OUTREACH

Hope Exchange Needs You! It's that time of the year when our parish has been fully transformed into a vibrant learning community called Hope Exchange! Now that we, as a faith community, have raised the funds to make the program possible, it's time to roll up our sleeves and get busy with some of the on-campus work! Here's how you can help:

1) Parent/Caregiver Empowerment Dinners Need Crews! Every Thursday, we host empowerment dinners for the parents and families of the children of Hope Exchange. These dinners are an important part of the Hope Exchange's life as a community and are exciting ways for St. Ann's parishioners to get to know the children, parents, and staff of Hope Exchange. Right now, we are in need of team leaders, cooks, servers, and clean-up crews for our dinners. Team leaders coordinate the crew, plan and buy food for about 100 people, make sure the food is prepared by 6 p.m. the night of the dinner, usually help to serve the meal, and supervise the clean-up. The meal is over by 8:00 pm. *We also need a Dinner Volunteer Coordinator to oversee the overall effort for the Parent/Caregiver Empowerment Dinners. If you can help on any of these dates, or serve as the overall Dinner Volunteer Coordinator, please contact Khette Cox, Assistant Director of Hope Exchange, at 254-3534 or 210-6502. 2) Lunch Supervisors Come over to St. Ann's any day of the week, Monday through Friday, around 11:15 and help to set up for lunch. Stay and supervise the children as they eat, giving the staff a chance to have a quick lunch, and help with clean-up after lunch, which ends at 12:30 p.m. Lunch supervision can be done on a day-by-day basis, or you can volunteer for an entire week or specific day each week. Contact Hope Exchange Director Beth Preston at St. Ann's (254-3534) if you'd like to help with lunch. 3) Reading Buddies and Tutors Every day during the program, right after lunch at 12:30 p.m., we need volunteers to read with children for about 15-20 minutes. We try to pair all the children with someone, it may be another student, it may be the Director, it may be another volunteer – everyone reads during this time. Lunch volunteers may consider staying a little longer to read with a child during this time. Or volunteers can come in specifically for this activity. As the program unfolds, teachers find certain students who need adult help with reading, and at the beginning of the program, we are already aware of 2-3 children who will need adult help as they read. This could be a one-time engagement, a daily reading time, or weekly, depending on your availability and the child's progress. If you are interested in reading individually with a child during the morning or Reading Buddies time, contact Hope Exchange Director Beth Preston at St. Ann's to volunteer. 4) Afternoon Activities Supervision Every afternoon, the children enjoy activities ranging from dance to kickball, foreign language lessons to needlepoint, singing to sign-making. The staff usually leads these activities, but they often need help with setting up, supervising children, and cleaning up. If you are available any afternoon from about 12:30 to 3:00, we would appreciate your help! Contact Khette Cox to volunteer 254-3534 or at 210-6502. 5) Friday Field Trips Most Fridays, the Hope Exchange goes on field trips to exciting places like the Adventure Science Museum and the Fisk University Van Vechten Gallery. If you have time on a Friday, come along with us! Contact Khette Cox to volunteer.

6) Volunteer Coordinator In addition to a Dinner Volunteer Coordinator, we would love to have a Volunteer Coordinator for our reading tutors, lunch time volunteers, afternoon activity and field trip volunteers and our post lunch Reading Buddies 7) Snacks The children love good snacks! Please drop off your snack donations, labeled with HOPE EXCHANGE, on the shelves near the black refrigerator at the back of the kitchen. We love to give the kids Goldfish crackers, animal crackers, pretzels, granola or cereal bars, ice pops, cookies, popcorn, graham crackers, Kool-aid and lemonade (powder form), juice boxes, and the like. We would also welcome napkins and small plates and cups. 8) Finale! Please join us for the Finale, a performance held on the last night of the program, Thursday, July 16! The program itself usually begins around 7:00 p.m. and features the many skits, dances, songs, and dramatic readings that the children have been working on all summer! Come feel the excitement as these happy children share what they have learned with their families and the wider St. Ann's community! Thank you for your continuing support of Hope Exchange! This ministry of St. Ann's parish would not exist at all if not for your generosity, prayers, and participation. In Hope, Beth Preston Khette Cox Director Assistant Director

YOUTH AND CHILDREN MINISTRIES

Youth Member becomes Eagle Scout Addison DeMoss, a long-time member of St. Ann’s Youth Group, received the Eagle Scout Award at Boy Scout Troop 121’s Mother's Day Court of Honor on May 11. Addison was introduced by St. Ann’s

Youth Leader Vicki Brown and in his remarks talked about how important the St. Ann’s Youth Group had been to him. DeMoss, a senior at Nashville School of the Arts, organized a project to improve his school. With the help of fellow scouts, friends and volunteers from Nashville Tools for Schools, he organized the painting of dressing rooms and building of bookshelves for the teacher's lounge. Shown, from left: Deana Grimes, Addison’s grandmother, Addison, and Scoutmaster John Bryant.

Youth Group Updates

The youth group is getting ready for the summer mission trip and already gearing up for fall with plans for a fall retreat at Standing Stone State Park. With Vicki Brown’s retirement, Kristin Wells and Kristin Higdon will be leading the youth group with help from Priscilla Craig, Kristin Deitrick, and Lyn Bingham. Youth fundraisers for the mission trip included Silent Sunday. So far, we have collected more than $1,100 of about $1,500 in pledges. If you haven’t paid your pledge, you can write a check and mark it Silent Sunday-Youth Fund, or give it to the youth you pledged to. A Parent’s Night Out was held April 25. Aimee Bennett from the Jason Foundation recently spoke to the youth about teen suicide. It was quite an informative meeting. We are planning summer activities again, including volun-teering at Hope Exchange and having a once-a-month outing.

Child Care Volunteers A great big THANK YOU to all those parishioners who volunteered to help out with childcare during the 8:30 and 10:30 services this school year. The children and parents of St. Ann’s greatly appreciate your willingness to help out with this very important ministry. The summer schedule is going to be much lighter. If you are interested in helping out with childcare during the services, please contact Jennifer Painter at 424-8646 or [email protected].
