Planned Changes:The company has experienced rapid growth in the past years, and continued growth is anticipated. It is critical to b i th t th id li bl i t t d i 24 h d d k T tbusiness that the company provides reliable, uninterrupted service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To meet these demands, the company decided to migrate the current IT Infrastructure from legacy Novell environment to Microsoft Windows Server 2008 platform.

Problem Statement, for existing IT Systems Infrastructure

1) Directory Services:MIS  Directory Services Infrastructure was  running on Novell NetWare eDirectory Services 6.5.x version, which was not fulfilling the easy of management and its compliance with Microsoft Servers and Client Workstations for Permission Assignment on File Server and the over all concept of Centralized Management.

2) Email Services:MIS Email Services was running on Bynari Insight Server, which was a Suse Linux based Application, and was providing POP3 and IMP4 based Services to end users, the main problem, which MIS IT Management was facing for their old

il i i t id th 24 7 365 ti f E il S i d l ith thi bl th iti l blemail service is to provide the 24x7x365 up‐time for Email Services, and along with this problem, the critical problem, which was causing everyone, who was having email access, is to access the accurate and updated ADDRESS BOOK (CONTACTS).

In addition, to above described problems with old Email Server, the another big issue, which was affecting all BlackBerry Users, berceuse previously MIS was using Etisalat Internet Based BlackBerry Service for their all Blackberry  Users, and it was difficult to centrally manage the all BlackBerry handheld devices.

3) File Server and Network Map Drives :MIS was having multiple File Servers for serving their huge amount of Engineering, Drafting and other departmental documents sharing needs, MIS was having one NOVELL FILE SERVER, one WINDOWS 2000 SERVER based file server and one Windows Server 2003 based File Server.

It was quite difficult for MIS IT Management to assign the PERMISSION based on per users for up to 3.0 TB of data onIt was quite difficult for MIS IT Management to assign the PERMISSION based on per users for up to 3.0 TB of data on different file server, and there were no aid provided to FILE SERVER for preventing the singe point of failure, along with this, it had also became quite difficult for managing the manual mapping of Network Drives for File Server.

Problem Statement:

4) Remote Management for End Users Workstation for deploying Software's and Windows Updates:To manage more than 800+ users workstations on multiple geographically dispersed locations,  it was truly a difficult job for MIS IT Management, along with the management these workstation, it was also very hard to remotely deploy any software or update to any existing in‐use application.

5) SPAM Filtering:Although, MIS had a Barracuda Anti‐Spam Appliance installed on their Parameter Network, but Barracuda was not fulfilling the requirements to quarantine SPAMS and Viruses, which were submitting from the local users on the email server.

5) Backing up Email Server, File Server and Directory Services:MIS IT Management was using normal COPY method for keeping the Data backup, and sometimes this copy process could not copy those files and folders which are in usedcould not copy those files and folders, which are in used.

In addition, to the open‐file copy issue, there was no utility available, which can copy the Directory Server and Mail Server Backup.

6) Core Infrastructure Services, such as DNS, DHCP and WINS at problems:Core Infrastructure services, such as DNS, DHCP and WINS were also very hard to centrally managed, and along with the centralized management of these services, it was also immense avoid the single point of failure, since there were no method for service these services as a cluster or being served under same umbrella.

Implementing Name Resolution (DNS, WINS) and DHCP Infrastructure

Achieved Business Goals and Requirements

Building a sound Core Systems Network Infrastructure for Name Resolution, such a Domain Naming Service (DNS) NetBIOS Naming Service (WINS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Services (DHCP)

Requirement:

Achieved Business Goals and Requirements

Migrating Novell NetWare File Server and Windows 2000 File Server to Windows Server 2008 R2 Failover Cluster Services

Requirement:

Cluster Services.

To migrate the up to 4.0 Terabyte (TB) of data from both Novell NetWare File Server and Windows 2000 File Server to Windows Server 2008 R2 Failover Cluster was one of the quite difficult task for ITQAN

Achieved Milestone:

File Server to Windows Server 2008 R2 Failover Cluster, was one of the quite difficult task for ITQAN Project Team, and the another difficult part was to gather the current assigned Security Permission (NTFS / SHARING) from the Novell and Windows 2000 File Server, because MIS was using PER USER BASE ACL entries for both File Servers.

And as a workaround for this difficult task, ITQAN Project Team worked closely with MIS Team to gather the assigned Security Permission, along with the coping of Data from old File Servers to the new File Servers, which was 100% automated by using ROBOCOPY, and as a last phase, after coping of data, ITQAN assigned the permission and then on next day switch over the FILE SERVER, which was a fabulous milestone of this projectmilestone of this project

Benefits achieved with Implementation of  Highly Available File Server:With the implementation of Windows 2008 R2 Highly Available File Server, it eliminates Single Point

of Failure for Data Access, and also provides single platform for all departments and users to store data.

Implementing Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manager 2007

Achieved Business Goals and Requirements

Ability to manage workstations and installing applications on all 800+ workstations on each geographically dispersed locations

Requirement:

geographically dispersed locations.

As we know that MIS Network is geographically dispersed in different emirates of UAE, and to keep track

Achieved Milestone:

of all installed software and hardware in the IT Infrastructure is quite difficult, and along with this to manage the workstations on these different locations for day to day administration and Software deployment was a very difficult task for IT Team in MIS.

Benefits achieved with Implementation of SCCM 2007:Benefits achieved with Implementation of  SCCM 2007:

With the Implementation of SCCM 2007, MIS is now able to take inventory of all the software and hardware, which are in used in their IT Infrastructure, and they can easily remotely manage the day to day Workstation and Server Management using SCCM.

I would also like to mention here that SCCM 2007 was quite helpful for us to remove the Novell Client from all 800+ workstation, and it was truly a great discovery.
