This event has become an important way of celebrating the home/ school relationship. I am indebted to Mr Francis and the staff for their willingness to organise the breakfast and activities. I also appreciate the efforts that our P&C have gone to for once again coordinating the Father’s Day stall which provided gifts for students to purchase. I trust all dads had a great day last Sunday! NAPLAN Results The National Assessment in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results for students in Years 3 and 5 will be sent home next Monday 13 th September. Parents and carers of students who sat the tests in Reading, Writing and Numeracy in May of this year will receive a set of comprehensive reports that provide an excellent guide to the level of achievement of each student. For Year 5 students the results also provide the level of growth achieved in each curriculum area measured from their Year 3 results. Should parents/carers have any questions about the NAPLAN results I encourage them to contact their child’s class teacher. Sport for Schools . Help us to get sports gear for our school with Coles and Bi-Lo receipts. Bring in your Coles Supermarket, Coles Online, Bi-Lo and Pick’n Pay receipts and place them in the specially marked box in the office from 2 September - 31 October. Concert Tickets At the time of writing there were still tickets available for our school concert on the evenings of Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd September. (Tickets for Wednesday’s performance are very limited). With the theme “Our Australia,” it promises to be two nights of great entertainment. I urge anyone who is contemplating purchasing tickets to do so very soon to avoid disap-pointment. Choir Due to an unexpected family matter I was unable to attend our choir’s performance at the Sydney Opera House. Miss Wiseman tells me it was a memorable experience and I congratulate all involved. I know they are looking forward to watching the stage musical, “WICKED” this Wednesday especially after singing several of the songs for their Opera House performance. There is even a Chertsey link with Heath Pounder’s cousin playing a lead role in “WICKED.” Thank You During my absence I was appreciative of the school’s Assistant Principals, Mr Francis, Mrs Auinger and Mrs Vaughan filling the Principal’s role.

Well done to Emersyn of 3/4S for winning our recent Hat Draw. I am sure Emersyn will enjoy the prize of a Slushie from our school canteen. My thanks to Mrs Dyer and the school’s P&C for supporting this initiative.

STORYBIRD

As mentioned last week classes celebrated National Literacy and Numeracy Week through collaborative story-telling/ story-writing. Each class created a “storybird”, which is a visual online story. Each class has created a storybird that is particularly unique. Chertsey’s students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed participating in this storybird project and we are looking forward continually using this online literature resource. Please access Chertsey students’ storybirds via these attached links: Penny Tillers The Birthday Party http://storybird.com/books/the-birthday-party-14/

HOLIDAY READING IS RAD

Holiday Reading is Rad has proven to be a highly successful strategy for maintaining reading skills of students from Kindergarten to Year 6 in Priority Schools over the long holiday break. In 2009-2010, more than 25,000 students participated. Of these students, 96 % either maintained or improved their reading levels over the summer holidays. The aim of the Holiday Reading is Rad program is to encourage adults to read with children each day of the holidays to prevent summer fall-off in reading skills. Each participating student will receive a reading kit which includes:

reading bag (NEW)

magazines

student diary
