Our Mission Welcome to The Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion, a welcoming and diverse community seeking to walk in the way of Jesus and to reveal Christ’s reconciling love in our city, nation, and world.

Can I receive Communion? Yes. Whoever you are, wherever you find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome to receive the bread and wine made holy.

Are children welcome? Yes. Children are invited to participate actively in the service. We expect everyone to act their age at Holy Commnion, which means we expect kids to act like kids. We encourage parents to involve their children by leading them in prayer, modeling good listening, and sharing the Eucharist. We also offer a quiet play space to the front left of the altar. Coloring sheets and books can be found in the entrances. The chapel is also a great place to bring a boisterous kid, where parents can still hear the service. We know some ages and stages are particularly challenging for liturgy. The nursery is an option. Nursery care is available 8:00am - 11:40am for children ages 0-4; the Nursery is located through the lounge. Godly Play, our program for children over age 4 begins at 9:15am. Changing tables are located in the bathrooms and in the Nursery. If you have questions, please ask one of the clergy!

How do I find my way around? There is a map by the Welcome Table in the main entryway (on the East side of the church). Also, feel free to ask anyone around you for directions, or help navigating the service.

Where are the restrooms? There are single-user, all-gender restrooms in the Lounge, through the main (East) door, and through the next glass door. There are gendered, larger restrooms downstairs (take the elevator or stairs at the end of the long hallway in front of that entrance). Changing tables are available in the downstairs restrooms or in the nursery.

Is there wheelchair accessibility? Yes. Our entrances have auto-open buttons, and our elevator is ADA compliant. Both the downstairs restrooms and one of the upstairs restrooms are accessible. Everyone is invited to remain seated during the service as they need.

What about hearing assistance? We can help there, too. Hearing assistance devices are available from the ushers. Just ask.

How do I get involved? If you begin by filling out a “Connect Card” in your pew, or at the Welcome Table, we’d be glad to keep you up to date with all that goes on here. You can also use the Connect Cards to update your information, request prayers, or to ask a question.

Become a member. All are welcome to be here and to explore. If you would like to learn more and meet interesting people, consider joining Pilgrimage, the Rector’s class for newcomers and explorers. Childcare is available. Read more on the website or email the rector with questions or to sign up ([email protected]).

Opening Acclamation Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever.

Collect for PurityAlmighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Canticle Precious Lord, Take My Hand Tommy Dorsey Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn; through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light, take my hand, precious Lord, lead me on. When my way grows drear, precious Lord, linger near, when my life is almost gone; hear my cry, hear my call, hold my hand, lest I fall, take my hand, precious Lord, lead me on. When the darkness appears and the night draws near, and the day is past and gone; at the river I stand, guide my feet, hold my hand, take my hand, precious Lord, lead me on.

This re-usable booklet contains the parts of the service we do week in and week out. The Scripture, hymn numbers, and announcements which change week to week are on a yellow insert.Throughout the service, the bold portions are the parts the congregation says together.

The Song of Praise is a portion of Scripture which helps orient us toward the work of worship. The most common song of Praise, the Gloria, is substituted in the month of February with the words of the hymn, “Precious Lord Take My Hand” by the prolific Gospel composer Tommy Dorsey.

Liturgy of the Word The first part of the service is the Liturgy of the Word: We hear and learn about God’s work in the world.

CollectThe Presider reads ancient prayers to begin the service.

We follow a three-year cycle of readings called the Lectionary. These are the lessons being heard in congregations of all denominations throughout the world on this day. You will find the readings and the psalm or anthem on the insert.

The Holy Gospel Please stand as the Gospel reader and acolyte process to the middle of the assembly. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to ________. Glory to you, Lord Christ. After the Lesson the Gospel reader says:The Gospel of our Lord.Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon Please be seated at the invitation of the Preacher.

The Nicene Creed Please stand. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally

begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

4

We stand for the Gospel to indicate the importance we place of Jesus’ words and actions. The Gospel book comes into the midst of the people and all turn toward the reader.

The Sermon connects our readings to our day to day life.

The Creed The Episcopal Church does not have a separate statement of faith or list of things we believe. Instead we hold the ancient Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds to be our statements of faith. They contain the core of our belief as Christians, but do not limit our faith. The version of the Creed we are using in this season comes from Enriching our Worship. You may notice subtle changes from the prayer book. These were made for the sake of gender inclusion, and to honor ecumenical commintments with the Orthodox church.

The Prayers of the People Please stand or kneel.

Let us pray for the Church and for the world. Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world. We pray for our Bishop Wayne and our Bishop-elect Deon. We pray for our seminarians, Meg Goldstein and Mary Haggerty. We pray for the Church in El Salvador, and in the Diocese of Missouri for [here the leader prays for a church or ministry in the cycle of prayer of the Diocese of Missouri]. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

We give you thanks for all those who celebrate birthdays this week (especially…) Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or Spirit (especially…); give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

5

The Prayers of the People are not “announcements to God.” Rather, they are a moment when we stand together to name our needs.

We pray for the church. We pray for our partners in El Salvador, especially Cristosal an NGO which works for human rights throughout Central America.

In this season, you will notice we are praying for our bishop and his newly elected successor. We are also praying for our seminiarians by name as they begin a new semester.

Each week specific additions are made to the Prayers of the People, as we folllow the diocesan cycle of prayer in praying for a specific conegregation or ministry. We also pray for those with birthdays, those who are sick, and folks close to the conegrgation who have died. If you would like a name added to the prayers, please contact a member of the clergy or the parish office.

We commend to your mercy all who have died (especially…), that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.

You are invited to add your own prayers, silently or aloud. Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. The Presider may add a concluding collect.

The Confession Please stand or kneel.

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.

Presider Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Peace Please stand. The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you.You are invited to greet those around you by saying “Peace be with you” or simply “Peace.”

Welcome and Announcements Please be seated for a few brief announcements.

Presentation of the Offering Please stand. All things come of thee, O Lord. And of thine own have we given thee.

6

You are encouraged to add your own prayers, silently or aloud.

We confess our sins together, and receive God’s forgiveness, pronounced by the priest.

In the Peace, we affirm our reconciliation with one another as preparation for receiving communion. In ancient times, Christians would greet each other with “the kiss of peace”. Today we shake hands or hug. There are no set words- “Peace”, “God’s Peace”, and “The Peace of the Lord be with you.” are all commonly used.

With the Welcome and Announcements we deliver any information that is important for the community gathered.

Offering The clergy prepare the table as the plates are passed. If you would like to know more about our theology of giving, or how our gifts are used, please visit holycommunion.net/giving or speak to a clergy person.

The Liturgy of the Table

Eucharistic Prayer Enriching our Worship Prayer 3 The Lord be with you And also with youLift up your HeartsWe lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.It is right to give God thanks and praise.

The presider offers thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ. In response all say:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The presider gives thanks to God for Christ’s redeeming work, and remembers Jesus’ last supper with his disciples. The people are invited to respond to the words: We acclaim you, O Christ: Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory!

The presider concludes with prayer for the Holy Spirit to sanctify the bread and wine, and the gathered congregation.

The Eucharistic prayer concludes with a plea for the coming of God’s reign.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. Amen.

7

The Liturgy of the Table The second part of the service moves to the Table. As we remember Jesus’ last supper with his disciples, we gather in a way Christians have for millenia.

There are a number of Eucharistic Prayers that we use at Holy Communion. Some come from the Book of Common Prayer. Others from Enriching our Worship- a collection of prayers moving toward gender inclusion.

The Sanctus (Holy, holy, holy) recalls the words of the prophet Isaiah, overwhelmed by the presence of God in the sanctuary.

When we say or sing The Great Amen St. Augustine said, we “say Amen to our very mystery.” That is to say, we say “yes” to the truth that Christ is in us, we are in Christ. We become what we receive and serve the world in Christ’s name. It is no small thing to say or sing this word at this place in the service. This is the only word in the whole Prayer book in ALL CAPS.

The Lord’s Prayer Pray in the language you prefer: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the BreadAlleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Administration of the SacramentAll are invited to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Gluten Free wafers are available, on request, from the minister. If you would prefer to receive a blessing, simply cross your arms over your chest.

Post Communion Prayer Please stand or kneel. Enriching Our WorshipGod of abundance, you have fed uswith the bread of life and cup of salvation;you have united us with Christ and one another;and you have made us onewith all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the worldand continue foreverin the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.

8

The Lord’s Prayer At Holy Communion we print the Lord’s Prayer in English and in Spanish. You are invited to pray in the language of your heart.

The Breaking of the Bread recalls Jesus breaking bread at the Last Supper, and it also reminds us that Jesus’ body was broken on the cross for us. Therefore we keep a moment of silence for prayers of awe and gratitude.

Receiving CommunionYou are invited to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the consecrated bread and wine. If you would rather receive a blessing, please come forward to the altar rail during communion and cross your arms across your chest. Gluten free wafers are available, on request, from the minister.

The Postcommunion Prayer reminds us that what we do each Sunday sends us out into the world with work to do. We receive Christ that we might serve the world in Christ’s name.

The Blessing The people stand or kneel as the presider proclaims the final blessing.

The Dismissal Our worship has ended, our service in the world continues.Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.

9

A Blessing is given.

The final act of our common worship is the Dismissal. It is not an afterthought, but an integral part of the service. The word “Mass” comes from the Latin words “missa est”- “you are sent.” Jesus‘ final action on earth was to send his followers into the world to make disciples, baptizing and teaching them to obey all that he commanded. This is what we are all called to do. Our Sunday service has ended, our service in the world continues.
