T T HE HE G G IFT OF THE IFT OF THE E E UCHARIST UCHARIST The Eucharist is given to us as a challenge and a promise. That's how Jesus presents it in today's Gospel. The Lord doesn't make it easy for those who hear Him. They are repulsed and offended at His words. Even when they begin to quarrel, He insists on describing the eating and drinking of His flesh and blood in starkly literal terms. Four times in today's reading, Jesus uses a Greek word—trogein—that refers to a crude kind of eating, almost a gnawing or chewing (see John 6:54,56,57,58). He is testing their faith in His Word, as today's First Reading describes God testing Israel in the desert. The heavenly manna was not given to satisfy the Israelites' hunger, as Moses explains. It was given to show them that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. In today's Psalm, too, we see a connection between God's Word and the bread of life. We sing of God filling us with "finest wheat" and proclaiming his Word to the world. In Jesus, "the living Father" has given us His Word come down from heaven, made flesh for the life of the world. Yet as the Israelites grumbled in the desert, many in today's Gospel cannot accept that Word. Even many of Jesus' own followers abandon Him after this discourse (see John 6:66). But His words are Spirit and life, the words of eternal life (see John 6:63,67). In the Eucharist we are made one flesh with Christ. We have His life in us and have our life because of Him. This is what Paul means in today's Second Reading when He calls the Eucharist a "participation" in Christ's body and blood. We become in this sacrament partakers of the divine nature. This is the mystery of the faith that Jesus asks us believe. He gives us His promise: that sharing in His flesh and blood that was raised from the dead, we too will be raised up on the last day.

But His words are Spirit and life, the words of eternal life (see John 6:63,67).

This is the mystery of the faith that Jesus asks us believe. He gives us His promise: that sharing in His flesh and blood that was raised from the dead, we too will be raised up on the last day.

What Does the Catechism say about Mercy & Sin?

The Gospel is the revelation in Jesus Christ of God's mercy to sinners. The angel announced to Joseph: "You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." The same is true of the Eucharist, the sacrament of redemption: "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." God created us without us: but he did not will to save us without us. To receive his mercy, we must admit our faults. "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." As St. Paul affirms, "Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more." But to do its work grace must uncover sin so as to convert our hearts and bestow on us "righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Like a physician who probes the wound before treating it, God, by his Word and by his Spirit, casts a living light on sin.

Sin is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience; it is failure in genuine love for God and neighbour caused by a perverse attachment to certain goods. It wounds the nature of man and injures human solidarity. It has been defined as "an utterance, a deed, or a desire contrary to the eternal law." Sin is an offense against God. Sin sets itself against God's love for us and turns our hearts away from it. Like the first sin, it is disobedience, a revolt against God through the will to become "like gods," knowing and determining good and evil. Sin is thus "love of oneself even to contempt of God." In this proud self- exaltation, sin is diametrically opposed to the obedience of Jesus, which achieves our salvation.

It is precisely in the Passion, when the mercy of Christ is about to vanquish it, that sin most clearly manifests its violence and its many forms: unbelief, murderous hatred, shunning and mockery by the leaders and the people, Pilate's cowardice and the cruelty of the soldiers, Judas' betrayal - so bitter to Jesus, Peter's denial and the disciples' flight. However, at the very hour of darkness, the hour of the prince of this world, the sacrifice of Christ secretly becomes the source from which the forgiveness of our sins will pour forth inexhaustibly.

TRINITY SUNDAY -- OO N E N E GG O D I N O D I N TT H R E E H R E E PP E R S O N S E R S O N S --

The fundamental doctrine on which Christianity is based is that of the Blessed Trinity in whose name all Christians are baptised. Only in heaven will we properly understand what it means to share as sons and daughters in the very life of God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The feast of the Blessed Trinity was introduced in the ninth century and was only inserted in the general calendar of the Church in the fourteenth century by Pope John XXII. Through the liturgy the Church calls on us to praise and adore the three-in-one God who has given us to share in His life. The prayers at Mass each Sunday reflect our belief in the three persons of God.

The doctrine (or dogma) of faith which forms the object of the feast is this: There is one God and in this one God there are three Divine Persons; the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God. Yet there are not three Gods, but one, eternal, incomprehensible God, bound in perfect unity and equality. The Father is not more God than the Son, neither is the Son more God than the Holy Spirit. No human person can fully fathom this truth, but we humbly say: ‘Lord, I believe, help my weak faith’.

This feast, which falls on the first Sunday after Pentecost, should make us mindful that actually every Sunday is devoted to the honour of the Most Holy Trinity, that every Sunday is sanctified and consecrated to the triune God. Sunday after Sunday we are asked to recall in a spirit of gratitude the gifts which the Blessed Trinity is bestowing upon us. The Father created and predestined us; on the first day of the week He began the work of creation. The Son redeemed us; Sunday is the “Day of the Lord,” the day of His resurrection. The Holy Spirit sanctified us, made us His temple; on Sunday the Holy Spirit descended upon the infant Church. Sunday, therefore, is the day of the Holy Trinity.

Diocesan Bene Merenti Medal Awards

This Sunday at 12 noon we welcome Bishop Toal to celebrate our special 125th Anniversary Mass. During the Mass the Bishop will also bestow the honour of the Diocesan Bene Merenti Award upon two people within our parish. Firstly Sr. Eileen will receive the medal in recognition of her ministry as the Pastoral Assistant over these twenty years. Mrs Mary Rice, our parish Sacristan, will also receive the Medal in recognition of her faithful service to the Church, especially in her role as a Church worker and formerly as an outstanding Catholic teacher. We congratulate both on receiving this honour.
