STUDIO 23 ASBESTOS INVESTIGATION

As requested., in association wir.h yourself, I conducted an investigation of the ceiling space of . Studio 23 on 28 March 1996.

An industrial horoscope - lent by Mr. Ed Robertson of Healrby Buiklings International - was used to view the ceiling space on the west side of the Studio, through an existing hole in the false ceiling.

Because no asbestos was obse.rved, a light fitting in the centre of the false ceiling was able to be removed with complete safety to enable a more comprehensive examination of the soffit.

The diagram below shows a cross section of the ceiling space:-

Three samples were ta.ken of insulation materials in the ceiling space, :ind all were found ro be asbestos-free. See NATA endorsed Certificate of Analysis Reference 17678/80, dared 2 April 1996.

Hence, no asbestos-containing materials were found or suspected in the ceiling space of Studio 23.

The existing "asbeslos - caution" labels - that were placed on the W1derside of the false ceiling as a precautionary measure - should now be removed..

COMMENTS ON AIRBORNE ASBESTOS FIBRE TESTS

Attached please find NATA endorsed Certificates of Analysis References 24004/06, 24013/15 and 24016/17, which show the results of airborne asbestos fibre measurements conducted on 16, 17 and 18 February 2000 on the ABC TV site at Gore Hill.

Whilst the samples were being taken, asbestos-cement materials were being removed from the the perimeter of the GIO Building.

All but two of the test results were satisfactory at less than the detection limit of <0.01 fibres/ml.

The two exceptions were samples conducted inside the new Sound Stage Building adjacent to the south edge of the GIO building. Both of these samples had to be rejected because of -the intense construction work in the building. · However, both samples contained no detectable fibrous material, and were thus completely satisfactory in indicating that the asbestos-cement removal activities adjacent to the building had no effect on the new Sound Stage building.

Hence, all results were in fact satisfactory. )

Attached please find NA TA endorsed Certificate of Analysis Reference 24042/46-id, dated 3 March 2000, which shows that the fibre-cement boards around the air-conditioning duct from the north and south plant rooms associated with the GIO building are asbestos-free, even though several of the boards had the appearance of asbestos-cement.

Consequently, this material can remain in situ.

Our Reference, ABC-000322-GIO Stage I clearance

GIO BUILDING - STAGE I INSPECTION

As requested, I visited the GIO Building on-20 March and inspected Stage I in conjunction with Mr. SteiJhen 8rc:y (Stzamit).

Stage I included the 6 bays immediately adjacent to and to the west of the two story office section at the extreme west of the building.

The floor (soil at the east and concrete at the west) and the structural steel members were inspected prior to the removal of the purlins.

Apart from some small remnants of asbestos-cement pieces found in the soil at the south end, I certify that Stage I is free of visible asbestos-containing material.

It should be noted that an airborne asbestos fibre sample (see NATA endorsed Certificate .of Analysis Reference 24201/02, dated 15 March 2000) taken within 5 metres of asbestos-cement roof removal activities in Stage I showed a most satisfactory result less than the detection limit of the method of <0.01 fibres per millilitre of air.

Stage II still contains asbestos-cement roofing which will be subject to later removal and a separate inspection.
