THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Priest: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Priest: Let us pray.

Priest: Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and

nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout

the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the

Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

People: Amen.

THE READING Read by Annette Anfinrud. Acts 2:1-21

Please be seated.

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place.

And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and

it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire,

appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were

filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit

gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem.

And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one

heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they

asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear,

each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents

of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and

Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from

Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we

hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed,

saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They

are filled with new wine."

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of

Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I

say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the

morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: `In the last days it

will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons

and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and

your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in

those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show

portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and

smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before

the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the

name of the Lord shall be saved.' "

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 104:25-35, 37 James Turle

(1802–1882)

Chanted by the St. John’s Choir

25 O Lord, how manifold are your works!

in wisdom you have made them all;

the earth is full of your creatures.

26 Yonder is the great and wide sea

with its living things too many to number,

creatures both small and great.

27 There move the ships,

and there is that Leviathan,

which you have made for the sport of it.

28 All of them look to you

to give them their food in due season.

29 You give it to them; they gather it;

you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

30 You hide your face, and they are terrified;

you take away their breath,

and they die and return to their dust.

31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created;

and so you renew the face of the earth.

32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever;

may the Lord rejoice in all his works.

33 He looks at the earth and it trembles;

he touches the mountains and they smoke.

34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;

I will praise my God while I have my being.

35 May these words of mine please him;

I will rejoice in the Lord.

37 Bless the Lord, O my soul.

Hallelujah!

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Tone VI

Please stand.

Alleluia. Come, Holy Ghost, and fill the hearts of thy faithful people: And kindle in them the fire of thy love. Alleluia.

THE HOLY GOSPEL John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

Please remain standing.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to his disciples, ”When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you

from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on

my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the

beginning.

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But

now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you

going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do

not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to

you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and

righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about

righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer;

about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the

Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on

his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things

that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and

declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will

take what is mine and declare it to you.

Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM Please remain seated.

If you would like to make an offering, you may do so online at stjohns-dc.org/give, texting "stjdc"

to 73256, or you may place your offering in the plate located by the front pew immediately before

Ev’ry time I feel the Spirit Negro Spiritual

arr. Moses Hogan

(1957–2003)

Sung by the St. John’s Choir

Ev’ry time I feel the Spirit moving in my heart, I will pray.

Yes, ev’ry time I feel the Spirit moving in my heart, I will pray.

On the mountain, my Lord spoke,

out His mouth came fire and smoke.

Down in the valley, on my knees

asked my Lord have mercy please. Refrain.

Jordan river, chilly and cold,

chills the body not the soul.

All around me looked so fine,

asked my Lord if all was mine. Refrain.

Ain’t but one train on this track,

runs to heaven and right back.

St. Peter waitin’ at the gate,

said come on sinner, don’t be late. Refrain.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Please stand.

Priest: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Priest: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Priest: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to

you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. In fulfillment of his true promise, the Holy Spirit

came down on this day from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them

and to lead them into all truth; uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession

of one faith, and giving to your Church the power to serve you as a royal

priesthood, and to preach the Gospel to all nations.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with

all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of

your Name:

SANCTUS AND BENEDICTUS (from Mass in E) Jeffrey Smith

Sung by all.

Please remain standing.

Priest: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and,

when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your

mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to

live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your

will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ

took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his

disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this

for the remembrance of me.”

Page 10: T P HE DAY OF ENTECOST May 23, 2021 · 11:00 E

10

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to

them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant,

which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink

it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of

faith:

Priest and People:

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

Priest: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise

and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you

these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of

your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us

also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity,

constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy

of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now

and for ever.

People: Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Priest and People:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the

kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Priest: Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!

Priest: The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ

died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

MUSIC AT THE COMMUNION Please be seated. An usher will guide you by pew to come forward for communion.

Anthem Veni Creator, Spiritus Michael John Trotta

(b. 1978)

Sung by the St. John’s Choir

Veni, Creator Spiritus,

mentes tuorum visita,

imple superna gratia

quae tu creasti pectora.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus,

reple tuorum corda fidelium,

et tui amoris in eis ignem accende.

Emitte Spiritum tuum et creabuntur.

Et renovabis faciem terrae.

Come, Creator Spirit,

visit your souls,

fill with heavenly grace

the hearts you have created.

Come, holy Spirit,

fill the hearts of your faithful,

and ignite them with your love.

Send out your Spirit and they will be created.

And you will renew the face of the earth.

All persons, including children, are welcome to receive Holy Communion with us. During this

time, our practice will be to offer the bread and the wine following health guidelines. An usher will

provide communicants with hand sanitizer before the priest (who has washed his or her hands

immediately prior) places a blessed wafer into your hands. Take a few steps, remove your mask,

and consume the wafer. Blessed wine in small paper cups on a tray will be offered by a lay server.

After drinking the wine, place the cup in the basket at the end of the line.

Receiving the bread only is a valid way to share in Holy Communion. Parents may decide if their

children receive the bread and/or wine. Children may instead signal their desire to be blessed by

the priest by crossing their arms over their chest.

ST. JOHN’S CHURCH, LAFAYETTE SQUARE

COVENANT FOR REGATHERING IN WORSHIP

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, I promise, with God’s help and to the best of my ability, to abide by

the guidelines of the Diocese of Washington for participation in the life of my congregation according to the

regathering phase in which my congregation is authorized to carry out its mission and ministry. I understand

that the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is highly contagious, and there is a risk of infection that is

beyond the control of the church in spite of precautions that are being taken. I will make my own decision as

to my safety attending services, and for the safety of children and others in my care.

In fulfillment of our Baptismal Covenant, I will:

Love my neighbor as myself

• Wear a mask or scarf over my nose and mouth at all times in church buildings, except momentarily to

receive the sacrament or lead worship through an assigned speaking part.

• Only attend worship and receive communion if I am healthy and non-symptomatic with the novel

coronavirus or any other transmittable disease that could compromise the health of another congregant;

Respect the dignity of every human being

• Make no physical contact with people beyond the members of my own household.

• Maintain a six foot or more distance from others in the congregation. Respect any requests for distance,

masking, cleaning, to ensure the safety and comfort level of others, even as restrictions are reduced.

• Immediately notify Church officials if I become symptomatic, if I am diagnosed as positive for the

coronavirus, or if I believe I was at risk of infection when I attended the church.

Seek and serve Christ in all people

• Trust and support the decisions of our congregational leaders.

• Stay connected with others in my community by telephone, email, video chat, or mail.

I understand that although St. John’s Church is taking precautions to avoid the spread of the novel coronavirus

that causes COVID-19, attending services nevertheless involves some risk of infection by the novel

coronavirus and resulting injury. I voluntarily and knowingly accept that risk and waive any claims that I

might have as a result.

ABOUT TODAY’S EDUCATION FOR

MINISTRY GRADUATION

Today we celebrate the graduation of three members

of St. John’s parish, Sylvia Martin-Estes, Martha

Spieker, and Matthew Taylor, from the Education for

Ministry (EfM) program. Since its inception in 1975,

more than 100,000 people have participated in this

vital program. EfM groups meet once a week for 36

weeks in nearly every diocese of The Episcopal

Church, in six provinces of the Anglican

Communion, and some in virtual classrooms with

participants from across the globe. An EfM group

has been meeting weekly at St. John’s for over twenty

years.

Sylvia, Martha, and Matthew have spent the past four

years in the company of other St. John’s EfM

participants reading through the Hebrew Bible and

the New Testament, a history of Christianity, and a

collection of contemporary theology books. Each

week the entire group gathers for worship, sharing,

discussion, and reflection. We’ve begun to think

theologically, reflect faithfully, and speak civilly

when confronted by beliefs and principles sometimes

in opposition to our own. (That’s something we can

all appreciate in today’s world!) Education for

Ministry fosters the means to articulate our faith,

shape that faith into action, and become involved in

ministries not only in our parish, but also in our

greater community.

If you’d like to learn more about Education for

Ministry visit https://efm.sewanee.edu. A new group

of participants will start the program at St. John’s this

fall. Contact Carolyn Crouch at 202-271-421 or

[email protected] if you are interested

in joining or simply want to chat about what EfM is

all about.

roster for reading. We will meet at the lectern in the Sanctuary.

For more information, please contact the Rev. Savannah

Ponder at [email protected].

JOIN THE GREETERS COMMITTEE

The Greeters Committee offers the first line of welcome to all

who attend our services. In this transition time, when we are

limited in how many can be present inside the church, greeters

also ask worshipers to sign in so that we can track attendance.

Being a greeter is a wonderful way to get to know your fellow

St. John’s parishioners and to offer visitors a friendly welcome.

If you are interested in joining the Greeters Committee,

please contact Peter Odom at [email protected]

or Eleanor Odom at [email protected].

LISTEN AGAIN TO SUNDAY SERMONS

If you missed a Sunday at St. John’s Church or would like to

listen again to past sermons or speaker series, you can visit the

St. John’s website and click on the “Media” tab at the top of the

page to listen. You can also find past sermons by searching for

“St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square” in the Podcast app on

your device.

Welcome!

AT ST. JOHN’S CHURCH, we believe Christ is calling us to be a renewed church in a changing world. Empowered

by the Spirit of God, we respond to Jesus’ call as we deepen our bond with Christ through worship, become a

community where all are accepted, and work together as laity and clergy to do God’s work in the world.

ST JOHN’S WAS ORGANIZED IN 1815 to serve as a parish church for Episcopalians residing in the neighborhoods

in the west end of the District of Columbia. Its cornerstone was laid on September 14, 1815, and it was consecrated

on December 27, 1816. Beginning with James Madison, every person who has held the office of President of the

United States has attended a service at the church. Several Presidents have been communicants. Thus, St. John’s

is often referred to as the “Church of the Presidents.” Pew 54 is the President’s Pew. The architect of the church

was Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who assisted in the rebuilding of the U.S. Capitol and the White House after the

War of 1812. Twenty-five of the stained glass windows in St. John’s were designed and executed by artisans of

the noted Lorin firm of Chartres, France.

ST JOHN’S WEBSITE WWW.STJOHNS-DC.ORG has up-to-date information about the Church including the

weekly calendar, the Sunday service schedule, Speaker Series speakers and topics, the music calendar and

newsworthy events.
