A Reflection on Memorial Day by Most Reverend Paul S. Loverde

It is Memorial Day in these United States! Three words capture its significance and purpose: remembrance, gratitude and honor. Surely, we remember all those who have given their lives in the defense of our nation, in the cause of freedom, in the pursuit of justice which leads to true peace. We remember the countless men and women who have fought in wars and in other kinds of armed conflict throughout the history of this nation, from the very beginning to the current times. For most of us, the more recent memories encompass the Second World War and the wars in Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan; others too come in to mind. We remember all who have fallen and pray for them, asking the Lord to give them in His Presence eternal life and peace.

But, we also remember those who have suffered the ravages of war, not with the loss of life, but with bodily injury, like the loss of limbs or illnesses that perdure for the rest of their lives. We remember too those who are enduring emotional or psychological suffering because of what they experienced on the battleground. We must not forget the families of those men and women who were killed in action or who may be still missing in action, or who have been severely injured, bodily or emotionally. These families' members grieve; they suffer. We remember.

As we remember, we express profound gratitude: gratitude for the unselfish sacrifices these men and women have made to God, to country, and to us; gratitude for those who support and assist our veterans and their families; gratitude for the lessons they teach us about generosity even to the giving of one's life, about love of God and country, about securing justice which leads to peace. As we remember and express gratitude, we also honor both those who have died and our veterans who are with us. This is honor we express not only by erecting monuments and memorials, by placing flags on their graves, and by visiting cemeteries, but also by the respect and support we give to their loved ones who remain and to our veterans and their families who live among us; by a sincere word of thank you, by our ongoing prayers, and by our own commitment to seek justice which leads to true and lasting peace.

In Saint John's Gospel, Jesus tells us: "In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world." Earlier he says, "I have told you this so that you have peace in me." Yes, ultimately, in Jesus, we find our peace and our enduring hope. Holding on to His words, we entrust all whom we have remembered today to Him-and ourselves as well. Christ Jesus alone is our peace, our hope and our life! Amen.

Weekly Reflection:

THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH

Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today’s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Stewardship Reflection:

“The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ…” - ROMANS 8:16-17I

If we are heirs to the kingdom of God, shouldn’t we work to build up His kingdom? Shouldn’t we be good stewards of our inheritance, using our time in prayer, our talent in charitable works and our treasure to care for the Church that God has left to us? Our Church is a treasured heirloom from God. Do we treat it that way?

Come Celebrate and Pray for Our Future Priests

The ordination of men to the priesthood and diaconate are beautiful and inspiring events for our entire diocese, and all are welcome to witness them. The Mass of Ordination to the transitional diaconate for seminarians Nicholas Blank, Edouard Guilloux, Sean Koehr, Will Nyce and James Waalkes is Saturday June 2nd, 2018.

The Mass of Ordination to the Priesthood for Deacons Michael Folmar, Nicholas Schierer and Christopher Tipton is Saturday June 9th. Both events are at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More starting at 11:00am. There is also a Holy Hour Vigil with Bishop Burbidge and the seminarians on Friday June 8th at 7:00pm at the Cathedral, followed by a light reception. Come and pray for our future priests!

A Man of His Word

Motive Entertainment has produced a new

documentary film centered on Pope Francis, opening

nationwide on May 18th, 2018. Co-produced by the Vatican's

Office of Communications and directed by German

filmmaker Wim Wenders, "Pope Francis - A Man of His

Word" is a very personal journey with the Holy Father -- a film from him rather than about him, for non-Catholics

as well as for Catholics -- in which he addresses the

audience directly.

College Night Invitation

Attention Class of 2018: The Associates of St. John Bosco invites rising college freshmen to attend a College Night at one of the following parishes:

June 20th—St. Mark's July 2nd—All Saints in Vienna in Manassas

July 18th—Basilica of St. Mary July 25th—St. Mary's in Alexandria in Fredericksburg

College Nights are free to all students and provide resources and support for keeping your Catholic faith when entering college this fall. Catholic student representatives from George Mason, UVA, The University of Mary Washington, William & Mary, Virginia Tech and other private and public schools will be on hand to share their experiences of being a Catholic college student. This is a great opportunity to network with other Catholic students and to receive resources for the transition to college only a few months away. The Nights begin at 7:00pm, and students are encouraged to wear their college t-shirt to the event! To register for one of the College Nights and for additional information, visit our website at www.asjb.org. Registration is limited to 50 students per night.
