“The 50 days from the Sunday of the Resurrec"on to Pentecost Sunday are celebrated in joy and exulta"on as one
Feast Day, indeed as one great Sunday. These are the days above all others in which the Alleluia is sung” (universal
norms on the Liturgical Year and the calendar, no. 22). Pentecost, “The Fi'ieth” Day a'er Easter is one of the three
most important feasts of the Church Liturgical Year. We know Christmas is one of the three. It’s easy to get excited
about the birth of a baby, especially when the baby is God’s Son and His Mother is Blessed Virgin Mary. We know East-
er is important as we celebrate Jesus’ victory over death. Our Patron Saint Paul says that, if there were no Resurrec-
"on, your faith would be in vain and our preaching would be a waste of "me (1 Corrintheans 15:14). Pentecost is the
third most important feast which is the birthday of the Church.
Let me give you a li!le history of Pentecost. The Jews were celebra"ng Pentecost 3,000 years ago and it was called the
Fes"val of Weeks. It was originally a harvest feast on which the first fruits were offered in gra"tude to God. It later
came to be celebrated as the anniversary of the giving of the law of Moses on Mt. Sinai. The people of Israel celebrated
Pentecost on the 50th
day a'er the Jewish Passover. For us Chris"ans, we celebrate Pentecost ten days a'er the Ascen-
sion of Jesus and fi'y days a'er Easter, to commemorate the day the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles and also to
mark the end of the Easter Season. This weekend’s Gospel indicates that in the upper room Jesus breathed on the Dis-
ciples and commissioned them, “receive the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
There are two important things to remember about the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Day. First, is the unity
and universality of the Church as the Holy Spirit enables everyone to communicate and understand the message de-
spite the different languages. The tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9) is reversed. Second, the commissioning by Jesus.
Disciples are given the gi' of the Holy Spirit and sent out to proclaim the Good News.
In the First Reading, the Holy Spirit appeared to the Apostles as tongues of fire, a fire that started burning in them to
proclaim the Good News with courage. They began to proclaim the Gospel in a language understood by all people from
various na"ons. The Spirit of Pentecost is not confined by language of origin, gender, or social-economic status. It is a
universal gi' that reminds us how the Gospel has been proclaimed in every language and place from Jerusalem to eve-
ry corner of the world including Webster where life is worth living.
We have received the Holy Spirit and various gi's through the Sacraments of Bap"sm and Confirma"on. The Holy Spirit
guides and inspires each one of us. I have experienced the Holy Spirit working in my life, reminding me what I should
do and say in different situa"ons. Some"mes people come to me experiencing difficul"es in life some even with de-
pression and suicidal thoughts. I listen a!en"vely and ask a few ques"ons. As we talk an idea comes into my mind
that is just the right thing to say to the person. I end up asking myself, “where did that idea come from?” As I see a
person who came with tears and hopelessness leaving my office with a smile and hope to live. I know it’s not my coun-
seling knowledge and skills or pastoral experience but the Holy Spirit working with and through me.
The Holy Spirit makes us use the seven gi's (wisdom, understanding, counsel, for"tude or courage, knowledge, piety,
and fear of the Lord, Isaiah 11:2-3) to do the mission Jesus has entrusted to us with fruits of the Holy Spirit (charity,
peace, joy, pa"ence, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control and chas"ty, Gala-
"ans 5:22-23). Jesus desires that we should live as missionary disciples, exercising those gi's in our everyday life. We
are called to serve others and build up Christ’s Body, the Church through words and deeds. When this happens, we are
real “witnesses” of Jesus Christ. Pope Francis has o'en reminded us about sharing the joy of the Gospel. Today as we
celebrate Pentecost, we invite the Holy Spirit to empower us with those gi's and make us ready to proclaim for-
giveness of sins, peace and joy as we serve the people in need and the Church in various ministries, “knowing that in
the Lord, your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Diocesan Mission Sunday
Today, on Diocesan Mission Sunday, we are filled
with renewed faith as the Holy Sprit comes upon us
and calls each one of us to move beyond our daily
concerns, important as they are, to help the Sisters
of St. Joseph and the Sisters of Mercy bring the
faith to God’s people in Brazil and Chile.
Bishop Salvatore Matano reminds us of our strong
and proud mission tradi"on. The support of our
Diocesan Missionaries by the Church of Rochester is
a great piece of our history.
May we as partners of Christ help to build God’s
kingdom by our prayers and financial gi' today.
Thank you for your generosity.
A special “Thank You” to all the families/parishioners
who helped to keep the coffee brewing in the Jambo Ja-
va Café during Sunday Coffee and Donut season! There
would be no Coffee Hour without you!

Forgiveness: A Guide for Prayer
This is the second of a five-book series called Take and
Receive which provides support and direc"on for pri-
vate as well as group prayer and medita"on. It contains
daily medita"ons centered on the theme of forgiveness;
each day’s prayer begins with a scriptural passage, and
a suggested approach to the day’s reflec"on. When the
authors were conduc"ng parish days of renewal
throughout Minnesota, they became aware of the hun-
ger experienced by many people for guidance in devel-
oping a personal rela"onship with God. They have de-
veloped a variety of approaches to daily prayer which
can be used to deepen (or begin) the integra"on of per-
sonal prayer with life circumstances. (Call No. 242-BER)
