Dear Members and Friends,Come and Talk To Me!My unique work as an interim pastor is to do

all the things a regular pastor does, but I also helpthe church successfully navigate the interim time onthe way to calling a new installed pastor.

Toward this end, my first priority as aninterim pastor is to get together one-on-one withchurch members and ask some good questions andsit back and listen. I consider myself a listening postfor the congregation when I arrive at a church.

This listening accomplishes two things. First,church members who are listened to are given aneeded opportunity to articulate their thoughts andfeelings about their church. Sometimes thosethoughts and feelings surprise them because theyhave not had a prior opportunity to articulate them.

Second, when I take time to listen I as anoutsider and newcomer learn a great deal about achurch in a very short time, and after I learn thosethings I can speak with confidence about the churchto the church.

I would say that listening to church memberstalk about their church is among the most importanttasks I carry out as an interim pastor.

In order to accomplish this listening phase ofmy interim pastor here at Shelby Presbyterian I needthe cooperation of church members. I try to talk one-on-one with at least 40 or 50 individuals in the fewmonths in every church I pastor.

If you can spare an hour of your time thismonth, I encourage you to call Miranda Wood, ourChurch Administrator, and set up an appointmentwith me. I can meet you whenever it is convenientfor you, whether that is morning, afternoon orevening, and wherever it is convenient for you. Ihave a questionnaire that I use to guide us throughthat hour. Everything you say is confidential, and Iwill never quote you. I do share publicly themes I’veheard repeated in multiple conversations withmembers.

NEWS FROM THE CHURCH EDUCATOR

•Worship Note Sheets are now available for both the8:30 and 11:00 services.

•There will be NO Music Makers or KFC during themonth of December.

•December 1st and 8th the Christian EducationCommittee will meet with younger Sunday SchoolClasses to see who is interested in participating inthe Christmas Eve Service. They will also begin to fitparticipants for costumes during these dates.

•Christmas Eve practice for children will be on selectWednesday nights during the month of December.

NEWS FROM RAINBOW CONNECTION

October was a colorful, busy month atRainbow Connection. We painted pumpkins, sang fallsongs, visited the Fire Department, and bakedpumpkin muffins. We enjoyed God's beautiful, coolfall weather as we played on the playground. It wasa wonderful time to be at Rainbow!

We have a Basket Raffle going on nowthrough November 20th. If you would like to seepictures of the baskets, they are on Rainbow'sFacebook page. Tickets are $1.00 each. The drawingfor the baskets will be at our Thanksgiving Luncheonon November 20th.

On Wednesday, November 20th, at 11:30 am,we will have our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. Themeal will include vegetable soup, sandwiches,chicken nuggets and dessert. The Rainbow parentsprovide the ingredients, and by working together, wefeed everyone. There is no charge for the meal. Hopeyou can join us!

We are thankful for many things at Rainbowand especially thankful for you, our ShelbyPresbyterian family. Thank you for your lovingsupport and prayers.

PRESBYTERIAN DISASTER RELIEF

Isaiah 41:13Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas

as a category 5 hurricane on September 1, 2019.Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is stillmonitoring Hurricane Dorian as it affects the Atlanticcoast of the U.S. All of us feel great sadness about thedamage this hurricane has already caused, the loss oflife, destroyed homes and structures, floods andaffected vegetation. PDA is currently incommunication with one of our partners in theBahamas, Bahamas Methodist Habitat, as well as U.S.presbyteries in the path of Dorian. As part of PDA'sinitial response, a solidarity grant has beencoordinated for response efforts in the Bahamas. Wehave been in communication with severalinternational response organizations, including ChurchWorld Service (CWS) and ACT Alliance, as well asNational Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster(VOAD) and Puerto Rico VOAD. In conversations withACT Alliance and CWS, we are identifying the best timeand best way to travel to the Bahamas as part of adamage assessment team to implement a rapid, timelyand effective emergency response to HurricaneDorian’s impact; identifying needs, local capacities andproviding updated information. In the past few dayswe have also answered the call of many people eagerto know how to respond to this emergency.

We understand the genuine desire to helpour neighbors. The reality is that right now thesituation on the affected islands is critical. Access tothe affected islands has been reserved for firstresponder organizations doing search and rescue, andproviding first aid relief. As learned from previousdisasters and the shared experience of many relieforganizations, the best way to respond to a disaster isthrough monetary donations. As USAID indicates,“Cash donations are the most efficient form ofassistance. Unlike material donations, cash involves notransportation costs, shipping delays, or customs fees.It also enables relief organizations to spend more timeproviding aid by spending less time managing goods.Cash donations also allow relief supplies to bepurchased in markets close to the disaster site, whichstimulates the local economy, thereby boostingemployment and generating cash flow.”

COMMUNICATIONSClerk – Paul Woodard•New Officer training is scheduled for late Octoberand into November with installation in December.•Officers were asked to turn in any copies of“Selected to Serve” to the office as well as officerbinders.•Bobbi White’s retirement dinner is scheduled forOctober 15th. Because of this conflict, the nextSession meeting will be changed to October 22nd.•Pastor Luke Harkey will be taking vacation timeduring the last two weeks in September. The newInterim Pastor will begin on October 1st. •“Former Pastor Policy and Covenant of Closure”was presented by Clerk Paul Woodard. This statespolicy regarding former Pastors. Former Pastor maynot return to the Church or contact members. Members may contact him, but no Church businessmay be discussed. The document was signed byPastor Harkey in the presence of the Session. Pastor- Luke Harkey•Luke has contacted Richard DuVose at Montreatregarding the Congregational Retreat. He wasreferred to Vice President Tanner Pickett, who willmeet with Luke to discuss possible changes regardingpayment for the retreat. Further information will beforthcoming. MINUTESMinutes of the Session Meeting on August 3, 2019were approved with the following correction:•Under Youth Committee, the dates for the youthprogramming packet should read 2019-2020 ratherthan 2019-2010.

COMMITTEESChristian Education – Anne Langley•Worship Note Sheets will available for all ages onSunday, September 22nd at the 11:00 service.•85 people attended Rally Day Sunday, September8th.•The first day of Sunday School will be September15th. All Sunday School teacher positions are filledand all materials have been ordered and areavailable. Kids for Christ will resume Sunday,September 22nd.•A Children’s Card Care ministry has been startedduring Wednesday Night Supper Program. Childrenwill make cards to send to members who needencouragement from the church family. Finance – John Brotherton•The balance owed for the piano in the Sanctuaryhas been paid off. Thanks were offered to all whodonated to this cause.Membership – Margaret Harry•The sign in cards for visitors do not typically haveaddresses or phone numbers included, so thecommittee has had difficulty contacting them. Recommendation was made that small crosses begiven to first time visitors with a card attachedwhich includes a welcoming letter and Churchinformation. Potter Susan Jones has createdbeautiful ceramic crosses for this purpose. Sampleswere shown. A thank you to her will be included inthe newsletter. Cost will come from MembershipCommittee funds. Recommendation was approved.

Personnel – John Brotherton•Continuing to evaluate a part time maintenanceposition and formulate a job description. Information on the cost has been presented toFinance for budgeting.•An interview has been scheduled for Friday,September 13, 2019 for a part time nursery assistant.Property – Lloyd Williams, Jr. •The slate roof was inspected by a qualifiedprofessional. There are some problems primarilycaused by the use of lower quality slate used in pastrepairs. Some repair were made, but further workwill be needed in the future. All repairs done usedgood quality materials. Assessment will continue asneeded.•An estimate for outside painting work has beendone. Cost will be approximately $10,000.

•An estimate has been received for removal ofcarpet in Ellis Hall and replacement with woodgrainLVT flooring. Cost would be $15,400.00. This ispreliminary and no time line has been set.•An estimate has been received for removal of VCTflooring in the kitchen and replacement with quarrytile. Labor cost would be $4,100.00 Additional costfor plumbing to remove and install equipment(sinks, water heater, etc.) would be required. This ispreliminary and no time line has been set.

Fellowship – Robin Holland•Recommendation that a kitchen coordinator and/orcommittee be established when the kitchen updatemoves forward. Motion was made and approved.Mission and Ministry•Paul Woodard reported that a request has beenmade from Presbytery for help in replacing a radiofor the Malawi Synod. The radio is very importantfor communication and the previous one was takenby government forces. Steps will be taken to keep anew one out of sight. Funds are available in adiscretionary fund account for missions.ACTION ITEMS•Personnel will continue to work on parameters fora part time maintenance person.•A qualified profession will evaluate the sound boardand microphones and deliver a report.•Clerk Paul Woodard expressed the thanks of theSession and personal thanks to Pastor Luke Harkeyfor his many years of work and service to ShelbyPresbyterian Church and the Congregation.PRAYERS FOR CONCERNSADJOURN WITH PRAYER

Thanksgiving is a festival, which is celebratedwith much enthusiasm and joy in many parts of theworld, especially the countries of US and Canada.People express gratitude to God on this day, for all thevaluable things they possess in life. Near and dear onesare also thanked for their love and support. Feastingwith family and friends is a very important aspect ofthis festival. In fact, it is also the most delightful part ofthis festival. The entire family comes together to offerprayers to the Almighty, before the Thanksgiving dinnerand show their appreciation.
