PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME to all who are visiting with us today! We hope you
will feel at home here and, if you do not already have a church
home, will consider becoming a part of the Saint Herman Church
community.
SOUP SUPPER AFTER PRESANCTIFIED LITURGIES –
please see Sue Ross if you can help cook for these meals
SATURDAY MARCH 3 – Liturgy for the Departed – On
Saturday morning we will commemorate all our loved ones who
have died. Please bring a legible list of the names of departed that
you want to commemorate, separating the Orthodox from the non-
Orthodox (I will use these lists to pray for your loved ones during
the Proskomedia for the next year)
A NOTE REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION Welcome! In the Orthodox Church, reception of the Holy Eucharist is
reserved for baptized, chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared
by prayer, fasting and a recent confession. If you are visiting from a non-
Orthodox church or otherwise are not prepared to commune today, you are
welcome to receive some of the unconsecrated, blessed bread which the
acolytes are holding. We pray for all to be united in the Body and Blood of
Christ! If you would like to learn how you can enter into communion with
the Orthodox Church, please speak with our clergy.

V
THE EPISTLE Blessed art Thou, O Lord, the God of our fathers.
For Thou art just in all that Thou hast done for us.
The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews.
(11:24-26, 32-40)
Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called
the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment
with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. And
what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak,
Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets; who through
faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped
the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the
sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, and put
foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection.
Some were tortured, refusing to accept release that they might rise again
to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains
and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were
killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats,
destitute, afflicted, ill-treated—of whom the world was not worthy—
wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the
earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive
what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that
apart from us they should not be made perfect.
THE GOSPEL The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. John. (1:43-51)
At that time, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And He found Philip and
said to him, “Follow Me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of
Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have
found Him of Whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote,
Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can
anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and
see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, “Behold, an
Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” Nathanael said to Jesus, “How do
you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when
you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered Him,
“Rabbi, Thou art the Son of God! Thou art the King of Israel!” Jesus
answered him, “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do
you believe? You shall see greater things than these.” And Jesus said to
him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the
angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”
SAINTS AND FEASTS OF THE DAY First Sunday of Great Lent (Sunday of Orthodoxy); Tarasios the
confessor, archbishop of Constantinople; Hieromartyr Reginos, bishop
of Skopelos; Hieromartyr Markellos, bishop of Apamea in Syria;
Martyr Alexander of Markianopolis
A GOOD WORD “Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow
from you do not turn away.” – Matthew 5:42
“He will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children
of the needy, he will crush the oppressor.” – Psalm 72:4
“Vigils and fasts and acts of mercy are methods advocated by the
saints to attain the spiritual life. But they must not stand alone, nor
must the Christian put his trust in them. Humility must have faith for
its principle, and fasting be combined with charity, that is, feed the
hungry, give water to the thirsty, clothe the naked.”
--St. Basil the Great
“Share what you have, lest you lose what you have. Spend what you
possess on the needs of others in order to keep what you possess.” –
St. John Chrysostom
“A holy soul cares for his neighbors, either close at hand or far
away. He cares where the homeless will spend the night, how the
hungry will be fed, with what the naked will be clothed. He cares
and he prays for the salvation of his neighbors: that their hearts may
be filled with love towards God, that their minds may be directed
towards God, that the wicked may turn from the paths of
wickedness, that the hesitant may be confirmed in the Faith, that the
firm may persevere, that the departed may behold the Face of God,
that the living may be written in the Book of Life in the Kingdom of
Light.” – St. Nikolai Velimirovich
“It is not right or proper for the rich to keep excess wealth when
there are many poor people in need of the means of existence, of
necessary clothing and proper dwellings, for we have nothing of our
own; everything belongs to God!” – St. John of Kronstadt
“If you give something to someone who is in need, then let a
cheerful face precede your gift, along with kind words and
encouragement for his suffering.” – St. Isaac the Syrian
“A tree is known by its fruit, a man by his deeds. A good deed is
never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love.” – St. Basil the Great

Great Fast, 2018
TO BE READ FROM THE PULPIT AND PRINTED IN THE BULLETIN If you cannot remember everything, instead of everything, I beg you, remember this without fail, that not to share our own wealth with the poor is theft from the poor and deprivation of their means of life; we do not possess our own wealth but theirs.
-Saint John Chrysostom Beloved in Christ,
Greetings and blessings to you in the Name of Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ!
As we look ahead to our journey into the Great Fast on Meatfare Sunday, our Holy Orthodox Church offers us a stark and fearful reminder of the coming of Our Lord in glory to judge all the tribes and nations of the earth. He teaches in the gospel reading that He will judge us according to whether we ministered to Him by our ministering to the needy, the sick, and the imprisoned. As we begin this time of fasting and increased attendance at divine services, we are thus reminded not to forget our calling to also increase our love and care for others – especially through almsgiving.
One of the truly beautiful ministries of our Archdiocese is the Food for Hungry Program. During these days of the Great Fast, we can sit together with our families and make the intentional decision to do with less that we may share with others. While we learn from experience that we can indeed live more simply, we should remember – as we are exhorted by Saint John in the quotation above – that the wealth we have is truly not ours but the possession of those without. I call on all of the faithful of our Archdiocese to offer bountiful support to this grace-bestowing, life-giving program.
As we begin our journey to the Life-giving and Saving Passion and Glorious Resurrection of Our Lord, let us offer to Him a pleasing fast that is not simply a time of abstaining from foods but a time of fervent love of God and neighbor, victory over our passions, reconciliation with our enemies, and generous outreach to the needy, infirm, and imprisoned.
Praying for all of you to be granted a holy, pure, and grace-filled fast, I remain,
Your Father in Christ,
