CEO CORNERI attended the Blokes Night Out this week
and was genuinely impressed by the number
of men of ALL ages who took the time to
learn a little, participate a lot, and share
much with their peers and friends.
Naturally, targeting Men’s
Health can be a touchy subject
in some circles – but those who
attended joined in with gusto.
Brenden Nicholls from the
Regional Men’s Health Initiative
and Sally Nevill, Counsellor
gave some interesting
perspectives.
I acknowledge and accept that
everything is about choice.
What I choose to eat, drink,
discuss, think about, apply or
not apply results in the health
and mental health
circumstances in which I find
myself today. I acknowledge
that my choices can change
right now – with the very next
breath I take and that is the
wonderful thing of life.
Darren also reinforced a point
that I have previously pointed
to. The success of dealing with
the ups and downs of a normal
life, comes from having IN
PLACE the support networks
BEFORE the bumpiness
begins.
He talked of Partner, Peer and
Mentor support networks that
have the care and concern for
you let you discuss whatever is
on your mind. The work to
establish this support, starts in
choosing to do so early, as you
too are the Primary Care for
your connections. Well done
Darren – I certainly appreciated
your insight, as I am sure did all
those present.
Thanks to all who participated,
the Community Resource
Centre, Kondinin Medical
Centre, Kulin St John’s
Ambulance, the Kulin AOOB’s
and the Shire volunteers who
made the evening fun, as well
as a resounding success.

Blokes Night Out KulinMens Health Awareness Week 2017
The Kulin Community Resource Centre held a
Men’s Health Awareness evening in
partnership with the Regional Men’s health
Initiative (RMHI) on Tuesday June 20 at the
Freebarin Recreation Centre. Although we
had a couple of guest speakers to start, the
evening was actually for guys to talk to each
other, you’re each other’s support network out
here. In times like these it’s a good idea to not
only look after yourself and your family but
also your next door neighbours and your
community.
The evening started with a very engaging talk from RMHI delegate Brenden Nichols
who is a Registered Nurse and has spent the majority of his career specialising in
Mental Health. Brendon says he is passionate around engaging and supporting men
to realise their potential wellbeing and health, and this definitely came across in his
presentation. There were 56 blokes that came and listened to Brendon, and I
commend all of them for making the time to come. Sally Nevill who is a local
counsellor also spoke briefly to the crowd, talking from a woman’s perspective and
had some great take home messages for communication between men and women
Both Sally and Brenden also participated in
the Pit Stop Program, run by the Kulin St
Johns Volunteers, Shire of Kulin and Kondinin
Medical Centre. The Pit Stop Program was a
fun interactive nine station health check
system using the analogy of a vehicle. The
Test crew for Kulin 2017 included Gemma
Boxall who was the registration point and Nick
Grant who ‘marked’ the scores at the end to
determine if the participant was ‘roadworthy’!
A huge thank you to all the volunteers who came along for the evening, and a very
special thank you to Normie Quick and Peter Entwhistle from AOOBs for assisting in
the kitchen to cook the lovely hamburgers from the Kulin IGA I couldn’t have done it
without you!1 3 | K U L I N U P D A T E

Waist measurements for men is recommended to be under 94cm, which is a lot
smaller than it sounds! Greater than 94cm increases the chances of developing
problems such as Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Included in the
program is a flexibility test which is important to maintain to reduce risk of injury –
David Lewis is officially the most flexible man in Kulin! Brenden and Sally also had
great chats with our participants and if any bloke would like to speak to someone you
can call the Regional Men’s Health initiative on 1300 789 978.
The Pit Stop saw 27 blokes come through the
Pit Stop Program which was a fantastic
achievement and anyone who participate in
the program could choose a prize kindly
donated by Gangells Ag Solutions! The Test
Crew did a sterling job, having a good chat
and a laugh with everyone that came through.
It was fantastic to see a good mix of different
blokes have a go from 18 – 89 years of age. There was a few high blood pressures which I would encourage those people to make
an appointment with the Kondinin Medical Centre to keep an eye on. There were very
few smokers which was great and only a few who drank well over the recommended
limit which is no more than two standard drinks a day and no more than four in any
one drinking session.
The nine station were; Chassis Check (Waist
Measurement) – Kaye Tyson, Extractors
(Bowel Cancer) Rodney Duckworth, Torsion
(Flexibility) Mike Robins, Exhaust (Smoking)
Ronelle Tyson, Additives (Alcohol) Brendon
Sloggart, Oil Pressure (Blood Pressure) Amy
Parnell, Spark Plugs (Testes) Dr Alan
Mackie, Duco (Skin) Kate Bishop and Shock
Absorbers (Mental Health) Sally Nevill and
Brenden Nichols.

NETBALLRound 6 – 10th June 2017
Narembeen 4 (33) defended Kulin 4 (7)
Narembeen 3 (25) defended Kulin 3 (17) This week we travelled up to Narem with an under-manned team. Thanks to Fi Jasper and Ashlyn Ridgeway (Welcome to the Club!) for filling in and fitting into the team like you have been playing all season. Also thank you and congratulations to Charlotte Reader and Kate Niblock for making their senior netball debut, they played extremely well given the step up from junior competition and against the top team! That said playing the top team in B-grade, we certainly bought our a-game and played a great, consistent game only going down by 8 in the end. Our defence, Rhonda and Ash worked well together, improving each week. On the other end of the court our goalies, Lauren and Casey, gelled really well and couldn’t miss a shot. Also an exciting congratulations goes to Ash and Kate for their first Mother-Daughter game.
Kulin 2 (26) defended Narembeen 2 (23) With Coach Silver absent, both Foops and Dee sidelined with injury and Jus stepping up into A1, we knew this was going to be a tough game. Thanks to Lauren Mullan for dusting off her netball dress and filling in for us. Once again, Narem put up a fight until the end, but with us able to put together four strong quarters as a team, we were able to come away with our first win against Narem for the season.
Narembeen 1 (44) defended Kulin 1 (31) This was our first game of the second round and our second game against Narembeen. It was clear the team had improved as a whole and were a lot more confident throughout the game, however in the end the score did not reflect and we went down by 13 goals.
Night Game: 14th June 2017
Kulin 3 (41) defended Bruce Rock 3 (29)On Wednesday night, we travelled up to Bruce Rock for the annual night game. Thank you to everyone who came along and cheered us on and the timers and umpires for taking time out of your week. During this game it was our focus to reduce the amount of stepping, keeping our space and reoffering to get the pass and the girls couldn’t have done a better job. They were able to make many turn overs and bring the ball down the court to make the goals count. The girls managed to get a good lead on the score board and managed to build on their lead each quarter, coming away with a handy 12 goal win.
Kulin 2 (51) defended Bruce Rock 2 (19)Our night game against Bruce Rock possibly highlighted why netball should only be played during the day! It certainly wasn’t the prettiest of games and there were some interesting passages of play to say the least. At three quarter time we were given the challenge to reach 55 goals, falling just short in the end but coming away with a convincing win. There were definitely a few contenders for the ‘Shazza’ Award!
Kulin 1 (41) defended Bruce Rock 1 (27)Everyone’s favourite, the night game! We travelled to Bruce Rock last Wednesday night to play our second game against them. A1 didn’t get started until 8.30pm (when most would usually be in bed!) so it was definitely a different game. Although we were not up to our usual standard of netball, we still managed to come away with a win making arriving back in Kulin at 11pm at night all the more worth it.

A very successful Great Southern Colts Carnival was held in Kulin on the weekend. Eight
leagues competed in the carnival on Saturday and Sunday with the Grand Final on Sunday
between Great Southern Storm and Lower South West deciding the final result of the carnival,
with Lower South West finishing on top in a very close game.
The football played over the weekend was of a very high standard with some players no doubt
attracting the attention of talent scouts. A regional team has been selected from the carnivals
best players to compete at the Landmark Carnival in July.
I would like to thank committee members Noel Mason, Tracey Noble, Simone Lockyer and
Gemma Boxall for the huge effort leading up to and during the carnival. A huge thanks also to
the Kulin Shire and the Freebairn Centre for making the facilities available and helping with
the preparation of the grounds. Well done to Jay Robertson and the Kulin Kondinin Football
Club on helping to make the weekend such a great event.
Thanks very much to the sporting clubs and community groups who volunteered their time to
work on the many rosters during weekend.
I have already received some very positive feedback from participants regarding the weekend
and how lucky we are to have the amazing facilities that we have in our town.
I look forward to your support again in 2018.
Thanks
Don Bradford

Nicci Was Here Officially LaunchedThere was excitement in the air on Friday, 9th of June, as over 60
women gathered and chatted at the Freebairn Centre for the book
launch of 'Nicci Was Here', a memoir written by Kulin local Peta
West.
The memoir, 'Nicci Was Here' is now available for $25 locally at
the Kulin Community Resource Centre and Kulin Post Office,
or online through Vivid Publishing, $25 plus postage, so make
sure you get in quick to secure your copy!
www.vividpublishing.com.au - search Nicci Was Here and
follow the prompts to purchase.
Contributed from Caitlyn Burling
Erin warmly welcomed guests and spoke briefly about her reaction to the book and
read a few short excerpts before she introduced the woman of the hour, Peta.
Guests were greeted with a cold
glass of champagne and a spread
of delicious canapés and grazing
plates, before taking their seats
and officially welcomed by Kulin
Arts Council president Erin Bailey.
Speaking with the humour and humility Peta is known for,
also a common thread that runs throughout 'Nicci Was
Here', Peta also touched on a theme rarely spoken about,
the grief of losing a sibling.
She also spoke briefly about the origins of the book and
the themes behind it, in addition to reading a couple of
excerpts herself.
Guests were then given the opportunity to purchase the
first copies of 'Nicci Was Here' and while enjoying a hot
supper and a great catch up.

A recent emergency call out highlighted the need
for householders to put their street number on a
visible part of the house. The Shire will shortly
commence repainting the verge numbering but
as many of our volunteers have no knowledge of
peoples street address more visual information
to enable them to turn up at the correct address
will be beneficial.
