Modern Heidelberg can trace its beginnings to the 5th century
when the village Bergheim ("Mountain Home") is first mentioned in
documents dated to 769 AD. Bergheim now lies in the middle of
modern Heidelberg.

important Renaissance structures north of the Alps.
We walked 300 steps up the hillside!
The earliest castle structure was built before AD 1214 and later
expanded into 2 castles circa 1294
