and here we are again. it’s another new

issue of Off Course and i’m wondering

what happened to the time in between the

last and this one. the pace of life has had me

reeling, not knowing if i’m coming or going.

(Worse than usual, anyway).

the last couple of months have seen a

steady stream of visitors to my door – and,

while very welcome, i can’t for the life of me

figure why family which hasn’t visited in six

years aLL suddenly have to come in a matter of

six Weeks. juggling work, riding and cycling

around them has been a challenge. i’m not

complaining, i love that they came, it’s just

been a little crazy.

that said, i really haven’t had a whole lot

of time for much of anything. i’m loving the

spring weather (not so much the pollen) and

getting out as often as i can. george is coming

along splendidly – i think he’s finally training

me how to ride him. and he’s turning into

quite the lover as well...every ride must now

be preceded by several moments of ‘don’t put

my bridle on until you’ve held my head and pet

me for awhile’. ok, i know, it’s a stall tactic (pun

intended), but it’s nice to imagine that he loves

me. however, decreased time in the saddle and

entertaining the troops means that i didn’t

achieve my goal of taking him to a show this

spring. in fact, the may schooling show was

my target. But ... i was summoned to rome.

Literally. some friends invited my husband and

i to join them for a celebration of sorts in that

town. it was hard to turn down. especially since

they are footing the bill. so, as you’re reading

this, i’ll be winging my way over the pond for

some sort of adventure. i’m not really sure

what is planned, so there’s no telling what will

happen. that and the fact that we’re booked on

alitalia ... well, hopefully you’ll be hearing from

me again!

enough about me. there’s been so much

going on for our club, i can’t help but ask,

‘what’s next?’. it doesn’t seem like we could

possibly be any busier. there’ve been so many

shows i can hardly keep up. and it’s not slowing

down for at least another month. get out there

and enjoy! and send in some pictures. and

Barn dirt!

the first Fleur de Leap of the year was a

great success. the weather was fabulous and i

hope everyone else had as good a time as i did.

next on tap is the seda junior classic the first

weekend of june – it’s always a good time and i

hope to see you all there, too.

Big news for seda ... we’re finally on

Facebook! Please check us out there (www.

facebook.com/sedariders) and add to the

conversations. tag yourselves in photos. have

fun! just remember to keep it clean!

there are lots of photos in this issue, i hope

we caught you! you just never know where

we’ll find you and when you’ll show up in these

pages ... plus it’s fun looking for new faces and

adding them to the mix.

standings are updated, show results are in,

there’s even a scholarship report ...so get busy!

happy reading and happy riding! s

i’m having a

hard time grasping

just how quickly

this year is flying

by. Winter went

by the wayside,

spring sprang and

summer is getting

ready to sizzle and

i still haven’t become used to writing 2013

on my checks (or filed my taxes for that

matter). i’ve only recently emerged from

the Benadryl fog i am enveloped in every

march and april...thanks for nothing

Live oaks!

immediately prior to my eyes sealing

shut for a month and my nose launching

into perma-flow, i drove my daughter

cameron and rachel dell up to

Browse on the Bayou at the university of

Louisiana, monroe. it’s an opportunity

to visit the college and get a taste of the

courses on offer and campus life. instead

of pounding the interstate on the way

up, we took the back roads, enjoying the

scenery and playing silly word games. We

checked into our hotel and then hooked up

with sheri Kitchens and her daughter,

bella, who live close to the university.

after a fun dinner, we went chez kitchens

and met all their critters. i don’t think

i’ve ever met such a friendly bunch of

kitties. they made quite the welcoming

committee. once back in the hotel,

cameron fell asleep very quickly leaving

rachel and me to discover just how close

the hotel was to the train tracks, the busy

schedule maintained by the railroad and

their fervor in sticking to it. train whistles

every half hour close enough to be in the

next room are not exactly a lullaby and

we needed to be up early. ugh! after an

enjoyable tour we wound our way back

through the countryside and got home

right before some nasty weather moved

in. timing is everything.

it’s a small world after all. leslie

morris was newly reminded of that.

she recently sold her Psg mount (owned

by corrine morrison), meant to be

(“tobie”), to a great new home in north

carolina. the new owner’s trainer was

chatting to leslie who mentioned that

former seda member Joe Galion had

moved up to his area. coincidentally

enough, the trainer said that Joe and his

horse remy had actually boarded with

him before a further move took them

away again. as the conversation unfolded,

tobie’s turnout needs were addressed.

leslie said that he used to go out with

another gelding, montreal. at the

mention of montreal, the trainer asked

if she was referring to a Psg swedish

Warmblood. leslie said indeed she was

and that prior to his passing at a ripe old

age, he belonged to Janel martin. the

trainer then said that montreal had been

his horse and he’d lost track of Janel

and montreal after katrina. talk about

coincidence.

Jamie barowka recently spent

four glorious days in Wellington with

her friends Pat and sue. sue works

for Phelps media group and spent the

entire winter season covering all the

big dressage shows. Lucky sue got to

photograph and interview all the top

names after they exited the ring and went

through bit check. Jamie’s introduction

to Wellie World was the Wellington

cdi5*show. not a bad place to start.

riders included tina Konyot, steffen

peters and heather blitz from the

usa, evi strasser and ashley holzer

from canada and danish riders lars

peterson and mikala Gundersen. the

girls were thrilled as steffen peters and

legolas 92 won the class. saturday night

was the grand Prix Freestyle and the

grandstand was buzzing. Jackie brooks

from canada opened the show riding to

her beautiful ‘allelujah’music as the sun

was setting, lending even more electricity

to an already charged atomosphere. tina

Konyott and calecto v did their routine

to Big Black Horse in a Cherry Tree but

lars peterson stole the show and the

blue ribbon with his fun and energetic

circus music. heather and paragon had

a lovely ride and the crowd went wild as

they showed off their extended trot across

the diagonal. Jamie thought it such a

treat to cheer for a “local” girl at such a

prestigious show

afterwards, they got to meet steffen

peters briefly (just long enough for

a quick picture). they also met lars

petersen, who was so happy from his big

win. and Jackie brooks from canada was the

nicest, most down to earth person when they

chatted to her. she calls her horse “goose” and

the love just pours from her when she talks

about him.

the shopping was fabulous (of course) and

they drove around looking at the barns... they

looked more like castles. Before she left for this

trip, everyone told Jamie that Wellington is a

different world. it’s hard to explain until you

experience it for yourself. But it’s so true!!!

she had a great time and made memories for

a lifetime.

bonnie Ferrell’s dancon has been sold to

a new owner in albuquerque, nm. trainer and

new owner are doing a great job with him and

reports are good. he’s a wonderful horse and

everyone at anne hornbeak stables misses

him…. But...anne and bonnie also went to

Wellington and they found a new boy for her!

Giovanni, a 9 year old oldenburg. he’s sweet

as can be and bonnie can’t wait to get him out

and about.

Katie tharp is back home at runnymede

Farm, a boarding and training barn in Folsom.

she has finished her publicity internship for

Warner music in nashville and she was also

riding for a Westphalian farm in Franklin run

by margit nentwig. she has been a bit of a

globe trotter the last few years. many of you will

remember that Katie worked for heather at

oak hill back in 2001. she went to najyrc at

tempel Farm, illinois, that year, and following

the championship became a working student

for lynda alicki for the Wellington season.

Katie also qualified for najyrc in 2002 but

was unable to attend since the competition was

held in canada. Katie retired her yr horse,

bandolero at intermediaire ii. she then spent

half a year with steffen peters in rancho

santa Fe, california. in 2005 she was one

of two riders in the nation selected to attend

the small tour sydney cdi*** in australia.

on her return, she went to work for volker

brommann in texas prior to her position in

nashville. needless to say, Katie is delighted

to be back at her parents’ farm and plans on

staying around!

and talking of the najyrc, three seda

juniors are currently in the running for

region 9 team selection. the qualifying period

runs through the end of june, so there’s going

to be a few anxious weeks in store for Kalie

beckers, cameron dauterive and mattie

Zepernick. region 9 has eleven juniors vying

for four available spots on the team and the

competition is just heating up. Wouldn’t it be

great if all our girls made it? it’s an expensive

undertaking sending a full team each of juniors

and young riders to the championship. to

that end, amen corner Farm recently held

a benefit schooling dressage show to help

fund our talented riders. the show raised

$1600 towards the projected goal of $18,000.

a big thank you goes to rene & lawrence

Kurzius of amen corner Farm for their

generosity and help in this endeavor and also

to show sponsors vicky busch of busch

sporthorses and dr. paula Gregory. dr.

Gerlinde beckers “L” kindly donated her

judging fee. it takes a village to fund a team!

i see there are some new names on the

membership roster. i’d love to be able to write

a few snippets about you too.

send me the dirt.

“i’m so Bored”...ever consider summer riding camp?By Gerlinde Beckers, Ph.D., Jr/YR Director

j u n i o r s / y o u n g r i d e r s

summer will be here before you know

it, so it’s time to think about what

your kids will do to pass the time. have

you ever considered summer camp…

specifically, summer riding camp? For

horse loving children, summer riding

camp can be a good way to spend the

summer. a summer riding camp is a

perfect opportunity to let your child

experience horseback riding without a

lengthy time or financial commitment

of actually buying a horse. it is a time of

‘try it before you buy it’! in this time your

children will learn the fundamentals of

riding. they will learn horse management

such as horse physiology, health and care,

as well as proper care and maintenance of

tack and equipment. But most important,

good summer riding camps will teach

horse and riding safety. your children

will be physically active while establishing

lasting friendships.

according to the national camp

association, choosing a summer camp

for your child involves some important

research. When selecting a riding camp,

parents must first decide which discipline

of riding their child desires to learn. the

main riding disciplines are english and

Western. summer riding camps can

provide an opportunity for current riders

to experience another riding discipline.

good riding camps will provide riding

opportunities for experienced riders

in addition to those children who have

never been on a horse before. summer

riding camps come in many different

shapes and sizes, in small stables or large

farms. there are facilities that only run

camp programs and there are boarding

summer riding programs.

Following are seven guidelines to help

you make the right choice in selecting the

perfect summer riding camp.

#1 what is the riding camp’s philosophy?

is it a good match for your child’s

temperament? is competition or

cooperation emphasized? is the camp’s

philosophy one you are comfortable with

as a parent?

# 2 what does

a typical daily

schedule look like?

ask how much

freedom your

child has to choose

activities. Will your

child be happy with

the level of physical

activity involved?

Will your child

be willing to engage in the “non-riding”

components of camp?

#3 how much are you willing to

spend?

most day camps cost an average of

$300 for five days. there is typically an

additional charge for extended hours

and campers usually are required to

provide their own lunch. a lot depends

on the amenities, activities, staffing,

facility upkeep and the cost of horse

care. most important to know is

prices do not represent the quality of

instruction or lesson horses available.

most riding camps typically have

available the basic riding equipment

such as a helmet, but you will most

likely have to purchase hard-soled

boots with a heel and jeans or riding

pants.

#4 what style of riding do you want

your child to experience?

as stated earlier, riding camps

offer a wide variety of disciplines.

your basic decision will be: english or

Western? english disciplines offer a

future in what is known as dressage,

jumping obstacles in hunters, jumpers,

or eventing, which is a combination

of dressage and jumping. Western

disciplines offer a future in reining,

pleasure and horsemanship, trail,

mounted games and rodeo events.

#5 how old is your child and what is

their riding skill level…honestly?

young children traditionally fall

in loves with horses from watching

movies or from their storybooks. most

riding camps allow campers as young

as 5 years old. children under the age of 5

years old or “school-age” are rarely allowed

to attend camp and this is primarily due to

safety reasons. there is no “perfect” age to

begin riding – that is determined by the

individual child – but what is very important

when looking for a summer riding camp is

to honestly determine your child’s riding

skill level. good summer riding camps offer

programs to accommodate a broad range of

skill levels. unfortunately, riding skill levels

are not clearly defined in the horse world.

typically, there are generic definitions

such as beginner, novice, intermediate and

advanced. Beginner is the one level that

needs to be clearly defined when looking for

the right summer riding camp. Beginner

means your child has little or no riding or

horse experience. ask the camp director

for clarification because each riding camp

is different. getting your child placed in

the right summer riding camp is a must

for their enjoyment and, most importantly,

their safety.

#6 what is the riding camp’s approach to

discipline?

ask about the camp’s rules and what

happens when these rules are broken? how do

they handle conflicts between campers? as a

parent, you should feel comfortable with these

rules and the consequences should align with

your personal parenting practices

#7 ask for references.

Finally and most importantly, get the names

and contact information of parents who have

children who have attended the riding camp

before. typically, this will be parents who have

had good experiences, but you can still get more

information by asking the right questions.

the right summer riding camp will

encourage your child to explore and learn in

a safe, monitored environment that could

possibly result in a life-long passion for horses

and riding. remember…today’s junior and

young riders are the equestrian leaders of

tomorrow. Without them, our sport has no

future. s

sharpening the BasicsBy Sarah Truett, recipient of the Fall 2012 SEDA Junior Scholarship

s C h o l a r s h i p r e p o r t

When i received my seda scholarship, i

discussed with my trainer – elizabeth

cummins – what would be best to do with

this opportunity since i have a six year old

Paint mare named Flicka. Because Flicka is

a green horse that can jump and do simple

dressage, we decided to use it towards a set of

lessons with alescandra Pastuszek. We knew

“ms. al” would be a great help to Flicka and

me because we needed to concentrate on the

basics, like body mechanics, balance, and

obedience.

sure enough, when ms. al assessed us as a

team, she found that the biggest problems we

were having were in bend and balance.

ms. al began with body mechanics and

how to get a different reaction from Flicka

by just shifting my weight in the saddle. By

shifting the weight in my seat bones, i can

bend her, make her side pass, speed up or

slow down. even the way i held my shoulders

had a major effect on how my horse moved

and the way she bent her body. We also

worked on teaching Flicka how to flex to the

left and to the right, which is her stiffer side,

to help loosen her from head to tail. i also

learned how counter bending my horse could

help produce better bend and balance to the

inside which would help make her move

more correctly.

ground work was another teaching

method ms. al showed me to improve Flicka’s

obedience and respect for me. it also helped

with her bend and flexibility. We worked

both on a straight line and on a circle, making

Flicka respect my space and move where i

wanted.

ms. al showed me how to teach my horse

to place her inside foot over her outside

which helped Flicka to keep her balance while

moving. again, this helped immensely with

her flexibility. We also utilized the concept of

“inside over outside” when i was mounted at

the walk to put the flexibility into practice. i

quickly realized the need for better awareness

of Flicka’s entire body as it moved. For

instance, as i crossed her inside front foot

over her outside, i had to be conscious of

Flicka’s haunches or else she would “fall in”

or “pop a shoulder” and/or even come too far

off the straight line i was trying to make!

Flicka and i found our lessons with ms. al

very beneficial. i hope to continue my lessons

with her and use what she taught me to

improve my riding capabilities as well as help

my horse grow. s
