Chorus, Region 19

Britt-Heléne Bonnedahl defies cate-gorization. This striking Swedish grand-mother, who directs the dynamicRönninge Show Chorus from Region 32,specializes in innovation and education. She is a true trailblazer who has nurturedtwo international champion quartets –theGROWING GIRLS in 1989 and SALTin 2007– serves on the international fac-ulty, is a highly sought-after coach andexpert in vocal production, and hashelped make the dream of worldwideharmony come true for countless womenin Europe and beyond. For helpingchange the thoughts of everyone shemeets from a language of limitation to anattitude of affirmation, Britt-HeléneBonnedahl is the recipient of the 2009President’s Lifetime AchievementAward from Sweet AdelinesInternational.

Britt-Heléne started in barbershopmusic at the urging of her husband, Lars-Erik, in 1976. While she had beenaround music all her life, primarilyinspired by performing in choirs and

instrumentally in church organizations, itwas Lars-Erik who encouraged his wifeto explore the harmony-laden art form ofbarbershop.

“We were both singers in a chamberchoir and touring with that group,” Britt-Heléne said. “The guys started to sing(barbershop) arrangements that some-one’s relative had brought home from theUnited States.”

That early introduction to barber-shop music didn’t exactly send her run-ning to create a quartet of her own, however.

“I’m ever-so grateful that he was sopersistent in getting me to sing, because Iwas not the most supporting wife whenhe rehearsed at our home with his quar-tet,” she said with a laugh.

A trip to California and the MissionValley Chorus put Britt-Heléne on thepath she follows now, 30+ years later.

“In 1976 we traveled to SPEBSQSA(now Barbershop Harmony Society) con-vention in San Francisco,” she recalled.“We all were singers, but only the guyssang barbershop.

“Sally Matthew, the tenor in a suc-cessful quartet called SUNDANCE, was the

host to one of theSwedish couplesand she invited usgirls to come to arehearsal withMission Valley.”

There’s noth-ing like that firstimmersion into bar-bershop at a SweetAdelines rehearsal, particularly whenyour guest happensto stumble onto achorus right on thecusp of somethingextraordinary. Suchwas Britt-Heléne’sgood fortune thatevening.

“I was placedin the tenor sectionbeside Sally,”Britt-Helénerecalls. “Seeing(Mission Valleydirector) GloriaSandstrom dance infront of the chorus

gave me such an excited experience. Iwas hooked!"

A few months later, Mission Valleywould become just the fourthInternational champion chorus in SweetAdelines history. And Britt-Helénestarted to share some of her trademarkwit and sparkle with her new musicalcommunity.

“After the trip to San Francisco andvisiting Mission Valley, we started aquartet called ‘BEAUTIFUL SCREAMERS,’ aname we thought was so funny,” shelaughs. (Note to Britt-Heléne: it still is.)“Meeting with Americans later weunderstood that it was not as funny as wethought.”

Back home, Britt-Heléne’s friendsgot right to work building a foothold forSweet Adelines in Europe. A member ofher quartet, Maria Ovesson, helped foundthe first chorus in Sweden, The TelgeChapter. Britt-Heléne joined in shortorder, and was present onstage at theRoyal Albert Hall in London, England, when Telge received its charter. Shestayed with the chorus for six years, eventually becoming its assistant direc-tor. In 1982, Britt-Heléne, Maria

January 2010 23

Ovesson and Ingegerd Lindgren (motherof GROWING GIRLS tenor Malin) foundedthe Rönninge Show Chorus. She wasimmediately installed as director, a posi-tion she has held ever since.

Britt-Heléne is not the onlyBeautiful Screamer to go onto fame inSweet AdelinesInternational. MariaOvesson receivedthe Ann GoochAward in Hawaii in2008.

It didn’t takelong for Britt-Heléneand Rönninge tobecome major play-ers on theInternational stage. They made theirdebut with a solidfifth-place finish inMiami in 1989.Since then,Rönninge has placedoutside the top fiveonly once, includinga second-placemedal in 1995 thatwas oh-so-close tothe coveted gold.

“When it comesto memories, ofcourse New Orleans is very special,”Britt-Heléne said. “That semifinal whenwe actually won was magical. We oftenrefer to that as a magic moment.

“(Falling short) of the gold to Rich-Tone by 13 points was no big deal. Wehad already won. We were not preparedfor more,” she said.

Perhaps Rönninge’s most memo-rable performance for its American audi-ence came in 2001. Just a month afterthe 9/11 terrorist attacks, Rönningemembers traveled to the United States tocompete in Portland, Ore. Nearly one-third of Rönninge’s members decidednot to go to Portland, and those whoventured to America that year faced thedaunting prospect of a package rebuiltand revoiced in just a few days.

“All the trauma in leaving 30 mem-bers at home after the attacks and mak-ing the trip was so emotional and boundus so together, we never had any prob-lems with the changes (to their competi-tion performances),” Britt-Heléne said.

“It was the trip with fewer complaintsthan we’ve ever had. We were like lov-ing sisters, all the time prepared for‘whatever happens we can handle it.’”

Minus 30 members and wanting toshare with their American friends howstrongly united they were with the still-

aching nation, Britt-Heléne andRönninge used their finals performanceto offer a moving anthem to peace withWe Are The World. The performanceproved cathartic for the singers and theiraudience. Very few looked on –or per-formed– with dry eyes.

“Just a couple of days before, I wasdevastated that the chorus sounded sodifferently (without their missing 30members), but it all came together at ashow with Mission Valley” shortlybefore the Portland convention, Britt-Heléne said. “We felt our mission was,1) to not give up because we felt the ter-rorists then would feel successful; and 2)to show you how much we love you.(We felt) if we could support you just alittle, it would be like paying back a littlefor all help we’ve gotten throughout theyears.”

Missions accomplished.Britt-Heléne doubtlessly deserves to

be paid back far more than she will everadmit. Outside of Sweet Adelines sheworked for more than 40 years as ateacher. She began in regular class-rooms, but soon was pulled into workingwith children who in Sweden are simply–and accurately– referred to as “special.”

“I went back toschool and became aspecial teacher (forchildren with learningdisabilities and behav-ior problems) and aspeech therapist,” shesaid. Her training as ateacher and her workwith special childrenhas aided RönningeShow Chorus, too.

“My chorus saysthat my professionmakes me a betterdirector since nobodycan ‘bring me out ofcontrol’ and that I amso patient if they don’tget it immediately. As aspecial teacher youalways have to developyour teaching style andbe very flexible other-wise you have no suc-cess at all.”

Britt-Heléne retired from full-timeteaching four years ago, but this

dynamic 64-year-old is a long way fromtaking a seat on the bench. She remainsMaster Director of Rönninge ShowChorus, as well as active in the faculty inRegion 32 and elsewhere around theworld. She began 2010 coaching andteaching in Japan. Think about that for amoment. A Swedish teacher teachingJapanese choruses about singing barber-shop harmony in English. The mindwhirls.

“What I especially appreciate (aboutSweet Adelines) is the willingness tolearn and share,” she said. “Everybodysupports you in whatever area of theorganization you touch. It’s amazing!”

Perhaps the only thing more amaz-ing to Britt-Heléne is her family. Sheand Lars-Erik, have two children, AnnaOhman (of GROWING GIRLS and SALT)and Jonas. Anna and her husband,Richard, (“a wonderful barbershop lead,”Britt-Heléne says) have two children,

Chorus, Region 19

When Hollywood calls, when the spotlight shines and the worldseems to be standing at your doorstep andtrying to push its way inside, the mostimportant thing to remember is where youcome from.

MAxx FACTOR, Sweet Adelines’2010 third-place international quartetmedallists, was one of the stars of NBC’s“The Sing-Off,” a TV show billed as asearch for America’s top a cappella group.Production for the show, which aired inDecember, was unforgettable and nerve-fraying for the four singers fromBaltimore, Md., an extraordinary chal-lenge, and an unexpected blessing. All atonce, they found themselves swept up inan exciting whirlwind while trying to navi-gate the longest three weeks of their musi-cal lives. From being wrangled, wardrobedand styled, to spending 14-hour dayslearning non-barbershop arrangements ofpop songs they had never even heard, thewomen of Maxx Factor got a crash coursein big-budget entertainment, Hollywood-style. They came home exhausted, quite abit savvier about the business side ofshowbiz and a whole lot more grateful fortheir sisters in Sweet AdelinesInternational.

All four are accustomed to bearingdown musically to achieve success. LeadLeslie Wodday is an International quartetchampion with SIGNATURE SOUND (2000),and tenor Molly Plummer, baritone KimHudson and bass Valerie Hadfield-Rasnake have been members of multi-timeInternational chorus medalist Pride ofBaltimore. Together just a bit shy of three

years, they have won Region 19, placedfourth and third internationally, completeda CD and won another nationwide a cap-pella contest, The 2009 HarmonySweepstakes.

And yet …“I have never worked harder in 30

years than I have in “The Sing-Off,”Leslie said. “It was so much work, I can-not even begin to explain it. You willnever fathom the depth (of the effort). You’re always thinking, all right, whatcomes next? What do I have to do now?”

MAxx FACTOR was one of eightgroups from approximately 3,000 entrieschosen for the pilot run of “The Sing-Off.”They were the only barbershop group andthe smallest in number. They wereselected just a few days before traveling toNashville for International competition, and were immediately sworn to secrecy.Despite performing for more than 8,000 oftheir very best friends and to a worldwideWebcast audience with unlimited market-ing potential for the TV show, they could-n’t tell a soul. An NBC film crew evenshot footage backstage during their finalsset, and the quartet had to pretend theydidn’t know why it was there.

The reason for all this subterfuge isinherent to the nature of television. Evenso-called “reality TV” isn’t 100 percentreal. TV is, by necessity, a controlledmedium. It is planned, programmed andscheduled to the fraction of a second.Behind every performer are dozens, maybe even hundreds, of people, from

cooks to cameraoperators to net-work executives.

A show’s producers have the vision, andcarry the burden not only of getting itmade, but making it slick enough to sell toa network.

And those folks you actually see–“the talent”– they don’t have a lot to sayabout any of it.

“We kind of knew going in that wewould be challenged with different typesof arrangements, not necessarily barber-shop,” Val said. “When we got out there,(the producers) wanted a little more con-temporary music, so that made our reper-toire not exactly what they were lookingfor.”

Much like choosing music for SweetAdelines contests, picking songs for “TheSing-Off” was tied up with copyrights andclearances, as well as legal and technicalissues. There were considerations uniqueto the medium and the show’s format –considerations that were not completelywithin MAxx FACTOR’s control.

“They had a custom arranger, PetraHaden, work with us,” Val said. WhileHaden is an accomplished musician andarranger of pop and jazz, “(she) didn’tknow anything about barbershop, didn’tknow how to arrange barbershop,” Valsaid.

Haden was charged with taking asong and turning it around into a learnable, singable product in very little time. “Shehad to take the song, learn it, arrange it,put it on tracks, and get it to us,” Lesliesaid. “And she does it all by singing. Shewould learn the song and sing it, usuallythe melody part. Then she put in anotherharmony part, and gave it to whoever,(then) put in other notes and gave it to

someone else … it really didn’t mat-ter what part you sing, because itwasn’t going to be in your part.”

This all took place in a matterof days. None of the members ofMAxx FACTOR read music, so learn-ing took the form of the four of themin a conference room with fourrecorders and earphones, eachwoman working on different parts ofdifferent songs over and over andover again, breaking to sing together, then more hours of learning. And atany moment they could be inter-rupted by a producer makingchanges of his own.

Welcome to the deep end of theentertainment pool.

For all the competitors, the daysleading up to filming were grueling. They were up and out the door early andstumbled home weary late at night.Production schedules changed constantly, and they were assigned wranglers whotracked their every move to ensure theywould arrive on time and ready for eachwardrobe check, interview, meal, choreog-raphy session, photo shoot, media opportu-nity and on-set rehearsal. The quartettransferred its performing style from the10,000-seat Sommet Center arena inNashville, to the deceptively small stageset of “The Sing-Off.” They learned towork with handheld and earpiece micro-phones and all about camera blocking. They even practiced getting eliminated.

“It takes a lot longer than you think,”

Molly said of the show’s protracted count-down scenes. “Youhave to practicelooking into yourcamera, and youhad to learn whereto stand as thegroups got smaller. They wanted to seeif you needed togive more, but wenever had that problem,” she chuckled.Despite the rehearsals, MAxx FACTOR’ssurprised reactions were always genuine.

“We thought we’d get kicked off afterthe first show,” Leslie laughed. “We wereshocked.”

In Sweet Adelines, compe-titions come up once, some-times twice, a year forInternational-level quartets.Months are spent tweakingevery nuance in two, maybefour, songs. In TV land, not somuch.

“We had to learn fivesongs in a day and a half, andthen they would change themthe day of the show,” Lesliesaid. They sang pop tunes insyncopated arrangements, notthe chord-filled harmonies theirears craved. “There would be‘bum-bums’ for her, and ‘bum-bums’ for her, and then we’dget to filming and (the produc-ers) would change it.”

Frustration occasionally slipped in.

Fatigue frayed everyone’s edges. “Insteadof you guys singing ‘bum-bum-bums,’we’d like you two to harmonize and singthe words now,” said Kim with a wave of

Did you get to keep any of your costumes? Theblack and white suits and the red jackets were ours; wetook them to Los Angeles. The red jacket was plain andthey “blinged” it up with faux jewels. They’re falling off,but we like them so we’ll glue them back on. We didn’tget to keep any of the other outfits, although we hadjust purchased blue jackets that are very similar andwe’ll be blinging those up too. One cool thing was thatthe costumer for the show was Kara Saun, who was therunner-up on the first season of “Project Runway.”

Are you allowed to sing any of the songs fromthe show in your performances? Yes, we areallowed to sing them all as long as they are notincluded on a CD or produced for profit in some way.

Did you have a favorite song, and what was it?We loved them all for different reasons, but of all thesongs we did we would probably have to say the“Beach Boys medley,” that was most like barbershop.

Have any of you been recognized in public? Valworks the retail world and is in the stores constantly. She has been recognized and signed a few autographs.Kim was followed around the grocery store until theperson got up the courage to ask and then she was SOexcited! Just last night we sang the national anthem atthe Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and as soon aswe entered the hallways to approach the court entrancethere were high-pitched screams and “oh my Gods! Doyou know who that is? OMG I can’t believe they’re here! Can you come sing for us?” It happened to be thechoral groups rehearsing in rooms backstage and weentertained them following the anthem ... we were evenasked to come help their quartets.

What was the best thing about being on theshow? All the friends we made, the music we sang, thecloser we got and the more we relied on each other ...NOTHING can beat a sister in song!

Did you get paid to do the show? There was aper diem amount for food and such, and if you made ashow there was a small stipend for being on thatshow. No, we didn’t get thousands of dollars!

You have songs on iTunes now. Will you getmoney if they are downloaded? What aboutepisodes that are downloaded? Do youexpect to get any residuals from your time onthe show? Wow, big questions. No, No, and No... everything we did is theirs.
