might overlook the great outpouring of the Father in giving us a needed Savior, and the role

model of Mary treasuring and reflecting. May we treasure the coming of the Lord.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD January 8, 2016

First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Jerusalem is extolled as a place of glory and splendor because the Lord has come to His own city. Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Paul tells the Ephesians that his special mission is to make the Gentiles co-heirs with the Jews in Christ — “members of the same body and sharers of the promise.” Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Herod learns that Wise Men from the East are searching for the newly born Christ Child. He instructs them to find the Child and to report His whereabouts to him. The Wise Men follow a star to the place where Mary and Jesus are and offer the Child gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They do not return to Herod but follow another route to their own country.

HIS WORD TODAY

“The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger; once they saw, they understood what had been told them concerning this child. All who heard of it were astonished at the report… Mary treasured all these things and reflected on them in her heart.”

Prayer For Strength and Wisdom

Grant me the strength from day to day to bear what burdens come my way.

Grant me throughout this bright New Year more to endure and less to fear.

Help me live that I may be from spite and petty malice free.

Let me not bitterly complain when cherished hopes of mine prove vain,

or spoil with deeds of hate and rage some fair tomorrow's spotless page. Lord, as the days shall come and go

in courage let me stronger grow. Lord, as the new day dawns today

help me to put my faults away. Let me be big in little things;

grant me the joy which friendship brings. Keep me from selfishness and spite;

let me be wise in what is right. A happy New Year! Grant that I

may bring no tear to any eye. When this New Year in time shall end

let it be said I've played the friend, have lived and loved and labored here,

and made of it a happy year.
