What we do

James Fisher NDT (JF NDT) is based in Deeside, with supporting bases right across the country, offering a fully comprehensive range of NDTinspection techniques.

JF NDT works across a wide base of industry sectors specialising

on products that demand the very highest in quality standards.

This requires that JF NDT achieve and maintain compliance with

stringent industry and client Quality Accreditations including

UKAS and Nadcap for personnel, techniques, procedures,

equipment and facilities.

Service

JF NDT operates 4 UKAS and Nadcap approvedtesting laboratories. The component testing division ispredominately involved with the quality control of 'asmanufactured' parts including castings, forgings andwelds for the aerospace, medical, automotive andpower generation markets. In these safety and liabilityconscious markets, our primary focus is on efficientdelivery of inspection services to the requisite qualityand traceability standards. The division is resourcedwith more than 30 PCN/NAS 410 qualified staff, adedicated centralized technical administration andquality management team, 20 fully equipped X-raybays supported by radiograph viewing rooms and isable to deliver both conventional and digitalradiography as required by our clients.

The radiographic services outlined above aresupplemented by a range of other methods whichinclude high resolution ultrasonic imaging techniques(particularly suited to the inspection of compositematerials and the micro-structural assessment ofcastings and forgings), and various surface and nearsurface testing methods including dye penetrant, eddy current and remote visual inspection.

Advantages

n JF NDT work closely with customer’s requirementsto ensure that inspections are carried out using theprescribed code, standard or test procedure inorder to generate the best possible results in termsof probability of detection, quality of information andaccuracy of assessment.

n Radiography is a versatile tool for the inspection ofa wide variety of items.

n JF NDT offers both film and digital radiography.

In house testing

Service

JF NDT offers radiographic inspection on customerpremises, either in a safely shielded location, usingbarriers and collimators, for fixed items that cannot beremoved from site, or readily removable articles can betransported to one of our facilities for inspection.

JF NDT has extensive knowledge and experience of the detailed job planning, control measures, riskassessments and site administrative arrangementsnecessary to ensure that site radiographic inspectionscan be carried out in a safe manner. The HSE requiresseven days of notification prior to work commencement.

Advantages

n Radiography is an excellent technique for theinspection of welds for quality control before putting the plant into service, and also for condition assessments in service.

n Other applications include inspections throughinsulating materials, pumps, valves, pipework, tanks, vessels, condensers etc.

n Using 'profile' radiography it is possible to perform'double wall/single image' assessment of throughwall condition to establish the presence and extentof metal loss through corrosion or internal liningbreakdown and fouling.

n Gamma radiography is performed with Iridiumsources or using the low emission Saferad systemwhich provides high sensitivity at reduced risk andis more 'site friendly' in terms of permits and workarea restrictions.

Film radiography

Service

JF NDT have a wide variety of standard andcustomized X-Ray systems ranging from 160kV to 320 kV to suit the requirements of various industriesincluding aerospace, automotive, medical munitions, oil and gas, , food and nuclear. JF NDT haveestablished processing facilities at all sites, and can also set up temporary processing facilities on acustomer site if required by the volume of work.

Advantages

n Pipe and tube weld inspections, e.g. oil, gas andindustrial plant.

n High energy systems for the inspection of thicksections of dense materials.

n Developed for efficient application to ensureoptimal detection & defect interpretation

Service

The radiographic industry as a whole is moving towarddigital technologies, and JF NDT is leading the way inEurope. Accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 andApproved by Nadcap and Rolls Royce PLC, JFNDT’steam of highly experienced radiographers aresupported by the latest in high tech equipment, including a fully automated Hamamatsu 150kV microfocus X-ray set with a 200µm Digital Detector Array(DDA)and a Computed Radiography (CR) systemcapable of 25 µm resolution.

Advantages

n Digital radiography is very effective in its ability todetect flaws such as gas pores, inclusions andshrinkage very quickly.

n Images can be captured in a fraction of the timerequired for conventional Radiography, and oncecaptured the images can be viewed immediately on a high resolution monitor or sent directly to acustomer for disposition.

n Robotically controlled programs used in the digitalprocess allows for fast repeatable inspectionsevery time.

n The impact on the environment is also reduced incomparison to conventional radiography as the useof film and chemicals is eliminated.

n And the reduction to the cost and volume of storage archives required for film can be reducedsignificantly by the electronic data storage of thedigital images.
