Mon General recognized as Blue Distinction Center

Mon General Hospital has been recognized as a Blue Distinc-tion Center© for both Maternity Care and Knee and Hip Replace-ment by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia, as part of Highmark’s Blue Distinction Specialty Care Program.

The Blue Distinction Spe-cialty Care Program recognizes healthcare facilities that dem-onstrate expertise in delivering quality specialty care – safely, effectively and cost efficiently. The goal of the program is to help consumers find both qual-ity and value for their specialty care needs, while encourag-ing healthcare professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of healthcare nation-wide.

To receive the Blue Distinc-tion Center for Maternity Care designation, Mon General Hospi-

tal demonstrated expertise and a commitment to quality care during both vaginal and cesarean section delivery.

President’s message“Experience”

is a word that was first used in the 14th Century and was defined as knowledge gained by

repeated trials.Experience is also something

that is very prevalent at Mon Health System. Every year when we present our Service Awards, I’m always impressed by the number of long-term “experienced” employees we have working here.

At our recent Service Awards Reception, we honored seven employees with 40 years of service, 19 employees with 35 years, 17 with 30 years and 23 with 25 years. In today’s business

climate, that is almost unheard of. It also says a lot about our organization.

Today, the average person changes jobs 10-15 times during his or her career according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2012, the average job tenure in the United States was just 4.6 years.

Many of our long-term employees are known by the people we serve in the community. They are their neighbors and their friends. People have come to trust them and their experience, and, as a result, Mon Health System. This longevity also benefits our newer employees, who are often mentored by our experienced staff.

When our 40 year employees began their jobs in 1976, Mon

Health System was a much different place. The “new” Mon General Hospital was just getting ready to open at our current location. In fact, the “Mon Health System’ name would not even exist until the early 1980s, after Mon EMS joined the organization.

Since then, both Mon General Hospital and Mon Health System have grown substantially. Our long-term employees have seen a lot of change during their careers. But there is one thing that has not changed.

When patients and their families come to Mon Health System, whether it be to Mon General Hospital, visiting one of our primary care physicians, being transported in a Mon EMS ambulance, picking up

healthcare equipment at Mon HealthCare or living at The Village at Heritage Point, the basics of how we care for people remain the same.

Our patients are looking for a safe environment, free of mistakes, with staff who deliver consistently high quality care in a warm and friendly environment, day in and day out. Each of you works diligently every day to provide that perfect care.

As we celebrate National Nurses Week, National Hospital Week and National EMS Week this month, thank you to each of you for your dedication and the compassionate care you provide to our patients.

Dedication ceremony

A dedication service was held at Mon General Hospital’s Tree of Life on Wednesday, April 20, in memory of John Westbrook of Facilities Management who passed away earlier this year. A “Capped Acorn” was added to the tree in his memory.

Welcome Addy, the newest member of Mon General Hospital’s volunteer team! Addy, a 2-year-old Golden Retriever, is a registered therapy dog. She joined Mon General’s volunteer roster Friday, April 29. Addy’s owner, Ellison Ponzurick, said signing Addy up to volunteer was on her bucket list. Ponzurick is the Director of Oncology at the Zelda Stein Weiss Cancer Center. “I’m very excited to be able to do this,” Ponzurick said. “It’s amazing to see her interaction with patients.”

Mon General Hospital physi-cians now have direct access to digital medical images on their mo-bile devices, thanks to an upgrade in the hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).

The advanced communication capability between radiologists and physicians brings faster treat-ment to patients. This is achieved by reducing the turn-around time between capturing the image and receiving the doctor’s diagnosis or treatment instructions.

“No matter where a doctor hap-pens to be at any given time, her or she can access images from a mobile devices such as an electronic tablet

or a smart phone,” explained Mike DeMaske, Mon General’s Imaging Systems Administrator. “The doc-tor can then quickly respond with a diagnosis or treatment plan.”

The $150,000 PACS upgrade includes talk-to-text software, al-lowing radiologists to dictate their reports which are available for doc-tors to read on their mobile devices along with the medical images.

Patients can be assured that their medical information is pro-tected with advanced encryption capabilities. Encryption is inherent is the system itself, negating the need for doctors to use an app or proprietary electronic devices.

New PACS technology enhances communication

Mon Health System honored 231 employees and 20 retirees, represent-ing 4,173 years of service, at its 41st Annual Service Awards Reception.

“This event is about each of you and the tireless contributions you have made to the Health System,” Mon Health System President and CEO Darryl Duncan told those attending the event at the Morgantown Event Center on Thursday, April 21.

“Whether your role is at Mon General Hospital, Mon EMS, Mon HealthCare or The Village at Heritage Point, all are equally important to our mission,” Duncan said. “On behalf of the Board, leadership, medical staff, community and most of all the patients we are so blessed to serve, I want to say thank you for all that you do, the care and support you pro-vide, and the comfort and passion that you share each and every day.”

During the reception, awards were presented to Mon Health System employees marking their 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10 and 5 year service anniversaries, along with those who retired in the past year.

Linda Smith, who retired as an Emergency Department nurse in 2015 after 36 years of service, started the evening with a champagne toast, thanking those being honored for the excellent care, compassion and respect they provide.

Also offering congratulations to the employees were Mon Health System Board of Directors Chairman Mike DeProspero, Mon General Hospital Board of Directors Chairman Pat Esposito and Chief of the Medical Staff Matthew Darmelio, MD.

“We want to express appreciation for the part you play making the hospital and system what it is today,” Esposito, said. “We know that our growth and success is dependent on having devoted and capable team members like you.”

Mon General’s Lymphedema Support Group presented a Lymphedema D-Day Award from the National Lymphedema Network to member Traci Spohn of Morgantown at its March 2 meeting. The award recognized Spohn for her “passion and dedication toward lymphedema awareness.” Pictured from left to right are Abby Peddicord OTR/L, CLT; Erin Double OTR/L, CLT; Spohn and Lori Carpenter RN, CWS.

By supporting those who pro-vide care, the Quality Department impacts every person who walks through a Mon Health System door.

“Our mission is to support caregivers and to assist them in providing quality care, help-ing everyone in the organization achieve clinical excellence,” said Camille Western, Director of Quality. “The Quality Department is about improving processes and getting better outcomes.”

A Quality Department represen-tative visits every unit in the hospital and every physician practice and talks to the front-line caregivers. The Quality Department includes: outcomes analysts, decision support analysts, infection control and envi-ronmental and patient safety.

“We ask them, ‘What could go wrong?’ and try to pinpoint potential problems before they happen,” Western said.

Anyone within the health sys-tem can contact the Quality De-partment at any time to report a potential concern. Someone from quality will promptly respond, ob-serve the process and speak with parties involved.

The Quality Department’s outcome analysts monitor patient data and identify areas for im-provement.

They do this by gathering data from the electronic health records and compiling that data. Outcome analysts often have a background in nursing.

They were on the front lines in 2015 as the hospital adminis-

tration and staff prepared for the Joint Commission triennial visit. Quality Department employees ensure that the health system policies are up to date and stan-dards are met for both the Joint Commission and Centers for Med-icaid and Medicare Services.

“We can identify a trend, so we can improve patient care across the board,” said Patrick Smith, Outcomes Analyst. “It’s an extension of the bedside nurse.”

Outcomes Analyst Diana Padovini said she feels the out-comes analyst positions don’t just impact one patient; they impact all of the health system’s patients.

Outcome analysts submit their data to Decision Support Analysts Clarence Swiger and Sam Cilento. Swiger and Cilento look at the data to determine how the Health System can improve their processes and quality of care.

Both Swiger and Cilento are engineers and say they take an “engineering approach” to their roles with the Health System.

“We can help quantify some-thing that the medical staff may know intuitively,” Cilento said.

For Highmark Quality Blue, a hospital pay-for-value program, Swiger and Cilento help Mon Health System’s caregivers meet the program’s goals, which may result in up to a 3 percent in-crease in reimbursement rates.

For the hospital, this is a monetary gain of $1.8 million annually. The program looks at Mon General’s readmission rates,

hospital-acquired infections and other areas to determine whether or not the hospital qualifies.

The Quality Department also monitors infectious diseases and patient and environmental safety.

Infection Preventionist Charleen Kaczmarek identifies emerging infec-tious diseases, like the Zika Virus or Ebola, and creates guidelines for the staff. She monitors for hospital-acquired infections and works with the team to develop best practices to reduce the number of infections.

“As the number of drug-resistant organisms increase, it’s important to focus on reducing the number hospi-tal-acquired infections,” Kaczmarek said. “We promote hand hygiene and follow isolation precautions to reduce the spread of infection.”

Kaczmarek is currently co-ordinating a hand-hygiene cam-paign called, “It’s OK to Ask.” The campaign encourages patients and visitors to ask caregivers to wash their hands before and after providing care.

Environmental Safety Coordina-tor Maxine Cantis and Patient Safety Coordinator Jamie Smitley identify po-tential safety issues for patients, visitors and employees.

Cantis also plans safety train-ing exercises including fire and

disaster drills and addresses safety concerns, like reducing the number sharps incidents.

The newest face in the Qual-ity office is Jamie Smitley, Patient Safety Coordinator. Smitley’s role includes analyzing patient safety data to recommend and imple-ment proactive solutions.

The team of Kaczmarek, Can-tis, and Smitley routinely round to identify risks related to infection prevention, environmental and pa-tient safety. This proactive rounding team visits health system depart-ments during all shifts. Identified risks are tracked and follow up is shared with department leaders.

“Quality improvement isn’t performed in just our depart-ment; it’s performed across the health system,” Western said. “It is our role to coach and encour-age quality across the organiza-tion.”

Hospital volunteers honored at annual luncheonMon General Hospital thanked

its 252 volunteers for the many steps they take to provide great service at its annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, held on Tuesday, April 12, during National Volunteer Week.

During the past year, the vol-unteers contributed 27,282 hours of service to the hospital. That’s a lot of steps and was the reason “shoes” was the theme for the recognition.

“Each of us put our shoes on one foot at a time,” Mon General Director of Volunteer Services Christina Brown told the volun-teers during the luncheon. “Each of you has embraced our patients knowing at any time you may be walking in their shoes.

“I’ve watched each of you celebrate with a patient or guest’s good news. I’ve watched each of you cry for a patient, pray for a patient, laugh with a patient, exchange recipes with patients

and guests, and even teach guests how to knit,” Brown said.

“Today we celebrate not only the hours each of you serve, but your gift to walk in someone else’s shoes for a minute, an hour and even days at a time. Thank you for being part of our Mon General team. We could not do it without you,” she said.

During the luncheon, Mon Health System President and CEO Darryl Duncan recognized the Top 10 volunteers for hours worked from April 1, 2015 through March 31, 2016.

The top 10 volunteers were Virginia Jarrett, 1,009.30 hours; Stan Dlugos, 539.65 hours; Barbara Sarris, 506.07 hours, Katherine Forman, 478.17 hours; Jacqueline Terlesky, 428.55 hours; Pamela Thompson, 416.72 hours; Kristan Rushford, 405.40 hours; Barbara Kent, 390.55 hours; Vickie Dinardi, 385.50 hours; and Jane Stewart, 384.55 hours.

Duncan also recognized volun-

teers celebrating 5, 10, 15 and 20 year service milestones.

Those recognized were 5 Years: Dana Boyce and Peppi the therapy dog, D.L. Collins, Cathy Elliott, Bruce Felton, Lisa Kukura, Shelly Purkey, George Sarris and

Angela Sengewait; 10 Years: Mary Ann Griffith, Shirley Hebb and Jane Stewart; 15 Years: Patty Allen and Sandy Deprospero; and 20 Years: MaDonna Basile, Mari-lyn Brewer, Louise Duda, Virginia Jarrett and Toni Southern.

Tony Clevenger, RN, was honed as Mon General Hospital’s April Cardinal Nursing Award recipient. Clevenger has been with Mon General for 12 years and worked in both the ICU and Surgical Services before becoming a full time House Supervisor. He goes above and beyond in trying to promote the standards of Mon General, volunteers to work in other units when busy, and is attentive to the needs of the patients, families and staff. The Cardinal Award is presented each month to a nurse who exemplifies the hospital’s service standards. Any staff member, patient or visitor may nominate a nurse for the award by visiting MonGeneral.com or MonNet.
