Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

Today is Pentecost Sunday and it is the last day of the

Easter Season. Pentecost celebrates the great outpouring of

the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and upon the church.

The word Pentecost, meaning 50, derives its name from the

feast of weeks, a Jewish festival of the early harvest

celebrated 50 days after Passover. Early Christians

reinterpreted the Jewish festival as a commemoration of the

coming of the Holy Spirit. On Pentecost Sunday, as we

celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we call to mind

the gifts of the spirit that we have received. The use of our

gifts releases the power of the Spirit. Pray today, that the

spirit may guide us in using our gifts well for the service of

others.

I would also like to thank most sincerely the many people

who were involved in our Ascension celebration on May

25th. Thanks to all those who worked on the beautiful

liturgy, particularly our wonderful parish musicians, our

choir from the 11a.m. Mass, our Walkirios, and our Jazz

musicians, our altar servers, our lectors and those who

decorated the church. I would like to thank as well those

who were involved in the party in the school gym after the

Mass, all the wonderful work coordinated by Esperanza,

and so many others including wonderful food, wonderful

entertainment, and most importantly, a very spirited

gathering of Ascension parishioners. The music and food

is very representative of the diversity that makes up

Ascension. Thank you all!

And finally, next weekend, a representative from our

Finance Committee will speak briefly at each of the

masses. They wish to get back on track of giving a

financial update a few times a year. I’m sure that during

next week’s presentation, they will again invite

parishioners to consider online giving. Online giving is

particularly important during the summer months. During

the summer months, many parishioners go away and our

collections go down significantly but our bills do not go

down, if anything, they go up because of the air

conditioning in the church. Might I be premature in

anticipating their request, and ask you now to consider

online giving? Thank you again for all you do for

Ascension.

Peace,

Fr. Kearney

¡Gracias a

feligreses salen fuera y nuestras colectas bajan

Paz,

Padre Kearney

Do you play a musical instrument?

Did you once play an instrument that might need a little dusting off? Calling all violinists, flutists, clarinetists, and any other instrumentalists

in the parish! Our organist-choirmaster is taking inventory of all Ascension musicians as well as lining up special music for the summer and fall Masses. We welcome your talents and participation! Shelter Update

Imagine linguini with clam sauce, meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy, chicken parmesan, chicken in mushroom sauce, roasted vegetables and fresh salads. Picture selections of brownies, festive cookies, muffins and apple

pie; bagels, French toast, sausages and steaming coffee. This

could be the menu from your favorite restaurant, instead these are the delicious foods the shelter volunteers prepared in March for the 78 guests who stayed at the shelter. We are particularly grateful to a family that made a cash donation to fund the teens in the Spirit Squad so they could cook a meal for the guests.

In April we responded to the need of our cooperating agencies and opened the shelter on Sunday nights in addition to the usual Saturday nights. Across 7 nights in April we provided 102 hot meals and safe beds. The shelter will be open through the end of June. There is still time for you to support this ministry. New volunteers and donors are always welcome. Would your family, office, class, troop, or group like to assemble and donate gift bags for our homeless guests? Contact Kelley at [email protected] for more information on how to donate. If you would like more information about the ministry email: [email protected] . Volunteers are needed to cook, for setup/cleanup, and as overnight hosts. For volunteer sign ups go to: http://bit.ly/shelter-signup.
